Brian P. Bakke
MANVEL, N.D. -- Brian P. Bakke, 41, Manvel, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, near Manvel.
Brian Paul Bakke was born July 5, 1957, the son of Perry and Kathleen (Ronan) Bakke, in Grand Forks. He attended school in Thompson, N.D., graduating in 1975. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1975 to 1978. He attended UND and later transferred to Devils Lake Community College, where he received an associate degree in law enforcement. He was a member of the Grand Forks Sheriff's Reserve Program prior to April 1996, when he was hired by the Grand Forks County Sheriff's Department.
He is survived by his parents; a son, Todd, Manvel; a daughter, Katie, Denton, Texas; sisters, Laurie, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Linda, Bellevue, Wash.; and a companion, Deborah Knopp, Manvel.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Timothy's Cemetery, Manvel.
Military Rites: Manvel American Legion Post No. 299.
C. Maurice Dunnigan
WALHALLA, N.D. -- C. Maurice Dunnigan, 82, Walhalla, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, in Aneta (N.D.) Parkview Health Center.
C. Maurice Dunnigan was born Jan. 6, 1916, the son of Charles and Mary (Darling) Dunnigan, in Walhalla, where he attended school. He farmed in Walhalla until retiring. He married Audrey Beaudry on Sept. 14, 1940, in Walhalla. She died Oct. 21, 1997.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane (James) Hutchison, Rapid City, S.D.; sons, Robert (Virginia) and John (Sharon), both of Walhalla; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; sisters, Ruth (Robert) Meece, Walhalla, Bonnie (Eugene) Farrell, Larimore, N.D., and Joan Opdahl, Grand Forks; and brothers, Jack (Elaine), Maida, N.D., and Ted (Eileen), Walhalla.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Meece; and a brother, Joseph.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla.
Prayer Service: 7: 30 today, in the church.
Burial: St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery (Nelson, Walhalla).
Emma A. Miller
DEVILS LAKE -- Emma A. Miller, 82, Devils Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Emma A. Berg was born Oct. 16, 1916, the daughter of Carl and Emma (Dahlstrom) Berg, in Starkweather, N.D., where she graduated from high school in 1934. She married Milton Werner on Oct. 8, 1937, in Hampden, N.D. They made their home in Hampden. Milton Werner died June 20, 1977. She married Clarence Miller on Oct. 22, 1976, in Crookston. They lived and farmed in Webster, N.D. In 1985, they moved to Devils Lake. She worked in the laundry department of Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Myrna (Lloyd) Skjervheim, Kirkland, Wash., Sylvia (Donald) Loehr, Starkweather, Linda (Roger) Lauckner, Carrington, N.D., and Roberta (Jack) Mattson, Devils Lake; stepchildren, Ed (Bonnie) Miller, Rose (Dennis) Windjue, and Nick (Sandy) Miller, all of Devils Lake, Allen Miller, Cando, N.D., and Tim Miller, Fargo; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Thelma Loehr, Devils Lake; a brother, Carl, San Pablo, Calif.; and a half sister, Leila Pillow, of California.
She was preceded in death by stepdaughters, Lola Werner and Virginia Miller; a sister, Esther Loehr; and a brother, Elmer.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, United Methodist Church, Starkweather.
Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. today, with a 5 p.m. prayer service, and 9 a.m. to 11: 30 a.m. Monday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.

Shirley Welty
Shirley Welty, 71, East Grand Forks, formerly of Hallock, Minn., died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Northwood, N.D.
Shirley Coney was born May 21, 1927, the daughter of Joe and Faith (Johnson) Coney, in Detroit. She moved with her family to Cuddly, Wis., where she attended school. She married Doe Clyde "Buck" Waldron in 1948. They lived in Hallock. She worked as a food and beverage manager for several Minnesota resorts and country clubs. She moved to East Grand Forks in 1988.
She is survived by sons, Dennis (Joan), Heron Lake, Minn., and Daniel (Karen), Thompson, N.D.; two grandchildren; a brother, Robert Coney, Grand Marsh, Wis.; and sisters, Patsi Hosni, Waterford, Wis., Dora Stanness, Milwaukee, Sharon Alden, Iron Mountain, Mo., and Jane Lobotzke, Wild Rose, Wis.

Roger L. Achen
Roger L. Achen, 76, 537 Rhinehart Dr. S.E., East Grand Forks, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Roger Achen was born Oct. 24, 1922, the son of Charles and Emma (Bates) Achen, in Fergus Falls, Minn. He grew up in Underwood, Minn. He moved to Baudette, Minn., where he graduated from high school. He worked on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He married Marie Born on Nov. 4, 1945, in Crystal, N.D. He owned and operated ABC Cab Company in East Grand Forks. He was a policeman for the City of East Grand Forks from 1957 until retiring in 1978. He worked for local security firms during special events as a security officer.
He is survived by his wife; a son, David (Virginia), Grand Forks; daughters, Sharon (Dennis) Brewer, Elkhart, Ind., Colleen (Russ) Young, Fargo, June (Jack) Brickzin, East Grand Forks, and Lorie (Marvin) Tuchscherer, Fargo; 12 grandchildren; a sisters, Lois Achen, Baudette; and brother, Walter (Josephine) Renton, Wash., Wallace (Lou), Baudette, and James (Lillian), Carson City, Nev.

Evelyn G. Voecks
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Evelyn G. Voecks, 74, Thief River Falls, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Evelyn Gladys Nelson was born Oct. 14, 1924, the daughter of Albert and Anna Nelson, in Strathcona, Minn. She graduated from high school in Greenbush, Minn., in 1942. She married Ervin Voecks in December 1944. They made their home in Middle River, Minn., and later moved to Thief River Falls. Ervin Voecks died in January 1978. She lived in Thief River Falls, where she worked for the public school system, JCPenny Co., and recently Digi-Key Corp.
She is survived by sons, Allen, Brainerd, Minn., Kevin, St. Peter, Minn., and Loren (Mary), Terry (Cheryl) and Brian (Colette), both of Thief River Falls; daughters, Karen Voecks, Bismarck, and Lorri (Dave) Johnson, Warroad, Minn.; nine grandchildren; a brother, Harry, Strathcona; and sisters, Mildred (James) Carriere, Middle River, and Irene (Willard) Clow, Albuquerque.
She was preceded in death by a son, Daryl; and a son in infancy.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Ellen E. Braman
BEMIDJI -- Ellen E. Braman, 59, Bemidji, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Ellen Eileen Smith was born Jan. 25, 1939, the daughter of Harvey and Agnes (Cross) Smith, in Bemidji. She attended school in Puposky, Minn., where she lived until 1955. She married Kenneth Braman on Dec. 22, 1955, in Bemidji, where they had lived since. Kenneth Braman died Sept. 20, 1986.
She is survived by daughters, Sandra (Steve) Johnson, Sharon (Mike Murphy) Braman, and Debra Pierce, all of Bemidji; brothers, Charles and Vernon, both of Puposky; and sisters, Marie Gaarsland, Willmar, Minn., and Edna (Art) Hovde, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Kenneth; and sisters, Roberta and Evelyn.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, in Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
Nellie Borchardt
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Nellie Borchardt, 81, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Nellie Margaret Arnevick was born Sept. 9, 1916, the daughter of Andrew and Olga (Nelson) Arnevick, in Holt, Minn., where she attended school. She worked in several jobs around Northwest Minnesota. She married Axel Bloom in 1936. He preceded her in death. She married Fred "Fritz" Borchardt on Dec. 13, 1952. She worked in housekeeping at Oakland Park Nursing Home. Fred Borchardt died in June of 1970. She lived in Thief River Falls.
She is survived by a daughter, Ardell (Harold) Warner, Duluth; three grandchildren; and a sister, Gina Rux, Thief River Falls.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John; and a sister, Alma Staskivige.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 9 a.m. until time of services in the funeral home.
Burial: Holt cemetery.
Helen E. Zuelow
BEMIDJI -- Helen E. Zuelow, 82, Bemidji, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Helen Elizabeth Dodge was born April 22, 1916, the daughter of William and Anna (Aaberg) Dodge, in Bemidji, where she graduated from high school in 1934. She worked at the Irish Grocery store for several years. She married Edmund Zuelow on Feb. 18, 1939. She lived in Arizona, returning to Bemidji in 1950. She worked at Markham Hotel in the 1960s and '70s. Edmund Zuelow died Aug. 17, 1985.
She is survived by a son, James, Pearce-Sunsites, Ariz.; two grandchildren; a brother, Ervin, Poland, Ind., and a sister, E. Leona Morton, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, First Lutheran Church, Bemidji.

John J. Postier
HOOPLE, N.D. -- John J. Postier, 80, Hoople, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in St. Ansgar's Health Center, Park River, N.D.
John J. Postier was born Feb. 15, 1918, the son of George and Betty (Jansen) Postier, in Jansen, Sask. He grew up and attended school in Clearbrook, Minn. He then drove semi trucks. He married Maxine Legg on Dec. 16, 1945. They lived in Park River, Homestead, Fla., St. Thomas, N.D., and in 1955 they moved to Hoople. He drove mail from 1968 until retiring in 1994. Maxine Postier died June 6, 1994.
He is survived by daughters, Elaine (Richard) Thompson, Grafton, N.D., Gail Melland, Drayton, N.D., and Betty (Russell) Crowder, Hoople; a son, Dean (Valerie), Fort Smith, Ark.; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Graydon (Sophie), Clearbrook, Minn.; and a sister, Amy (Robert) McQuillan, Turtle Lake, Wis.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Maxwell; and a sister, Erna Staples.

George F. Hayes
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- George F. Hayes, 83, Thief River Falls, died Wednesday Sept. 2, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
George Franklin Hayes was born Feb. 19, 1915, the son of John and Julia (Shaw) Hayes, in Doyon, N.D. He moved with his family to Warren, Minn., where he attended school. He married Clairebel Doris Erickson on Sept. 6, 1935, in Northhome, Minn. They lived in Big Falls, Minn., from 1935 to 1944, when they moved to Thief River Falls. He worked at Eddy's Bread Co., Kiewel's Bottling and in trucking for more than 50 years. He retired in 1990.
He is survived by his wife; a son, James, Thief River Falls; a daughter, Cleo Busbee, Huntington Beach, Calif.; three granddaughters; and a brother, Eugene "Gene" (Madge) Percy, Big Falls, Minn.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Gerken and Blanche Rose; and brothers, Edward and Ambrose.
Services: 2: 30 p.m. Tuesday, Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Thelma E. Johnson
BEMIDJI -- Thelma E. Johnson, 89, Bemidji, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at home.
Thelma Edith Thorsen was born June 18, 1909, the daughter of Thom and Jandine (Johnson) Thorsen, in Winnebago, Iowa. She moved to Bemidji, where she graduated from high school. She returned to Iowa. She married Daniel Johnson on June 4, 1937, in Iowa. They moved to Bemidji and later to Thompson, Iowa. They lived in Lignite, N.D., for 13 years before returning to Bemidji in 1953. She was the co owner of Sally's Yarn Shop in the late 1950s. Daniel Johnson died in 1964. During the 1970s to the 1990s, she owned and operated Great River Knit Shop.
She is survived by daughters, Janice Kay Rein, Waite Park, Minn., and Ann (Bruce) Piersol, Red Lake Falls, Minn.; sons, Donald (Marjorie), and Keith (Julie), both of Bemidji, and Steven (Christine), Becida, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janice (Bert) Johnson, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Oscar and Albert.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, in Becida (Minn.) Community Church.
