Julius Johnson
CANDO, N.D. -- Julius Johnson, 97, Cando, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in Resthaven Healthcare Center, Cando.
Julius Johnson was born Jan. 2, 1901, the son of Martin and Anna (Erickson) Johnson, in Perth, N.D., where he attended school. He married Ella Marie Martinson on Nov. 10, 1924, in Perth. They farmed near Perth, until moving to Newville, N.D., in 1941. They moved to Cando in 1949, where he worked for Great Plains Lumber Co. until his retirement. Ella Johnson died Dec. 7, 1977. He entered Resthaven Healthcare Center in December 1994.
He is survived by a son, Willard (Isabell), Williston; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Clara Zentz, Cando.
He was preceded in death by sons, Melvin and Robert; a daughter, Elvira; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Menus; sisters, Martha and Elizabeth; two half brothers; and two half sisters.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Cando Lutheran Church, Cando.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando.
Burial: Perth Cemetery.
Magdalena 'Lena' Leiphon
DEVILS LAKE -- Magdalena "Lena" Leiphon, 85, Devils Lake, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Magdalena Rombs was born Dec. 18, 1912, the daughter of Joseph and Angelica (Frank) Rombs, in Rugby, N.D. She moved with her parents to Devils Lake in 1926, where she attended school. She married Paul Leiphon on Oct. 8, 1934, in Crary, N.D. They began farming in 1935 until retiring in 1968. They moved to Devils Lake.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Joseph (Donna) and Eugene (Mary), both of Devils Lake, and Alex (Theresa) and Francis (Kim), both of Crary; daughters, Mary Walter, Nevada, Iowa; Angie (Mark) Kitsch, Starkweather, N.D., and Betty (Roger) Wheeler, Lakota, N.D.; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, John, Devils Lake; and sisters, Emma Laturnus, Fargo, and Mary Volk, Rocklin, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a child; and brothers, Anton and George.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, and 8: 30 to 9: 30 a.m. Saturday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake.
Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.
Larry Jorgenson
LEEDS, N.D. -- Larry Jorgenson, 51, Leeds, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, in UniMed Medical Center, Minot.
Larry Keith Jorgenson was born March 14, 1947, the son of Palmer and Bernice (Bennes) Jorgenson, in Rugby, N.D. He graduated from high school in Leeds in 1965, and from UND in 1969, with a degree in chemical engineering. He attended graduate school at Arizona State University in Tempe. In 1971, he received his master's degree in business administration. He worked for the Motorola Corp. in Arizona. He married Susan Crewson on Aug. 28, 1971, in Sawyer, Minn. They moved to Leeds in 1972, where they farmed.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Emily Jorgenson, Seattle; a son, Andrew, at home; his mother, Leeds; and sisters, Lois Quamme, Grand Forks, and Lynda Jorgenson, Anchorage, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Philip.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Leeds.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Leeds Lutheran Cemetery.
Elvester Stromberg
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Elvester Stromberg, 85, Thief River Falls, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Convalescent Nursing Care Unit, Thief River Falls.
Elvester Sinclaire Stromberg was born Dec. 23, 1912, the son of Carl and Gustava (Rafteseth) Stromberg, in Nekoma, N.D. He married Edna Marion Gilchrist on Nov. 23, 1941, in Thief River Falls. He worked for the L.B. Hartz Store in Thief River Falls. They moved to Karlstad, Minn., where they owned and operated the Hartz store. They moved to Seattle, where he worked for a grocery store. They returned to Thief River Falls in 1981, where he retired. Edna Stromberg died Oct. 22, 1997.
He is survived by a sister, Myrtle Johnson, Thief River Falls; stepsisters, Alice Brubakken, Thief River Falls, Esther Brubakken, Hoople, N.D., and Lucille Bergman, Grand Forks; and stepbrothers, Arnold Hanson, Grafton, N.D., Harold Hanson, St. Charles, Mo., Harvey Hanson, Thief River Falls, and John Hanson, Pine River, Minn.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Clifford and Clarence.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Green Funeral Home Chapel, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. Friday and one hour before services in the chapel.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Matthew Brossart
LEEDS, N.D. -- Matthew Brossart, 15, Leeds, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Rugby (N.D.) Medical Center.
Matthew Ronald Brossart was born July 25, 1983, the son of Ronnie and Rita (Schmaltz) Brossart, Rugby. In lived in Leeds and on a farm near Leeds. He attended school in Cando, N.D. Due to health reasons, he was mostly homebound.
He is survived by his parents; sisters, Mandy, Callie and Abbie, all of Leeds; a brother, Luke, Leeds; grandparents, Elizabeth (Lynn) Carlson, Clem and Marian Schmaltz, all of Rugby.
Services: 11: 30 a.m. Tuesday, St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Leeds.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Anderson Funeral Home, Rugby.
Burial: Little Flower Catholic Cemetery, Rugby.
Luverne Schneider
LANGDON, N.D. -- Luverne Schneider, 74, Langdon, formerly of Hannah, N.D., died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Maple Manor Care Center, Langdon.
Luverne F. Schneider was born April 6, 1924, the son of Ray and Elsie (Johnson) Schneider, in Mt. Carmel, N.D. He moved with his family to Hannah, where he graduated from high school in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to Hannah, where he began farming. He retired in 1988 and moved to Langdon.
He is survived by brothers, Louis (Jean) and Elmer (Gerry), both of Langdon; sisters, Pat (Emeric) Metzger, Langdon, and Mary (Harris) Hillestad, Alabama; and a sister-in-law, Darylene Schneider, Langdon.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Sylvester.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Langdon.
Visitation: 1 to 3 p.m. today, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, and a 4 p.m. prayer service today in the church.
Ervin L. Marthe
ESMOND, N.D. -- Ervin L. Marthe, 76, Esmond, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at home.
Ervin Lorenz Marthe was born Nov. 25, 1922, the son of John and Theresia (Leier) Marthe, in East Fork Township, Benson County, N.D., where he attended school. He married Margaret Horner on Dec. 30, 1948, in Esmond. They lived and farmed on the Marthe family farm. He also did carpentry work. He retired from farming in 1977.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Richard (Betty), Pullman, Wash., Robert (Donna), Harvey, N.D., and Tim (Deb), Fargo; daughters, Carol Mertens, Devils Lake, Joan Mellema, Cass Lake, Minn., Louise (Jim) Rickford, Fargo, and Mary (Anton) Hoff, Bowdon; 16 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; a great-granddaughter; 15 step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Ann Wentz and Adeline Anderson, both of Esmond, and Hildegarde Garman and Aurelia (Alt) Walz, both of Kenmare, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Lena Marthe, Esmond; and a brother-in-law, Bob Brown, Fargo.
He was preceded in death by brothers, John and Daniel; sisters, Agnes Severson, Isabelle Marthe and Josephine Brown; and sons-in-law, Cecil Mertens and Jim Mellema.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, Nelson Funeral Home, and after 6 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.
Burial: Church cemetery.
J. Alvin M. Shaffer
MADDOCK, N.D. -- J. Alvin M. Shaffer, 84, Maddock, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in St. Aloisius Medical Center, Harvey, N.D.
John Alvin Milne Shaffer was born April 2, 1914, the son of Hartley and Theo (Merriman) Shaffer, in Maddock, where he attended school. He graduated from Benson County Agricultural and Training School in 1933 in Maddock. He married Jean Milne on Nov. 1, 1936, in Maddock. They assisted his mother with the management of the Maddock Hospital from 1936 to April 1939. They moved to his parents' farm near Maddock, where they farmed until retiring in 1979. They moved into Maddock in 1997.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Neil (Barbara), Townsend, Mont.; daughters, Darlene (Robert) Everson, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Bonnie (James) Schulz, Lakeland, Minn., Judy (Larry) Wright, and Brenda (Marc) Rogelstad, both of Townsend, and Shelley (Martin) Gustafson, Kasson, Minn.; and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Herrillis "Bill."
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Maddock.
Wayne Lish
BEMIDJI -- Wayne Lish, 78, Bemidji, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, in North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bemidji.
Wayne Robert Lish was born Nov. 13, 1920, the son of Benjamin and Ethel (Craven) Lish, in Bemidji. At the age of 2, his mother died, and he was raised by his grandparents, Alda and Jarrett Craven. He grew up and attended school in Bemidji, graduating in 1938. He worked for Kenfeld Box Factory. He married Irene Gagnon on Nov. 25, 1940, in Bemidji. The moved to Calumet, Minn. He worked in Bovey, Minn., as an iron ore chemist at the Lurch Brothers Lab. They moved to Bemidji, where he worked for his uncle, Earl Bucklen as a plumber. He worked for Johnson Controls as a journeyman plumber, steam fitter and installing pneumatic controls. He retired in 1983. They spent winters in Tucson, Ariz.
He is survived by his wife; children; Barbara (Michael) Flynn, Tucson, and Michael (Sharon) Lish, Bemidji; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Corrine (Russell) Burkman, Minneapolis; and a brother, Kenneth, Sparks, Nev.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Terrence.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
Joseph E. LaCasse
Joseph E. LaCasse, 94, Sunshine Terrace, East Grand Forks, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in the Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Larimore, N.D.
Joseph E. LaCasse was born April 30, 1904, the son of Alfred and Rose LaCasse, in Lambert, Minn. He graduated from high school in 1922, and attended UND. He worked as a salesman in California. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He returned to the Grand Forks area. He married Myrtle Gilleland on Dec. 14, 1945, in Reno, Nev. He worked for Johnson-Gillander Construction, Richmond Engineering and LeRoy Knoff, retiring in 1969.
He is survived by his wife; son Joseph "Fred," Healdsburg, Calif.; daughter Joan (Lyle) Baird, Puyallup, Wash.; stepsons, Charles Gilleland, Staples, Minn., and Robert "Lefty" Gilleland, East Grand Forks; three grandchildren; and a sister, Delvina Schultz, Heber City, Utah.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter, and a sister, Laura.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Carole Witzel
LANGDON, N.D. -- Carole Witzel, 55, Langdon, died Feb. 11, 1999, in Cavalier County Memorial Hospital, Langdon.
Carole Jean Spratt was born Aug. 23, 1943, the daughter of Joseph "Jack" and Nora (Wolford) Spratt, in Langdon, where she attended school. She married Thomas Witzel on Jan. 9, 1960, in Langdon. They lived and farmed in West Hope Township, Cavalier County, N.D. In 1982, they moved to Langdon. She had worked with the Cavalier County Sheriff's Office as a dispatcher since 1991.
She is survived by her husband; children, Julie (Steve) Hoffarth, Grand Forks, Tyler (Gwen), Langdon, and Melissa (Chris) Johnson, Grafton, N.D.; two granddaughters; brothers and sisters, Raymond (Mary) and Ernest (Sharon), both of Minneapolis, Mabel (Elmer) Jordan, Langdon, Nora (Norman) Wirth, Devils Lake, Ethel (Ernest) Hall, Munich, N.D., and Donna (Larry) Estenson, Warwick, N.D.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers and sisters, Earl, Joseph Jr., Robert, Neva Bachmann, Doris Westphal, Anna May Jordan and Bette Zeis.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, United Methodist Church, Langdon.
