Alvida Nordhougen
LEEDS, N.D. -- Alvida Nordhougen, 97, Leeds, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake, where she had lived since Jan. 2, 1998.
Alvida Johanna Maria Anderson was born May 17, 1901, the daughter of Charles and Marie (Johanson) Anderson, in Leeds, where she graduated from high school in 1919. She graduated from Mayville (N.D.) Normal College and taught in Penn, N.D. She married Orris Nordhougen on Jan. 15, 1923, in Leeds. They lived south of Leeds before moving into Leeds. Orris Nordhougen died Feb. 7, 1994.
She is survived by a son, Curtis (Esther), Moorhead; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Anderson; and brothers, Carl and Leonard.
Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Leeds Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Church Cemetery.
Myrtle Berg
EDINBURG, N.D. -- Myrtle Berg, 88, Edinburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, in St. Ansgar's Health Center, Park River, N.D.
Myrtle Lahd was born June 25, 1910, the daughter of Peter and Nettie (Johnson) Lahd, in Glesheon, Alta. She graduated from Edinburg High School in 1929. She married George Berg on Nov. 22, 1930, in Grafton, N.D. They lived one year in California before returning to Edinburg. George Berg died Feb. 15, 1991.
She is survived by daughters, Bonnie (Daniel) Hayes, Edinburg, Glenda Bjornson, Warren, Mich., and Patty Roche, Fargo; a son, George (Patti), East Grand Forks; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 2: 30 p.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Edinburg.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Tollefson Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Garfield Lutheran Cemetery, Edinburg.
Roy Nelson
HATTON, N.D. -- Roy Nelson, 79, Joplin, Mo., formerly of Hatton, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at home after a short illness.
Roy Arland Nelson was born Aug. 29, 1919, the son of Axel Nelson and Alma Ness, in Hatton, where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He moved in July 1998 to Joplin from Aberdeen, S.D. He was a salesman for many years at DeVries Dairy, Aberdeen, retiring in 1984. He married Ruth Jacobson on July 28, 1997, in DeLamere, N.D.
She survives along with a son, Gary (Lana), Joplin; a daughter, Cathy (Rick) Letherer, Newport, Ore.; three grandchildren; and sisters, Elsie (Elwood) Skarpness, Milnor, N.D., Hattie Blaufuss and Selma (Bob) Streich, both of Grand Forks, Agnes Collins, Bismarck, Helen (Lyle) Krueger, Yakima, Wash., Norma (Bob) Argall, Valders, Wis., and Gladys Jodock, Northwood, N.D.
Services: 10 a.m. today, Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
Burial: At a later date in Hatton.
Eunice M. Amble
ROLETTE, N.D. -- Eunice M. Amble, 88, Rolette, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, in Rolette.
Eunice Mary Clark was born March 13, 1910, the daughter of LaMont and Joy Ann (Van Sickle) Clark, in Courtney, N.D. She graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1929. She married Harold Barber. She married Albin Amble on Feb. 5, 1943, in Rugby, N.D. They lived on the Amble homestead near Rolette. She worked in several restaurants in Rolette.
She is survived by daughters, Joanne (Raymond) Oakland, Rolette, Donna (Roger) Whaley, Gila Bend, Ariz., Lois (Don) Olson, Pendleton, Ore., and Margaret (Harvey) Wittmayer, Overly, N.D.; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald, Seattle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albin; a daughter, Betty Kalk; a great-grandson; and brothers, Joseph and Glen.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Ox Creek Lutheran Church, Rolette.
Visitation: 4: 30 to 9 p.m. today, Niewoehner Funeral Chapel, Rolette.
Burial: Ox Creek Lutheran Cemetery.
Anna S. Bray
CROOKSTON -- Anna S. Bray, 96, Crookston, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
Anna Stasia Swartz was born Aug. 3, 1902, the daughter of James and Anna (Kosobud) Swartz, in Lankin, N.D., where she attended school. She moved to St. Paul, where she worked in the dietary department of Anchor Hospital. She married William Jensen in 1936, in Owatonna, Minn. They moved to Bagley, Minn., where they operated the general store, and then moved to Fertile, Minn., in 1940, and owned and operated the L. B. Hartz store. They later sold the store and moved to Carlton, Minn., returning to Fertile in 1949 to buy the Fertile Super Valu Store. She also cooked at several of the Fertile Restaurants. In 1959, she moved to Crookston, where she cooked at the Bethesda Nursing Home and later at Spot Cafe and Barb's Cafe. She married Aldie Bray on Nov. 28, 1964, in Crookston. He died in the early 1970s. She was a foster grandparent.
She is survived by a daughter, Polly (Jean) Strem, Crookston; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; a step daughter, Mary Joyce (Don) Hogan, Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; and sisters-in-law, Jean Klinger, Grand Forks, and Donna Jensen, Crookston.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Pauline Brunsberg, Evelyn Scholz and Libby Maixner; and brothers, Joseph and Emil James.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Crookston.
Visitation: Noon Friday until time of services, with a 12: 30 p.m. prayer service, in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).
Harold E. Wimpfheimer
Harold E. Wimpfheimer, 94, 313 N. Fourth St., died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at home.
Harold Edgar Wimpfheimer was born June 19, 1904, the son of Karl and Katherine (Rippel) Wimpfheimer, in McArthur, N.D. He grew up and attended school in the Pembina County, N.D., area. He married Helen Mann. They lived near Hensel, N.D., where they farmed. He moved to Grand Forks in 1962. He worked for Valley Contracting from 1962 to 1981.
He is survived by sons, Ronald, William (Jacolyn) and Jerry (Bette), all of Grand Forks; daughters, June Long, Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Janice (Ralph) Marto and Sharon Byzowski, both of Grand Forks; 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Stanley and Clarence, both of Cavalier, N.D.; and sisters, Edna Reopelle and Virginia Wimpfheimer, both of Cavalier, Frances (Ken) Brady, Falcon, Mo., and Irene Willard, Flandreau, S.D.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Lee; two grandchildren; brothers, Charles and Ben; and sisters, Sadie and Gladys.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Amundson Funeral Home.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 5 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services all in the funeral home.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery.
Paul D. Thompson Graywater
ST. MICHAEL, N.D. -- Paul D. Thompson Graywater, 24, St. Michael, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, as a result of an auto accident near St. Michael.
Paul D. Thompson Graywater, Ito Kum KaNah Jen-Stands before Wakantonka, was born Dec. 9, 1973, the son of Richard Graywater and Sheila Thompson, in Devils Lake. He was raised in St. Michael, and attended school in Fort Totten and Mandan, N.D. He received vocational training in Dickinson, N.D. He worked for Spirit Lake Casino and Resort, Devils Lake.
He is survived by his mother, St. Michael; adopted father, Robert Graywater, Fort Totten; brothers, Robert Thompson, Randy Denne Jr. and Freeman White Shield Jr., all of St. Michael, and Richard Graywater Jr., Fort Totten; sisters, Lovella Thompson, Kansas City, Mo., Mary Bowker, Melissa Denne, Doris Thompson, Candace Denne and Anna Longie, all of St. Michael, and Rhonda Graywater, Fort Totten; adopted brother, Jessie Davis, Devils Lake; adopted sister, Bobby Graywater, Minot; grandmothers, Elizabeth Robertson and Gladys Peltier, both of Fort Totten, Lena Denne, St. Michael, and Mary Louise Fassest, Devils Lake; grandfathers, Jim Thompson Sr., Ambrose J. Thompson and Al Cloud, all of St. Michael, and Art Thompson, Joe Brown Sr., and Elmer Brown, all of Tokio, N.D.; and a great-grandfather, Sam Cloud, Fort Totten.
He was preceded in death by his father; grandparents, Mike and Mary Jane Thompson, Alex Graywater Sr., and Teresia Jockson.

Clarence W. Maxwell
DEVILS LAKE -- Clarence W. Maxwell, 98, Devils Lake, formerly of Webster, N.D., died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Clarence William Maxwell was born Aug. 2, 1900, the son of William Lymen and Harriet Rosetta (Rasmussen) Maxwell, Devils Lake. He was raised in Hanboro, N.D., and attended school in St. John, N.D. He attended Hanson Tractor School in Fargo and worked construction. In 1925, he started farming and in 1934, he began working on Robert Collinson's farm. He married Ruth Calhoon on June 4, 1934, in Fargo. In 1944, he bought his own farm in Webster. They retired from farming in 1962. They moved to Devils Lake in 1973. Ruth Maxwell died in 1980.
He is survived by sons, Jerry, Seffner, Fla., and Robert, Brandon, S.D.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Harbal, of Montana.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Delbert and Ellsworth; and a sister, Sarah.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.
Lila Hausmann
DEVILS LAKE -- Lila Hausmann, 92, Devils Lake, formerly of Churchs Ferry, N.D., died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Lila Johnson was born Feb. 2, 1906, the daughter of John and Dorthea (Muller) Johnson, in Penn, N.D. She attended school in Penn and Churchs Ferry. She taught rural area schools. She married Robert Hausmann on July 26, 1930, in Duluth. They made their home on a farm in Churchs Ferry. Robert Hausmann died May 7, 1981. She moved to Devils Lake in 1991.
She is survived by a son, Ronald (Janis), Churchs Ferry; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter; sisters, Alice, Mable, Jenny and Eileen; and brothers, Charles, Harry and Bertrand.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Zion Lutheran Church, Churchs Ferry.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Churchs Ferry Cemetery.
Nicholas Scott Waldo
TOLNA, N.D. -- Nicholas Scott Waldo, 11, Tolna, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Nicholas Scott Waldo was born Feb. 9, 1987, the son of Randal Scott and Melane (Kraft) Waldo, in Devils Lake. He moved with his family to Valley City, N.D. In 1991, the family moved to the family farm near Tolna. He was currently a sixth grader at Dakota Prairie School, McVille, N.D. He was a member of 4-H Roughriders Club and enjoyed basketball, football, riding horse, camping and swimming.
He is survived by his parents; brothers, James Daniel and Dustin Ivan, both at home; his grandfather, Melvin Kraft, New Rockford, N.D.; his grandmother, Kay Waldo, Devils Lake; and great-grandmothers, Clara Waldo, Tolna, and Crystal Enstad, McVille.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Marvin Waldo; and his grandmother, Nellie Kraft.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Dakota Prairie Elementary School Gymnasium.
Visitation: Noon to 7: 30 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

William E. 'Bud' Elleson
CROOKSTON -- William E. "Bud" Elleson, 72, Crookston, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
William E. Elleson was born Oct. 26, 1926, the son of Finn and Carrie (Hogquist) Elleson, in Thief River Falls. He joined the Merchant Marines and became a fireman. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was discharged in August 1947 and returned to the area. He married Donna Hoard on Aug. 8, 1948. They lived in Thief River Falls, working several jobs. They moved to Duluth and worked on ore and grain ships and then moved back to Thief River Falls. On March 15, 1970, he began working at Glenmore Treatment Center, Crookston, as a chemical dependency counselor. He married JoAnn Rice Bakken on Oct. 23, 1973, in Crookston. He became the Supervisor of Treatment at Glenmore and developed several outpatient treatment programs throughout the area. He retired on Oct. 26, 1988.
He is survived by his wife; children, Dan (Jan), San Antonio, Texas, Carol (Paul) Ihle and Bonnie (Gordon) DeLap, both of Thief River Falls, Peggy (Lee) Simmons, Moorhead, James (Elizabeth), Austin, Texas, and Judi (Rick) Brunner, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; step-sons, Dennis (Elaine) Bakken, Fertile, Minn., Mark (Judy) Bakken and John (Bridget) Bakken, both of Appleton, Wis., and Ronald (Eileen) Bakken, Moorhead; 23 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Edna Enright, Sacramento, Calif.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: 1 p.m. Faaberg Cemetery, Rindal, Minn. (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).
