Delores Flaten

PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Delores Flaten, 72, Las Vegas, formerly of Park River, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, in Summerlin Medical Center, Las Vegas.

Delores Sherek was born July 19, 1926, the daughter of Joseph and Veronica (Swartz) Sherek, in Lankin, N.D., where she attended school. She married Roald "Chuck" Flaten on Feb. 15, 1950, in Crookston. They farmed in the Park River area. In 1980 she moved to Las Vegas. Roald Flaten died Sept. 28, 1984.

She is survived by sons, Brad, New Orleans, La., and Ken, Las Vegas; daughters, Jan (Ed) Zon, Mount Vernon, Wash., Barbara Johnson, Meridian, Idaho, and Pam Leishman, Brigham City, Utah; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Wilfred; and sisters, Leona Bina and Laverne Long.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Park River.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday in Tollefson Funeral Home, Park River, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River.

John Two Hearts

FORT TOTTEN, N.D. -- John Two Hearts, 62, Fort Totten, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

John Two Hearts was born July 28, 1936, the son of Michael and Rachel (Smith) Two Hearts, in Fort Totten. He attended school at St. Michael, N.D., and graduated from high school in Marty, S.D., in 1956. He worked at the Trading Post, Fort Totten. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1973 as a Radioman Second Class. He then returned to Fort Totten. He worked for the Devils Lake Sioux Tribe, Fort Totten Housing Authority and McDonald's Security services at Sioux Manufacturing.

He is survived by his mother, of Fort Totten; sisters, Annie Woods, Carolyn Two Hearts, Patricia Two Hearts, Catherine Two Hearts and Rebecca Two Hearts, all of Fort Totten; brothers, Jerome, Winterhaven, Calif., Michael Jr., Devils Lake, Francis, Poplar, Mont., Ronald, Cannon Ball, N.D., Cletus, Wadena, Minn., Bernard, Sisseton, S.D., and Isaac, Jamestown; a step daughter, Mildred McKay, Fort Totten; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father; two sisters; and three brothers.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten.

Visitation: Begins 5 p.m., with an 8 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Burial: St. Jerome's Catholic Cemetery, Fort Totten (Gilbertson, Devils Lake).

Military rites: VFW Post 6547.

John 'Don' Hebert

CAVALIER, N.D. -- John "Don" Hebert, 74, Killdeer, N.D., formerly of Cavalier, died Jan. 12, 1999, at home.

John Hebert was born Aug. 7, 1924, the son of Merril and Blanche Hebert, in Cavalier. He attended school in McArther and Kathryn, N.D. He lived in Milton, N.D., from 1942 until 1984, when he moved to Killdeer.

He is survived by sisters, Florence (George) Denault, Park River, N.D., Lorraine (William) Joslyn, Victoria, Texas, and Marlene (Richard) Branahan, Buffalo, Wyo.; and brothers, Paul, Larimore, N.D., Charles, Milton, Raymond, Mountain, N.D., and Robert, Fargo.

Services: Were held in St. John's Catholic Church, Killdeer.

Robert Gothberg

Robert Gothberg, 50, 520 Fourth St. N., died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, in Altru Hospital.

Robert Gothberg was born May 9, 1948, the son of Charles and Olga (Anderson) Gothberg, in Grand Forks. He graduated from Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. He married Loretta Braaten on March 17, 1972, in Grand Forks. He worked for A & J Enterprises in Grand Forks from 1979 to 1997.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Angie Gothberg, Grand Forks; a grandchild; and brothers, LeRoy (Carol), Grand Forks, Ronald (Carol), West Fargo, and Vernon (Lois), Emerado, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Raymond and Charles Jr.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Saturday, Amundson Funeral Home.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Burial: Sunnywood Gardens Cemetery.

Oliy Ackerland

PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Oliy Ackerland, 85, Park River, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in St. Ansgar's Health Center, Park River.

Oliy Ackerland was born Feb. 17, 1913, the son of Ole and Nettie (Syverson) Ackerland, in Park River, where he attended school. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from July 23, 1934, to Oct. 4, 1934. He returned to Park River, where he worked as a roguer in potato fields and was employed by the Park River Potato Co. for 25 years.

He is survived by a sister, Ella Hagen, Grafton.

He was preceded in death by three brothers; and two sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Henriksen-Overbye Funeral Home, Park River.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River.

Elton Cummings

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Elton Cummings, 79, Thief River Falls, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.

Elton Clyde Cummings was born Jan. 14, 1920, the son of Clyde and Addie (Avery) Cummings, in Prescott, Ark., where he graduated from high school in 1938. He attended Arkansas State University, Jonesboro. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940, serving during World War II. He married Armene White in 1939, in Prescott. She preceded him in death. He married Evelyn Jorde on May 19, 1942, in Holt, Minn. He was discharged in 1945 and they moved to Thief River Falls. Evelyn Cummings died April 19, 1980. He married Eileen Anderson on Sept. 26, 1988, in Thief River Falls. He worked for the railroad and Northern Motors, Thief River Falls, before working in law enforcement. He served as chief of police in 1954 until 1975. He also worked at the Pennington County Welfare Department from 1975 to 1978 and drove for Dr. Padilla from 1979 to 1990. He was in the National Guard for 24 years.

He is survived by his wife; children; Carolyn (Roger) Ahl, Chaska, Minn., Marcheta "Marky" (Harold) Van de Streek, Perham, Minn., Tom, Edina, Minn., LeAnna "Lonnie" Cummings, Thief River Falls, and Janet (Robert) Lundbohm, Roseau, Minn.; stepdaughters, Sandy (Robert) Niemi, Thief River Falls, and Tanna (Jack) McGarry, Radondo Beach, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Carlton (Carolyn), Sheridan, Ark., and a sister, Arlen Harper, Prescott.

He was preceded in death by a son, Elvis; a grandson; and a brother-in-law, Robert Harper.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.

Ruth C. Brown

BEMIDJI -- Ruth C. Brown, 100, Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Bemidji, died Jan. 14, 1999, in Sacramento.

Ruth C. Smith was born Oct. 13, 1898, the daughter of William and Nellie Smith, in Rolfe, Iowa. She married Earl Wilber in 1919, in Bath, S.D. They moved to Bemidji, where they operated a chicken hatchery. Earl Wilber died in 1938. She worked for J.C. Penney Co. for 27 years and then for Tim's Implement Co. as a bookkeeper. She married Arthur Brown in 1947. They lived in the South Lake Irving area. Art Brown died March 3, 1978. She then moved to Sacramento.

She is survived by daughters, Judith (Neven) Wold and Joanne (Ted) Parks, both of Sacramento; a step daughter, Jean (Don) Schmeckpepper, Bemidji; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, James.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to charity of the donor's choice.

Debra A. Kelm

BEMIDJI -- Debra A. Kelm, 38, Bemidji, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

Debra Ann Van Mill was born Aug. 25, 1960, the daughter of Howard and Margaret (Wilkins) Van Mill, in Bagley, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1978. She worked at Nelson's Eggs and then for Nortech in Bemidji. She married Willard Kelm on Feb. 13, 1982, in Wheaton, Minn. They returned to Bemidji.

She is survived by her husband; children, Travis and Ashley, both of Bemidji; her mother, Bemidji; sisters, Clare Ford, New Castle, Del., Mary Fahrlander, Rothbury, Mich., Linda Branden, Bagley, and Betty Day, Austin, Texas; and brothers, Bob, Bagley, Tom, Shevlin, Minn., Dean, Austin, and Mike, McIntosh, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and one hour before services in the funeral home.

Ruth M. Suman

BEMIDJI -- Ruth M. Suman, 86, formerly of Bemidji, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in Ambassador Good Samaritan Home, New Hope, Minn.

Ruth Marie Petsch was born Oct. 14, 1911, the daughter of Herman and Alvina Petsch, in Steele City, Neb. She married Joseph Suman on June 13, 1938, in Bemidji. They lived in Bemidji. She worked in the family shoe store, Bemidji Bootery. She moved to Worthington, Minn., in 1994.

She is survived by sons, Joseph Jr. (Carol), Golden, Colo., David (Susan), Champlin, Minn., Gerry (Joyce), Arvada, Colo., and Steve, Apple Valley, Minn.; daughters, Jane (Bryce) Potter, Lake Oswego, Ore., and Sally (Gary) Walcott, Bellevue, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Arlo and Waldo; and sisters, Esther, LuLu, and Leona.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, St. Philip's Catholic Church, Bemidji.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Bemidji.

Sister Mary J. Merrick

OSFHANKINSON, N.D. -- Sister Mary J. Merrick, 79, formerly of Grand Forks, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, in St. Francis Convent, Hankinson, N.D.

Sister Mary James Merrick was born Oct. 28, 1918, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Nordick) Merrick, in Kent, Minn. After graduating from high school in Hankinson, she entered the novitiate of the Sister of Saint Francis, in Hankinson, on July 19, 1937. She made her first professional of vows on Aug. 16, 1938. She attended Mount Marty Junior College in Yankton, S.D., and later received a bachelor of science degree from Alverno College, Milwaukee. She received a master's degree from UND. She taught in parochial and public schools in the diocese of Fargo, Hankinson, Pisek, Selz, Rugby, Lidgerwood, Wahpeton, Towner, and Grand Forks, N.D. She spent summers catechizing in rural parishes. She attended the CREDO program of religious studies at Gonzaga University, Spokane, Wash., from 1979 to 1980. She served as liaison for Bishop Driscoll to several diocesan boards and to the Catholic Daughters of American and as resource person to parish councils. She was appointed Assistant Chancellor of the diocese in 1982. She continued in this office with Bishop James Sullivan from 1985 to June 1988.

She is survived by a brother, Paul (Agnes), St. Cloud, Minn.; sisters, Sister Genevieve, Rugby, N.D., and Sister Therese, West Allis, Wis.; and a brother-in-law, Jack Jacklitch, Richville, Minn.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond and Joseph; and a sister, Mercedes Jacklitch.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Francis Convent Chapel, Hankinson.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, and 9 a.m. until services Monday in the convent chapel.

Burial: St. Francis Cemetery (Frank Family, Hankinson).

Jeanette Siudyla

NIAGARA, N.D. -- Jeanette Siudyla, 67, formerly of Niagara, died Sept. 24, 1998, in Mundeline, Ill.

Jeanette Behm was born Nov. 25, 1930, the daughter of William and Alma (Schmidt) Behm, in Niagara. She married Adam Siudyla in 1953 in Chicago.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Pamela (Jerry) Philips; a son, Hank (Pamela); three grandchildren; brothers, Donald, Robert and Bill; and sisters, Marie Bye, Grand Forks, Elaine Gemmill, Edinburg, N.D., Eleanore Broton, Fargo, Irene Haugen, Rapid City, S.D., Eunice Novick, Moline, Ill., Loraine Abbott, Elk River, Minn., Deloras Krogen, San Jose, Calif., Verdell Smith, Grey Eagle, Calif., and Ione Jacobson, Vancouver, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Vernon, Ervin and Virgil.

Services: Were held in Mundeline.

Burial: Ivanhoe Cemetery, Mundeline.
