Ludvig O. Svidal
DEVILS LAKE -- Ludvig O. Svidal, 85, Devils Lake, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Ludvig O. Svidal was born Aug. 21, 1913, the son of Karl and Mabel (Larson) Svidal, in Devils Lake, where he graduated from high school in 1931. He worked for the railroad in an oil station and at the Great Northern and Mayer hotels until 1937. He worked for the Devils Lake World Newspaper. He married Isabelle Hagen on Aug. 18, 1940, in Devils Lake. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, they returned to Devils Lake, where he continued to work for the Devils Lake World Newspaper, until retiring in December 1982.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert (Christine), Mount Pleasant, Iowa; a daughter, Nan (Joe) Yager, Devils Lake; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice (J.R.) Wiley, Bristol, Ind., Margaret Ayres, The Sea Ranch, Calif., and Agnes (Joe) Dunn, and Jeanette (David) McPhail, both of Devils Lake; and brothers, Cliff, Chisago City, Minn., and Vernon, Devils Lake.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake.
Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.
Military Rites: Neathery-Simensen Post No. 756 Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars (Gilbertson, Devils Lake).
Lee Soland
BEMIDJI -- Lee Soland, 74, formerly of Bemidji, died Sept. 9, 1998, in Washington state.
Lee Soland was born April 8, 1924, in Bemidji. He served during World War II. He was a self-employed carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian; children, Barbara Waltz and Bonnie Moore, both of Tacoma, Wash., Beverly Tuvey, Vancouver, Wash., Brian, Eatonville, Wash., and Bruce, Puyallup, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Leslie, La Jolla, Calif., and Wallace, Issaquah, Wash.; and sisters, Helen Johnson, La Jolla, and Eileen Kelly, Parkland, Wash.
Services: Were held in Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Lakewood, Wash.
Lylah Lee
Lylah Lee, 91, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, formerly of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, in Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Lylah Adelaide Peterson was born May 28, 1907, in East Grand Forks. She graduated from high school in Grand Forks. She attended Aaker Business College, Grand Forks. She worked for Montgomery Ward and Norby's Department Stores. She married Arthur Lee on Aug. 16, 1931, in Grand Forks. They moved in 1948 to Albert Lea, Minn., where they owned and operated Albert Lea Baking Co. They moved in 1962 to Rochester, where they owned and operated Lee Baking until 1969. She worked in the oral and maxillofacial department at the Mayo Clinic and St. Mary's Hospital. Arthur Lee died Feb. 28, 1983.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol (Lynn) Butterbrodt, Mount Pleasant; a grandchild; sisters, Hazel Nelson, Bemidji, and Jean Frutiger, Tucson, Ariz.; and brothers, Loyd, Anchorage, Alaska, and Albert "Bert," Thief River Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services: 1 p.m. today in Zumbro Lutheran Church.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, East Grand Forks (Vine, Rochester).
Zachary Thomas Karel
WALHALLA, N.D. -- Zachary Thomas Karel, infant son of Thomas and Suzanne (Tesmer) Karel, Walhalla, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
He is survived by his parents; a sister, Shelby Ann Karel, at home; grandparents, Richard and Ann Tesmer, and Jack and Connie Karel, all of Walhalla; and great-grandparents, Herb and Pat Bodensteiner, Muirel "Pidge" Tesmer and Ivy Patterson, all of Walhalla.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, LouAnn Karel.
Services: Were held at Nelson Funeral Home, Walhalla.
Burial: St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Walhalla.
Clara Yanish Hanson
Clara Yanish Hanson, 57, 5386 Fifth Ave. N., died Saturday, Jan 16, 1999, at home.
Clara Yanish was born Feb. 14, 1941, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Ruby) Yanish, in Fisher, Minn. She grew up and attended school in East Grand Forks. She married Fordyce "Punky" Hanson on Dec. 12, 1959, in East Grand Forks. She worked in the grocery business in East Grand Forks, working for Nellie Utzinger, Cliff Clausen and Senger Piggly Wiggly. She drove school bus for the Fisher school. She also worked for Van Raden Properties, Grand Forks.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Wendy (Joseph) Boushey, East Grand Forks, and Cynthia (George) Randall, Cheyenne, Wyo.; sons, Richard (Tammy), Thompson, Robert (Tera), East Grand Forks, and Randall (Toni Hofland), Grand Forks; 11 grandchildren; sisters, Shirley Boushey, Rosie (Wayne) Cayler, and Bernice Nokelby, all of East Grand Forks, and Dorothy (Donald) Boushee, Baudette, Minn.; and brothers, Arthur (Marion), Alvarado, and Leonard (Elsie), Mike (Linda), and Richard (Judith), all of East Grand Forks.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Joseph.

LaVerne D. Askim
LaVerne D. Askim, 49, Grand Forks, formerly of Lankin, N.D., died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at home.
LaVerne D. Askim was born Dec. 17, 1949, the daughter of Clifford and Gwendolyn (Ness) Askim, in Grafton, N.D. She attended school in Lankin and Park River, N.D. She graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in 1967. She attended Aaker's Business College, Grand Forks. She worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. She returned to Grand Forks, where she worked for Robertson Lumber Co. and ProTransport.
She is survived by her mother, Park River; and a sister, Corrine (Curtis) Berg, Park River.
She was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Hoff Lutheran Church, Adams, N.D.

LaVerne D. Askim
LaVerne D. Askim, 49, Grand Forks, formerly of Lankin, N.D., died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at home.
LaVerne D. Askim was born Dec. 17, 1949, the daughter of Clifford and Gwendolyn (Ness) Askim, in Grafton, N.D. She attended school in Lankin and Park River, N.D. Katharina Kern
DEVILS LAKE -- Katharina Kern, 89, Devils Lake, formerly of Cando, N.D., died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake, where she had lived since January 1996.
Katharina Forster was born Oct. 6, 1909, the daughter of Oscar and Bertha Forster, in Berlin, Germany. She attended school in Berlin and east Prussia. She lived in Italy and came to the United States in 1952. She lived in Seattle. She married William Kern on Aug. 24, 1954, in Cando. They lived and farmed in Maza, N.D. William Kern died Sept. 1, 1970. She moved to Cando in 1975.
She is survived by family members in Germany.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando.
Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cando.
Edna Horgan
CAVALIER, N.D. -- Edna Horgan, 73, Cavalier, formerly of Neche, N.D., died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier.
Edna Mae Bechtel was born May 8, 1925, the daughter of Miles and Amelia (Freiheit) Bechtel, in Cavalier, where she attended school. She married Purdy Horgan on May 6, 1942, in Crookston. They lived and farmed in the Neche area. They moved to Cavalier in September 1997.
She is survived by her husband; sons, James (Caroline), Marion, Mich., Michael, Swartz Creek, Mich., and Timothy (Penny), Davidson, Mich.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Cora Kleven, Tucson, Ariz., and Inez Edgington, Watsonville, Calif.; and a brother, Dr. Laverne Bechtel, Aptos, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a sister in infancy; and a brother, Leonard.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Neche United Methodist Church.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, and one hour before services in the church.

Wesley Ratzlaff
LANGDON, N.D. -- Wesley Ratzlaff, 81, Langdon, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Wesley Raymond Ratzlaff was born May 16, 1917, the son of Abram and Anna (Neufeld) Ratzlaff, in Wolf Point, Mont. He moved with his family to Moscow Township, Cavalier County, N.D., where he attended school. He moved to Montana to work. He returned to Moscow Township and began farming. He married Lucille Hamann on Feb. 21, 1944, in South Dakota. He also worked for Work's John Deere Implement of Langdon as a service manager from 1944 to 1954. He entered into a partnership with his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Becky, from 1977 to 1982. Lucille Ratzlaff died Oct. 27, 1986.
He is survived by a son, Mark (Becky), Munich, N.D.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild; brothers, Paul (Phebe), Langdon, and Harold (Gladys), Jackson, Minn.; and sisters, Edna (Ed) Rhoad, Falls Church, Va., Evelyn Canan, Calif., and Doris (Donald) Moser, Seattle.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Pickal.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Langdon.
Visitation: Begins at 2 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Langdon (Brooks, Langdon).
Isaac Stephen Robert Horton
Isaac Stephen Robert Horton, infant son of Melissa Bouvette, Mentor, Minn., and Chad Horton, Fertile, Minn., was born and died Sept. 23, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
He is survived by his parents; a brother, Michael Horton, Mentor; grandparents, Robert and Monica Bouvette, Mentor, and Debra and Steve Kennedy, Fertile, Minn.; great-grandmother, Joan Stallings; and great-great-grandmother, Gladys Kalbakdalen.
Services: 2 p.m. today, Petterson Funeral Home, Red Lake Falls, Minn.
Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery, Red Lake Falls.
Ruth S. Wallin
Ruth S. Wallin, 88, Grand Forks, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, in Valley Memorial Home Eldercare.
Ruth S. Spangrud was born Jan. 8, 1910, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Berg) Spangrud, in Strathcona, Minn. She graduated from high school in Middle River, Minn., and attended nursing college at Crookston. She moved to Greenbush, Minn., and worked as a nurse. She married Louis Wallin on Nov. 30, 1933. In 1941, they moved to Detroit. They moved to Pembina, N.D., in 1950. Louis Wallin died in 1965. She worked in Pembina as a school secretary until 1981. She moved to Grand Forks in 1989.
She is survived by sons, Paul (Julia), Grand Forks, and Gary (Diane), Milnor, N.D.; a daughter, Cleone (Richard) Swanbeg, Mendota Heights, Minn.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Vernon (Phyllis), Broomall, Pa.; and a sister, Hazelle (Donald) Heywood, Bloomington, Minn.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara; brothers, Casper, Paul, Olaf, Edwin and August; and a sister, Alice.
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Willwerscheid & Peters Funeral Home, West St. Paul.
Burial: Acacia Park Cemetery, West St. Paul (Amundson, Grand Forks).
