Leo Kalinoski
WINGER, N.D. -- Leo Kalinoski, 81, Winger, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Leo Kalinoski was born April 3, 1917, the son of Nick and Mary (Brozocowski) Kalinoski, in Greenbush, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1935. He married Marcy Mrozek on Nov. 23, 1943, in Leo, Minn. They lived and farmed in Red Lake Falls, Minn., until 1971. They also operated M&L Chicken House near Terrebonne, Minn. In 1971 he bought Winger liquor store and moved into Winger in 1972. He owned the Lengby (Minn.) liquor store from the mid-1970s to the late 1970s. The M&L Liquor Store was sold in the early 1980s.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Van (Andria "Sue"), Dent, Minn., and Gary, Grand Forks; a daughter, Paulette (Patrick) Hanson, Red Lake Falls, Minn.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, August (Joan), Milwaukee; Victor (Lila), Thief River Falls, and Clem (Helen), Greenbush; and a sister, Joan (Victor) Soller, Albert Lea, Minn.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Andrew, John and Eddie; and a sister, Angie Ruebush.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mahonomen.
Visitation: 4: 30 to 7: 30 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and 9 a.m. to 1: 45 p.m. Friday, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.
Burial: Conception Catholic Cemetery, Bejou.
Agnes C. Hagen
Agnes C. Hagen, 84, Parkwood Place, formerly of Valley City, N.D., died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, in Altru Hospital.
Agnes Christine Granlund was born May 3, 1914, the daughter of Bjorn and Petra (Lillelund) Granlund, in Ransom County, N.D. She attended rural school and graduated from Valley City State Teachers College. She married Clifford Hagen on July 3, 1937, in Bismarck. They farmed and she taught rural school. They moved to Kathryn, N.D., where she taught in area schools. They lived in Fort Yates, N.D., where she taught for several years. In 1977, they returned to Kathryn, and in 1989, they moved to Valley City. Clifford Hagen died March 11, 1992. She moved to Grand Forks in August 1998.
She is survived by daughters, Carlyn Stevens, Cromwell, Conn., Sandy Hagen Benson (David Carlson), Grand Forks, and Blanche (Calvin) Thoreson, Black River Falls, Wis.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sovig (Marvin) Nelson, Kathryn.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Borghild Granlund.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kathryn.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Oliver-Nathan Funeral Home, Valley City, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Standing Rock Cemetery, Fort Ransom.
Katherine 'Kate' Hamilton
FINLEY, N.D. -- Katherine "Kate" Hamilton, 29, Blanchard, N.D., formerly of Finley, N.D., died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, in Hillsboro (N.D.) Hospital.
Katherine Asp was born Nov. 19, 1968, the daughter of Noel and Norma (Fex) Asp, in Mayville, N.D. She grew up and graduated from high school in Finley. She attended North Dakota State University and Moorhead Technical College. She married Leland Hamilton on May 25, 1990, in Fargo. She served in the North Dakota Army National Guard. She worked for the Traill County Water Resource District as an engineering technician in Hillsboro. She recently moved to Blanchard.
She is survived by her husband; children, Jessica, Laura and Mark, all at home; her parents, Finley; and a brother, Charles, Missoula, Mont.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, Assembly of God Church, Finley (Quam-Plaisted-Cushman, Finley).
C. Marvin Hanson
MAYVILLE, N.D. -- C. Marvin Hanson, 64, Mayville, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, in Hillsboro (N.D.) Medical Center.
Christian Marvin Hanson was born Oct. 15, 1934, the son of Christian and Martha (Amb) Hanson, in Mayville, where he graduated from high school. He took over the family farm. He married Eloise Strand on Dec. 28, 1961, in Minneapolis. They lived on the farm. He owned and operated Hanson Gravel Service. After selling the gravel business, he kept the landscaping portion. He worked for area farmers. In 1993, they moved to Portland, N.D., and in 1998 to Mayville.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Dale (Becky) Mapel, Argusville, N.D., and Rick Mapel, Reynolds, N.D.; daughters, Jeanine (Doug) Ashbridge, Wanda Raulston and Joan Mapel, all of Bismarck; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Marion (Rollan) Knudson, Portland, and Helen (Dennis) Olson, Blaine, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mark.
Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Gran Lutheran Church, Mayville.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Gran Cemetery, Mayville.
James Gryde
EDINBURG, N.D. -- James Gryde, 68, Edinburg, N.D., died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
James H. Gryde was born June 8, 1930, the son of Joseph and Hilda (Troftgruben) Gryde, in Edinburg, where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1953. He returned to Edinburg, where he farmed. He retired in 1984. He married Carol Lesmeister Cantrell on June 6, 1976, in Edinburg. He continued to help area farmers until June 1998.
He is survived by his wife; stepdaughters, Chanin (Ed) Triplett, Kansas City, Mo., and Carla (Paul) Shuler, Grand Forks; a stepson, Corey (Litzel) Cantrell, Panama; two stepgrandsons; and a brother, Orlando, Edinburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph; and a sister, Cora.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Edinburg.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Odalen Lutheran Cemetery, Edinburg (Tollefson, Edinburg).
Carl Zimprich
JESSIE, N.D. -- Carl Zimprich, 89, Jessie, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, in Griggs County Hospital, Cooperstown, N.D.
Carl Zimprich was born Feb. 16, 1909, the son of Ingaz and Ernestine (Lux) Zimprich, in Rathsdorf, Bohemia. He moved in 1920 with his family to Everest, N.D., where he attended school, and in 1922 to Jessie. He married Irene Eggermont on Oct. 18, 1949, in McHenry, N.D. They farmed in Jessie until retiring in 1971. They continued to live on the farm.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Henry and Mark, both of Jessie; a daughter, Virginia (Kevin) Pedersen, Carrington; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Erna.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Jessie.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a 6: 40 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. prayer service, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and one hour before services in the church.

Rudy S. Sobolik
PISEK, N.D. -- Rudy S. Sobolik, 61, Pisek, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, in St. Ansgar's Health Center, Park River, N.D.
Rudy S. Sobolik was born May 4, 1937, the son of Ralph and Bertha (Melcer) Sobolik, in Ops Township, Walsh County, N.D. He graduated from high school in Pisek. He began farming with his father and later operated the family farm with brothers and sons.
He is survived by his wife, Lucie; sons, Dave (Kate), Devils Lake, Craig (Sherri) and Randal (Kris), both of Pisek, Jeff (Amy), Reynolds, N.D., Danny, Grand Forks, Andrew, Warroad, Minn., and Joel (Kris), Hoople, N.D.; daughters, Jean (Paul) Halverson, Lakewood, Colo., Shelly (James) McQuarrie, Burien, Wash., Nancy (David) Twamley, Thief River Falls, and Julie Sobolik, Pisek; 18 grandchildren; his mother, Pisek; a brother, Ivan (Pat), Pisek; and a sister, Judy (Lawrence) Omdahl, Fordville, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Elvira Farestvedt
NORTHWOOD, N.D. -- Elvira Farestvedt, 88, Brooklyn Center, Minn., formerly of Northwood, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, in Maranatha Baptist Health Care Center, Brooklyn Center.
Elvira Algren was born March 13, 1910, the daughter of Otto and Gro (Pertine) Algren, in Duluth. She attended school in Northwood. She married Nickolai Knutsen Farestvedt on May 20, 1933, in Grand Forks. They lived in Beach, N.D., Northwood, Grand Forks, and retired to the Mandt Family Farm, Northwood, in 1947. Nickolai Farestvedt died March 25, 1980. She continued to live on the farm until August 1983, when she moved to Minneapolis.
She is survived by a daughter, Arlene (Carl Benj.) Evanson, Minneapolis; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers; and an infant sister.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Washington Lutheran Church, Northwood.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Washington Cemetery, Northwood (Washburn-McReavy, Minneapolis, and Bilden, Northwood).
Milnor A. Ulland
PORTLAND, N.D. -- Milnor A. Ulland, 85, Portland, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, in Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, N.D.
Milnor Alton Ulland was born March 9, 1913, the son of Edwin and Anna (Ehlihagen) Ulland, in Mayville, where he attended school. In 1934, he moved with his family to Portland. He worked for the North Dakota State Highway Department. He was a city drayman for Portland. He was a caretaker of the green at the Mayville City Golf Course until his retirement.
He is survived by sisters, Avis (Arthur) Grandalen, and Kathryn Ayres, both of Portland; brothers, Andy (Helen), Bella Vista, Ark., Manvil (Ruth), Grenora, N.D., and Hilman (Charlene), Granville, N.D.; and a sister-in-law, Grace, Heber City, Utah.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marian; and brothers, Alvin, Sidney, and Ervin.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Bruflat Lutheran Church, Portland.

George S. Laber Sr.
CARRINGTON, N.D. -- George S. Laber Sr., 94, Carrington, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, in Carrington Health Center.
George Sebastian Laber Sr. was born Jan. 22, 1904, the son of John and Alice Laber, in Sykeston, N.D. He married Flora Kautzman on May 18, 1926, in New Rockford, N.D. They lived in New Rockford, where they farmed. They lived in Tulare, Calif., from 1981 to 1984 and in Hillsboro, Ore., from 1984 to 1985. They returned to New Rockford. Flora Laber died June 20, 1986.
He is survived by sons, George Jr. (Dianne), New Rockford, and Robert (Ruth), Tulare; daughters, Marjorie (Lyle) Kuehn, Mesa, Ariz., and Alice (Bob) Kinsey, Arcadia, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Theresa Schaack and Mary White, both of Carrington, and Alice Bloodworth, Paradise, Calif.
He was preceded in death by four brothers; and a sister.
Services: 10 a.m. today, St. John's Catholic Church, New Rockford.
Burial: St. John's Cemetery (Baker, Mayville).
Arlen J. Haug
EDINBURG, N.D.--Arlen J. Haug, 61, Fargo, formerly of Edinburg, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in Dakota Hospital, Fargo.
Arlen J. Haug was born Oct. 3, 1936, the son of Oscar and Mabel (Ulberg) Haug, in Fairdale, N.D., where he attended school. He received a Bachelors Degree in 1958 and a Masters Degree in 1959, both from UND. He began working for the State Vocational Rehabilitation Department, Bismarck, as the Assistant Director, in 1959. He married Vira Stenjhem in 1973. He moved to Fargo in 1979.
He is survived by a sister, Eunice (John) Evenson, Edinburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Duane, and an infant brother.
Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Edinburg.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Trinity Lutheran Cemetery (Tollefson, Edinburg).
Helen A. Clayton
Helen A. Clayton, 81, Grand Forks, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in Altru Hospital.
Helen Ardella Michalek was born Aug. 9, 1917, the daughter of Mike and Annie (Hibben) Michalek, in Minneapolis. She grew up and attended school in Blackduck, Minn. She married Ralph Clayton on July 2, 1938, in St. Cloud. They lived in Bemidji, Detroit Lakes, Perham and Turtle River, Minn., before moving to Grand Forks in 1949. Ralph Clayton died in July 1968. She worked at Westward Ho Motel for 12 years and later for UND, retiring as custodial supervisor of more than 25 years of service. She was a foster grandparent.
She is survived by sons, Lyle (Louise) and Glen (Jean), both of Grand Forks, and Ronald (Marge), Reynolds, N.D.; a daughter, Darlene (Thomas) Adam, Grand Forks; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brothers, John (Lydia), Minneapolis, Andrew (Evelyn), Blackduck, and Elmer, International Falls, Minn.
She was preceded in death by a grandson; a brother, Mike; and sisters, Ann Olafson, Mickey Gaba, and Margaret Clayton.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Saturday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.
