Charlene Absey
Charlene Absey, 73, 1121 Rhinehart Drive, East Grand Forks, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at home.
Charlene Clarice Haavig was born Sept. 10, 1925, the son of Edwin and Lena (Lohmeir) Haavig, in Fergus Falls, Minn. In 1931, they moved to Hunter, N.D., and in 1936 to Grand Forks, where she graduated from high school in 1942. She moved to Minneapolis, where she worked and attended a business school. She married James Roger Absey on Nov. 14, 1953, in East Grand Forks. She was a full-time homemaker. James Absey died Nov. 30, 1997.
She is survived by sons, James "Gus" (Nancy), Bakersfield, Calif., Roger (Rebecca), Grand Forks, Peter "Casey" (Patty), Moorhead, and Jon E. (Shana), Salt Lake City; daughters, Lori Absey, Pembina, N.D., and Lisa (Kevin) Beste, East Grand Forks; a stepdaughter, Rose (Ervin) Larson, Fargo; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Polly Haavig, Grand Forks.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks (Norman, East Grand Forks).
Idella McCormick
BREMEN, N.D. -- Idella McCormick, 90, Bremen, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, in Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford, N.D.
Idella Fredrickson was born April 1, 1908, the daughter of Austin and Annie (Holen) Fredrickson, in Lignite, N.D., where she attended school. She attended Dakota Business School in Fargo. She worked for Blaisdel Motors in Minot and Continental Baking Co., in Minneapolis. She moved to California and worked for Marston's Retail in San Diego. She married Olaf Bollingberg in December 1932 in Lignite. They farmed in Bremen. Olaf Bollingberg died Nov. 18, 1963. She married Robert McCormick in June 1969 in Mesa, Ariz. She lived in Bethany Homes, Fargo and the last few years in Lutheran Home of the Good Shephard.
She is survived by sons, John (Margaret) Bollingberg, Bremen, and Byron (Mary) Bollingberg, Orange Park, Fla.; daughters, Muriel (Sig) Moen, Phoenix, and Karen (Glen) Olson, Payson, Utah; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Bremen.
Visitation: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, with an 11 a.m. prayer service, Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.
Burial: Eden Lutheran Cemetery, Bremen.
Gilbert M. Tufto
NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. -- Gilbert M. Tufto, 87, New Rockford, formerly of Sheyenne, N.D., died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, in Carrington (N.D.) Health Center.
Gilbert M. Tufto was born Sept. 30, 1911, the son of Hans and Gurina (Hensrud) Tufto, in Tolna, N.D. He worked on several farms and the creamery in McVille, N.D. He worked for North Central Granite Co., Devils Lake. He married Martha Kolstad on Nov. 4, 1972, in Devils Lake. They moved to Sheyenne, where he worked for as city night watchman until his retirement. He entered the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford, in August 1997.
He is survived by his wife; a stepdaughter-in-law, Norma Kolstad, Sheyenne; two stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Clarice (Peter) Dahl, Fortuna, N.D.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Mabel, Hannah, Gena, Irene, Emma, Rachael and Jennie; and brothers, Odean, Clarence, Gordon and Floyd.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, First Lutheran Church, Sheyenne.
Visitation: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Sheyenne.
Tena Hatten
LARIMORE, N.D. -- Tena Hatten, 92, Larimore, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, in Larimore Good Samaritan Center, where she had lived since Nov. 21, 1995.
Tena Smilden was born Oct. 24, 1906, the daughter of Hans and Maren (Totland) Smilden, in Moraine Township, Grand Forks County, rural Larimore. In 1914, she moved with her family to Larimore, where she attended school. She moved to Illinois in the early 1940s and lived in Sterling. She owned and operated a boarding house and worked for Northwestern Steel and Wire Mill, Sterling. She married Eugene Hatten on Dec. 4, 1954, in Sterling. They lived in Tampico and Rock Falls, Ill. They worked as custodians for Rock Lake Bank. Eugene Hatten died May 28, 1991. She returned to Larimore.
She is survived by stepdaughters, Linda Wirth, Sarah Guthrie and Agnes Hatten, all in Illinois; a stepson, Jim Hatten, in Illinois; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by stepsons, Bill and Orville; a stepdaughter, Myrtle Gulbranson; four sisters; and five brothers.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Larimore.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Bakke Funeral Home, Larimore, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore.
Edith Christenson
BEMIDJI -- Edith Christenson, 83, Bemidji, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Edith June Gregerson was born June 24, 1915, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Anderson) Gregerson, in Bemidji. She attended school in Tenstrike, Minn. She married Arthur Christenson on June 30, 1933, in Hines, Minn. They lived in Turtle River, Minn., Tenstrike, and St. Charles and Geneva, Ill. She had lived in Bemidji for the past five years. Arthur Christenson died in 1981.
She is survived by daughters, Darlene Zvara and Anita (Bob) Spangler, both of Bemidji; sons, Darrel (Katina), Athens, Greece, and Leonard (Eileen), Bemidji; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter; and brothers, Allan and Helmer.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Bethel Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Blackduck, Minn., in the spring.
Helen M. Olson
BEMIDJI -- Helen M. Olson, 89, Bemidji, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, in Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji.
Helen Marguerite Gulsvig was born Nov. 1, 1909, the daughter of Peder and Mable (Lysen) Gulsvig, in Hancock, Minn. She moved with her family to Nevis, Minn., where she graduated from high school. She lived in Nevis and cared for her brothers and sisters. She married Tilean Olson on March 24, 1931, in Princeburg, Minn. They moved to Bemidji in 1933. She worked for the Bemidji School District and the College Lutheran Center in food preparation. Tilean Olson died March 14, 1973.
She is survived by a daughter, Bernice Pearson, Sunrise, Minn.; sons, Duaine (Eileen), St. Paul, and Dale (Sharon), Bemidji; a daughter-in-law, Jean Olson, Fargo; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ada Bewick, Bemidji, Wilma Stewart, in Australia, and Mable (Joe) Engstrom, Orr, Minn.; and brothers, Herbert (Meg), Wadena, Minn., and Wyman (Gerry), Edina, Minn.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorraine; a son, Philip; a daughter-in-law, Rosemarie Olson; a son-in-law, Ronald Pearson; and brothers, Archie and Guy.
Services: 2 p.m. today, First Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji. Memorials are suggested to First Lutheran Church (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Alvin O.W. Hansen
HILLSBORO, N.D. -- Alvin O.W. Hansen, 74, Hillsboro, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, in Hillsboro Medical Center Hospital.
Alvin O.W. Hansen was born June 19, 1924, the son of Chris and Valborg (Ottesen) Hansen, in Hunter, N.D., where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1949. He married LuVerne Payne on May 17, 1949, in Moorhead. They lived in Hunter and later moved to Hillsboro. He worked for the Gunkelman's seed plant in Grandin, N.D., and Concrete Sectional, Grand Forks. He drove school bus in Hunter and Hillsboro.
He is survived by his wife; children, Greg (Patty), Elizabeth Hansen and Neal (Kathy), all of Hillsboro, Keith (Shari), Moorhead, Claudia Hansen, Yelm, Wash., Laura (Jeff) Muhle, Fargo, and Todd, Seattle; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Lorene Medin, Elk River, Minn., Irene Quittschreiber, Irrigon, Ore., Dolly Odell, Richmond, Mo., Valborg Hansen, Marble, Minn., Maryann Johnson, Lebanon, Ore., and Janice Miller, Halstad, Minn.; and brothers, CR, Junction City, Ore., and Robert, Mesa, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard; and a brother, Donald.

Fern L. Markestad
MADDOCK, N.D. -- Fern L. Markestad, 79, Maddock, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at home.
Fern Lillian Allan was born April 4, 1919, the daughter of Everett and Lilly (Randle) Allan, in Twin Lake Township, Benson County, N.D., where she attended school. She graduated in 1936 from Benson County Agricultural and Training School, Maddock. She worked for the Haukness Store in Maddock. She married Edwin Markestad on Jan. 2, 1942, in York, N.D. They lived and farmed in Maddock. Edwin Markestad died Sept. 11, 1995.
She is survived by a daughter, Vonda Lea Markestad, Broomfield, Colo.; a son, Dean (Rachel), Maddock; three grandchildren; a brother, Floyd (Arlene), Rugby, N.D.; and sisters, Verna (Walter) Williams, Fargo, and Margie (Gordon) Pfau, Broomfield.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Ira, and two infants; and a sister, Thylis Allan.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock.

Francis K. Kibler
MAYVILLE, N.D. -- Francis K. Kibler, 82, Fargo, formerly of Mayville, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, in MeritCare Medical Center, Fargo.
Francis K. Kibler was born Sept. 18, 1916, the son of Florentine and Emma (Moengen) Kibler, in Mayville, where he graduated from high school. He operated the meat locker in Portland, N.D. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He moved to Washington, where he worked as a meat cutter. He lived in Fargo and later moved to Rochester, Minn. He married Maybelle Tuve on July 1, 1949, in Zumbrota, Minn. They moved to Fargo, where he worked for Swift & Co., in 1950. From 1962 to 1982 he worked for the Grand Forks Air Force Base in the commissary as a meat cutter. He retired and returned to Mayville.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Gary, Mayville, and Paul (Kathy), Moorhead; a daughter, Kathryn Kibler, Park River, N.D.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Gertrude Pederson, Fargo.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Marvin and Elmer; and a sister, Anna.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Mayville Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, Baker Funeral Home, Mayville.

Elmer P. White Sr.
FORT TOTTEN, N.D. -- Elmer P. White Sr., 62, Fort Totten, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Elmer P. White Sr., WAphAHa SkaA', White War Bonnet, was born May 31, 1936, the son of Patrick White and Mae Whiteman. He attended school in St. Michael, N.D. He was on the police force. He completed the BBTD training in Fort Yates, N.D. He also attended Body and Fender school in Omaha, Neb. He married Evangeline White on Feb. 26, 1957.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Denise, Marsha, Janet, Melissa (Bentley), Bonnie (John), and Lorraine (Lee), all of St. Michael, N.D., and Jeanne (Tim), Devils Lake; sons, Elmer Jr. (Maggie), Timo Sr. (Renae), and Frank (Roxanne), all of St. Michael; 67 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his mother; a sister, Florestine (Ken) Dunn; and brothers, Clayton (Pam) Rainbow and Jim (Bonnie) Clairmont.
He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; his father; his stepmother, Dorothy White; his stepfather, Donald Whiteman; a brother, Clarence; and a sister, Lorraine.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Recreation Center, St. Michael.

John W. Umstead
John W. Umstead, 75, formerly of Grand Forks, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, in Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton.
John William Umstead was born Aug. 30, 1923, the son of John and Minnie (Theal) Umstead, in Genoa, Neb. He attended school in Genoa and Fullerton, Neb. He worked for the Nebraska Highway Department. He served in the U.S. Military from 1946 to 1968. He worked at UND, retiring in 1984. He married Irene Anderson in 1966, in Sisseton, S.D. She died Dec. 3, 1993.
He is survived by brothers, Leslie, Fullerton, and Richard, Nebraska; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Mitchell, East Grand Forks, and Patricia Stellon, Grand Forks.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Grafton.
