Mabel E. Fiemann
CROOKSTON -- Mabel E. Fiemann, 90, Crookston, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Riverview Nursing Home, Crookston.
Mabel Elise Strand was born Aug. 26, 1908, the daughter of Richard and Karoline (Paasche) Strand, in Crookston, where she attended school. She married Fred Fiemann on Nov. 28, 1927, in Euclid, Minn. They lived in Crookston. In 1957 she began working in the dietary department of Bethesda Hospital. Fred Fiemann died July 23, 1957. She retired in the early 1980s.
She is survived by a daughter, Darlene (William) Hovet, Rochester, Minn.; three grandsons; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Vivian Demarais, Crookston, and Betty Strand, Moorhead; and a brother, Richard (Marion), Fergus Falls.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Borghild Madson, Mathea Johnson, Agnes Gramer and Rugnar Strand.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
Oswal Stenson
FINLEY, N.D. -- Oswal Stenson, 89, Finley, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Veterans Hospital, Fargo.
Oswal Stenson was born Oct. 2, 1909, the son of Henry and Anna (Olson) Stenson, in Dawson, Minn., where he attended school. He served during World War II. He returned to Finley, where he farmed the family farm. He retired in 1991.
He is survived by a sister, Louis, Finley; and brothers, Walter (Vivian), Moorhead, and Rudolph (Grace), Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Sharon, N.D.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Finley, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Trinity Cemetery.
Janelle Allen
CARRINGTON, N.D. -- Janelle Allen, 43, Deering, N.D., formerly of Carrington, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at home.
Janelle Briss was born Jan. 24, 1956, the daughter of William and Adeline (Short) Briss, in Kensal, N.D., where she graduated from high school in 1974. She married Dale Kracht. They lived in Carrington and Ellendale, N.D. She married Gary Waswick. She married Vernon Allen on Feb. 14, 1995, in Minot. They lived in Minot and Grandville, N.D.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Deanna Kracht, Carrington, Melissa (Patrick) Hall, Kensal, and Beverly Kracht, at home; a grandson; and brothers, Eugene, Payson, Ariz., Deverne, Fertile, Minn., Gary, Fargo, and Dwight, Circle Pines, Minn.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer; a stepfather, Alfred Jorgenson; sisters, Marlys, Beverly and Adeline; and brothers, Dwaine and William III.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kensal.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Lois M. Klava
Lois M. Klava, 81, 2010 10th Ave. N., died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Altru Hospital.
Lois Mary Murphy was born Dec. 28, 1917, the daughter of Joseph Gerald and Helen Frances (Archer) Murphy, in Manvel, N.D., where she graduated from high school. She attended UND and Mayville (N.D.) State Teachers College. She taught school in Manvel, Grand Forks and East Grand Forks parochial schools from 1956 until her retirement. She married Richard Klava on Nov. 24, 1938, in Grand Forks. He died Nov. 18, 1988.
She is survived by daughters, Rita (William) Doyscher, Lake Benton, Minn., Marion (Donald) Mitchell, Many, La., and Janet (Robert Klatt) Dutcher, Roseau, Minn.; sons, Richard (Deloris), East Grand Forks, and James (Susan) and William (Karen), both of Grand Forks; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Betty Murphy, Seattle.
She was preceded in death by two grandsons; and a brother, Gerald.

Tray Sheldon Hertenstein
Tray Sheldon Hertenstein, infant son of LaDonna Hertenstein and Jonathan Overman, Mekinock, N.D., was born and died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
He is survived by a sister, Elise Nichole Hertenstein; a brother, Ted Vincent Hertenstein Jr., both of St. Mary's, Ohio; and grandparents, Daryl and Betrice Hanson, Grand Forks, Larry and Patricia Weiner, Cavalier, N.D., and Jack and Pat Overman, Durand, Mich.

Stanley Olson
NORTHWOOD, N.D. -- Stanley Olson, 62, Northwood, formerly of Grand Forks, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, in Deaconess Health Center, Northwood.
Stanley Olson was born April 28, 1936, the son of Sam and Marion (Gilbertson) Olson, in Michigan, N.D. He attended school in Mapes, N.D., and Michigan. He worked for the Pillsbury Co., in Grand Forks and for UND as a food service custodian. He married Shirley Granger on June 24, 1989, in Grand Forks. They moved to Northwood on Feb. 1, 1998.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Jason, Grand Forks; a daughter, April, Fargo; brothers, Virgil, Vidor, Texas, Philip (Dorothy), Thompson, N.D., and Kenneth (Janell), Washburn, N.D.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday in Bilden Funeral Home, Northwood.

Maynard R. Laidley
Maynard R. Laidley, 63, 509 Third Ave. NE, East Grand Forks, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at Valley Elder Care Center, Grand Forks.
Maynard R. Laidley was born July 24, 1935, the son of Roy and Sophia (Metheny) Laidley, in Newfolden, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1952. He moved to East Grand Forks, where he worked for Erickson Potato Co. He married Beatrice Helmowski on May 26, 1956, in Milwaukee. He worked 25 years as a boiler operator at Bridgeman Creameries before retiring in 1988. He worked for North Star Inn, Grand Forks, until 1992 and was a custodian for UND.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Troy, Grand Forks; a daughter, Cyndi (Dennis) Gaddie, East Grand Forks; six grandchildren; his mother, Newfolden; sisters, Maxine (LaVerne) Filpula, Thief River Falls, and Beverly Kezar, Minneapolis; and a brother, Duane (Frances), Newfolden.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a sister, Betty Lou Koebernick.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks.

Dora Whalen
KNOX, N.D. -- Dora Whalen, 99, Burnsville, Minn., formerly of Knox, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at a nursing home in Burnsville.
Dora Sarah Andresen was born June 21, 1899, the daughter of Bartel and Emma (Schultz) Andresen, in Alpine, Ill. She married Mike Whalen on April 6, 1920, in Leeds, N.D. She had lived in Knox, York and Wolford, N.D. She cooked at the Knox School. Mike Whalen preceded her in death.
She is survived by sons, Harold (Josie), Long Beach, Calif., Michael (Arlene), Rosemount, Minn., and Tyrone (Judy), Everett, Wash.; 20 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Guzaitis, Berwyn, Ill.; and a brother, Henry (Mildred), Orland Park, Ill.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mercedes Hanson; a son-in-law, Elby Hanson; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; and 14 brothers and sisters.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knox.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service in Anderson Funeral Home, Rugby, N.D., and one hour before services in the church.

Henry A. Dietrich
Henry A. Dietrich, 92, Grand Forks, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, in Altru Hospital.
Henry Dietrich was born Sept. 29, 1906, the son of Henry and Ella (Steinke) Dietrich, in Neche, N.D. He married Minnie Thom on July 9, 1929, in St. Thomas, N.D. They farmed in Pembina County, Hensel, N.D. They farmed in McIntosh, Minn. He later moved to Cedarberg, Wis., where he worked for the Mercury Outboard Motor Co. They moved to Grand Forks in 1977.
He is survived by sons, Duane (Clarice), East Grand Forks, and Bert (Karen), Saukville, Wis.; five grandchildren; sisters, Ella Ganssle, Grafton, N.D., Violet Lesher, Jerome, Idaho, Elaine Renideau, Armida, Calif., Lillian Gebney, Cavalier, N.D., and Barb Vollath, St. Thomas; and brothers, Louie and George, both of Crystal, N.D., Johnny, Cavalier, Leonard, Camarillo, Calif., and Clarence, Cedarberg, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his wife; brothers, Marvin, Charlie and Albert; and a sister, Anna.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Ferdinand J. 'F.J.' Hoverson
MANVEL, N.D. -- Ferdinand J. "F.J." Hoverson, 84, Manvel, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Ferdinand Joseph Hoverson was born May 11, 1914, the son of Richard and Vera (Colosky) Hoverson, in Manvel, where he attended school. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He married Ruth Callahan on April 6, 1942, in Jackson, Miss. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He returned to Manvel. He worked for AGSCO. He owned and operated Hoverson's Grocery in Manvel from 1951 to 1972. He worked at the Grand Forks Air Force Base Commissary until his retirement in 1982. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post 299 of Manvel.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Thomas, Decatur, Texas, Richard, Colfax, N.D., and Tim (Brenda), Detroit Lakes, Minn.; daughters, Rosemary (Kenny) Holweger, Grand Forks, Cathy (Steve) Millemon, Rock Springs, Wyo., Rita Evans, Grapevine, Texas, Jody (Doug), Slominski, Manvel, Maureen (Van) Johnson, Kemmerer, Wyo., Ann (Rodney) Teigen, Oslo, Minn., and Terese (Jim) Miranda, Maricopa, Ariz.; 28 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard, Salem, Ore., and Donald, Grand Forks; and a sister, Verna (Lyle) Lindsay, Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by his brother, William.

Edward LeClerc
OAKWOOD, N.D. -- Edward LeClerc, 81, Oakwood, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Edward LeClerc was born Jan. 14, 1917, the son of Alfred and Amanda (Paquette) LaClerc, in Grafton, N.D. He attended school in Grafton and Winnipeg. He returned to the area. He married Anna Lussier on Nov. 9, 1938, in Manitoba. They lived and farmed on the LeClerc family farm.
He is survived by his wife; children, Richard (Mary), Mankato, Minn., Lucille (Dick) Bonlie, East Grand Forks, Shirley DeMers, Fargo, Dianne LeClerc, Eureka, Calif., Doris Brown, Moorhead, Dennis (Kim) and Brian (Nancy), both of Grafton, and Marian Hapip, Bismarck.; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers; and three sisters.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oakwood.
