Bernice Wendschlag
FILLMORE, N.D. -- Bernice Wendschlag, 72, Minot, formerly of Fillmore, N.D., died Nov. 26, 1997, in Trinity Medical Center, Minot.
Bernice Thompson was born Oct. 28, 1925, the daughter of Markus and Gertie (Iverson) Thompson, in Fillmore, where she grew up and attended school. She moved with her family to Richmond, Calif. during World War II. After the war, they returned to Fillmore. She worked at cafes in Devils Lake and Minot until her retirement. She moved to Trinity Nursing Home, Minot in June 1997. She married Leonard Wendschlag. He died Aug. 9, 1964.
She is survived by brothers, Ivan, Esmond, N.D., Merlin, Kenai, Alaska, and Jack, Ellensburg, Wash.; and sisters, Ruth Kaemerle, Palos Verdes, Calif. and Grace Johnson, Stanley, N.D.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Loren.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Nelson Funeral Chapel, Esmond.
Burial: Fillmore Cemetery.
Purcell Backstrom
MADDOCK, N.D. -- Purcell Backstrom, 85, Maddock, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, in Northwood (N.D.) Deaconess Health Center.
Purcell Backstrom was born Nov. 25, 1912, the son of Charlie and Anne (Stadum) Backstrom, in Maddock. He grew up and attended school in Hesper Township, Benson County, N.D. He graduated from Benson County Agricultural and Training School, Maddock, in 1930. He also attended the North Dakota School of Science, Wahpeton. During rural electrification, he helped wire many farmsteads. He married Alva Foss on May 4, 1941, in Maddock. They lived and farmed northeast of Maddock, until 1945. They moved to a farm northwest of Maddock. In 1976, he retired from farming and moved into Maddock.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Dale (Ruth), London, Ont., Dennis (Priscilla), Philip (Carol), and Paul (Donna), all of Maddock, Marvin, Los Angeles, and Nathan (Connie), Hampton, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; and brothers, Norman, Crystal, Minn. and Charles, Fergus Falls, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Alexander; and a sister, Chrystal.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Bethany Evangelical Free Church, Esmond, N.D.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, in Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock, and one hour before services in the church.
Charles Andrick
DEVILS LAKE -- Charles Andrick, 70, Devils Lake, formerly of Langdon, N.D., died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at home.
Charles Albert Andrick was born Nov. 16, 1927, the son of Hurb M. and Julia Mae (Nelson) Andrick, in Towner County, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Cando, N.D. He graduated from high school in 1945. He joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1945 to 1947. He married Edna Schumacher on Sept. 14, 1951, in Egeland, N.D. They lived in Langdon, where he was the Langdon city auditor, until 1987. In 1994, they moved to Devils Lake.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Larry, Devils Lake and Michael (Judy), Shawnee, Kan.; daughters, Peggy (Frank) Gibson, Highlands, Texas, Kathy (Joe) Airheart, New Underwood, S.D., and Karen (Gene) Bunge, Rapid City, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and brothers, Dale, Prairie Village, Kan. and Ivan, Lindale, Texas.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Rollie; and a sister, Jean Liepke.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: Noon to 9 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Aaker, Dunnigan & Brooks Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Harry Lykken
AUBURN, N.D. -- Harry Lykken, 98, Auburn, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in Unity Medical Center, Grafton, N.D.
Harry Clair Lykken was born Jan. 8, 1900, the son of Hans and Clara (Johnson) Lykken, in Auburn, where he grew up and attended school. He married Hazel (Oihus) Otteson on Nov. 21, 1928, in Grafton. She died May 20, 1979. He lived and farmed near Auburn, retiring in 1993.
He is survived by a son, Lee, Auburn; a daughter, Joy Ann Reading, Draper, Utah; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Eddie, Alvin, and Luther; and sisters, Cora, Hilda, Charolette, Lottie, Alma, Hazel, Mabel and Myrtle.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Tollefson Funeral Chapel, Grafton.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Landstad Cemetery, Auburn.
Clarice Borthwick
UNDERWOOD, N.D. Clarice Borthwick, 67, Underwood, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Clarice Haakenson was born June 21, 1930, the daughter of Clarence and Emma (Overby) Haakenson, in McHenry, N.D., where she grew up and attended school. She married Robert Borthwick on Aug. 4, 1950, in St. Michael, N.D. They lived in Underwood, where she was head housekeeper in the Underwood Nursing Home, retiring in 1982. Robert Borthwick died in September 1997.
She is survived by a son, Duane (Joleen), Underwood; daughters, JoAnn (James) Bear, Fargo, Denice (Matthew) Bear, Glenfield, N.D., and Bonnie (Jamie) Borthwick, Buxton, N.D.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Beatrice Maisel, Billings, Mont., Eileen Dockter, and Marlys Williams, both of New Rockford, N.D., and Gladys Borthwick, Jamestown.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Stanley, Donald and Clifford; and a sister, Dorothy.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Glenfield (N.D.) Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 1 to 7 p.m. today in Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, N.D., and one hour before services in the church.

Weldon 'Weldy' Chandler
Weldon "Weldy" Chandler, 80, Paso Robles, Calif., formerly of Grand Forks, died Dec. 26, 1997, at home.
Weldon Chandler was born Aug. 9, 1917, the son of Bert and Olive (Foubert) Chandler, in Maxbass, N.D. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a Golden Gloves boxer. He operated a pool hall in Grand Forks before moving to California.
He is survived by sons, Gary, Las Vegas, Jeff, Long Beach, Calif., and Bill, Paso Robles; a daughter, Lori Pangalo, Big Island, Hawaii; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Zerine "Honey" Boushey, East Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bea, on July 31, 1992. (Chapel of the Roses, Atascadero, Calif.).
Ellen Winlaw
CAVALIER, N.D. Ellen Winlaw, 86, Cavalier, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier.
Ellen Johannson was born Aug. 28, 1911, the daughter of Arni and Anna (Johnson) Johannson, in Hallson, N.D. She attended school in Hallson and graduated from Cavalier High School, in 1927. She attended St. Luke's School of Nursing, St. Paul, graduating in 1932. She married Edsall Winlaw on Dec. 9, 1932, in Cavalier. He died May 9, 1954. She worked as a staff nurse at Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier.
She is survived by a daughter, Carole (Clarence) Smerud, Moorhead; two granddaughters; and three great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Johann, Gustaf, Arnold and Stephan; and sisters, Gudrun Johnson and Aurora Mitchell.
Services: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Cavalier Presbyterian Church.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Cavalier Cemetery.
Ernest Ellingson
Ernest Ellingson, 63, 822 18th St. N.W., East Grand Forks, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at home.
Ernest Ellingson was born Aug. 14, 1934, the son of Willie and Edith (Hanson) Ellingson, in Grand Forks. Heattended school in Bentru Township, GrandForks County. He graduatedfrom NorthwestSchool of Agriculture, Crookston. He joined the U.S. Army from April 7, 1958, to March 21, 1960. He worked for Lebacken Trucking until joining the Grand Forks Fire Department in January 1965. He retired Aug. 31, 1996. He worked for McDonald Brothers Farms, East Grand Forks. He married Jean Fischer Newland on March 28, 1987.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Darwin (Michelle), Grand Forks; stepchildren, Debbie (George) McDonald and Willard Newland, East Grand Forks, Jerry (Sherry) Taupe, Champlin, Minn., Betty Tupa, Grand Forks, and Susan Newland, Leonard, N.D.; two grandsons; eight stepgrandchildren; sisters, Eunice Burwell, Grand Forks and Lois Nordeen, Duluth; and brothers, Odney and Rodger, both of Grand Forks, and Curtis, East Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cecilia Uhas
Cecilia Uhas, 88, formerly of 101 Fourth Ave. S. and St. Anne's Guest Home, Grand Forks, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in Deaconess Hospital, Northwood, N.D.
Cecilia Magdalene Jahnke was born Aug. 31, 1909, the daughter of John and Olivia (Arnold) Jahnke, in Esmond, N.D. She grew up and attended school in New Rockford, N.D. She married Stanley William Uhas on Jan. 9, 1927, in Minot. They moved to Grand Forks, where she worked at Seegers and Herbergers. Stanley Uhas died Jan. 19, 1961. She was a housemother at the Delta Upsilon fraternity at UND for more than 25 years.
She is survived by a son, Jack (Susan), Minnetonka, Minn.; a daughter, Yvonne (Duane) Berger, Bismarck; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen; brothers, Ed, Ray, John, and Walt; and a sister, Olivia Trueblood.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. today in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Grand Forks.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks. (Norman, Columbia Road).
Lucy Ziegler
DEVILS LAKE - Lucy Ziegler, 84, Fargo, formerly of Devils Lake, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.
Lucy Mertens was born Sept. 19, 1913, the daughter of Henry and Mary (VanSteenvoort) Mertens, in Crary, N.D., where she graduated from high school in 1932. She married Joseph Ziegler on Nov. 8, 1933, in Crary. They farmed in the Devils Lake area until retirement, then moved into Devils Lake. Joseph Ziegler died in February 1982. She remained in Devils Lake, until 1991, when she moved to Fargo.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane (Max) Gilbraith, Fargo; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Ernie, Fargo, John and Gerald, both of Devils Lake, and Charles, Bismarck; and sisters, Dorothy Kalinowski and Jeanette Weirick, both of Devils Lake, Florence DelJuidice and Phyllis Lange, both of Merced, Calif., and Mary Evensen, Mellen, Wis.
She was preceded in death by four brothers; and a sister.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and 8: 30 to 9: 30 a.m. Thursday in the church.
Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.
Mildred 'Milly' Peterson
NIAGARA, N.D. - Mildred "Milly" Peterson, 67, Moose Lake, Minn., formerly of Niagara, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at home.
Mildred Peterson was born in Niagara. She received her nursing degree from the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. She worked at St. John's Hospital, Fargo, and the Fargo Clinic.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald; daughters, Tracey (Norman) Bordine and Lisa Peterson, both of Vancouver, Wash., Kim Peterson, St. Cloud, and Rhonda (Doug) Skelton, Moose Lake; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Norrin Enerson, Andover, Minn.
Services: Will be held today in Hope Lutheran Church, Moose Lake.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Moose Lake (Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski, Moose Lake).
Alice Asheim
BUXTON, N.D. - Alice Asheim, 104, Buxton, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, in Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, N.D.
Alice Rudrud was born Oct. 11, 1893, the daughter of Ole and Pernella Rudrud, in Hillsboro, N.D., where she graduated from high school in 1911. She attended college in Mayville and Valley City, N.D., and received a degree in teaching. She taught school in Traill County, N.D., and Buxton. She married Alfred Asheim on June 15, 1927, in Hillsboro. They made their home near Buxton. In 1988, she moved to Tufte Manor and then to Almonte Living Center, both of Grand Forks. In the spring of 1997, she moved to Luther Memorial Home.
She is survived by three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Ida Kirkeberg, Minneapolis.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Keith; a sister; and six brothers.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Buxton.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Immanual Cemetery, Buxton (Baker, Mayville).
