Edward Matejcek was born
Aug. 29, 1910, the son of William and Lena (Vasichek) Matejcek. in Sauter Township, Walsh County, N.D., where he attended school. He married
Geneva Trenda on Oct. 25, 1932, in Grafton, N.D. They lived and farmed in the Brocket area until retiring. They spent winters in Mesa, Ariz. Geneva Matejcek died
April 30, 1993.
He is survived by sons, Gordon (Erma), Brocket and Larry (Susan), Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughters, Mayvis (Sandford) Jallo, Park River, N.D., Doris (Robbin) McMorran, Lawton, N.D., and Karen (Duncan) Wallace, San Diego, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and brothers, William and Lawrence, both of Brocket.
He was preceded in death
by a sister, Evelyn Skalicky.
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, United Lutheran Church, Brocket.
Visitation: 4 to 9 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: ZCBJ-Kosobud Cemetery, Lankin, N.D.
Earl M. Gilbertson
ANETA, N.D. -- Earl M. Gilbertson, 65, Aneta, formerly of Grafton, N.D., died
Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in Aneta Parkview Health Center.
Earl Myron Gilbertson was born
Sept. 30, 1933, the son of Edwin and Minnie (Eik) Gilbertson, in Grand Forks, where he attended school. He entered the State Developmental Center, Grafton, in November 1971. He moved to Park River, N.D., in October 1987. On Nov. 30, 1998, he moved to Aneta Parkview Health Center.
He is survived by a niece.
Services: 1: 45 p.m. today, All Faiths Chapel, State Developmental Center.
Visitation: One hour before services in the chapel.
Burial: Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Mentor, Minn., in the spring (Henriksen-Kamrowski, Grafton).
Esther B. Sehrt
WALHALLA, N.D. -- Esther B. Sehrt, 90, Walhalla, died
Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, in Cavalier County Memorial Hospital, Langdon, N.D.
Esther B. Christopherson was born
Feb. 27, 1908, the daughter of John and Ingeborg (Hjelmstad) Christopherson, in Milton, N.D. She grew up and attended school in Palmero, N.D., before moving back to Milton, where she also attended school. She married
Frank Sehrt on July 1, 1929, in Milton. They farmed in the Walhalla area. They moved into Walhalla in 1958. Frank Sehrt died
Aug. 11, 1980.
She is survived by a daughter, Frankie (Camille) Carrier, Walhalla; a son, Joel (Carol), Walhalla; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Clara Markholt, Park River, N.D.
She was preceded in death
by a granddaughter, two great-grandsons, three brothers and a sister.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Walhalla-Park Center Presbyterian Church.
Visitation: 6: 30 to 7: 30 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, in the church.
Burial: Walhalla Hillside Cemetery

Helen Olafson
Helen Olafson, 80, 524 N. 17th St., died
Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Larimore, N.D.
Helen Thompson was born
April 20, 1918, the daughter of Alfred and Helna (Dahl) Thompson, in Austin, Minn., where she grew up. She married
Gustaf Olafson on June 22, 1949, in Crookston. She lived in Grand Forks, Park River, N.D., and Larimore. She moved into Good Samaritan Nursing Center in the fall. Gustaf Olafson died
in 1979.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Lerud and Deborah Olafson, both of Grand Forks; a grandson; and a sister, Agnetha Jacobson, Grand Forks.
She was preceded in death
by four brothers and three sisters.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Stennes Funeral Home Chapel, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: Two hours before services in the chapel.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks, in the spring.
Peter F. Raynowska
Peter F. Raynowska, 86, Torrance, Calif., formerly of Grand Forks, died
Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in Little Company of Mary Hospital, Torrance.
Peter F. Raynowska was born
Sept. 10, 1912, the son of Paul and Antonia Raynowska, in Lawrence, Mass. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and worked in Civil Services at Grand Forks Air Force Base. He worked part time for the Grand Forks Senior Center until his retirement. He moved to Torrance three years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; a son, John, daughters, Janet and Jody; and a grandson.
Merle O. Johnson
BEMIDJI -- Merle O. Johnson, 63, Bemidji, died
Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Merle Owen Johnson was born
Nov. 23, 1935, the son of Gerhard and Mildred (Pletcher) Johnson, in Britt, Iowa. They moved to several cities in Minnesota before moving to Hamel, Minn., where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He returned to the Minneapolis area where he worked until moving to Bemidji in 1996.
He is survived by sons, Scott (Kristen), Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Richard, Robbinsdale, Minn.; two grandsons; brothers, William (Dar), Elk River, Minn., Gerald (Jan), Minneapolis, and Roger; and sisters, Marge (Don) Orgon, Bemidji, Marie (Bob Lloyd) Baumeister, Isle, Minn., and Doryce (Jerry) Robinson, Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and an infant brother and sister.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Grace Fellowship, Brooklyn Park.
Burial: Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Olga A. Kocourek
BEMIDJI -- Olga A. Kocourek, 87, Bemidji, died
Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Olga Agnette Landro was born
May 23, 1911, the daughter of Lars and Nilsine (Nilsdatter) Landro, in Lidgerwood, N.D., where she graduated from high school in 1930. She attended Valley City (N.D.) Teacher College, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Lidgerwood. She married
Edward Kocourek on Oct. 26, 1933, in Veblen, S.D. She lived in Fargo and Minneapolis, where she worked at JCPenney Co. for 26 years. She retired in 1973. She then moved to Bemidji.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary (Robert) Melchior, Bemidji; a son, John (Jackie), Chaska, Minn.; six granddaughters; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sally Carter, Placerville, Calif.
She was preceded in death
by a brother, John; and sisters, Anna Knudsen, Mable Straus, Lilly Jahoda and Caroline Eliason.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, First Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.

Donald L. Fontaine
CROOKSTON -- Donald L. Fontaine, 69, Crookston, died
Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, in Riverview Nursing Home, Crookston.
Donald Fontaine was born
June 6, 1929, the son of Earl and Ethel (Brenager) Fontaine, in Dahlen, N.D., where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Army on Feb. 19, 1948. He was discharged Feb. 16, 1952, and returned to the area. He married
Betty Jean Johnson on Dec. 16, 1953, in Crookston, where they made their home. He worked for Great Northern Railway, which later became Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired as a conductor in the late 1980s. Betty Fontaine died
May 18, 1997.
He is survived by daughters, Beverly (Steve) Menke, Minot, Lonnie Fontaine, Crookston, and Bonnie (Randy) Boushey, East Grand Forks; sons, Donald Jr., and James Earl (Lori), both of Crookston; 13 grandchildren; his mother, Minot; sisters, Yvonne (Leroy) Bursau, Minot, and Doris Roberts, Kalispell, Mont.; and a brother-in-law, Gene Pounds, in Montana.
He was preceded in death
by a daughter, Sherry King; his father; and a sister, Delores Pounds.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Sacred Heart Chapel at Mount St. Benedict, Crookston.

Willard Sellheim
CAVALIER, N.D. -- Willard Sellheim, 77, West Fargo, formerly of Cavalier, died
Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at home.
Willard Sellheim was born
April 2, 1921, the son of John and Mary (Skaro) Sellheim, in Hensel, N.D., where he attended school. He worked and farmed in the Hensel area until moving to Cavalier, where he worked for Olson Motors and Cavalier Public School. He retired to West Fargo in August 1996. He served in the U.S. Army. He married
Clara Schwartz Anderson on June 23, 1951.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Corliss (Gerald) Nilsen, Moorhead, Judy (Mike) Sorrell, Redding, Calif., Debbie Narlock, Gonvick, Minn., and Marylou (Regan) Gourde, Grand Forks; a son, Richard Grega, Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Virgil and Leonard, both of Mesa, Ariz., Robert, Brainerd, Minn., and Richard, Adams, N.D.; and sisters, Joy Ferguson, Jamestown, N.D.; JoAnn Meier, Grafton, N.D., and Darlene Bjerke, Park River, N.D.
He was preceded in death
by brothers, John and Gordon; and a sister, Betty.

Ernest 'Ernie' G. Thompson
PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Ernest "Ernie" G. Thompson, 76, Park River, died
Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in St. Ansgar's Health Center, Park River.
Ernest G. Thompson was born
March 3, 1922, the son of Chester and Mary (Vogel) Thompson, in Fertile Township, Walsh County, N.D., where he attended school. He attended Walsh County Agricultural School, Park River, graduating in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He farmed with Joe Thompson. He farmed with his brothers, Tommy and Wally until his retirement in 1982. He married
Dorothy Bena on Dec. 29, 1962, in Park River.
He is survived by his wife; brothers, Thomas (Junice), Wallace (Lucyle), and Emmett "Slim" (Lorraine), all of Park River, and Robert (Betty), Jacobson, Minn.; and sisters, Irene Clemenson, Park River, and Edna (Wallace) Gunhus, Grafton, N.D.
He was preceded in death
by a brother, Chester; and a sister, Betty Kinsala Borge.

Mary A. Maresh
PISEK, N.D. -- Mary A. Maresh, 89, Pisek, died
Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at home.
Mary A. Jelinek was born
April 3, 1909, the daughter of John and Katerina (Hodny) Jelinek, in Rusford Township, Walsh County, N.D. She attended school in Pisek. She married
Alexander Maresh on June 19, 1935, in Pisek. They farmed in Fordville, N.D., before moving to Pisek, in 1944, where they also farmed. Alexander Maresh died
Feb. 9, 1981.
She is survived by a son, Rayner (Ann), St. Cloud, Minn.; a daughter, Pearl (Dennis) Whelan, Browns Valley, Minn.; five grandchildren; a sister, Sister Dianne Maresh OSB, Mission, Texas; a brother, Al (Aileen), Pisek; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Jelinek, Pisek.
She was preceded in death
by brothers, John, Alfonce and Anton.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, St. John's Catholic Church, Pisek.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services all in the church.

John C. Grover
HANNAFORD, N.D. -- John C. Grover, 78, Hannaford, died
Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
John C. Grover was born
Aug. 24, 1920, the son of Adolph and Amanda (Christ) Grover, in Leal, N.D., where he attended school. In 1936, his family moved to Hannaford, where he graduated from high school. He married
Pearl Bjor on June 19, 1942, in Cooperstown. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942. After his discharge in 1945, they moved to Hannaford, where he worked at Security State Bank before buying the grocery store, which he owned and operated for nine years. He then returned to Security State Bank, where he worked until retiring in 1985.
He is survived by his wife; a son, John (Sharon), Hannaford; daughters, Kathy (Lyonel) Erickson, Hannaford, and Nancy (Bryan) Wiger, Plainfield, Ind.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Annabel Stover, Alexandria, Va.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Faith Lutheran Church, Hannaford, and 1: 15 p.m. Saturday, Memory Gardens, Valley City, N.D.
Visitation: 1 to 7 p.m. today, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and one hour before services in the church.
