James G. Robinson
THOMPSON, N.D. -- James G. Robinson, 75, Thompson, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, in Edinburg, Texas.
James Glen Robinson was born Aug. 29, 1923, the son of Andrew Hage and Julia (Knutson) Robinson, in St. Thomas, N.D., where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Navy Nov. 26, 1943, during World War II, and was disacharged April 8, 1946. He married Helen Heazlett on Nov. 27, 1952, in Fairmount, N.D. They lived in St. Thomas before moving to Thompson in 1955. They lived and farmed in Michigan Township, Grand Forks County.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Jay (Barbara), Thompson; daughters, Jacqueline (Tom) Brockling, Grand Forks, and Rachelle (Larry) Schuster, Edinburg, N.D.; eight grandchildren; brothers, Miller and Marvin (Doris), both of St. Thomas, and Elmer (Margaret), Thompson; and sisters, Ruth Kliniske, Grafton, N.D., Jane (Charles) Willert, Boulder, Colo., and Bunny (Lynn) Bjarnason, Mountain, N.D.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Thompson.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Thompson Cemetery.
Military rites: Thompson American Legion Post.
Joseph F. Coons
BEMIDJI -- Joseph F. Coons, 80, Anoka, Minn., formerly of Bemidji, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, in Osseo (Minn.) Health Care Center.
Joseph Franklin Coons was born June 18, 1918, the son of James and Lena (Schummer) Coons, in Bemidji. He grew up and attended school in Schoolcraft Township, Hubbard County, Minn. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Joyce Miller. After his discharge he returned to Bemidji, where he worked as a logger before working for Doran Plumbing. In the late 1950s he moved to Minneapolis, where he worked in construction. He retired in 1976. He lived in Minneapolis with his son Corey and for the last two years with his daughter Cara.
He is survived by daughters, Cara Meisinger, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Carla (Ronald) Olson, Coon Rapids, Minn., Kim Richards, Webster, Wis., and Kayla (Paul) Gatz, Belle Plaine, Minn.; sons, Dennis, Brooklyn Center, Corey (Sharon), Anoka, and Kevin (Leslie), Loganville, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brothers, Henry, Bemidji, and Vernon, Brookings, Ore.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Harry and Roy "Buddy;" and a sister, Laura Jones.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
Military rites: Harold Baggenstoss VFW Post 1260, Bemidji.
Robert Anton
Robert Anton, 79, West Fargo, formerly of Grand Forks, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, in Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo.
Robert Anton was born March 9, 1919, in Grand Forks. He attended school in Dahlen, N.D. He worked as a farm laborer and truck driver in Oregon and California. He married Margaret Cooper on May 16, 1942, in Crookston. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1942 to January 1946. He returned to North Dakota and farmed in Fordville. He was the International Harvester dealer and an aerial crop sprayer in Fordville. He moved to Grand Forks and managed the Rent or Buy Implement dealerships in Grand Forks, Hillsboro and Fargo. He moved to West Fargo in 1972 and worked for Lindsay Brothers of Minneapolis, selling farm machinery to dealerships. He retired in 1981. They wintered in Texas the past 11 years. He was a charter member of the American Legion of Fordville.
He is survived by his wife.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, First Presbyterian Church, Fordville.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, West Funeral Home, West Fargo, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery, Fordville.
Sylvia M. Thompson
Sylvia M. Thompson, 70, 3311 Chestnut St., died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Altru Hospital.
Sylvia Marie Peterson was born Feb. 2, 1929, the daughter of Amund and Marie (Mathison) Peterson, in Teien Township, Kittson County, Minn. She graduated from high school in Drayton, N.D., in 1947. She married Melvin Thompson on Feb. 19, 1949, in Kittson County. In 1955, they moved to Grand Forks. She worked for MinnDak Growers Seeds for 19 years. Melvin Thompson died Dec. 30, 1998.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Thompson, Denison, Iowa; a son, Greg, Grand Forks; and brothers, Harris, Grand Forks, and Clarence, Ocean Township, N.J.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Ardell Carlson, Beatrice Orsund, Ruby Heazlett and Inez Dahl.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Valley Christian Center, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks.
Burial: Skjeberg Cemetery, Robin, Minn.
Mary E. Gerlach
HILLSBORO, N.D. -- Mary E. Gerlach, 85, Hillsboro, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, in Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home, where she had lived since 1995.
Mary Elizabeth Vaughan was born March 31, 1913, in Highlanding, Minn. She graduated from high school in Crookston and St. John's Hospital School of Nursing, Fargo. She married George J. Gerlach on June 30, 1938, in Fargo. She was a registered nurse and did private duty nursing. In 1953 she worked for St. Ansgar's Hospital, Moorhead. She worked at St. John's Hospital, Fargo, for the past 22 years. She was a supervisor of central service, supervisor of the emergency room, and until her retirement in 1978, director of education. She attended Moorhead State University. She was director of the first Fargo Home Health Aid Program in 1966. She served an internship at M.D. Anderson Rehabilitation Center, Houston, in 1970. George Gerlach died in 1983.
She is survived by children, Albert (Sharon), Fargo, Rosemary Peterson, Lancaster, Calif., Patricia (Frank) Witte, Hillsboro, George Jr. (Carol), Granite Falls, Minn., Gerald "Gerry" (Joyce), Carmel, Ind., and Vaughan, Fargo; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. Mary's Cathedral, Fargo.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.
Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Justin R. Bjornson
MOUNTAIN, N.D. -- Justin R. Bjornson, 19, Mountain, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, in Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, N.D.
Justin R. Bjornson was born May 21, 1979, the son of Marvin and Judynne (Gendreau) Bjornson, in Cavalier. He grew up in Mountain and attended school in Park River and Grafton, N.D.
He is survived by his mother, Mountain; brothers, Michael, Fargo, and Marvin and Dustin, both of Mountain; and grandparents, Milda Bjornson, Walhalla, N.D., and Oscar Gendreau, Langdon, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Vikur Lutheran Church, Mountain.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Thingvalla Lutheran Cemetery, Mountain (Tollefson, Edinburg, N.D.).
Ardith Stenen
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Ardith Stenen, 79, Minneapolis, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, in Augustana Nursing Home, Minneapolis, where she had lived the last few months.
Ardith Lenora Sletten was born Oct. 17, 1919, the daughter of Olaf and Mabel Sletten, in Grygla, Minn. She married Joseph Stenen on July 4, 1939. They lived in Grygla and Grand Forks, until moving to Minneapolis in 1950. They moved to Thief River Falls, where she worked for Norwest Medical Hospital. In 1992 she moved to Minneapolis and Avoca, Minn.
She is survived by children, Judy (Alvin) Sevald, Minneapolis, Arnie (Alice), Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Jane Stenen and Larry, both of Edina, Minn., Vernon (Sue), Burnsville, Minn., Gary (Julie), Savage, Minn., and John (Terry), Avoca; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Florence Maidment, Cudahy, Wis., and Bernice Sistad, Grygla; brothers, Marvin and Howard (Anne Mae) and Wilford (Phyllis), all of Thief River Falls, Bill (Junice), Bethel, Minn., Orvis (Lorraine) and Clarence (Marilyn), both of Plummer, Minn.; and sisters-in-law, Adeline and Iris Sletten, both of Thief River Falls.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ernie; and brothers, Melford, Harvey, Orin and Willard.

Richard D. Anderson
CROOKSTON -- Richard D. Anderson, 86, Crookston, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
Richard D. Anderson was born May 27, 1912, the son of Nels and Ella (Johnson) Anderson, in Crookston. He farmed with his brother in Nesbit Township, Polk County, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army from April 4, 1942 to Jan. 3, 1946. In 1947, he moved to Crookston, where he continued to farm. He retired in 1976.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Orral Anderson, Crookston.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Dora; and brothers, Theodore, Ingvald, Lawrence and Norman.
Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
Military rites: Crookston Veterans Council. (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).
John P. Urseth
John P. Urseth, 86, 813 Lewis Boulevard, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Altru Hospital.
John P. Urseth was born Aug. 17, 1912, the son of Iver and Emma (Benson) Urseth, in Bottineau County, West Hope, N.D. He attended school in Ada, Minn. He moved with his family to Grand Forks, where he continued his education. He married Bertha Dubourt on June 25, 1935, in Grand Forks. He worked for Greenberg Roofing for 40 years. He retired in 1974.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Gordon (Janice), Las Vegas; a daughter, Jackie Wurzbacher, Grand Forks; five grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; four great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Oscar and Arthur.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.

Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks.
Eleanor Tornes
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Eleanor Tornes, 80, Thief River Falls, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Eleanor Amanda Tornes was born Jan. 15, 1918, the daughter of Peter "Ronne" and Agnes Tornes, in Spruce Grove Township, Beltrami County, Minn.. She attended school in Beltrami County and Thief River Falls, graduating in 1936. He attended reacher's training in Thief River Falls, and received her bachelor's degree from Bemidji State College. She did graduate work at St. Cloud University. She taught rural schools in Beltrami County, in Roseau from 1948 to 1956 and in Little Falls from 1956 to 1980. She returned to Thief River Falls in 1980.
She is survived by a brother, Norman, Coal Valley, Ill.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Harold and Palmer; and a sister-in-law, Katie Tornes.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. today, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Ben J. Pokrzywinski
WARSAW, N.D. -- Ben J. Pokrzywinski, 87, Winchester, Ill., formerly of Warsaw, died Nov. 7, 1998, in Illinois Veterans Home, Quincy, Ill., where he had been a resident for the past three years.
Ben J. Pokrzywinski was born Oct. 18, 1911, the son of Frank and Clara (Kapliczny) Pokrzywinski, in Warsaw. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1947. He married Sarah Jane Betts on June 7, 1942, in Louisiana, Mo. She died Jan. 17, 1974. He worked for Hurrelbrink Farms, Merritt, Ill., for 35 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Kelley, Jacksonville, Ill., a son, John J., Florissant, Mo., four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Sophie (Elmer) Altendorf, Minto, N.D.; a brother, Ted (Frances), Grand Forks; and sisters-in-law, Delphene Pokrzywinski, Alvarado, Minn., Helen Pokrzywinski, Crookston, Esther Pokrzywinski, Seattle; and Maxine Pokrzywinski, Chaparral, N.M.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Johanna Wirkus, Susie Pincombe and Isabel Fischer; brothers, Ed, Harry, Mike and Florian; half sisters, Mary Ann Pokrzywinski and Elizabeth Mager; and half brothers, Vincent, John J., and Walter.
Services: Were held in St. Mark's Catholic Church, Winchester.
Burial: Winchester City Cemetery.
Military Rites: Winchester Legion Post 442 and Jacksonville VFW Post 1379. Memorials are suggested to the Illinois School for the Deaf's Needy Children's Fund, Jacksonville.
