Ernest Ellingson was born
Aug. 14, 1934, the son of Willie and Edith (Hanson) Ellingson, in Grand Forks. He attended school in Bentru Township, Grand Forks County. He graduated from Northwest School of Agriculture, Crookston. He joined the U.S. Army from April 7, 1958, to March 21, 1960. He worked for Lebacken Trucking until joining the Grand Forks Fire Department in January 1965. He retired Aug. 31, 1996. He worked for McDonald Brothers Farms, East Grand Forks. He married
Jean Fischer Newland on March 28, 1987.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Darwin (Michelle), Grand Forks; stepchildren, Debbie (George) McDonald and William Newland, East Grand Forks, Jerry (Sherry) Tupa, Champlin, Minn., Betty Tupa, Grand Forks, and Susan Newland, Leonard, N.D.; two grandsons; eight stepgrandchildren; sisters, Eunice Burwell, Grand Forks and Lois Nordean, Duluth; and brothers, Odney and Rodger, both of Grand Forks, and Curtis, East Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death
by his parents.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, River Heights Lutheran Church, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks.

Helgi Thorlakson
HENSEL, N.D. - Helgi Thorlakson, 77, Hensel and Neche, N.D., died
Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in Phoenix (Ariz.) Baptist Hospital.
Helgi Thorlakson was born
April 12, 1920, the son of Thorlakur and Halldora (Thorgrimsdottir) Thorlakson, in Hensel. He attended school in Hensel and Park River, N.D. He married
Dorothy Voecks. He farmed in the Hensel area, and worked for Jenson Construction, Neche. He was a Neche police officer. He was a resident of Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, N.D., until December 1996, when he moved to Phoenix to live with his daughter.
He is survived by daughters Evelyn (Felix) DeJesus, Phoenix, and Sharon Kirkland, Engelwood, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death
by a brother, Erick.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, and one hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Vidalin Cemetery, Hensel.
Tracy Johnson
Tracy Johnson, 34, Fairfield, Calif., formerly of Grand Forks, died
Friday, Jan. 16, 1998.
Tracy Lynn Gray was born
Dec. 30, 1963, the daughter of Larry and Linda Gray. She graduated from Modesto (Calif.) Junior College. She received her degree at UC Santa Barbara, California, and her master's degree and Ph.D. at UND.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard Johnson, Fairfield; a daughter, Alexandria Lynn Johnson, Fairfield; her parents, Los Osos, Calif.; a brother, James Troy, Las Osos; and grandmother, Rosemary Stoltz, Las Vegas.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Lakewood Funeral Home, Hughson, Calif.
Burial: Lakewood Memorial Park.
Vernon Shroyer
Vernon Shroyer, 86, 1624 Seventh Ave. N., died
Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Altru Hospital.
Vernon Shroyer was born
Dec. 31, 1911, the son of Ira and Lily Shroyer, in New Rockford, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He attended UND, Mayville (N.D.) State and Wahpeton (N.D.), before attending Park Air College, St. Louis.
He later returned to New Rockford, where he was a flight instructor, flew charter air service and worked as a commercial pilot for Western Airline.
He married
Gwendolyn Peterson in 1942. She died
in 1950. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1945, he returned to New Rockford, to work at the airport. In 1947, he moved to Grand Forks, where he worked for Ford Motors. He also worked for Red River Cement and Rydell Truck Center.
He moved to Emerado, in 1977. He worked for Sand Steel. He returned to Grand Forks, in 1990. He married
Beverly Ann Weir on April 20, 1952, in Grand Forks.
She survived along with sons Lonnie (Becky) and Rod (Laurel), both of Grand Forks; daughters Glenda (Alexander) Carpp, New Hartford, Conn., and Barbara (David) Slone, East Greenwich, R.I.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death
by a sister, Vida; and brothers, Leland, Leslie and Bert.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Sharon Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 5 to 7: 30 p.m. today, in Amundson Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Sunnywood Gardens Cemetery.
Cyrus Peterson
THIEF RIVER FALLS - Cyrus Peterson, 80, Thief River Falls, died
Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at home.
Cyrus Orice Bernhardt Peterson was born
March 25, 1917, the son of Andrew Miller and Christine (Stenevik) Peterson, in Red Lake County, Minn. He attended rural school in St. Hilaire, Minn. He worked on the family farm. He married
Lois Lillian Lee on Nov. 10, 1943, in Oklee, Minn. They continued to farm until 1964, when they moved to Thief River Falls. He worked as a carpenter at the Grand Forks Air Force Base and Ely, Minn. In 1964, he started an auto wrecking yard, "Peterson Auto Wrecking," which he owned and operated until retiring in August 1982.
He is survived by his wife; sons Rodney and Sheldon (Suzanne), of Thief River Falls; daughters Beverly (Earl) Halfaday, Florence, S.D., Sheryl (Lyle) Morken, Springbrook, N.D., Marlene (Richard) Johnson, Annette (Mark) Swanson and Kimberly (Rick) Hicks, all of Thief River Falls, Pamela Pals, Lakeville, Minn., and Kristie (Bill) Fliehr, Apple Valley, Minn.; 22 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and brother Maurice, Tacoma, Wash.
He was preceded in death
by a grandson; brothers Lloyd, Art, Edgar and Raymond; and sisters Evelyn, Myrtle, and Mabel.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Our Savior's Free Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Irvin Brenna
THIEF RIVER FALLS - Irvin Brenna, 74, Thief River Falls, died
Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Irvin Brenna was born
Dec. 8, 1923, the son of Milton and Inga (Olson) Brenna, in Eden Township, Polk County, near Gully, Minn., where he attended school. He was a member of the U.S. Navy from July 24, 1944 to May 24, 1946, when he returned to Gully.
He married
Jean Hennessey, in 1957, in Conway, N.D. In 1958, they moved to Thief River Falls, where he worked for the Soo Line Railroad and the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He retired in 1986.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Barbara Brenna, New Brighton, Minn.; brother Marvin, Proctor, Minn.; and sisters Inez Gordon, Klamath Falls, Ore., Gladys Megordon, Palm Harbor, Fla., and Vivian Evje, Gully.
He was preceded in death
by brothers, Atwood, Kenneth, and Clifford; and a sister, Ruby.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Altha Melhorn
BEMIDJI - Altha Melhorn, 89, Bemidji, died
Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, in Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji.
Altha May Hanner was born
May 31, 1908, the daughter of Arthur and Izola (Taylor) Hanner, in Moville, Iowa. As an infant, she moved with her family to Pinewood, Minn., where she attended school. She married
Henry Melhorn on Aug. 3, 1926, in Bemidji. They moved to a farm in Northern Township, Beltrami County, Minn., which was later sold to the Beltrami County Fair Board.
She worked as a cook at Fairview Nursing Home and Coachman Cafe, both of Bemidji, and Bemidji High School, until retiring, She worked as a cook at Bemidji State College, in 1973.
Since 1940, she worked on the farm with her husband. Henry Melhorn died
Oct. 2, 1977.
She is survived by daughters Elsie (Bert) Stauty, Duluth, and Darlene (Robert) Cardwell, Waldport, Ore.; sons Robert (Julann), Bemidji, and Richard (Josie) Melhorn; 22 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by sisters, Iona and Eunice.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, First Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.

Mary Buchanan, 76, Salem, Va., formerly of Grand Forks, died

Mary Alice MacDonald was born
Sept. 24, 1921, the daughter of Alexander and Rebecca (Reinholt) MacDonald, in Fargo. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School and UND. She graduated from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She is a retired federal employee, serving several years for the Navy.
She is survived by a sister, Elinore Karsner, Silver Spring, Md.; and brothers, Roland, Louisville, Colo., and Alister, Wilmette, Ill.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, William Gordon Buchanan.

Merritt Flynn
Merritt Flynn, 91, Fargo, formerly of Grand Forks and Greenbush, Minn., died
Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at home.
Merritt Flynn was born
April 12, 1906, the son of Willard Flynn and Hannah Nelson, in Bismarck. He grew up in McLean County, N.D. He graduated from Ryder High School, UND and Columbia University, New York City. He taught rural school in Grant and McLean counties, and Valley City, N.D. He was the superintendent in Millarton, Coleharbor and Killdeer, N.D., and Greenbush. He taught at North Dakota State University, retiring as Professor Emeritus in school administration in 1973. He married
Audrey Thorne in 1930. They resided at Riverview Place, Fargo, since 1989. During World War II, he was an instructor in Air Force Mechanics School in Texas. He was a charter member of the North Dakota Association of School Business officials.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Dennis (Kathryn), San Francisco; and a grandson.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Gethsemane Episcopal Cathedral, Fargo.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
Joseph Lovegreen
BEMIDJI - Joseph Lovegreen, 68, Bemidji, died

Joseph Eugene Lovegreen was born
July 16, 1929, the son of Oldies and Irene May Lovegreen, in Nymore, Minn. He graduated from Walker (Minn.) High School in 1947. He worked for White Castle Hamburgers, Minneapolis. He married
Inez Wolfe on Nov. 17, 1950, in Minneapolis. He joined the U.S. Army on Jan., 9, 1951. He was discharged on Oct. 8, 1952, at the rank of corporal. He served as an inactive Army Reservist from Oct. 8, 1952 to Oct. 11, 1956. He returned home, and worked for Farnum Office Supply Co., Minneapolis. In 1956, he began working for Minneapolis Honeywell Regulator Co. as an evaluation engineer. He retired in 1991. He married
Hazel Barke on June 7, 1980, in Minneapolis. She died
June 22, 1989. In the spring of 1991, he moved to Bemidji.
He is survived by a son, Michael (Debra), New Hope, Minn.; a daughter, Ann (James) Offerdahl, Fosston, Minn.; four grandchildren; several stepchildren and stepgrandchildren; a brother, Glenwood, Pine River, Minn.; and a sister, Ethel Fisher, San Diego.
He was preceded in death
by a son, Scot; and sisters, Irene and Joyce Galindo.

Mable Vance
LEEDS, N.D. - Mable Vance, 78, Leeds, died

Mable Crane was born
Feb. 2, 1919, the daughter of Arthur and Mae (Shamback) Crane, in Leeds, where she graduated from high school. She married
Cloyd Vance on Oct. 9, 1942. During World War II, they lived in Milwaukee. They farmed for 12 years near Leeds. She worked for Home Cafe and Pat's Fairway, Leeds. She also worked at North Dakota School for the Deaf, Devils Lake, and sorted potatoes in Cando, until retiring. Cloyd Vance died
Sept. 14, 1965.
She is survived by a son, Dennis, Leeds; a daughter, Marilyn (Eldon) Paulson, Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren; and sisters, Ruby Stein, Dilworth, Minn., Miriam Anderson, Mukitteo, Wash., and Shirley Metz, Ventura, Calif.
She was preceded in death
by brothers, Walter and Ray; and sisters, Helen Tarang and Florence Anderson.
