Carol 'V.B.' Larson
Carol "V.B." Larson, 73, 3210 Cherry St., died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at home.
Carol Van Brunt was born Nov. 22, 1924, the daughter of Benjamin and Elsie (McCauley) Van Brunt, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She attended school in Riverhead, Long Island, N.Y., and graduated in 1941. She worked as a secretary in Riverhead. She married Lt. Claude Larson on Nov. 12, 1944, in Riverhead. They moved to Grand Forks in 1959. She was manager and buyer of several clothing stores in Grand Forks: Norbys, Buttreys and Mandels. She owned and operated Silk Chik. In 1984, she moved her business downtown and renamed it Carol's Boutique. She operated there until spring of 1997 and closed due to the flood. Claude Larson died July 30, 1971.
She is survived by sons, Van (Diane), Brian (Joyce) and Jon (Sheena), all of Grand Forks, and Mark (Ranae), West Fargo; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Thelma Barth, Riverhead.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Briody.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with a 5 p.m. prayer service, Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel, S. Washington St., and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Marguerite E. McCann
Marguerite E. McCann, 81, Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Grand Forks, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998.
Marguerite E. Sartell was born March 9, 1917, the daughter of Charles and Agatha (Limprich) Sartell, in Sartell, Minn. She married John McCann on March 26, 1936, in St. Cloud. She lived in St. Cloud until 1941, when they moved to Grand Forks. In 1954, they moved to Sioux City. They retired and moved to Pharr, Texas, in 1979. They lived in St. Cloud during the summer since 1994.
She is survived by her husband; children, Jack (Jackie), Clear Lake, Minn., Pat (Norma), Ankeny, Iowa, Becky (Stu) Sievert, Duluth, Thom (Donna), Kansas City, Mo., Tim (Bev), Arvada, Colo., Bill (Donna), St. Louis, Barb (Tom) Gill, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Pam (Randy) Hoing and Shelley (Bob) Lessard, both of Sioux City, and Molly (Scott), Matney, Garland, Texas; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Thomas, Minneapolis, and Charles, Wadena, Minn.; and a sister, Jeannette Halstad, in California.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Zona and Elaine; and brothers, Robert and Richard.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church, Sartell.
Visitation: 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Daniel Funeral Home, St. Cloud.
Burial: St. Francis Xavier Parish Cemetery.
Katherine 'Katie' Wald
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Katherine "Katie" Wald, 79, Thief River Falls, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, in the Convalescent Nursing Care Unit, Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Katherine Senger was born Nov. 20, 1918, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Meyer) Senger, in Karls-
ruhe, N.D. In September 1919, the family moved to Glencross, S.D., where she attended school. She later moved and worked in Kansas City. In 1976, she moved to Thief River Falls. She married Frank Wald on Sept. 25, 1976. He died July 13, 1995.
She is survived by stepchildren, Don (Arlene) Wald, Stephen, Minn., Bob (Rita) Wald, St. Hilaire, Minn., Carole Wald, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Renee (Brian) Chapman, Union City, Calif., and Kathy (John) Connelly, Minnetonka, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Wendellin and John; and sisters, Rose, Elizabeth and Bertha.
Services: 11: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services.

Doyle Martin
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Doyle Martin, 39, Thief River Falls, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, as the result of an accident on his farm in East Valley Township, Marshall County, Minn.
Doyle Allen Martin was born Nov. 18, 1959, the son of Earle and Norma (Lien) Walton, in Thief River Falls. He graduated from Middle River (Minn.) High School. He worked at Arctic Cat, Thief River Falls. He married Stacy Larson on June 14, 1980, in Holt. In 1982, he started farming with his father-in-law, Don Larson, and later on his own. In 1981, they moved to East Valley Township.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Mitchell and Anthony, at home; his parents, Middle River; sisters, Linda (Richard) Johnson, Badger, Minn., Rhonda (Duane) Nelson, Thief River Falls; and brothers, James (Tammy) Martin, Holt, and Kirk Walton, Thief River Falls.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Brenda Walton and Denise.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Nazareth Lutheran Church, Holt.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services.
Burial: Holt Cemetery.
Frank Barta
PISEK, N.D. -- Frank Barta, 83, Pisek, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in the Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton.
Frank W. Barta was born May 12, 1915, in Ops Township, Walsh County, N.D., where he attended school. He lived and farmed in Ops Township until retiring in the early 1990's.
He is survived by sisters, Mary Foerster, Fargo, and Georgia Lunski, Grand Forks; and brothers, Louis, Grafton, Herman Barta, St. Thomas, and Valerian (Jerry), Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Mildred Bartuska and Marie Barta.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Luke's Catholic Church, Veseleyville, N.D.

Earl Efteland
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Earl Efteland, 79, Thief River Falls, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Convalescent Care Unit, Thief River Falls.
Earl Marvin Efteland was born Sept. 11, 1919, the son of Palmer and Ragna (Swensrud) Efteland, in Thief River Falls, where he attended school. He married Eunice Marjorie Nelson on April 5, 1940, in Thief River Falls. He worked several jobs until 1943. He served in the U.S. Army, during World War II. He returned to Thief River Falls, where he worked for Iron Fireman, Nash Finch Co., Mobil, Stordahl Trucking, and Western Oil and Fuel.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Larry (Sharon), Curtis, and James (Judy), all of Thief River Falls; daughters, Shirley Austad, Thief River Falls, Darlene (Jerry) Olson, Newfolden, Minn., and Nancy (Kevin) Shafer, Cloquet, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Myles, John and Morris.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday in Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Shirley Stevenson
CAVALIER, N.D. -- Shirley Stevenson, 67, Cavalier, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, in Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier.
Shirley Jean Ault was born March 23, 1931, the daughter of Clifford and Cora (Sellheim) Ault, in Hensel, N.D. She grew up and attended school in Cavalier. She taught at the Park Center School, Neche, N.D. She married Lawrence Stevenson on Oct. 27, 1950, in Cavalier.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Melanie Martin, Russellville, Ky., Marilyn Stevenson, Thornton, Colo., and Melissa (Scott) Martin, Champlin, Minn.; sons, Jon (Connie), Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jeff (Jane), Cavalier; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her mother, Cora Neuman, Cavalier; and brothers, Lyle, Cavalier, and Al, Huff, N.D.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday in United Lutheran Church, Cavalier.

James R. 'Duddy' Anderson
HILLSBORO, N.D. -- James R. "Duddy" Anderson, 64, Hillsboro, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
James R. Anderson was born Sept. 29, 1934, in Hillsboro, where he grew up and attended school. He attended Wahpeton State School of Science and Louisiana State University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He returned to Hillsboro. He married Bonnie Petrie on June 17, 1960, in Hillsboro, where they have lived since. He worked for U.S.D.A. and the Soil Conservation Service until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Michael (Karen), Columbia Heights, Minn.; daughters, Jodi (Tom) Nelson, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and Cindi (Andy) Nordick, Fargo; five grandchildren; and sisters, Elaine (Ed) Herrick, Abercrombie, N.D., and Alice Darling, Oakland, Calif.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hillsboro.
Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. today in Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro.

Dale D. Debertin
Dale D. Debertin, 79, East Grand Forks, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at home.
Dale D. Debertin was born March 18, 1919, the son of Andrew and Julia (Anderson) Debertin, in Plaza, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He married Marjorie Swedberg on Nov. 23, 1946, in St. Paul. They lived in East Grand Forks, where he was a partner in the Valley Motor Company until his retirement in 1979.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Maridee Debertin, Minneapolis, and Joan (Terry) Meland, Grand Forks; sons, Karl (Phyllis), Tacoma, Wash., and Jay (Becky), Denver, Colo.; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred.
Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Stennes Funeral Chapel, East Grand Forks.

Loretta Hiltner
LANGDON, N.D. -- Loretta Hiltner, 86, Langdon, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, in Cavalier County Memorial Hospital, Langdon.
Loretta Wirth was born Oct. 29, 1911, the daughter of Michael and Martha (Janouskie) Wirth, in Munich, N.D., where she graduated in 1930. She attended college in Grand Forks. She moved to Langdon in 1933. She married Marcel Mathieu on May 1, 1937, in Langdon. He died Feb. 26, 1971. She married Alphonse Hiltner on May 1, 1973, in Mount Carmel, N.D.
She is survived by her husband; sisters, Beatrice Houghton, Everett, Wash, Geraldine Tholkes, Langdon, Madelyn Hoffmann, Martha Rose Henderson, and Lois Dawley, all of Munich, and Valery Hudson, Fargo; and a brother, Norman, Devils Lake.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Victor and Lester; and a sister, Frances.
Services: 10 a.m. today in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Langdon.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Langdon (Brooks, Langdon).
Emma Doyle
EGELAND, N.D. -- Emma Doyle, 90, Paynesville, Minn., formerly of Egeland, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, in Paynesville Area Hospital.
Emma McLaren was born March 23, 1908, the daughter of Robert and Tena (Svalde) McLaren, in Fairdale, N.D., where she attended school. She married Clarendon Doyle on Dec. 21, 1936, in Langdon, N.D. They lived in Egeland, where they worked as custodians at the Egeland School. Clarendon Doyle died Oct. 29, 1980. She moved to Paynesville in 1991. She moved to Assumption Home of Cold Spring, Minn., in 1996.
She is survived by sons, Leon (Elizabeth), Wimbledon, N.D., and Dennis (Nancy), Coon Rapids, Minn.; daughters, Sharon (Brad) Johnson, Maple Grove, Minn., and Donna (David) Napolitan, Boynton Beach, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, David, Wahpeton, N.D.; and sisters, Loretta Watt, Milton, N.D., and Ida Dobmeier, Park River, N.D.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Powell; a son, Gerald; a granddaughter; brothers, Norman, Everal, Walter (Scotty) and Lloyd; and a sister, Irene.
Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, First Presbyterian Church, Egeland.
