Caroline Johnson
MADDOCK, N.D. -- Caroline Johnson, 106, Dickinson, N.D., formerly of Maddock, died
Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, in St. Benedict's Health Center, Dickinson.
Caroline Muri was born
May 17, 1892, the daughter of Bent and Randi (Froholm) Muri, in Normania Township, Benson County, N.D., near Churchs Ferry, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Oliver Johnson in 1930. They farmed in Normania Township until 1938 when they began working for area farmers. In 1940, they bought a farm north of Maddock, and in 1946, they bought a farm east of Maddock. Oliver Johnson died
in 1948. She continued to farm until retiring in 1963. She lived in Maddock until moving to Dickinson in 1989. In 1990, she became a resident of St. Benedict's Health Center.
She is survived by sons, Burdett, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Carlyle (Rita), Dickinson; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death
by an infant daughter; four sisters; and a brother.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock.
Visitation: 9 a.m. until the time of services in the church.
Burial: Church Cemetery.
Marie Schledorn
EDMORE, N.D. -- Marie Schledorn, 94, Edmore, died
Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, in Lakota (N.D.) Good Samaritan Center.
Marie Vander-Heiden was born
Jan. 20, 1904, the daughter of Albert and Sarah (Van Dyke) Vander-Heiden, in Pella, Iowa. She moved with her family to Edmore, where she attended school. She married
Frank Schledorn on Nov. 12, 1921, in Devils Lake. They farmed in Lawton, N.D., and Edmore until retiring in 1971. Frank Schledorn died
Sept. 22, 1976. She continued to live in Edmore until moving to Devils Lake. She became a resident of Lakota Good Samaritan in January 1998.
She is survived by sons, Frank (Doris), Bozeman, Mont., Robert (Clarence), Mesa, Ariz., and Ted (Judy), Thousand Oaks, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and sisters, Margaret Nelson and Eva Charon, both of Devils Lake, Dora Cline, Cour D'Lane, Idaho, Elsie Timboe, Everett, Wash., and Sally Ronningen, Paso Robles, Calif.
She was preceded in death
by a son, Bernard; sisters, Alice, Lena, and Irene; and a brother, Albert.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Concordia Lutheran Church, Edmore.
Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. today, Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Edmore Cemetery.
Myrtle O. Wilson
CROOKSTON -- Myrtle O. Wilson, 102, Crookston, died
Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston.
Myrtle Orilla Hovdesven was born
Jan. 28, 1896, the daughter of Arne and Emilie (Sveen) Hovdesven, in Cottonwood, Minn., where she attended school. She attended St. Olaf College, graduating in 1918. She taught high school in Beltrami, Minn. She married
Henry Wilson in 1921. In July 1937, they moved from Beltrami to Crookston. Henry Wilson died
Nov. 13, 1957. She spent several years caring for her mother. On Sept. 28, 1993 she moved to Villa St. Vincent.
She is survived by her children, Evelyn (Neal) Johnson, Kerrville, Texas, Marilyn (Norman) Brue, Forest City, Iowa, David (Marcella), Mitchell, S.D., and Carolyn (Duane) Eklin, Plymouth, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by a grandson; a sister, Evelyn Jacobson; and a brother, E.A.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today in Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
Recca L. Kunkel
DEVILS LAKE -- Recca L. Kunkel, 94, Devils Lake, died
Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Recca L. Klick was born
Nov. 23, 1904, the daughter of Herman and Louise (Wittkop) Klick, in Lawton, N.D. She attended school in Devils Lake and graduated from high school in Webster, N.D. She worked for Kunkel Grocery in Southam, N.D. She married
Rhinehard "Rhiney" Kunkel on Sept. 8, 1926, in Niagara, N.D. They made their home and farmed in Southam, until moving into Southam where they were cream buyers. In 1942, they purchased the restaurant and bar in Southam. Rhinehard Kunkel died
Sept. 23, 1950. She continued to operate the business until retiring in 1975. She moved to Devils Lake and made her home with her son Richard.
She is survived by daughters, Bonny Lou (Laurence) Dykhoff, Minot, and Donna Mae (John) Lind, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; sons, Dr. Richard, Devils Lake, and Loren (Mabel) and Georgina, both of Eugene, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Irene Klick, Devils Lake, and Charlotte Klick, Medford, Ore.
She was preceded in death
by sons, Bruce and Gerald; three sisters; and four brothers.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday in Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.

Linda Bernard
LARIMORE, N.D. -- Linda Bernard, 53, Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Larimore, died
Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at home.
Linda Rae Marien was born
July 20, 1945, the daughter of Alfred and Vera (McIntosh) Marien, in Larimore, where she graduated from high school in 1963. She attended UND and Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz. She married
Charles Bernard on May 10, 1966, in Chandler, Ariz. They moved to Colorado Springs in the early 1980s. She owned and operated a retail gift shop.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Marnie (Jeff) Cade, Phoenix; a son, Daniel, Chandler; her mother, Larimore; and a sister, Carol (William) Williams, Eagar, Ariz.
She was preceded in death
by her father.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Larimore.
Burial: Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore (Bakke, Larimore).
Cleo N. Johnston
CROOKSTON -- Cleo N. Johnston, 82, Alexandria, Minn., formerly of Crookston, died
Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Knute Nelson Memorial Home, Alexandria.
Cleo N. Nelson was born
Sept. 7, 1916, the daughter of Walter and Agnes (Bjoin) Nelson, in Crookston, where she graduated from high school in 1934. She graduated from UND and began teaching English in Crookston schools. She married
Harrison Thompson on Oct. 9, 1941. He died
in July 1951. She earned certification in the field of library science at the University of Minnesota in the late 1950s. She worked as Polk County, Minn., librarian until retiring. She married
Ed Johnston in 1978. He died
Dec. 24, 1985.
She is survived by a son, Harrison (Julie) Thompson, Alexandria; two granddaughters; a brother, William, Branson, Mo.; and sisters, Amber (Leo) Eberlein, Burbank, Calif., and Marilyn (Dr. Charles) Brannon, Santa Maria, Calif.
Services: Will be held in Alexandria.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston (Anderson, Alexandria).
Dorothy Ebert
GRAFTON, N.D. -- Dorothy Ebert, 87, Grafton, formerly of Langdon, N.D., died
Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton.
Dorothy Ebert was born
Aug. 21, 1911, the daughter of William and Anna (Koppin) Ebert, in Langdon, where she attended school. She lived in the Langdon area until 1987, when she moved to Lutheran Sunset Home.
She is survived by two nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death
by brothers, Roy and Arthur; and a sister, Gertrude Stevenson.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday in Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon.

Anna C. Dahl
Anna C. Dahl, 94, Valley Memorial Home North, died
Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in the nursing home.
Anna Christine Hedstrom was born
Dec. 9, 1904, the son of John and Christine (Nygaard) Hedstrom, in Leonard, N.D. She grew up and attended school in Aneta, N.D. She married
Swen Alex Dahl on Nov. 30, 1925, in Aneta. Swen Dahl died
in 1930. She continued to live in Aneta until moving to Grand Forks in 1979.
She is survived by daughters, Sylvia Hjelmstad, Thompson, N.D., and Jean (Morris) Krogstad, Reynolds, N.D.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by five brothers; and a sister.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday in Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Silent Hill Cemetery, Aneta.
Bennie Molde
GRAFTON, N.D. -- Bennie Molde, 85, Grafton, died
Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at home.
Bennie M. Molde was born
Nov. 2, 1913, the son of Andrew and Clara (Thompson) Molde, in Bowman, N.D., where he attended school. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Watford City, N.D. He moved to Grafton and worked for Williamson Stock Farm. He married
Mildred Burns on Nov. 17, 1935, in Baker, Mont. They lived in Grafton. He continued to work for Williamson (The Grafton Milk Co.), Gary Demers farm and tended bar at the VFW Club and Bolo Lanes.
He is survived by his wife; children, Dianne (Jerry) Urbauer, Portland, Ore., Bill, Tom (Robin), Jim (Beth), Lisa (Craig) Ferguson and Mary (John) Dusek, all of Grafton, Bonnie (Paul) Strand, Anoka, Minn., Susan (Craig) Conway, Duluth, Bobby (Jan), Grand Junction, Colo., Gail Stenerson, Adams, N.D., Jay (Terri), Little Falls, Minn., Danny (Sheila), Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Marcia (David) Seeba, Oakwood, N.D.; 27 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Adeline Thompson, Petaluma, Calif.
He was preceded in death
by daughters, Janice and Judy French; a grandson; a brother, Lloyd; and a sister, Mabel Blome.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday in St. John Evangelist Catholic Church, Grafton.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service in Henriksen-Kamrowski Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.

Deloris M. Strand
DEVILS LAKE -- Deloris M. Strand, 78, Devils Lake, died
Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Deloris Marie Tollifson was born
March 22, 1920, the daughter of Harry and Amelia (Thompson) Tollifson, Warwick, N.D., where she attended school. She moved to Devils Lake, where she worked at Grandma's Eat Shop. She married
Howard Strand on Nov. 6, 1945, in Devils Lake, where they lived. She worked for the Devils Lake Public Schools in Food Service and the Devils Lake Elks Lodge. Howard Strand died
Dec. 31, 1993.
She is survived by a son, Keith (Nancy), Devils Lake; a daughter, Shaaron (Robert) Allen, Puyallup, Wash.; two grandchildren; five step grandchildren; a sister, Janice Larson, Coeur d Alene, Idaho; and a brother, Leonard, Aberdeen, S.D.
She was preceded in death
by a sister, Marlys Tollifson.
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake.

Melford A. 'Poncho' Nelson
DEVILS LAKE -- Melford A. "Poncho" Nelson, 78, Devils Lake, died
Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Melford A. Nelson was born
Sept. 26, 1919, the son of Theodore and Clara (Peterson) Nelson, in Nekkoma, N.D., where he attended school. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corp. from 1939 to 1947 in Idaho. He served in the U.S. Army from May 5, 1942 to Oct. 29, 1945, during World War II. He moved to Devils Lake, where he worked for Manns Department Store, until retiring. He married
Monica Schwan on Feb. 17, 1947, in Devils Lake.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Rosella (Larry) Young, Oroville, Calif., and Terry Uhlman, Dickinson, Texas; four granddaughters; sisters, Mardith Coulthart, Grafton, N.D. and Charlotte (Harding) Tverberg, Park River, N.D.; and brothers, Robert, Chicago, and John (Charlotte), International Falls, Minn.
He was preceded in death
by a son in infancy; brothers, Charles and Leslie; and sisters, Ethel Chase, Judy Davis; and Myrtle Ann Nelson.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer services, and 9 a.m. to 1: 30 p.m. Wednesday, all in Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake.
