Delmer R. 'Slim' Ferber
NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. -- Delmer R. "Slim" Ferber, 74, New Rockford, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Carrington (N.D.) Health Center.
Delmer Reuben Ferber was born June 25, 1924, the son of Hugo and Tena (Schoon) Ferber, in Corona, S.D., where he attended country school. He worked on the family farm. He joined the U.S. Army in August 1944 and served during World War II. He was discharged in July 1946. He returned to South Dakota and worked for GTA, a grain elevator construction company. He married Alvina Hartman on Jan. 20, 1953, in Aberdeen, S.D. They lived in several towns throughout the upper Midwest. They moved to New Rockford in 1959. He retired from GTA in 1984. Alvina Ferber died Nov. 24, 1997.
He is survived by daughters, Shirley (Jim) Pedley, Homer, Alaska, Diane (Brad) Busack, Redwood Falls, Minn., and Pamela Ferber and Cheryl (Tom) Papatheodore, both of Denver; a grandson; and a sister, Lorraine (Marvin) Gahr, Bella Vista, Ark.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Hubert and Donald.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, New Rockford.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.
Burial: 1: 30 p.m. Thursday, Milbank (S.D.) City Cemetery.
Military rites: Raymond B. Thorn American Legion Post #30, New Rockford.
Marian B. Fleck
BEMIDJI -- Marian B. Fleck, 75, Bemidji, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji.
Marian Bell Propst was born Feb. 15, 1923, the daughter of Robert and Isabell (Taylor) Propst, in Omaha, Neb. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, George and Grace Pugsley. She graduated from high school in Bayard, Neb., in 1941. She worked for Omaha Amour Meat Packing Plant. She joined the Women's Marines in May 1943. She married Lawrence Fleck Sr. on July 10, 1943, in Bayard. They moved to the New Rockford-Sheyenne, N.D., area and farmed on his family's farm. They lived in Fargo from 1955 to 1962, when they moved to Pinewood, Minn., where they farmed until 1973. They moved to Bemidji, where she worked as a saleswomen for several cleaning supply and cosmetic companies such as Watkins, Avon and Shaklee. Lawrence Fleck died Dec. 22, 1986.
She is survived by sons, Lawrence Jr., Becida, Minn., Terry (Cathy), Bemidji, and Garry, Minneapolis; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson; a brother, Robert; and sisters, Floreice and Dorothy.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Thursday, Bethel Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Trinity Free Lutheran-Pony Lake Cemetery, Bemidji.
Military rites: North Country Marine Corps League.
Joseph B. Effhauser
Joseph B. Effhauser, 61, 1604 19th St. N.W., East Grand Forks, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Joseph B. Effhauser was born Jan. 14, 1938, the son of Louis and Rose (Trocha) Effhauser, in Grand Forks. He grew up and attended school in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. He worked as a plumber for his father's business, Valley Plumbing. He married Barbara Sweningson on July 29, 1958, in East Grand Forks. He went to work for Lunseth's Plumbing in 1959. He later worked for Union Local #300. He served in the Army National Guard.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Donnie, Duluth; daughters, Debbie (Randy) Owens, Euclid, Minn., and Lori (James) Bushaw and Kerri Effhauser, both of Grand Forks; three grandchildren; brothers, Louis (Helen) Jr., East Grand Forks and Ron (Sandi), Grand Forks; and sisters, Virg (Bob) Sampson, Mesa, Ariz., Jeanie (Kenny) Sather, Soldotna, Alaska, and Theresa (Richard) Allard, Climax, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Effhauser; brother, Kenneth; and sisters, Lorraine Love, Rose Gschwend and Joannie Gustafson.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Norman Funeral Home, Columbia Road, Grand Forks.

Leonard F. Barta
MINTO, N.D. -- Leonard F. Barta, 79, Minto, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at home.
Leonard F. Barta was born May 4, 1919, the son of George and Mary (Houdek) Barta, in Pisek, N.D. He attended school in the Pisek area. He served in the Army Air Corps from May 1942 to 1945. He married Genevieve Schanilec on June 10, 1946, in Veseleyville, N.D. He farmed in the Forest River/Minto area until retirement. He worked for the U.S. Border Patrol, Grand Forks.
He is survived by his wife; children, Susan (John) Gudajtes and Adrienne (Brad) Narloch, both of Minto, Renae (Alan) Bye, and Greg Barta, both of Grand Forks, Kathy (Bill) Slominski, Valley City, Gary (Terri) Barta, Lisbon, and Vern (Kathy) Barta, East Bethel, Minn; 24 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandsons; brothers, Evarist, Pisek, N.D., and Wences and Alexander, Grafton; and a sister, Clotilda Houser, Woodland, Calif.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy; five brothers; and three sisters.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Minto.

Shirley A. Van Horn
Shirley A. Van Horn, 64, 1714 S. 35th Street, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at home.
Shirley Ann Holland was born Feb. 18, 1934 the daughter of Elmer and Rose (Hulst) Holland, in Roseau, Minn., where she graduated from high school. She graduated from the Bethesda School of Practical Nursing, Crookston, Minn. She worked for the Bethesda Hospital. She married Willard Van Horn on Dec. 13, 1958, in Roseau. They lived in Crookston until moving to Grand Forks in 1982.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Scott, Mount Shasta, Calif.; a daughter, Sandra (Edwin) Stalemo, Fargo; two granddaughters; her mother, Roseau; and a brother, Stanton "Butch," Roseau.
She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Gloria Lisell; and brothers, Douglas, Dale and Reuben.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Amundson Funeral Home.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, and one hour before services, all in the funeral home.
Burial: Fisher Lutheran Cemetery.
Elizabeth 'Betty' F. Midbey
Elizabeth "Betty" F. Midbey, 83, Grand Forks, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in Valley Memorial Home Eldercare, Grand Forks.
Elizabeth Mulcahy was born April 3, 1915, the daughter of Frank and Essie (Loftus) Mulcahy, in Crookston, where she attended school. She lived and worked near Red Lake Falls, Minn., before moving to Grand Forks. She worked for several dry cleaners in Grand Forks, including States Cleaner, Grossman's Dry Cleaning and One Hour Martinizing. She retired in 1987. She married Raymond Midbey on Feb. 9, 1937, in Crookston. He died July 16, 1979.
She is survived by two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James; brothers, William, Michael and Patrick; and sisters, Margaret, Agnes, Katherine, Adeline and Dorothy.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Monday, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks.
Sig Samson
CAVALIER, N.D. -- Sig Samson, 79, Cavalier, N.D., died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Sig Samson was born April 26, 1919, the son of Leo and Freda (Magnuson) Samson, in Akra, N.D. He graduated from high school in Cavalier. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years. He attended Wahpeton State School of Science to become an electrician. He worked as an electrical contractor for several years and also farmed. He worked as an electrician at the Grand Forks Air Force Base and retired after 20 years in 1979. He married Margaret Bjornson on Sept. 6, 1947, in Mountain, N.D. They lived in Grand Forks and moved to Cavalier after his retirement.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Lee (Jan), Hastings, Minn., Terry (Becky), Tulsa, Okla., Carlo (Kim), Horace, N.D., and Curtis (Jan), Cavalier; nine grandchildren; brothers, Norman, Vista, Calif., Alvin, Burlingame, Calif., Laurence, Downey, Calif., and John, Cavalier; and sisters, Olivia Botten, Minneapolis, Marian Hiller, Scotts Valley, Calif., Eleanor Leatherby, Rancho Mirage, Calif., and Francis Diblin, West Covina, Calif.
He was preceded in death by a son, Randy; a brother, Earl; and sisters, Agnes Strauss and Jeanette Samson.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, United Lutheran Church, Cavalier.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier.

Anna Weber
THOMPSON, N.D. -- Anna Weber, 85, Thompson, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Anna M.C. Weber was born Nov. 20, 1912, the daughter of Roman and Julia Etta (Anglesburg) Weber, in Manvel, N.D. She moved with her family to Thompson, where she graduated from high school. She attended Mayville (N.D.) State College, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She taught in rural schools of Grand Forks County and in the North Dakota cities of Reynolds, Thompson, Larimore and Devils Lake. She retired in 1977 after 46 years of teaching.
She is survived by sisters, Catherine Adam, Mildred Leddige, both of Reynolds, and Mary (Vernon) Adams and Dorothy Bohlman, both of Thompson; and brothers, Lawrence (Magdalene) and James (Donna), both of Thompson.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth (Norman) Knipping and Gertrude Cunningham.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Judes Catholic Church, Thompson.
Visitation: 5 to 7: 30 p.m. Monday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the church.
Burial: St. Judes Cemetery, Thompson (Gregory J. Norman, South Washington Street, Grand Forks).
Dorothy Bylin
ADAMS, N.D. -- Dorothy Bylin, 64, Adams, N.D., died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in St. Ansgar's Health Center, Park River, N.D.
Dorothy Anderson was born May 12, 1934, the daughter of Ragner and Geneva (Lotof) Anderson, in Norton Township, Walsh County, N.D., where she attended school. She graduated from Valley City (N.D.) State Teachers College. She taught school in Nash, N.D. She married Jerome Bylin on Jan. 7, 1953. They farmed in Norton Township. Jerome Bylin died June 26, 1992. In the spring of 1993, she moved to Grand Forks, where she worked in the fabric department at Wal-Mart. In 1997, she returned to Adams.
She is survived by sons, Keith, Lowell (Sonja) and Don, all of Adams; a daughter, Karen Bjorg, Fargo; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Chester, Roy and Clifford; and sisters, Lois Falos and June Hajicek.
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Mountain Lutheran Church, Adams.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Tollefson Funeral Home, Park River, and one hour before services in the church.
