Betty Lund

FINLEY, N.D. -- Betty Lund, 62, Finley, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Union Hospital, Mayville, N.D.

Betty Lund was born Feb. 11, 1936, the daughter of Hans and Bessie (Tantland) Lund, in Finley, where she attended school. She attended Interstate Business College in Fargo. She worked for Judge Simley in Finley. She later moved to Bismarck and worked in the Tax Department. She attended beauty school in Bismarck, where she received her license. She worked for shops in Grand Forks and Larimore, N.D. She returned to Finley, where she set up her own shop. She took care of her parents. She sold Avon and worked at the Finley Cafe until her retirement.

She is survived by brothers, Hans Jr. (Marie), Carson City, Nev., and Benton, Finley; and sisters, Mary Sweeney and Ellen (Don) Erickson, both of Grand Forks.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Finley Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Finley, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Finley Cemetery.

Mabel E. Fundingsland

Mabel E. Fundingsland, 95, formerly of 2505 13th Ave. S., died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, in Bryan, Texas.

Mabel E. Holwell was born Dec. 10, 1902, the daughter of Frederick and Margaret (Gibson) Holwell, in St. Joseph Township, Pembina County, N.D. She attended school in Leroy, N.D. She married Omar Fundingsland on June 29, 1919, in Cavalier, N.D. They lived in Walhalla, N.D., Wolf Point, Minn., Parshall, N.D., Puposky, Minn., and Bemidji, before moving to Grand Forks in 1974. Omar Fundingsland died Dec. 21, 1986. She had lived in Bryan since November 1997.

She is survived by sons, Dale (Mabel), Minot, and Robert (Judy), Arlee, Mont.; daughters, Phyllis (Gaylan) Olson, Esther Stinar and Marlene (Duane) Hanson, all of Grand Forks, Rita (Arnie) Enge, Seattle, Carol Fundingsland, San Jose, Calif., and Dianne (Tom) Hilde, Bryan; 27 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a stepgrandson; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard; daughters, Joyce, Estelle, Veryl, and Alaine; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, United Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 4 to 6: 30 p.m. Wednesday, with a 4: 45 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks.

Fred H. Held

DEVILS LAKE -- Fred H. Held, 71, Devils Lake, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at home.

Fred H. Held was born Oct. 7, 1927, the son of Fred and Gladys (Christofferson) Held, in Cando, N.D. He grew up and graduated from high school in Rock Lake, N.D. He served in World War II. He returned to the Rock Lake area. He married Margaret Birnie on Aug. 29, 1947, in Rock Lake. They lived and farmed in the Rock Lake area until 1963, when they moved to Devils Lake. He did house moving and worked for Gamble-Robertson Co., Devils Lake. He had been employed by Arnie Berg, Starkweather, N.D., since 1984.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Kristi (Arne) Berg, Starkweather, and Yvonne (Joe) Kearns, Seoul, Korea; sons, Don (Donna), Mukilteo, Washington, Daron, Minot, and John, Pleasant Hill, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Virginia (Ken) Blazer, Devils Lake, and Charlotte Kakala, Mesa, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; and a sister, Charmaine Jemtrud.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, First United Methodist Church, Devils Lake.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Aaker, Dunnigan & Brooks Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bisbee (N.D.) Cemetery.

Military Rites: Halling/Scobba Post No. 129 American Legion, Bisbee.

Kenneth H. Skogen

BEMIDJI -- Kenneth H. Skogen, 70, Laporte, Minn., formerly of Bemidji, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

Kenneth Herbert Skogen was born March 15, 1928, the son of Henry and Clara (Ostgarden) Skogen, in Kenyon, Minn. He grew up and graduated from high school in Cambridge, Minn., in 1946. He attended St. Cloud State University and received his bachelor of science degree in 1951. From 1951 to 1954, he served in the U.S. Army. He taught high schools in Minnesota and North Dakota until 1962. He married Corrine Moen on Sept. 7, 1963, in Hendricks, Minn. They lived in Brookings, S.D., while he attended South Dakota State University, receiving his master of science degree in 1965. He was an assistant professor of sociology at Bemidji State University from 1965 to 1983. He retired last spring.

He is survived by his wife; and sisters, Mabel Ruel, Minneapolis, and Hattie Anderson, Cambridge.

He was preceded in death by a brother; and two sisters.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Bemidji.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: 11 a.m. Thursday, Hendricks Cemetery.

Lewis W. Brotton

LEEDS, N.D. -- Lewis W. Brotton, 66, Leeds, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, in Heart of America Medical Center, Rugby, N.D.

Lewis Willis Brotton was born March 22, 1932, the son of Willis and Hulda (Beck) Brotton, in Wolford, N.D. He moved with his family to York, N.D., in 1937 where he attended school. He worked on the Curt Follman farm until the age of 18, when he began working for the railroad, first in Rugby and later in New Rockford, N.D. He worked on the Orville & Ralph Pierson farm, York. He moved to Leeds and worked on the Ole Solberg farm and Moller's Inc., both of York. He lived briefly in Memorial Home, Maddock, N.D., before moving to Long-term Care Unit in Heart of America Medical Center.

He is survived by a brother, George, Portland, Ore., and a sister, Dorothy, of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Fern.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Leeds Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: York Cemetery in the spring.

David D. Rushton

PEMBINA, N.D. -- David D. Rushton, 82, Ulen, Minn., formerly of Pembina, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

David D. Rushton was born Dec. 3, 1916, the son of James and Edna (Earl) Rushton, in Pembina, where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a mechanic in St. Vincent, Minn. He married Myrtle Easter on Dec. 14, 1948, in Hallock, Minn. They lived in Pembina, where he owned and operated a service station. In 1950 they moved to Grand Forks, where he worked for Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1957 they moved to Ulen, where he continued to work for the railroad. He retired in 1980.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Darlene (Jerry) Fjeld, Fargo, Diana (Samuel) Mahler, Fertile, Minn., Patty Olson, Mahnomen, Minn., Kathy (Clayton) Thompson, West Fargo, and Laura Samuelson, Miami; sons, David Jr., Moorhead, and Dennis and Eugene, both of Twin Valley, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Edna Rushton, Ulen.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; a stepson, Francis; and a brother, James.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ulen.

Visitation: 5 to 9 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Vincent Cemetery (Burnside, Mahnomen).

Robert Jury

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Robert Jury, 62, Thief River Falls, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at home.

Robert Lee Jury was born July 4, 1936, the son of Myron and Janet (Gunderson) Jury, in Fullerton, N.D. He attended school in Fullerton and graduated from high school in Ellendale, N.D., in 1954. He attended Ellendale State Normal and Industrial College, and received his master's degree from Northern Colorado in Greeley. He married Dorothy Schaller on Dec. 21, 1956, in Ellendale. They made their home in Ellendale until 1958, when they moved to Ravinia, S.D., where he taught school. They moved to Dunseith, N.D., and then to Thief River Falls in 1967. He taught education, health and coached in Thief River Falls, retiring in 1997.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Joan Jury, Minneapolis; sons, Mike (Diane), Warroad, Minn., and Bill (Kathy), Shell Lake, Wis.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathy (Buzz) Burkhardt, Ellendale; and brothers, Myron (Mary), Minnewaukan, N.D., James (Dorothy), Omaha, Patrick (Cathy), Fort Worth, Texas, and George (Vicky), Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Sherry Filbert.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.

Kenneth Smythe

LANGDON, N.D. -- Kenneth Smythe, 82, Cando, N.D., formerly of Grand Forks, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Resthaven Healthcare Center, Cando.

Kenneth Smythe was born Jan. 14, 1916, the son of John and Estella (Norton) Smythe, in Munich, N.D. He attended school in Huron Township, Cavalier County, N.D. In 1964, he moved to Bemidji with his family, before moving to Grand Forks. In 1985, he moved to Cando and entered the Resthaven Healthcare Center. He farmed and later worked for Old Dutch Potato Chip Co. in Grand Forks.

He is survived by daughters, Genevieve (John) Smith, Marysville, Wash., and Donna Hightshoe, Puposky, Minn.; sons, James (Bonnie), St. Paul, David (Brenda), Laporte, Ind., and Timothy (Lydia) and Mark (Linda), both of Bemidji; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pearl Smythe, Cando.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Charles; and a sister, Gladys Peterson.

Services: Will be held in the spring (Brooks, Langdon).

Orlin Greening

LANGDON, N.D. -- Orlin Greening, 58, Langdon, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, in Maple Manor Care Center, Langdon.

Orlin Darell Greening was born July 23, 1940, the son of Reinhold "Ray" and Marie (Zabel) Greening, in Wales, N.D. He attended school in Wales and graduated from high school in Langdon in 1958. He attended UND. In the mid-1960s, he moved to Rochester, Minn., and in 1977 to Maple Manor.

He is survived by his mother; a sister, Donna (Danny) Devine, Langdon; and a brother, Loren (Gloria), Vine Grove, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a sister, Glorene Mae Greening.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, United Lutheran Church, Langdon.

Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. today, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, and one hour before services in the church. Memorials are suggested to Maple Manor Care Center.

Esther Wessler

DRAYTON, N.D. -- Esther Wessler, 98, formerly of Bowesmont and Drayton, N.D., died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, in Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock, Minn., where she had lived since 1994.

Esther Alphild Bjork was born May 16, 1900, the daughter of John and Ida (Felt) Bjork, in Starbuck, Minn. She moved with her family to Bowesmont, where she attended school. She married Adolph Wessler on Aug. 19, 1919, in Cavalier, N.D. They made their home in Bowesmont until 1978, when they moved to Drayton. Adolph Wessler died in 1983.

She is survived by daughters, Sylvia Kirkeby, Grafton, N.D., and Frances (Ed) Falos, Grand Forks; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Edith and Hulda; and a brother, Rudolph.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Drayton United Methodist Church.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Adamson-Austin Funeral Home, Drayton.

Burial: Bowesmont Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Bowesmont Cemetery Association.

Benjamin Andrew Buechler

STARKWEATHER, N.D. -- Benjamin Andrew Buechler, 2-month-old son of the Rev. Robert and Debbie Buechler, Starkweather, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Benjamin Andrew Buechler was born Sept. 30, 1998, the son of Robert and Debbie (Tostenson) Buechler, in Cando, N.D.

He is survived by his parents; grandparents, Yvonne and Gordon Cowan, Churchs Ferry, N.D., Orville and Karen Tostenson, Leeds, N.D., Jean and Ken McCormick, North Palm Beach, Fla., and Alan and Sue Buechler, Denville, N.J.; and great-grandparents, Evelyn Cranmer, Manahawkin, N.J., Louise Buechler, Lumberton, N.J., and Grace Cowan, Devils Lake.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, Trinity-Bergen Lutheran Church, Starkweather.

Visitation: 2 to 9 p.m. today, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.
