Myrtle P. Reppien

CROOKSTON -- Myrtle P. Reppien, 99, Mankato, Minn., formerly of Crookston, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in Mankato Lutheran Assisted Living and Care Center, where she had lived since 1995.

Myrtle Petra Jacobsen was born Sept. 14, 1899, the daughter of Peder and Caroline (Mortenson) Jacobsen, in Jackson, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1917. She received her teacher's training at the Normal Training Schools in Jackson and Mankato. She taught in Alpha and Ormsby, Minn. She married Charles Reppien on June 26, 1923, in Jackson. They moved to Crookston, where they purchased Crookston Cold Storage. They owned and operated the business until retiring in 1962. Charles Reppien died Jan. 19, 1979.

She is survived by daughters, Joyce (Bill) Reynolds, Crookston, Ardis (Roger) Rovelstad, Largo, Fla., and Olga "Polly" Marshall, Mankato; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant son; a son-in-law, Roland Marshall; and three sisters.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church of Crookston or the Mankato Lutheran Assisted Living and Care Center.

Laura Burchill

HUNTER, N.D. -- Laura Burchill, 85, Arthur, N.D., formerly of Hunter, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, in Good Samaritan Center, Arthur., where she had lived since December 1996.

Laura Christine Richtsmeier was born June 2, 1913, the daughter of Chris and Mabel Richtsmeier, in Geneva, Iowa. She moved with her family to Woods, N.D. In 1920 they moved to Hunter, where she attended school. She married George Burchill on Jan. 3, 1934. They lived and farmed in Hope, N.D. In 1936 they moved to Hunter. They farmed west of Hunter until 1974, when they retired and moved to Lisbon. George Burchill died in 1983. She returned to Hunter in 1994.

She is survived by sons, Laurence (Marleen) and David (Rebecca), both of Hunter; daughters, Alice (Orville) Suhumskie, Lisbon, Ruth (Robert) Farring, Sterling, Va, Marie Burchill, Salem, Ore, Esther (John) Larsen, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Eva (Eugene)Myers, Ryder, N.D.; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; a brother, Carl (Gladys), Hunter; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Richtsmeier, Hunter; and stepsisters, Wilma Hobson, Ellen Schultz, and Mari Ann Peterson, all of Carrington, N.D., and Clairice Payne, Riverdale, N.D.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Walter and Wallace; and a stepbrother, Eugene McDonald.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Monday in Northern Cass Elementary School, Hunter.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. today in Good Samaritan Center, Arthur.

Burial: Hunter Cemetery (Lindsey-Carlson, Page, N.D.).

Alvin Stroh

Alvin Stroh, 81, 2396 27th Ave. S., died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at home.

Alvin Stroh was born April 29, 1917, the son of Fredrick and Rosina (Schnable) Stroh, in Streeter, N.D., where he attended school. He married Raymonde Morgan on Oct. 29, 1939, in Grand Forks. They lived in Berlin, N.D., Bagley, Minn., Oslo, Minn., and Johnstown, N.D. before moving to Grand Forks.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Robert (Nancy), Fargo, Ralph (Susan), Portsmouth, R.I., Gary (Andrea), Vancouver, Wash., and Morgan (Jenifer), Grand Forks; daughters, Rosina Cofield, Portsmouth, Va., Susan (John) Svoboda, Johnstown, and Polly (Michael) LaBar, Red Oak, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Art (Adeline), LaMoure, N.D., Reinhold, Ukiah, Calif., Benjamin (Margaret), Lodi, Calif., Gustav (Mildred), LaConnor, Wash.; and a sister, Esther (Douglas) Gohman, Berlin, N.D.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; brothers, Adam, Ted and Jacob; and sisters, Martha Wendt, Eva Dathe and Ruth Bertch.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Honeyford, N.D.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Church cemetery.

Charles J. Lester

Charles J. Lester, 98, Grand Forks, formerly of Forest River, N.D., died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in Tufte Manor, Grand Forks.

Charles J. Lester was born Feb. 9, 1900, the son of Stephen and Elizabeth (Poole) Lester, in Forest River, where he attended school. He lived and farmed in the Forest River area. He married Laura Doch on June 24, 1950, in Aneta, N.D. They continued to live near Forest River. They retired in 1965. In August 1996 they moved to Grand Forks. He was the caretaker of the Forest River Cemetery. He was a charter member of the Forest River Senior Citizen Club.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Kay (Larry) Nord, Forest River; three grandchildren; a step-grandson; and a sister, Genevieve Gress, Chula Vista, Calif.

He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Marvin; and three sisters.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday in Forest River Community Church.

Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. today, with a 4 p.m. prayer service and a Masonic service will follow, in Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, N.D., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Forest River Cemetery.

Arthur W. Burt

DEVILS LAKE--Arthur W. Burt, 92, Devils Lake, formerly of Southam, N.D., died Friday, Jan. 1., 1999, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.

Arthur W. Burt was born Dec. 4, 1906, the son of Benjamin and Isabell (Nixon) Burt, in Nixon Township, Ramsey County, N.D. He attended school in Southam, N.D. and Devils Lake, graduating from high school in 1925. He attended North Dakota State University, Fargo. He married Vera Snook on Oct. 14, 1928, in Devils Lake. They lived and farmed in Nixon Township. Vera Burt died in November, 1949. He married Doris Peterson on Feb. 23, 1971, in Watertown, S.D. They lived in Devils Lake.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Burdette (Mavis) Burt, Bismarck; daughters, Nanette (John) Anderson, Great Falls, Mont., Sharon (Howard) Anderson, Eugene, Ore., and Lynda (Gerald) Dimmler, Crary, N.D.; a stepdaughter, Judy (David) Ryan, Devils Lake; stepsons, David (Cheryl) Peterson, Bismarck, and Brent Peterson, Aurora, Colo., 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Charlotte Burt, Devils Lake; and sisters, Donabelle Blaufuss, Herlong, Calif.; Vivian Retterath, Valley City, N.D.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary; brothers, Robert and Glenn; a sister, Grace Kunkel; a stepson, Michael Peterson; and a great-grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Devils Lake.

Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, at the church.

Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.

Jack 'Oscar' Olson

GRAND FORKS--Jack "Oscar" Olson, 79, 2101 11th Ave. North, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Oscar John Olson was born Sept. 10, 1919, the son of Oscar and Esther (Moren) Olson, in Whitefish, Mont., graduating from high school in 1937. He attended the University of Montana before serving in the U.S. Army from Sept. 16, 1940, to Sept. 8, 1945. He married Lila Katainen on Sept. 28, 1946, in Minneapolis. He was a sales representative for Sunshine Bisquits for 33 years, later working for Ferguson Brokers, Fargo, for 1 and a half years.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Guy (Sherry), Rochester, Minn., and Brad (Sandy), Maple Grove, Minn., four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Clifford Olson, Albuquerque, N.M.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Augustana Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 5: 30 to 7: 30 p.m., Sunday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service in Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Wadena (Minn.) Cemetery.

Grace M. Herman

MADDOCK, N.D.--Grace M. Herman, 68, Mountain Home, Idaho, formerly of Maddock, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in Mountain Home.

Grace Maryann Herman was born Feb. 6, 1930, the daughter of Iver and Ella (Tovsrud) Jacobson, in Albert Township, Benson County, N.D., where she attended school. She graduated from the Benson County Agricultural and Training School, Maddock, in 1947. She received a Degree in Education from Minot State University, and a Masters Degree from Dickinson (N.D.) State. She taught at the Albert Township School. She married Erhard "Blondie" Haug on June 6, 1952, in Hamberg, N.D. They lived in Maddock. She taught in Flora, Oberon, Maddock and Esmond, N.D. Erhard Haug died Dec. 24, 1966. She moved to Klamath Falls, Ore. She married Robert Herman. They lived in Fairbanks, Ala., where she taught at the Eielson Air Force Base. They later moved to Mountain Home, where she taught at the air base, retiring in 1995.

She is survived by her husband; a grandson; and a brother, Robert, Maddock.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter; DesLee Smith.

Services: Will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Maddock, in the spring (Nelson, Maddock).

Joe N. Mitzel

ESMOND, N.D. -- Joe N. Mitzel, 74, Esmond, died Thursday Oct. 1, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.

Joe Nick Mitzel was born Dec. 11, 1923, the son of Joseph and Veronica (Lauinger) Mitzel, in Raub, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Verandrye and Karlsruhe, N.D. He lived with his stepgrandmother for several years and also with his uncle and aunt, Martin and Mary Welk-Mitzel. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Bureau of Public Road Administration Division. He worked for Dakota Transfer and the Soo Line Railroad in Minot. He married Delores Steifel on June 17, 1946, in Butte, N.D. He worked for area farmers. They moved in 1951 to their farm in Esmond Township, Benson County, N.D., where he farmed until his death.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Joseph, Grand Forks, Roger (Linda), Minot, Glenn (Jan), Dickinson, N.D., and Darrell, Esmond; six grandchildren; half-brothers, Pete Faller, Bismarck, and Frank Faller, Rugby; and a half-sister, Terry Kreideman, Seattle.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Dokken.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Nelson Funeral Home, Esmond and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Burial: Church cemetery.

Millie Hites

BEMIDJI -- Millie Hites, 81, Bemidji, formerly of Guthrie, Minn., died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

Emily Augusta Sott was born Sept. 8, 1917, the daughter of Herman and Emilie (Muller) Sott, in Hensel, N.D., where she attended school. She married Donovan Hites on Dec. 2, 1935, in Hitesville, Iowa. They farmed in North Dakota and Iowa before 1942, when they moved to Helga Township, Hubbard County, Minn. She lived in the Long Lake Loon Lodge Home for the Elderly before moving to the Beltrami Nursing Home seven months ago. Her husband died Oct. 13, 1993.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia (Samuel) Willard, Winston-Salem, N.C.; sons, Max (Jean), Bemidji, Gary (Jackie), Guthrie, and Lance (Lavonne), Jamestown; seven grandchildren; and sisters, Theodora "Babe" Neprud, Spokane, Wash., and Magdeline "Dellie" Bjornson, Mountain, N.D.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; and three sisters.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Guthrie Bible Chapel.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Guthrie Cemetery.

Agnes C. Hengen

BEMIDJI -- Agnes C. Hengen, 90, Bemidji, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at home.

Agnes Clarice Larson was born Jan. 1, 1908, the daughter of Louis and Julia (Hanson) Larson, in Mentor, Minn., where she attended school. She married Lee Daley in 1928, in Fargo. During World War II, she worked in the first aid room at Armour Meats in Grand Forks. She married Lester Hengen in 1954 in Lewiston, Idaho. She worked on the assembly line at Omark Munitions until retiring in the early 1970s. Lester Hengen died in 1989. She moved to Bemidji in 1991.

She is survived by sons, Stanley (Ann) Daley, Bemidji, and Eugene (Kay) Daley, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Arthur (Dorothy), Glasgow, Mont., and Rodger (Evelyn), Grand Forks; and a sister, Helen Mogensen, Kankakee, Ill.

She was preceded in death by a grandson; four brothers; and a sister.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. Monday in St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Bemidji and 6 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Mentor.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home.

Burial: Faith Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church or a charity of the donors choice.

Grace M. Cariveau

Grace M. Cariveau, 59, 2014 Oakwood Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at home.

Grace Marie Gust was born Nov. 26, 1938, the daughter of Frank and Agnes (Kuzel) Gust, in Grand Forks. She grew up and attended school in Tabor, Minn. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1957. She farmed in the Tabor area. She married Bruce Cariveau on Oct. 2, 1971, in Tabor.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Jason (Stacy) Plymouth, Minn.; a granddaughter; and sisters, Anna Straus, East Grand Forks, Hattie (Darrel) Pladson, Grand Forks, and Adelaide (Lloyd) Kasprick, Angus, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a brother, George.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel, S. Washington Street, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks.
