Sister Anne Turmes

CROOKSTON -- Sister Anne Turmes, Crookston, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in Mount St. Benedict Monastery, Crookston.

Anne Sybil Turmes was born to Theodore and Josephine (Acher) Turmes, in Madison, Minn. She attended school in Madison and Howard, Minn. In 1936, she joined the Benedictine Sisters in Crookston, receiving the name, Sister Bertha. She resumed the use of her baptismal name in 1968. As a professed religious, she was assigned to food service and domestic work at St. Vincent Hospital, Crookston, St. Mary's Hospital, Detroit Lakes, and at parish convents in East Grand Forks, Mahnomen, Bemidji, and Moorhead, Minn., Lefor, N.D., and the bishop's residence in Crookston. She served as manager in St. Gertrude's House of Studies in St. Paul. She served in home health care in Minneapolis until 1982 and in Crookston until 1986. She resided in Mount St. Benedict and served as clerk in the clothing area of the Holy Family Shoppe until 1990.

She is survived by brothers, Nicholas, Montrose, S.D., and Joseph, Boise, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony; and a sister, Helen Christine.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Mount St. Benedict Monastery, Crookston.

Visitation: 4: 15 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 4: 15 p.m. prayer service, Sacred Heart Chapel of Mount St. Benedict Monastery.

Burial: Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Crookston (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).

Olga Oswald

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Olga Oswald, 94, Thief River Falls, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in Convalescent Nursing Care Unit of Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.

Olga Marie Larson was born April 28, 1904, the daughter of Oscar and Marie (Melin) Larson, in Warren, Minn. She attended school in Alvarado, Minn., and worked on the family farm. She married Sam Oswald Dec. 15, 1928, in Duluth. They farmed in Warren, then moved to Rosewood, Minn., in 1941. In 1973, they moved to Thief River Falls. Sam Oswald died Dec. 15, 1976. She had lived in the CNC Unit for six years.

She is survived by daughters, Arlyce (Rodney) Twistol and Ardelle Kjellberg, both of Thief River Falls; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lena Larson, Warren.

She was preceded in death by a son; a daughter; brothers, Algot, Axel, Willie, Hilbert and Elmer; and sisters, Anna Larson, Alma Hill and Ida Ostrand; and a son-in-law, Jack Kjellberg.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Sunday, Evangelical Free Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.

Margaret Mason

DEVILS LAKE -- Margaret Mason, 81, Devils Lake, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.

Margaret Mason was born Sept. 12, 1917, the daughter of Marvin and Marie (Tucker) Mason, in Devils Lake, where she graduated from high school. She attended Mayville (N.D.) State Teachers College. She moved to Washington, D.C., and worked as a clerk-typist for the Pentagon. In 1950, she returned to Devils Lake and worked for North Dakota Telephone Co., as a clerk. In 1978, she moved into Good Samaritan.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Good Samaritan Center.

Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the center.

Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.

LaNeva P. Narum

LaNeva P. Narum, 77, Grand Forks, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in Altru Hospital.

LaNeva Pearl Peyton was born July 18, 1921, the daughter of Fred and Montie (Landness) Peyton, in Kennebec, S.D. She graduated from high school in Volga, S.D., in 1938. She attended Business College in Sioux Falls, S.D. She married Orvall Narum on March 14, 1943, in Brookings, S.D. They lived in Chicago, Dallas, Davenport, Iowa, and Grand Island, Neb., before moving to Grand Forks in March 1952. She worked in the Office of the Superintendent of Schools in East Grand Forks from 1959 to 1979, the last 10 years as Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. Orvall Narum died Sept. 16, 1982.

She is survived by a son, Peyton "Skip" (Bernice), Watertown, S.D.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lloyd (Katherine), Swisher, Iowa.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Saturday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Amundson Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Sunnywood Gardens, Grand Forks. Memorials are suggested to Calvary Lutheran Church or American Lung Association.

Rosamond Hanson

CANDO, N.D. -- Rosamond Hanson, 91, formerly of Cando, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at home in Wichita, Kan.

Rosamond DeArton was born May 8, 1907, the daughter of Laurence and Alice (Morgan) DeArton, in Maza, N.D. She attended school in Maza and Devils Lake. She attended business school in Minneapolis. She married Martin Hanson on July 31, 1934, in Cando. They lived on a farm southwest of Cando. Martin Hanson died Sept. 1, 1939. She moved into Cando, where she worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for the County Farm Advisor's Office and later for Murray Furniture and McLeod Abstract and Title Co. In June 1952 they moved to Santa Rosa, Calif., where she continued to work as a secretary and bookkeeper. She retired in 1973 and moved to Redding, Calif., in 1979. In 1980 she moved to Wichita and lived with her son.

She is survived by a son, Larry (Louise); three grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nora Johnson, Santa Rosa.

She was preceded in death by brothers, John, Melvin and James.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando.

Prayer Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando.

Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorials are suggested in Rosamond's name to Audi Theatre Memorial Fund, c/o Towner County Record Herald, 423 Main, Cando, 58324, or to Hospice Inc., 313 S. Market, Wichita, 67202.

Gene H. Eng

GRAFTON, N.D. -- Gene H. Eng, 67, Grafton, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Unity Medical Center, Grafton, N.D.

Gene H. Eng was born June 6, 1931, the son of Henry and Pearl (Laurier) Eng, in Loma, N.D. He attended school in Grafton. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He returned to Grafton. He married Phyllis Orsund on Sept. 30, 1954, in Grafton. He worked as a construction foreman for Adamsen Construction until 1982. He worked for Paul Brodeur Construction until retiring in 1995.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Michael and Rick, both of Grafton; four grandchildren; brothers, Ron (Marlene), Grafton, and John (Mary), Minneapolis; and sisters, Audrey (Jarl) Pederson, Grand Forks, Kay (Jim) Trouba, Jamestown, and Mary (Arlis) Bischoff, Grafton.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry; and sisters, Frances and Lucille.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. Saturday, St. John's Catholic Church, Grafton.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Church Cemetery.

Military rites: Grafton VFW Post #9367.

Verna Mousley

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Verna Mousley, 89, Thief River Falls, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at home.

Verna Becker was born March 28, 1909, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Hawkins) Becker, in Thief River Falls, where she graduated from high school in 1926. She attended UND. She taught in rural schools in Pennington and East Marshall, Minn., counties. In the 1930s, she worked for Pennington County Extension Department. She married Emmett Mousley on Aug. 28, 1943. He died Sept. 15, 1980.

She is survived by a son, Frank, Appleton, Wis.; daughters, Catherine Mousley, New York, Margaret Mousley Kielty, Richfield, Minn., Sheryl Mousley, Minneapolis, and Maureen Mousley, Santa Rosa, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter; and a brother, Joseph.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery.

Robert B. Norstebon

PORTLAND, N.D. -- Robert B. Norstebon, 80, Portland, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Veterans Hospital, Fargo.

Robert Bernard Norstebon was born Nov. 8, 1918, the son of Anders and Clara (Nelson) Norstebon, in Portland, where he attended school. He worked for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, Calif. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943, and served during World War II. He was discharged in 1946. He returned to work for Douglas Aircraft. He later moved to Portland.

He is survived by a brother, Willard (Kathleen), Grand Forks; and sisters, Doris (Norman) Larson and Helen (Jerry) Mastroianna, both of Fargo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. Sunday, Aurdal Lutheran Church, Portland.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Aurdal Cemetery (Baker, Mayville, N.D.).

Clara Wells

COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Clara Wells, 84, Cooperstown, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Griggs County Nursing Home, Cooperstown, where she had lived since October 1997.

Clara Overby was born Jan. 23, 1915, the daughter of Bernt "Ben" and Sigrid "Sarah" (Larson) Overby, in Binford, N.D., where she attended school. She married Theodore Nelson on Sept. 16, 1936, in Binford, N.D. They farmed in Luverne, N.D., until 1950, when they moved to Cooperstown. Theodore Nelson died Feb. 19, 1962. She married Edward Wells on July 28, 1972. They made their home in Cooperstown. Edward Wells died Aug. 6, 1991.

She is survived by daughters, Joyce (David) Voldal, Poway, Calif., Mavis (Louis) Thibodeaux, Houma, La., Marilyn (Ronald) Johnson, Parkville, Mo., and Dianne (Michael) Forcier, Fargo; five step-children; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Alma Watne, Binford; and a brother, Albin, Libby, Mont.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Cooperstown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested in Clara's name to the Griggs County Nursing Home Association or Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown.

Grace I. Grindeland

HATTON, N.D. -- Grace I. Grindeland, 94, Hatton, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Tri-County Nursing Home, Hatton, where she had lived since the fall of 1991.

Grace Irene Mark was born April 27, 1904, the daughter of John and Margit (Aasen) Mark, in Hatton. She attended school in Hatton and Mayville (N.D.) Normal School. She moved to Minneapolis where she attended school to be a beauty operator. She worked in beauty salons in Minneapolis. She married Obert Grindeland on Dec. 31, 1925, in Chicago. They lived in Fargo. Obert Grindeland died in November 1957. She lived in Fargo, where she worked for Gardner Hotel until her retirement.

She is survived by daughters, Virginia (John) Hook, Burnsville, Minn., and Grace (Daniel) Schmidt, Davenport, N.D.; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, John (Ione), Seattle.

She was preceded in death by sons, Robert, Wayne and Gene; daughters-in-law, Adeline and Ruby; brothers, Loren and Edgar; and sisters, Mayme Kjorlien and Gertrude Sondreal.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Goose River Lutheran Church, Hatton.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Bilden Funeral Home, Hatton.

Burial: Goose River Cemetery.

Neil E. Gleeson

CANDO, N.D. -- Neil E. Gleeson, 61, Cando, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Neil Elliot Gleeson was born Oct. 14, 1937, the son of Benjamin and Alma (Johnson) Gleeson, in Cando, where he graduated from high school in 1957. He attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. He worked on the police forces in Devils Lake and Edmore, N.D. He returned to Cando, where he worked for Cando Dry Cleaners and later for Cando Lumber Co.

He is survived by a sister, Jeannine Gleeson, Cando.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Cando Lutheran Church.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando.
