Frances F. Gravelin
Frances F. Gravelin, 68, 110 Cherry St., died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Altru Hospital.
Frances Kowalski was born Dec. 4, 1930, the daughter of Julian and Pauline (Lunski) Kowalski, Minto, N.D., where she attended school. She married George Gravelin on Aug. 19, 1947, in Minto. She lived in Grafton, N.D., from 1947 to 1974. George Gravelin died July 29, 1974. She moved to Grand Forks in 1974. She owned and managed the 5th Street Bar, Grafton. She worked in the cafeteria in the Grafton State School and in the housekeeping department at the Rehab Hospital, Grand Forks.
She is survived by a daughter, Ginger Graveline, Gravelin, Iowa; a son, Gilbert, Grafton; four grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Slominski, Ardoch, N.D.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gene; brothers, Ray, Julian and Severn; and a sister, Violet.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks.
Theresa A. Sauer
LANGDON, N.D. -- Theresa A. Sauer, 95, Langdon, formerly of Mount Carmel, N.D., died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Maple Manor Care Center, Langdon.
Theresa Kartes was born April 20, 1903, the daughter of John and Flora Kartes, in Mount Carmel. She attended school in Dresden Township, Cavalier County, N.D. She married Jacob Sauer on Oct. 12, 1920, in Mount Carmel. They lived in St. Cloud, Minn., in the early 1920s. They moved to Mount Carmel. Jacob Sauer died Jan. 6, 1994. She moved to Maple Manor in 1992.
She is survived by son, Bernard, Langdon, Wallace (Annabelle), both of Langdon, Jerome (Ellen), New Brighton, Minn., and Francis (Nancy), Grand Rapids, Minn.; daughters, Marlene (Tom) Miller, Langdon, and Florence (William) Rowley, Grand Forks; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie; a brother, Peter; and a sister, Louise Kartes, Mayme Stella Myer, Clara Sauer, Lizzie Brown and Anna Swinghammer.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday in St. Alphonsus catholic Church, Langdon.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. today in Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, a 7: 30 p.m. prayer services today in the church, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church Cemetery.
Sophia E. Lorenson
BEMIDJI -- Sophia E. Lorenson, 89, Bemidji, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, in Bemidji.
Sophia Elizabeth Bellanger was born April 15, 1909, the daughter of William and Angeline Bellanger in White Earth, Minn. She married George Sargent in 1924 in Naytawaush, Minn. She lived in Naytawaush until 1948, when she moved to Warroad, Minn. She married John Lorenson in 1957, in Warroad. He died in 1964. She moved to Minneapolis in 1965. She moved to Bemidji in 1981.
She is survived by daughters, Donna Lipinski and Jean Smith, both of Minneapolis, Bernadine Graves, Red Lake, Annette Oshie, Bemidji, and Marlyce Yzaguirre, St. Paul; sons, William and Ervin, both of Cass Lake, and Earl Sr., Jerry and Frank, all of Bemidji; 66 grandchildren; 137 great-grandchildren; and 54 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Shaugabay, Warroad; and a brother, Joseph, Mahnomen, Minn.
She was preceded in death by a son, Donald; a brother, Aloysius; and sisters, Violet Beupre and Gladys Ladoux.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Warroad.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Warroad.
Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Warroad.
Doris M. Kubousek
FOREST RIVER, N.D. -- Doris M. Kubousek, 68, Forest River, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in Unity Medical Center, Grafton, N.D.
Doris M. Wylie was born May 10, 1930, the daughter of John and Gladys (Capes) Wylie, in Pisek, N.D., where she attended school. She married William Kubousek on Oct. 17, 1950, in Park River. They farmed in the Forest River area. In 1958, they moved to Forest River. They retired from farming in the late 1970s. They spent winters in Florida.
She is survived by her husband; sons Gary, Homestead, Fla., and William, Forest River; a daughter, Lisa Kubousek Wagner, Forest River; two grandchildren; and sisters, Janice (Cecil) Dunlop, Lake Placid, Fla. and Mabel (Raymond) Fee, Grand Forks.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Forest River Community Church.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Forest River Cemetery.
John Hoffman
MUNICH, N.D. -- John Hoffman, 58, Munich, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital, Langdon, N.D.
John Hoffman was born Oct. 12, 1940, the son of Daniel and Frances (Dick) Hoffman, in Devils Lake. He grew up and attended school in Munich, graduating from high school in 1958. He farmed with his father in Sievert Township, Cavalier County, N.D. He was also in the excavation business and antique business
He is survived by his mother, of Munich; brother, Darol (Jeri), Langdon; and sisters, Darlene (Milton) Unruh, Jamestown, Jane (Gary) Pankratz, Grafton, Shirley (Ronald) Williams, Interlachen, Fla., Jeanette (Lance) Grimm, Roseville, Calif., Janice Nayes, Fort Collins, Colo., and Gail (Scott) Cruse, Devils Lake.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Salem Mennonite Church, Munich.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: South Salem Cemetery.
Dennis Stegman
WALHALLA, N.D. -- Dennis Stegman, 49, Walhalla, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, as a result of an automobile accident.
William Dennis Stegman was born Dec. 31, 1948, the son of Albert and Jean (Gibney) Stegman, in Altona, Man.
He is survived by sons, Scott (Cheryl), Fargo, and Shane and Cory, both of Walhalla; a daughter, Jeanna Stegman, Fargo; a granddaughter; his parents, Walhalla; a sister, Sharon (Ronald) Gratton, Osnabrock, N.D.; and brothers, Ernie, Walhalla; Rodney (Lynell), Grand Forks, Kenny, Fargo, and Tim (Penny), Cavalier.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Walhalla Lutheran Church.
Burial: Walhalla Hillside Cemetery (Nelson, Walhalla).
Mae Hatten
Mae Hatten, 77, East Grand Forks, formerly of Lakota, N.D., died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at home.
Mae Gress was born May 13, 1921, the daughter of Harry and Grace (Gordon) Gress, in Devils Lake, where she attended school. She married Fred Hatten on July 14, 1940, in Devils Lake. They farmed in Warwick, N.D. before moving to a farm east of Lakota. Fred Hatten died in 1950. She moved into Lakota, where she worked for several businesses and operated a janitorial service. She moved to East Grand Forks in 1994.
She is survived by sons, Roy (Lorraine), Cascade, Mont., and Bruce (Shirley), Federal Way, Wash.; a daughter, Susan Hatten, Grand Forks; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Don (Florence) Wallace, Metaline Falls, Wash., and Richard (Marj) Gress, Lynwood, Wash.; and sisters, Beth Johnson, Big Sandy, Mont., Ruth Terry, Malskoff, Texas, Carol (Harold) Kratochvil, Lankin, N.D., and Sharon (Mike) Hill, Leavenworth, Kan.
She was preceded in death by a son, Tom; and a granddaughter.
Services: 11 a.m. today, Lakota Lutheran Church.
Burial: Lakota Cemetery (Aaker, Lakota).
Dorothy M. Lunday
RUGBY, N.D. -- Dorothy M. Lunday, 85, Rugby, formerly of Towner, N.D., died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, in a Rugby hospital.
Dorothy Mae McDonald was born Aug. 10, 1913 the daughter of Fred and Stella (Judy) McDonald, in Towner, where she graduated from school in 1930. She attended nurse's training at Trinity Hospital, Minot. She worked as an industrial nurse at the Owens Illinois glass factory, Oakland, Calif. She served as a nurse in the Navy during World War II. She returned to Towner, where she worked for Dr. O.S. Craise and for the Rugby hospital. She married Lyle Lunday on Sept. 13, 1964, in Towner. They lived near Towner. They spent winters in California. They moved to Heart of America Medical Center, Rugby, in 1991. Lyle Lunday died Nov. 29, 1998. She lived in the Haaland Home until 1995, when she moved to the long term facility in Rugby.
She is survived by a sister, Claribel Thomet, Concord, Calf.; and a sister-in-law, Norine McDonald, Towner.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Glen, Howard and Kenneth.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Presbyterian Church, Towner.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, all in Anderson Funeral Home, Towner.
Burial: Union Cemetery, Towner. Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Church, Towner, or to the charity of donors choice.
Pearl Ashland
HILLSBORO, N.D. -- Pearl Ashland, 89, Hillsboro, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in Hillsboro.
Pearl Mathison was born March 24, 1909, the daughter of Elmer and Caroline Mathison, in Cooperstown, N.D., where she graduated from high school. She attended Mayville (N.D.) State University, graduating with a degree in teaching. She taught school in Zap, N.D. and country schools in Griggs County, N.D.. She married Roy Ashland on Sept. 2, 1939, in Cooperstown. They lived in the Cooperstown area until moving to Hillsboro in 1950. Roy Ashland died in 1996.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Jerrold) Post, Bethesda, Mass.; a son, James (Elena), Fargo; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; and three sisters.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, United Parish Church, Hillsboro.
Visitation: 3 to 6 p.m. today, Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro.
Burial: Westley Cemetery, Cooperstown.
Adeline Pladsen
HATTON, N.D. -- Adeline Pladsen, 87, Hatton, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, in Meritcare Hospital, Mayville, N.D.
Adeline Larson was born June 29, 1911, the daughter of Henry and Hannah Larson, in Northwood, N.D. She married Gilbert Pladsen in Hatton on Nov. 9, 1929. They farmed in Hatton until moving to Finley, N.D.,in 1942. They moved to Minnesota in 1950. They lived in several places in Minnesota and Iowa. In 1969, they moved to Northwood, N.D. Gilbert Pladsen died. She lived with her mother until 1973, when she moved to Tufte Retirement Home, Grand Forks. In 1991 she moved to Tri-County Nursing Home, Hatton.
She is survived by a daughter, Sue (Bruce) Laughlin, Fargo; a son, Paul, Richfield, Minn.; four granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Harris; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Were held in Hatton.
Donald Murdock
CANDO, N.D. -- Donald Murdock, 83, Cando, N.D., died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in Towner County Medical Center, Cando.
Donald F. Murdock was born Feb. 2, 1915, the son of H.J. and Fredericka Amalie (Christianson) Murdock, in Battle Lake, Minn. He attended school in Clitherall, Minn. He moved with his family in 1926 to Rock Lake, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He farmed in Rock Lake until retiring in 1982. He lived in Sturgis, S.D., and Devils Lake, before moving to Cando. He entered Resthaven Healthcare Center, Cando, in July 1988.
He is survived by brothers, George (June), Rock Lake, and Paul (Amy), Harlem, Mont.; and a sister, Rachael, Cando.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Max and Porter.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando.
Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. today, in the funeral home.
Burial: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando.
