Vernon 'Chub' Halda
MAYVILLE, N.D. -- Vernon "Chub" Halda, 70, Mayville, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, in Tri-County Nursing Home, Hatton, N.D.
Vernon D. Halda was born Jan. 23, 1928, the son of Roy and Helen (Olson) Halda, in East Grand Forks. In 1930 they moved to Mayville, where he graduated from high school in 1946. He graduated from Mayville State University with a teaching degree in 1950. He taught school in Harvey, N.D., from 1950 to 1953. He married Ruth Gronhovd on Aug. 2, 1953, in Hatton. They moved to Mayville, where they operated Halda Oil as co-owners with his brother, LeRoy. He later worked for Phoenix Plumbing, Mayville, until retiring.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Ronald (Jennifer), West Fargo; daughters, Maxine (Martin) Agather, Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Nancy Halda, St. Paul; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, LeRoy and Eldon.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Mayville Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Mayville Cemetery.
William T. 'Bill' Nichols
BEMIDJI -- William T. "Bill" Nichols, 90, Bemidji, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, in Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji.
William Thompson Nichols was born Aug. 14, 1908, the son of Forrest and Jean (Thompson) Nichols, in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He moved with his family to Kensal, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He worked for Nash-Finch Co., as a salesman. He worked out of Jamestown, Bismarck and Minot. In 1938 he moved to Bemidji to work for Hamm's Beer Co., as a salesman. He married Anna Grindall on Nov. 11, 1939, in Walker, Minn. They made their home in Bemidji. They purchased the local Hamm's Beer distributorship in 1948 and later partnered with Jerry Shanahan. In the early 1950s he began spending winters in Laguna Beach, Calif., and in 1961 through 1991 wintered in Sun City, Ariz. Anna Nichols died in 1979. He married Agnes Neidenfuer on July 16, 1980, in Bemidji. She died Feb. 1, 1989. He returned to Bemidji in 1991. In 1997, he moved to North County Rehab Center and later to Beltrami Nursing Home.
He is survived by a son, William "Bill" (Liz), Bemidji; a stepson, James (Dorriene) Neidenfuer, Laguna Hills, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Maureen (Charles) Risler, Sun City; a granddaughter; and a sister-in-law, Violet Nichols, Jamestown.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, St. Philips Catholic Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
Robert J. Pederson
Robert J. Pederson, 56, 903 Shakespeare Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Altru Hospital.
Robert James Pederson was born Sept. 28, 1942, the son of Melvin and Rose (Marleau) Pederson, in South Dakota. He graduated from high school in Grand Forks in 1960. In 1961 he began working as a truck broker for Scott's Inc. He later owned and operated Scott's Inc. and Scott's Express Inc., of Grand Forks. He married Ruth Ferguson on May 26, 1962, in Grand Forks.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Bret and Bradley (Pamela), both of Grand Forks, and Brian James, Pittsburgh; three grandchildren; and a sister, Patricia (Lonnie) Damron, Roff, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Federated Church of Grand Forks.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks.
Mildred J. Loiselle
Mildred J. Loiselle, 87, Fargo, formerly of Grand Forks, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at Villa Maria, Fargo.
Mildred J. Larson was born Feb. 18, 1911, in Surrey, N.D. She grew up in Minot, where she graduated from high school. She married Maynard Evenson in Minot. She worked at Montgomery Ward, Minot. She married Ed Loiselle in Grand Forks. She worked for Bill Larson Furniture as a bookkeeper in Grand Forks. She retired in 1976. Both husbands preceded her in death. She moved to Fargo in 1997 after the flood.
She is survived by a son, Doran (Sharon) Evenson, Fargo; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Irvin (Selma), Minot; and sisters, Irene (Max) Cotton and Gladys Jung, both of Portland, Ore.
Services: 11 a.m. today, Church of the Nativity, Fargo.
Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Fargo.
Gilsi K. Halldorson
MOUNTAIN, N.D. -- Gilsi K. Halldorson, 93, Mountain, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at home.
Gilsi K. Halldorson was born Aug. 30, 1905, the son of Kristjan and Maria (Hillman) Halldorson, in Mountain. He graduated from Milton High School. He was a farmer, carpenter and plumber in the Mountain area. He married Johanna Bjornson on Oct. 15, 1938, in Mountain. She died April 1, 1978. He married Violet Thorfinnson Martin on June 24, 1979, in Mountain. She died Oct. 22, 1994. He spent winters in California in the 1980s and early 1990s.
He is survived by daughters, Marlene (Orville) Simundson, Cavalier, N.D., and JoAnne (Vern) Fleming, El Paso, Texas; sons, Kenneth (Karen) and Barney, both of Bismarck, Robert (Bonnie), Edinburg, N.D., and Dennis (Mary), Fargo; step daughters, Jeanine Rowe, Fresno, Calif., Joyce (Paul) Vogel, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Janice (William) Pulliam, Point Clear, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson; brothers, Dori, Walter and Karty Halldorson; sisters, Olla Sigurdson, Mollie Johnson, Runa Benjaminson, Anna Sigurdson and Veiga Johannson; and a step daughter, Julie Martin.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Vikur Lutheran Church, Mountain.

Sybil J. Isaacson
PERTH, N.D. -- Sybil J. Isaacson, 90, Lisbon, N.D., formerly of Perth, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Lisbon Medical Center.
Sybil Strandness was born Aug. 9, 1908, the daughter of Rev. John and Julia (Hovey) Strandness, in Churchs Ferry, N.D. She attended school in Deering and Bisbee, N.D., and graduated from Perth High School. She received her bachelor's degree from Minot State Teachers College and taught school in Arena, Wolseth, Omemee and Perth, N.D. She married Lester Isaacson on June 21, 1934, in Perth. They operated businesses at Perth until retiring in 1974. They spent winters in Tucson, Ariz., and lived at Lake Forest, Calif., before moving to Cando, N.D., in 1987. Lester Isaacson died Oct. 29, 1989. She moved to Lisbon in February 1997.
She is survived by sons, Eugene, Huntington Beach, Calif., John, Devils Lake, and David (Marilyn), Lisbon; a daughter, Marilyn (Reino) Tarkisinen, Sherwood, Ore.; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; and a sister.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Perth.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, N.D., and before services in the church.

Emil R. 'Mickey' Wysocki
MINTO, N.D. -- Emil R. "Mickey" Wysocki, 88, Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Minto, died of heart failure in the Lifecare Center.
Emil Richard Wysocki was born June 30, 1910, the son of Frank and Frances Wysocki, in Minto, where he attended school. He worked on area farms. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He lived in Los Angeles, where he worked as a downtown gas station lube man and for the Yellow Cab Co. as lube supervisor. In 1946, he moved to Las Vegas. In 1958, he worked for the Test Site. He retired in 1972.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie; daughters, Jean Wysocki and Sharon Davidson, both of Las Vegas, and Ruth Fallon, Orlando, Fla.; sons, Tom (Ruth), Canyon Lake, Calif., and Michael and Dale, both of Las Vegas; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Ambrose, Minto, Stan, Grafton, N.D., and Florian, Grand Forks; and a sister, Dorothy Leff, Detroit.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarion.
Services: Were held in Nevada.
Peryle Ulseth
Peryle Ulseth, 81, Fargo, formerly of East Grand Forks, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.
Peryle Hanson was born May 4, 1917, the daughter of Charles and Emma (Bolton) Hanson, in East Grand Forks, where she graduated from high school. She graduated from Bemidji State Teachers College. She married Lt. George Ulseth on April 26, 1944, in Tyler, Texas. She taught elementary school and was a broker in real estate in Grand Forks and Eau Claire, Wis.
She is survived by her husband; a brother, Harvey (Ann), Sun Lake, Ariz.; and a sister, Gladys (Earl) Hanson, Fargo.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby; and a brother, Edward.
Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Mendenhall Presbyterian Church, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: Two hours before services in the church.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks, in the spring.
William J. Seiler
NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. -- William J. Seiler, 96, New Rockford, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford.
William Joseph Seiler was born April 13, 1902, the son of Josef and Katharina (Ackerman) Seiler, in Wells County, Bremen, N.D. He attended school in Richardton, N.D., New Rockford and Fargo. He married Josephine Elizabeth Lee on June 17, 1941, in Bremen. They lived and farmed on the Seiler family farm in Wells County until the mid-1960s, when they moved into New Rockford. He was a charter member of the New Rockford Council Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife; sons, William Jr. (Pat), Fairfax, Va., Brother John, Richardton, and Ted (Barbara), Beaver Creek, Ore.; daughters, Joyce (Ron) Cunningham, Hollidaysburg, Pa., Rose (Michael) Dorer, St. Paul, Peggy Seiler, Fargo, Rita (Ron) Morey, Kirkland, Wash., and Barbara Seiler, Cornelius, Ore.; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Seiler, New Ulm, Minn.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Frank, Leo and Joseph; and a sister, Mary.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, St. John's Catholic Church, New Rockford.
Visitation: Noon to 6: 30 p.m. today in Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service today in the church.

Elmer Johnson
BEMIDJI -- Elmer Johnson, 89, Bemidji, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at home.
Elmer Magnus Johnson was born April 17, 1909, the son of Eric and Mary (Grondahl) Johnson, in Cyrus, Minn., where he graduated from high school. He attended Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, from 1929 to 1931. He married Karen Wendella Josvanger on July 22, 1932, in Ridgeway, Iowa. They lived in Cyrus until 1937, when they moved to Decorah. He worked for John Deere in Morris, Minn., until 1965 when they moved to Bemidji. He was owner and partner in General Trading Auto Parts Store in Bemidji from 1965 to 1977, when he retired.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Arland, Bemidji, and David (Sonia), Detroit Lakes, Minn.; and a sister, Jeanette Cronan, Benson, Minn.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Julius and Toraf; and a sister, Helena.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Bemidji (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
John J. Sykes
John J. Sykes, 57, 2603 Seventh Ave S., died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Altru Hospital.
John Jeffery Sykes was born Nov. 23, 1941, the son of Agnes Sykes, in St. Paul. He resided in San Haven and later in the Development Center, Grafton, N.D. He moved to Grand Forks in 1986.
He is survived by friends.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Hope Covenant Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery (Amundson, Grand Forks).
