Joe N. Mitzel
ESMOND, N.D. -- Joe N. Mitzel, 74, Esmond, died
Thursday Oct. 1, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Joe Nick Mitzel was born
Dec. 11, 1923, the son of Joseph and Veronica (Lauinger) Mitzel, in Raub, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Verandrye and Karlsruhe, N.D. He lived with his stepgrandmother for several years and also with his uncle and aunt, Martin and Mary Welk-Mitzel. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Bureau of Public Road Administration Division. He worked for Dakota Transfer and the Soo Line Railroad in Minot. He married
Delores Steifel on June 17, 1946, in Butte, N.D. He worked for area farmers. They moved in 1951 to their farm in Esmond Township, Benson County, N.D., where he farmed until his death.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Joseph, Grand Forks, Roger (Linda), Minot, Glenn (Jan), Dickinson, N.D., and Darrell, Esmond; six grandchildren; half-brothers, Pete Faller, Bismarck, and Frank Faller, Rugby; and a half-sister, Terry Kreideman, Seattle.
He was preceded in death
by a sister, Anna Dokken.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Nelson Funeral Home, Esmond and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.
Burial: Church cemetery.
Millie Hites
BEMIDJI -- Millie Hites, 81, Bemidji, formerly of Guthrie, Minn., died
Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Emily Augusta Sott was born
Sept. 8, 1917, the daughter of Herman and Emilie (Muller) Sott, in Hensel, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Donovan Hites on Dec. 2, 1935, in Hitesville, Iowa. They farmed in North Dakota and Iowa before 1942, when they moved to Helga Township, Hubbard County, Minn. She lived in the Long Lake Loon Lodge Home for the Elderly before moving to the Beltrami Nursing Home seven months ago. Her husband died
Oct. 13, 1993.
She is survived by a daughter, Virginia (Samuel) Willard, Winston-Salem, N.C.; sons, Max (Jean), Bemidji, Gary (Jackie), Guthrie, and Lance (Lavonne), Jamestown; seven grandchildren; and sisters, Theodora "Babe" Neprud, Spokane, Wash., and Magdeline "Dellie" Bjornson, Mountain, N.D.
She was preceded in death
by three brothers; and three sisters.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Guthrie Bible Chapel.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Guthrie Cemetery.
Agnes C. Hengen
BEMIDJI -- Agnes C. Hengen, 90, Bemidji, died
Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at home.
Agnes Clarice Larson was born
Jan. 1, 1908, the daughter of Louis and Julia (Hanson) Larson, in Mentor, Minn., where she attended school. She married
Lee Daley in 1928, in Fargo. During World War II, she worked in the first aid room at Armour Meats in Grand Forks. She married
Lester Hengen in 1954 in Lewiston, Idaho. She worked on the assembly line at Omark Munitions until retiring in the early 1970s. Lester Hengen died
in 1989. She moved to Bemidji in 1991.
She is survived by sons, Stanley (Ann) Daley, Bemidji, and Eugene (Kay) Daley, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Arthur (Dorothy), Glasgow, Mont., and Rodger (Evelyn), Grand Forks; and a sister, Helen Mogensen, Kankakee, Ill.
She was preceded in death
by a grandson; four brothers; and a sister.
Services: 2: 30 p.m. Monday in St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Bemidji and 6 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Mentor.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home.
Burial: Faith Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church or a charity of the donors choice.
Leona E. Johnson
ESMOND, N.D. -- Leona E. Johnson, 78, Esmond, died
Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at home.
Leona Eleanor Johnson was born
Nov. 1, 1920, the daughter of Otto and Hannah Johnson, in Isabel Township, Benson County, N.D., Esmond, where she attended school. She lived and worked on the family farm.
She is survived by brothers, Harold, Devils Lake, and Leonard and Arthur, both of Esmond.
She was preceded in death
by a sister, Lillian Johnson; and brothers, Donald, Albert and Clarence.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Esmond.

Howard H. Kinney
MANVEL, N.D. -- Howard H. Kinney, 89, Manvel, died
Thursday, Dec. 23, 1998, in Tri County Nursing Home, Hatton, N.D.
Howard H. Kinney was born
Oct. 14, 1909, the son of Leo and Leona (Jones) Kinney, in Momence, Ill. He moved with his family to Manvel at the age of seven, where he attended school. He was a farmer.
He is survived by brothers, Robert (Anita), LeRoy (Georgie Mae) and Willard (Lois), all of Manvel; and sisters, Lula Mae (Paul) Bry and Leila Kinney, both of Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death
by brothers, Raymond, Jay and George; and a sister, Edna Ronan.

Gladys M. Bendickson
CROOKSTON -- Gladys M. Bendickson, 84, Crookston, died
Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Gladys M. Brottem was born
June 26, 1914, the daughter of Claus and Marie (Johnson) Brottem, in Milton, N.D. In 1920, she moved with her family to Crookston, where she attended school. She married
Roy Bendickson on Feb. 20, 1938, in Crookston, where they lived. She worked at the Hasty Tasty Cafe and the Scandinavian Products Company. Roy Bendickson died
Jan. 10, 1987.
She is survived by a son, Clinton (Janice), Andover, Minn.; a daughter, Marlys (Dennis) Ricard, Crookston; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Jerrice Bendickson, San Jose, Calif.; and a sister, Sally (Lloyd) Bendickson, Redwood, Calif.
She was preceded in death
by a son, Larry; brothers, John, Walter, Art and Martin; and sisters, Emily Moehn, and Clara Scovey.

Lillian Sorbo
COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Lillian Sorbo, 57, Cooperstown, died
Sunday, January 17, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Lillian May Hagle was born
July 22, 1941, the daughter of Andrew and Helen (Lantis) Hagle, in Valley City, N.D. She grew up and attended school in Cooperstown. She worked at the Windsor Hotel, Cooperstown. In 1968, she bought the Moline Cafe, Cooperstown, which she owned and operated for 27 years. She retired in 1993.
She is survived by sons, Terry, Cooperstown, and Daryl (Pam), Nekoosa, Wis.; daughters, Linda, Rochester, N.Y., and Paula (John) Kayler, Spanish Falls, Utah; six grandchildren; and sisters, Betty (Bill) Jeffrey, East Grand Forks, and Phyllis (David) Rice, Cheyenne, Wyo.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Grace Lutheran Church, Cooperstown.
Visitation: 2 to 7: 30 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and one hour before services in the church.

Margery A. Kelland
LANGDON, N.D. -- Margery A. Kelland, 57, Chaska, Minn., formerly of Langdon, died
of cancer Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in Minnesota Masonic Home Care Center, Bloomington, Minn.
Margery Ann Kelland was born
March 8, 1941, the daughter of Edward and Jenny (Kelland) Franta, in Langdon, where she graduated from high school. She graduated from Cottey College, Nevada, Mo., with a degree in liberal arts. She also received a degree in political science from UND and attended Alfred Adler Institute, Minneapolis, for two years in psychology. She worked at Waconia (Minn.) Ridgeview Hospital before working as a medical transcriptionist at Orthopedic Consultants for 20 years in Waconia.
She is survived by a son, Jonathan (Lara), Minneapolis; a daughter, Kari (Brian) Vassar, Chaska; a brother, Harry (Margo), Libertyville, Ill.; and a sister, Rosemary Peterson, Kirkland, Wash.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Bertas Funeral Home, Chaska.

Elsie A. Hites
BEMIDJI -- Elsie A. Hites, 88, Bemidji, died
Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at home.
Elsie Augusta Walters was born
Nov. 7, 1910, the daughter of August and Bertha (Jonas) Walters, in Marathon County, Wis. She moved to Brokaw, Wis., with her family at the age of 15. She married
Walter Hites in 1963. He died
in 1974. She worked at Mount View Sanitarium in Wisconsin and Markham Hotel and several cafes as a cook in Bemidji. She was a food service worker for Bemidji State University. She retired at age 65.
She is survived by daughters, Phyllis DeClusin, Bemidji, Emily Urmanski, Random Lake, Wis., and Gloria Shankwitz, Bartlesville, Okla.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death
by a daughter, Ruby Johnson; and a sister, Anna Leoffel.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services in the funeral home.

Joyce E. Schneider
Joyce E. Schneider, 83, Grand Forks, died

Joyce Evangeline Brumwell was born
Aug. 28, 1915, the daughter of Milton and Gunhild Brumwell, in Fargo. She attended school in Hatton, N.D. She lived in Erskine, Minn., and Larimore, N.D. She married
Merle Schneider on June 29, 1940, in Larimore. They lived in Larimore before moving to Grand Forks. She worked as a housekeeper for several Grand Forks residents. She worked at Tubby's Cafe and the Red Owl grocery store in Grand Forks. Merle Schneider died
May 19, 1995.
She is survived by sons, Robert and David (Bonnie), both of Grand Forks; daughters, Merlyn (Gary) Stauss, Patty (Randy) Iverson and Sharon (Dan) Luney, all of Grand Forks, and Shirley (Allen "Buck") Enright, East Grand Forks; nine grandchildren; brothers, Charles, Northwood, N.D., Robert, Dutton, Mont., and Donald (Donna), Red Lake Falls, Minn.; and sisters, Alverra "Toots" Olson, Trail, Minn., and Violet Knaack, Red Lake Falls.
She was preceded in death
by brothers, Eugene and Lloyd.

Cy Houska
GRAFTON, N.D. -- Cy Houska, 80, Grafton, died
Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in Unity Medical Center, Grafton.
Cy Houska was born
April 22, 1918, the son of Louis and Antoinette (Barta) Houska, in Prairie Center Township, Walsh County, N.D., where he attended school. He worked on the family farm until he joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to the family farm. He married
Millie Suda on Jan. 18, 1949, in Veseleyville, N.D. They farmed until 1968. He took over Cy's 5: 45 Club in Grafton in December 1969 and moved to Grafton in 1969. He operated the club for 13 years before retiring.
He is survived by his wife; children, Shirley (Larry) Oas and Wayne (Ellen), both of Grand Forks, Debbie (John) Aasand, Mike (Chris), and Mary (Tom ) LaHaise, all of Grafton; eight grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and siblings, Amelia (Stanley) Sobolik, Grand Forks, Valerian and Jim, both of Veseleyville, Frank, Sacramento, Calif., Marion (Arnold) Hanson, Grafton, and Dorothy (Manvel) Monson, Fergus Falls, Minn.
He was preceded in death
by a son, Donnie; a grandson; and brothers, Louis, Joe and Charlie.
