Francis Michael Archbold
Enderlin, ND
Francis Michael Archbold was born December 22, 1944 and spent his childhood on a farm outside of Enderlin, ND with parents Francis (Fritz) and Eileen, and five siblings Dennis, Terry, Tom, Colleen and Kathy. He attended Enderlin High School, earned his BS at University of North Dakota in 1967, and earned his MS in Counseling at University of Wisconsin, Superior in 1979.
His work as a High School Teacher and Guidance Counselor first brought him to an Indian Reservation near Duluth, then on to Yemen, El Salvador, Egypt, Thailand, Pakistan, and Ethiopia. When he met his wife June in Cairo, she knew him by his nickname “Third-world-Mike” (it soon became apparent why that was). Their daughters Katie and Maggie were born in Cairo and Bangkok respectively.
Mike will be best remembered by his friends and family as an adventurer, world traveler, and storyteller; forever curious about history and world events, and forever on the move. He could casually captivate a room with memories of being held at gun point by Salvadorian rebels, of that time he hitchhiked on the back of a banana truck through war-torn central Africa, of the many bribes he paid in order to climb to the top of the pyramids in Cairo, of that night he spent sleeping in a puddle on the streets of Mexico. And though Mike’s penchant for recklessness slowed down as he became a “responsible” husband and father, he certainly never settled for the norm. Mike lived life to the utmost, and if you were lucky enough to be living with him, you were along for an incredible ride.
His students and colleagues know him as a devoted counselor and mentor. He dedicated countless hours helping students to navigate the college admissions process, as well as organizing and chaperoning student trips through historical sites and natural reserves.
After 35 years overseas, Mike and family returned to Minnesota in 2007, and this past year he finally retired to his home in Enderlin, ND. Mike succumbed to cancer at home supported by his wife and daughters on June 16, 2012. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and former students and colleagues.
A “Celebration of Mike’s Life” will be held on Friday, June 22 at 4:00 PM at the Trinity Church in Enderlin.
