Mable Vance
LEEDS, N.D. -- Mable Vance, 78, Leeds, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at home.
Mable Crane was born Feb. 2, 1919, the daughter of Arthur and Mae (Shamback) Crane, in Leeds, where she graduated from high school. She married Cloyd Vance on Oct. 9, 1942. During World War II, they lived in Milwaukee. They farmed for 12 years near Leeds. She worked for Home Cafe and Pat's Fairway, Leeds. She also worked at North Dakota School for the Deaf, Devils Lake, and sorted potatoes in Cando, until retiring. Cloyd Vance died Sept. 14, 1965.
She is survived by a son, Dennis, Leeds; a daughter, Marilyn (Eldon) Paulson, Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren; and sisters, Ruby Stein, Dilworth, Minn., Miriam Anderson, Mukitteo, Wash., and Shirley Metz, Ventura, Calif.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Walter and Ray; and sisters, Helen Tarang and Florence Anderson.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Leeds Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, in Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Leeds Lutheran Cemetery.
Herman R. 'Herb' Klasen
BEMIDJI -- Herman R. "Herb" Klasen, 87, Bemidji, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji.
Herman R. Klasen was born July 28, 1911, the son of Herman and Mary (Helbig) Klasen, in Freeport, Minn. He grew up and attended school in the Puposky, Minn., area. He married Clara Huewe on Nov. 8, 1933, in New Munich, Minn. They lived in Buena Vista, Minn., and then moved to Bemidji. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945. He worked as a logger.
He is survived by sons, LeRoy and Roy (Barbara), both of Bemidji, and Herbert (Pat), Laporte, Minn.; daughters, Darlene (Roland) Bitzer and Lucille (Stuart) Wright, both of Bemidji, and Sandra Kay, Couer D Alene, Idaho; stepchildren, Richard and Jerry Dudley; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brothers, John, Bemidji, Henry and Alfred, both of Montana, and Donald, Arkansas; and sisters, Clara Glass and Gertrude Pound, both of Texas, Pauline Huewe, Laporte, Frances Anderson and Irene Finch, both of Montana, Tracy Snyder, Missouri, and Rose Hoppe, Paynesville, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; a great-grandson; sisters, Martha and Marie; and a brother, Martin.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. Philip's Catholic Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Memorials are suggested to St. Philip's Catholic School or charity of donor's choice.
Allen G. Pedersen
DEVILS LAKE -- Allen G. Pedersen, 72, Devils Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Allen Gordon Pedersen was born Aug. 2, 1926, the son of Gilbert and Andrea (Kviz) Pedersen, in Hampden, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Army in March 1945 and served during World War II. He was discharged in December 1946. He married Marilyn Hursman on Sept. 19, 1948, in Brocket, N.D. They made their home in Minneapolis, where he attended Hampden and Dunwoody Institute. In 1950 they moved to Devils Lake, where he worked as a mechanic for Lake Supply. He built houses and helped people keep their houses in shape. He taught carpentry at Lake Region Junior College, Devils Lake. He was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Linda (Casper) Beck, Cando, N.D., Diane (Peter) Lippert, Janet (Bryan) Hannesson and Wanda (Richard) Kuntz, all of Devils Lake, and Arlene (Dan) Strum, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Meland, Marysville, Wash.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Peder; and sisters, Gerta Pollestad and Ella Harveland.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Peace Lutheran Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.

Ella J. Kjemhus
Ella J. Kjemhus, 79, Grand Forks, formerly of Niagara, N.D., died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Valley Elder Care, Grand Forks.
Ella J. Hoverson was born May 28, 1919, the daughter of Lawrence and Minnie (Everson) Hoverson, in Manvel, N.D. She moved with her family to Gilby, N.D., and later to Elkmount Township, Grand Forks County, Niagara, in 1922. She later lived with her grandparents near Manvel. She attended school in Niagara and Manvel. She married Elmer Kjemhus on Jan. 8, 1948, in Grand Forks. They moved to Niagara and farmed. They retired in 1974. They moved to Grand Forks in 1980. Elmer Kjemhus died Sept. 14, 1995. She became a resident of Valley Elder Care in Oct. 2, 1998.
She is survived by daughters, Delores (Clifton) Crawford and Dianne (Gary) Torrey, both of Grand Forks; sons, Gary and Ronald, both of Grand Forks; sisters, Lois Olsen, Northwood, N.D., Leila Erickson, St. Paul, and Leola Sheesley and Bernice Machovsky, both of Mitchell, S.D.; and brothers, Victor, Strathcona, Minn., and Russell, Niagara, N.D.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Edna Nabben and Arlene Newhouse; and brothers, Arthur, Albert, Chester and Gilbert.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Elk Valley Lutheran Church, McCanna, N.D.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with a 4 p.m. prayer service, Bakke Funeral Home, Larimore, N.D., and one hour before services in the church.

Elizabeth Hoffner
DEVILS LAKE -- Elizabeth Hoffner, 95, Devils Lake, formerly of Esmond, N.D., died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Elizabeth Pfau was born Dec. 2, 1902, the daughter of Nicholas and Magdalena (Bahm) Pfau, in Mandan, N.D. She moved with her family to Selz, N.D., where she attended school. She married George Hoffner on July 27, 1919, in Selz. They lived in Grand Forks before returning to Selz, where they farmed. They purchased their own farmstead in Esmond, N.D., in 1928. They retired in 1952. George Hoffner died April 23, 1984. She moved to Heartland Care Center in April 1995.
She is survived by sons, S.F. "Buckshot," Bismarck, Raymond and Jack, both of Fargo, Edward and Leo, both of Esmond, and Adrian, Devils Lake; daughters, Irene (Einar) Dalstad, Rose (Jake) Schwab and Patricia (Richard) Heisler, all of Devils Lake, Margie (Lyle) Halvorson, Sultan, Wash., and Dorothy (Richard) Toso, Wooden Ville, Wash.; 65 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Agatha Shatz, Velva, N.D.; and a half sister, Genevieve Eberle, Esmond.
She was preceded in death by daughters, Cecilia Allen and Anita Emig; brothers, Peter and Paul; a sister, Clementine Fiest; half brothers, Joe, Mike, Tom and Eugene Pfau; a half sister, Julia Davis; a stepsister, Anne Martian; and a stepbrother, Sebastian Hoffner.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond.
Visitation: 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, with a 4 p.m. prayer service, Aaker, Dunnigan, & Brooks Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and beginning at 6: 30 p.m. Monday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, at the church.

Albert J. DeMaine
Albert J. DeMaine, 89, formerly of Grand Forks, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, in Dignita Hospice Care, Mesa, Ariz.
Albert Joseph DeMaine was born Dec. 11, 1908, the son of George "Pete" and Rebecca (Gagne) DeMaine, in Bathgate, N.D., where he attended school. He married Elsie Jane Lundstrom on Nov. 17, 1948, in Warren, Minn. They farmed in Lakota, N.D. and Grand Forks. After retiring, he worked as a custodian for the Grand Forks Herald and American Legion. Elsie DeMaine died Sept. 26, 1996. He moved to Mesa.
He is survived by a son, Dana, Mesa; a granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Joe, George H., Paul and Slim.; and sisters, Zelia, Clara, Lea, Laura, Ethel and Stella.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Norman Funeral Home, Columbia Road, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Anthony's Cemetery, Bathgate.
Judith S. Johnson
Judith S. Johnson, 74, 615 First Ave S., died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Grand Forks.
Judith Silverine Lee was born Nov. 27, 1923, the daughter of Alfred and Lillie (Blinsmon) Lee, in Newfolden, Minn., where she attended school. She married and lived in several cities in Minnesota and North Dakota. She moved to Grand Forks in 1970, where she worked for Grand Cafe as a waitress, Deaconess Hospital as a housekeeper and Black's Bakery, East Grand Forks.
She is survived by daughters, Linda (Larry) Jenkins and Gwen (Ronald) Molsbarger, both of Grand Forks; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Adeline (Bert) Roppe, Newfolden.
She was preceded in death by a son, Terry; and daughters, Marcie Elaine Johnson and Arlys Rhae Johnson.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Norman Funeral Home, Columbia Road.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: In Newfolden.
Agnes Lorenz
LAWTON, N.D. -- Agnes Lorenz, 89, Lawton, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Devils Lake Good Samaritan Center.
Agnes Helland was born Dec. 7, 1908, the daughter of Sven and Karen (Gjesdal) Helland, in Edmore, N.D. She graduated from high school in Nekoma, N.D., in 1926, and from Concordia College, Moorhead, in 1929. She taught school in the area. She married Ervin Lorenz on Oct. 10, 1937, in Nekoma. They farmed in Lawton. Ervin Lorenz died July 10, 1973. She continued to reside on the family farm.
She is survived by sons, David (Marlyce) and Stewart "Skip", both of Lawton, and Eugene (Joan), Bismarck; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Sverre, Olympia, Wash.; sisters, Gladys (Selmer) Gjesdal, Birch Hills, Sask., and Stella (W.W.) Martin, Huntington Beach, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Knute Evanger, Edmore; and a sister-in-law, Eleanore Helland, Cavalier, N.D.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Olger Andreas; and a sister, Lillian Evanger.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. today, Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, N.D., and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.
Donna Weber
LARIMORE, N.D. -- Donna Weber, 68, Larimore, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Donna Marie Hauge was born Aug. 3, 1930, the daughter of Arnie and Ingaborg Hauge, in Michigan, N.D., where she graduated from high school in June 1948. She married Lawrence Weber on Oct. 15, 1948, in Larimore. They lived and farmed in Niagara and McCanna, N.D., until 1963 when they moved to Larimore. She was a cook for Larimore Legion Cafe. She worked for Western Potato Co., now J.R. Simplot in Grand Forks. She retired in 1994.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Wanda Weber, Grand Forks, Patty Weber, Larimore, and Beth (Bill) Arbegast, Cheyenne, Wyo.; sons, Larry (Deb), Bismarck, Jerry (Susan), Thompson, N.D., and Jim, Grafton, N.D.; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Florence (Jim) Reilly, Missoula, Mont.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Alvin, Osborne and Sidney.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Stephen's Church, Larimore.
Visitation: Noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Brown Funeral Home, Larimore, with a 7 p.m. prayer service in the church, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore.
Lucille Anderson
GRAFTON, N.D. -- Lucille Anderson, 81, Fargo, formerly of Grafton, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, in Elim Nursing Home, Fargo.
Lucille Boehmer was born Oct. 19, 1917, the daughter of H.B. and Christina (McGray) Boehmer, in Newbre Township, Ramsey County, N.D., where she attended school. She married Ervin Anderson on Jan. 30, 1942, in Sturgis, S.D. She moved to the Edmore-Fairdale, N.D., area and farmed. In 1950, she moved to Grafton. Ervin Anderson died Nov. 27, 1968. She continued to live in Grafton until 1993 when she moved to Fargo.
She is survived by daughters, Patricia (Dennis) Scheel, Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Karen (Darrell) Bohn, Phoenix; a son, Curt, Breckenridge, Minn.; six grandchildren; and a brother.
She was preceded in death by a son, David; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Grafton.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Henriksen-Kamrowski Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.
