Mardell Johnson
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Mardell Johnson, 67, Thief River Falls, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Mardell Lorraine Olson was born Aug. 11, 1931, the daughter of George and Elsie (Mickelson) Olson, in Roseau, Minn. She attended school in Salol, Minn., and graduated from high school in Roseau. She married Arnell Johnson in November of 1949, in Roseau. They lived in Minneapolis until moving to La Habra, Calif. They moved to Circle Pines, Minn. in 1956, until 1968 when they moved to Erskine, Minn. In 1970 they moved to Thief River Falls, where they have lived since. She is survived by her husband; daughters, Barbara (Raymond) Housey, and Susan Johnson, both of Thief River Falls, and Kathleen (Allen) Salverson, Erskine; a son, Gregory (Diane), St. Hilaire, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her mother, Elsie Olson, Roseau; a sister, Irene Snow, Roseau; and brothers, Vern, Elk River, Minn., Harley, Roseau, Dale, Shoreview, Minn., Mark and Leland, both of Mesa, Ariz., and Steven, Lakefield, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her father; and brothers, Stanton and Everett.
Services: 10: 30 p.m. Tuesday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 3 to 9 p.m. Monday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, in Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Community Cemetery, St. Hilaire, Minn.
Alvin Holte
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Alvin Holte, 76, Thief River Falls, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Oakland Park Nursing Home, Thief River Falls, where he had resided since Sept. 1, 1998.
Alvin Holte was born June 26, 1922, the son of Peter and Hannah (Rue) Holte, in Eckvoll Township, Marshall County, Minn., where he attended school. He worked for area farmers and lived on the family farm in Veldt Township, Marshall County. He moved to Grygla, Minn., in February 1998.
He is survived by sisters, Myrtle Hanson, Nielsville, Minn., Hilma Hanson, Edina, Minn., and Mabel Spicer, Grand Rapids, Minn.; and a brother, Palmer (Geordes), Grygla.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Holte; and brothers-in-law, Harry Hanson, Norman Hanson, and Stanton Spicer.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Grace Lutheran Church, Grygla.
Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls.
Burial: St. Olaf Cemetery, Valley Township, Marshall County.
Dorothy E. Ponthan
CROOKSTON -- Dorothy E. Ponthan, 96, Crookston, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, in Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston.
Dorothy E. Schuler was born April 8, 1902, the daughter of August and Louisa (Spreir) Schuler, in Crookston, where she graduated from high school in 1920. She worked as a teller for First National Bank in Crookston. She married Theodore Ponthan on Aug. 9, 1930, in Philadelphia. They lived in Utica, Mich. They retired in 1960 and moved to Crookston in 1962. Theodore Ponthan died Dec. 3, 1990.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Chapel, Crookston.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
Dean C. Parrill
DUNSEITH, N.D. -- Dean C. Parrill, 79, Dunseith, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, in a Minot Health Care Center.
Dean Cecil Parrill was born April 17, 1919, the son of Cecil and Laura (Melhus) Parrill, in Thorne, N.D. He attended school in Bottineau. In 1934, she moved with his family to a farm near Mountain, N.D. During World War II, he worked in the Seattle-Tacoma (Wash.) shipyards as a welder. He returned to North Dakota and purchased a truck and did gravel hauling for road construction. He married Mildred Nelson on June 18, 1948, in Rugby, N.D. They made their home in Dunseith, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator on the Rolette (N.D.) County Crew. In 1952, they began farming and ranching in Dunseith.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, LeaRae (Terry) Espe, Bottineau; sons, Clark (Nora) Roseau; and Joel, Dunseith; five grandchildren; a brother, Thurman, Bottineau; half brothers, Donald Cox, Cavalier, N.D., Benjamin Cox, Hensel, N.D., Joseph Cox, Seattle, and Paul Cox, Grand Forks; half sisters, Avis Vivatson, Cavalier, and Shirley Johnson, Edinburg, N.D.; and a stepsister, Hazel Cox, Davenport, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by a half sister, a half brother, two stepbrothers and three stepsisters.
Services: Were held in Dunseith.
Burial: Rendahl Lutheran Cemetery, Dunseith (Nero, Bottineau).
Clariss V. Phelan
MINTO, N.D. -- Clariss V. Phelan, 61, Fargo, formerly of Minto, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at home.
Clariss V. Phelan was born May 4, 1937, in Minto, where she graduated from high school. She moved to Grand Forks and graduated from Aaker's Business College. She worked Butler Machinery Co., before moving to Fargo in 1960, where she worked for the City of Fargo in the auditor's office.
She is survived by her mother, Rodell, Minto; a sister, Janice (Leonard) Wysocki, Minto; and a brother, Jerry Phelan, Devils Lake.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Church of the Holy Spirit, Fargo.
Visitation: 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Patrick's Cemetery, Minto.
Lelanee Lambl
Lelanee Lambl, 48, formerly of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Valley Memorial Home-Eldercare, Grand Forks.
LeLanee Darlene Anna Mozinski was born Nov. 30, 1949, the daughter of Edwin and Lillian (Blawat) Mozinski, in Drayton, N.D. She was raised in Stephen, Minn. and later moved to East Grand Forks. She married Frank Lambl Jr., on July 5, 1969, in East Grand Forks. They lived in East Grand Forks and Grand Forks before moving to Ardoch, N.D., in 1971. She moved to Grafton, N.D., in 1987.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Kevin, Grand Forks, and Patrick, Fargo; daughters, Tracy (Jon) Becker, Devils Lake, and Penny Lambl, Grafton; her mother, Grand Forks; and sisters, Dorrene (Donald) Devos, Grand Forks, and Phyllis (Marty) Vold, Grand Forks.
She was preceded in death by a son, Todd; and her father.
Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, St. John's Catholic Church, Ardoch.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Norman Funeral Home, Columbia Road, Grand Forks.
Burial: St. John's Cemetery.
Belva Thompson
Belva Thompson, 98, Sunshine Terrace, East Grand Forks, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in Valley Eldercare, Grand Forks.
Belva Hanstad was born June 13, 1900, the daughter of Halfdan and Bergita (Grove) Hanstad, in Vineland Township, Polk County, Climax, Minn., where she attended school. She married John Thompson on Jan. 16, 1918, in Crookston. They farmed near Climax and East Grand Forks then Climax and in 1950, they moved and farmed in Erskine, Minn. In 1971, they retired and moved to East Grand Forks. John Thompson died in 1977.
She is survived by sons, Harry (Jane), Nixa, Mo., Reuben (Anna), Atlanta, Mich., and Dennis (Mardie), East Grand Forks; daughters, Marion (Carl) Nielsen, Seattle, and Bernice Johnson, Bloomington, Minn.; a son-in-law, Robert Hutchison, Fertile, N.D.; a daughter-in-law, Gerri Thompson, Grand Forks; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nora Erickson, Williston.
She was preceded in death by daughters, Joyce Hutchison and Donna Thompson; a son, Irvin; two grandchildren; sisters, Clara, Cora and Ragna; and brothers, Hans, Ted, Ole, Halmer, Lawrence and Irvin.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks.

Edith M. Nelson
CROOKSTON -- Edith M. Nelson, 93, Brainerd, Minn., formerly of Crookston, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998.
Edith Mae Slater was born May 21, 1905, the daughter of Fred and Annie (Vanette) Slater, in Crookston. She lived in Grand Forks. In 1991, she moved to Woodland Good Samaritan facility, Brainerd.
She is survived by sons, Ronald, Brainerd, and Norman, Tillamook, Ore.; two daughters-in-law; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; and a daughter, Eleanor.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Woodland Chapel, Brainerd.
Burial: Evergreen Cemetery (Nelson-Doran, Brainerd).
Arnold 'Arnie' Keck
Arnold "Arnie" Keck, 65, formerly of Grand Forks, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in Arbors Rehabilitation Center, Canton, Ohio.
Arnold Keck was born May 19, 1933, in Washburn, N.D., where he attended school. He graduated from Minot State College with a degree in physical education in 1956. He received a certificate in physical therapy from the University of Oregon, UND, and the University of California at Davis. He worked as a physical therapist in Minot, Grand Forks, Dickinson, N.D., and Florence, Ore. He was an assistant professor of physical education at Northern Montana College in Havre from 1963 to 1968. From 1968 to 1973, he was an instructor in the physical therapy department at UND. In 1973, he left UND to pursue graduate work. He was an instructor of anatomy at the University of California, Davis, from 1978 to 1981. He returned to UND in 1981 and was an instructor in the anatomy department. In 1989, he moved to the department of physical therapy and later became an assistant professor in that department until his retirement in December 1996.
He is survived by sisters, Esther Grueneich, Bismarck, and Adeline Davenport, Sweet Home, Ore.; and brothers, Ted, San Marcos, Texas, Ruben, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Albin, Sunsite, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Gil and Bud.
Memorials: Are suggested to Arnold Keck Scholarship Fund, Department of Physical Therapy, UND.
Burial: Bend, Ore.
Victor Gaber
CROOKSTON -- Victor Gaber, 83, Crookston, formerly of Dorothy, Minn., died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Villa St. Vincent, Crookston.
Victor Mark Gaber was born Jan. 2, 1915, the son of Joseph and Anna (Prodahl) Gaber, in Leaf Mountain, Ottertail County, Minn. In 1929, he moved with his parents to Euclid, Minn., and later to Dorothy, Minn. He joined the U.S. Army on March 31, 1942, in Fort Snelling, Minn. He was discharged Oct. 18, 1945, with the rank of technical sergeant. He married Agnes Rode on Aug. 16, 1948, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. They farmed in Dorothy. He worked for American Crystal Sugar Co. in Crookston until retiring in 1977.
He is survived by his wife; children, Shirley Gaber, Euclid, Gloria (Lyle) Cote, Red Lake Falls, Minn., and Joe and Lorna (Carl) Tofsley, both of Crookston; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lonie Dargon, St. Hilaire, Minn.; and brothers, Adam, Edward and Louis, all of Crookston, and Dominic, Pueblo, Colo.
He was preceded in death by a grandson and brothers, George, Joe, Ray and Jack.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Dorothy Catholic Church.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Petterson Funeral Home, Red Lake Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Dorothy Catholic Cemetery.

Margaret A. Olson
Margaret A. Olson, 89, formerly of St. Anne's Guest Home, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, N.D.
Margaret Ann Giersehewski was born Sept. 22, 1909, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Schultz) Giersehewski, in Grand Forks, where she graduated from high school. She married Lawrence "Larry" Olson on Jan. 23, 1936, in Grand Forks. She worked for Woolworths, R.B. Griffiths, Norby's and UND, all of Grand Forks. Larry Olson died Feb. 19, 1995.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Dean) Moen, Richfield, Minn.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert "Bob"; and a sister, Mary (Melvin) Nygard.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks.
