Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, in Sabin, Minn.
Marnie Frieda Deede was born
April 24, 1911, the daughter of John and Margaret Deede, in Anamoose, N.D. She worked in a hotel in Valley City, N.D., and later as a housekeeper in Oberon, N.D. She married
Ole Peterson in 1936 in Woodworth, N.D. They lived in Woodworth until moving to Leeds. They later moved to a farm in Flora, N.D. In 1954, they moved to Minnewaukan, where she worked. Ole Peterson died
July 15, 1970. She married
Chester Volden in 1978, in Minnewaukan. He died
Oct. 18, 1993. She continued to live in Minnewaukan.
She is survived by sons, Roger (Pat) Peterson, Baltimore, Curtis (Lee), Copperas Cove, Texas, and Larry Peterson, Eugene, Ore.; daughters, Sharon (Jim) Moylan, Baltimore, Marlys (George) May, Valley City, and Shirley (Larry) Wettstein, Sabin; 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert, Woodworth; and a sister, Edna Carter, Woodworth.
She was preceded in death
by a son, Harold; an infant son; a sister, Luella Deede; and brothers, Harold, Lawrence, Raymond and George.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. today, St. Peter Lutheran Church, Minnewaukan.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Minnewaukan Cemetery

Thomas S. Heisler
RUGBY, N.D. -- Thomas S. Heisler, 78, Rugby, formerly of Esmond, N.D., died
Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in Heart Of America Medical Center, Rugby.
Thomas S. Heisler was born
March 11, 1920, the son of Steve and Mary Eva (Hager) Heisler, in Rosedale Township, Pierce County, N.D., where he attended school. He married
Inez Duffey on Nov. 10, 1941, in Esmond. They farmed near Esmond until moving to Everett, Wash., in November 1951, where he worked for 29 years in Mill B of the Weyerhaeuser Co. They returned to Esmond in 1988 and moved to Rugby in 1993.
He is survived by his wife; brothers, Frank (Elizabeth), Devils Lake, and Norman (Donna), Minnewaukan, N.D.; and sisters, Maryann (Jim) Schneider, Bismarck, and Rose Ann Heisler, Wahpeton, N.D.
He was preceded in death
by brothers, Leo, Edward and William.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond.
Visitation: 5 to 9 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, in the church.
Burial: St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery

Tony J. Kuntz
DEVILS LAKE -- Tony J. Kuntz, 85, Devils Lake, died
Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at home.
Tony Joseph Kuntz was born
Aug. 18, 1913, the son of Urban and Mary (Kurtz) Kuntz. He served during World War II. He worked for Gamble-Robertson Co., for 30 years. He retired in the Devils Lake area.
He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Kuntz, Sunnyvale, Calif.; a son, Jerry (Annette) Kuntz, Spokane, Wash.; two grandchildren; brothers, Albert, Maddock, N.D., Balzer, Burbank, Calif.; sisters, Kathryn Walker, Maddock, Sister Marriam Kuntz, Bismarck, and Steph Ryan, Harvey, N.D.; and a companion, Neil Nixon, Devils Lake.

Madison Paige Johnson
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Madison Paige Johnson, 19-month-old daughter of Erick Johnson and Jessica Grorud, Thief River Falls, died
Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in Fairview University Hospital, Minneapolis, after a liver transplant with donation from her mother followed by a second transplant which was flown in.
Madison Paige Johnson was born
Feb. 16, 1997, the daughter of Erick Johnson and Jessica Grorud, in Thief River Falls, where she was currently living.
She is survived by her parents; grandparents, Curtis and Debra Grorud, and Dudley and Cheri Johnson, all of Thief River Falls; great-grandparents, Betty Jean Nolby, Champlin, Minn., LaVonne Johnson, Karlstad, Minn., Clifford Fjeld Sr., Fosston, Minn., and Sara Grorud, Mahnomen, Minn.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Katherine DeWitt
BEMIDJI -- Katherine DeWitt, 92, Bemidji, died
Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Katherine Gaubatz was born
Aug. 28, 1906, the daughter of George and Eva (Schwartz) Gaubatz, in Mansfield, Ohio. She lived and attended school in Nary, Minn. She married
Frank DeWitt on July 15, 1923, in Cass County, Minn. They lived in Cass Lake, Minn., Michigan, N.D., Montana and Kansas. They returned to Cass Lake in 1959, and later she moved to Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji. Frank DeWitt preceded her in death.
She is survived by daughters, Esther (David) Neighbors, Hutchinson, Kan., Elverna (Robert) Dawson, North Wales, Pa., Barbara (Elmer) Hinkemeyer, Cass Lake, and Leila (Larry) Smith, Sterling, Colo.; sons, Harold, Philadelphia, Donald (Lavene), Little River, Kan., Vernon (Jeanette), Audubon, Iowa, and Lewis (Dennie), Great Bend, Kan.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by sons, Arthur and Leslie; a daughter, Lucy; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Cass Lake.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Pine Grove Cemetery, Cass Lake (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Anna Estad
Anna Estad, 87, Hoople, N.D., died
Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at home.
Anna Brubakken was born
June 10, 1911, the daughter of Ole and Margit (Moen) Brubakken, in Hoople, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Louis Estad on Dec. 28, 1944, in Hoople. They farmed near Hoople until retirement. In 1982, they moved into Hoople. Louis Estad died
Oct. 4, 1992.
She is survived by a daughter, Patty Hanson, Hoople; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Melvin Brubakken, Hoople; and sisters, Olga Fedje, Cheyenne, Wyo., Gladys (Norman) Bjorneby, Hoople, and Minnie Horgan, Park River, N.D.
She was preceded in death
by an infant great-grandson; brothers, Tom, Ole, Henry and an infant brother; and a sister, Bessie Midgarden.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, First Lutheran Church, Hoople.

Hans Lotof
ADAMS, N.D. -- Hans Lotof, 90, formerly of Adams, died
Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, in Osnabrock (N.D.) Good Samaritan Center.
Hans Juel Lotof was born
May 4, 1908, the son of Christian and Christine (Ronai) Lotof, in Adams, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married
Shirley Watters on Aug. 23, 1945, in Seattle. He worked in the meatpacking industry in Spokane, Wash., and Seattle. They retired to Northern California. Shirley Lotof died
Jan. 17, 1992. He moved to Grand Forks in 1994, and resided in area nursing homes since.
He is survived by a sister, Gladys Boman, Lakota, N.D.
He was preceded in death
by brothers, August, Henry, Melford, Clarence and Ingvald; and sisters, Geneva and Hazel.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Thursday, Aaker Funeral Chapel, Lakota.
Visitation: 3 to 9 p.m. today and one hour before services in the chapel.
Burial: Sarepta Cemetery, Adams.
Marcella Hoffman
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Marcella Hoffman, 75, Thief River Falls, died
Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, in her daughter's home in Thief River Falls.
Marcella Adeline Lowe was born
on May 10, 1923, the daughter of Harry and Sophie (Torkelson) Lowe, in McMinnville, Ore. She moved with her family to Minnesota. After her parents' deaths, she went to live with her Aunt Pauline in Minot, where she attended school. At the age of 15, she went to Thief River Falls to work. She lived with her grandparents, Ole and Mathea Torkelson. She worked for Dr. and Mrs. Halbert, the Soo Cafe and later the Hartz Bakery. She married
George Norman Hoffman in 1947, in Newfolden, Minn. In 1950, they moved to California to work. George Hoffman died
Aug. 19, 1953. She returned to Thief River Falls. She married
John Hoffman in 1957 in Excel Township, where they lived and farmed. In 1996, she moved into Thief River Falls, where she lived with her daughter, Paulette.
She is survived by daughters, Paulette (David) Odette, Thief River Falls, and Judy (Tim) Otto, Roseau, Minn.; sons, Dennis, Janesville, Wis., Richard, Minneapolis, and Jerry, Thief River Falls; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Philip (Leola) Lowe, Worthington, Minn.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, St. Bernard' s Catholic Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Bernard's Cemetery.
Margaret H. Galloway
BEMIDJI -- Margaret H. Galloway, 82, Bemidji, died
Sept. 11, 1998, at home.
Margaret Helen Galloway was born
June 18, 1916, the daughter of Andrew and Margaret Jane (Forrester) Galloway, in Dickinson, N.D. She attended school in Dickinson and Bemidji. She graduated from high school in Bemidji in 1933. She received her bachelor's degree in English from Bemidji State College and her master's degree in English from Bemidji State University. She retired from Bemidji High School in 1979 after teaching English for 42 years.
She is survived by her sister, Ethel Mae (George) Lewandowski, Chicago; and a sister-in-law, Jacqueline Galloway, Tracy, Calif.
She was preceded in death
by brothers, Norman, Kenneth, and John.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, First Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, Bemidji Education Association Scholarship Fund or Partners for Excellence at Bemidji State University. (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Magna K. Brown
DEVILS LAKE -- Magna K. Brown, 89, Devils Lake, formerly of Crary, N.D., died
Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at home.
Magna Kolfina Viken was born
March 2, 1909, the daughter of Martin and Alma (Theasdatter) Viken, in Ytre Rendal, Osterdalen, Norway. She moved with her family to America in 1913. They later returned to Norway, where she attended two years of school. She moved to Crary, N.D., with her brothers, where they were raised by their grandmother after their mother died. She attended school in Crary. She worked for farm families in the Crary and Warwick, N.D. areas. She married
David Brown on Sept. 25, 1937, in Devils Lake. They lived and farmed near Crary. David Brown died
Sept. 21, 1991. She moved to Devils Lake in 1992.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Vida Viken, John Day, Ore.
She was preceded in death
by brothers, Harold "Mike," John and Martin.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, First United Methodist Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with an 8 p.m. prayer services, and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday in Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.
Ethel M. Swanson
DEVILS LAKE -- Ethel M. Swanson, 90, Devils Lake, died
Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Ethel Marie Charboneau was born
June 23, 1908, the daughter of Arthur and Iva (Lawton) Charboneau, in Rolette, N.D. She grew up and attended schools in the upper Midwest of the United States. She married
Rudolph Swanson in Pilliger, Minn. They moved in 1934 to the Devils Lake area, where they farmed and owned and operated Swanson's Mobil Gas Station. Rudolph Swanson died
in 1981. She moved into Devils Lake in 1992.
She is survived by a son, Leo (Ruth), Devils Lake; daughters, Leona (Don) Schell, Penn, N.D., and Viola Dionne, Devils Lake; eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill, Plymouth, Minn.; and sisters, Elsie Ackerman, Devils Lake, Edna Gilbraith, Kirkland, Wash., and Blanche Monteith, Redmond, Wash.
She was preceded in death
by brothers, Clarence and Castle.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, Devils Lake.
