Anna Roshau
Mass of Christian Burial for Anna Roshau, 87, Killdeer, are Wednesday, February 26, 2003 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Killdeer with Fr. Jerry Ruelle, OSB celebrating. Burial will follow at Killdeer Cemetery.
Visitation is Tuesday, February 25, 2003 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel continuing at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Killdeer with a rosary being said at 7:00 p.m.
Anna Roshau died Friday, February 21, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital and Health Center.
Anna was born August 21, 1915, in Dunn County, ND to John and Katherine Heiser. She attended school in McKenzie County, ND. Anna married Frank Roshau on April 11, 1939 in Grassy Butte, ND. Together they made their home in Dunn County until 1941, at which time the couple moved to McKenzie County. In 1944, together they returned home to Dunn County. For many years Frank and Anna were members of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Killdeer. She was also a member of the Altar society and for several years served as custodian of the church. Her hobbies included gardening, quilting, crocheting, loved to cooking and baking.
Those mourning her passing are her children, George (Glinda), Gainesville, GA, Ralph (Jeanette) Ellijay, GA, Katherine (Leonard) Leingang, Mandan, ND, Amelia (Orville) Woodward, Peoria, AZ, Frank (Mimee), Killdeer, Lenard, Dickinson, ND, Anna (Jim) Hoff, Bismarck, ND; 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; three sisters, Catherine Eberts, Dickinson, ND, Barbara (John) Metz, South Heart, Rose (Linus) Roshau, Killdeer, six brothers, Jacob Heiser, Ralph Heiser, Antone Heiser, Christ (Ilene) Heiser, all of Grassy Butte, Fritz Heiser, Bozeman, MT and Frankie Heiser, Roundup, MT.
Her parents, husband, two sisters, five brothers and one daughter-in-law preceded her in death.
Sylvester Binek
Sylvester, “S.A.” Binek, age 91, died of old age at St. Luke’s Nursing Home, Dickinson, ND on February 17, 2003.
A Memorial Service for Sylvester, “S.A.” Binek, age 91, will be Saturday, April 12, 2003, 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel. A reception will follow the service at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson and graveside service being held at 2:30 p.m. in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Dickinson.
Sylvester was born the son of Frank and Francis (Haberman) Binek on August 17, 1911 on a farm near Elgin, ND. He was 6 months old when his family moved to the vicinity of Hebron, ND. His father operated a coal mine and clay bank for the Hebron Brick Company. At the age of 15, the family moved to Lehigh. He worked in the family mine until the age of 24. In 1935, the North Dakota Workman’s Compensation Commission appointed him State Mine Inspector. On September 23, 1939, he married Louise Snortland, of Tolna, ND. Louise died on March 30, 1978. When WWII broke out he resigned to accept a position as Federal Agent governing ND and SD to control the storage, handling and transportation of all explosives. After the war he owned and operated the Golden Maid Café in Bismarck. After 3 years he sold the business and went prospecting in Wyoming, Utah and Washington. The family lived in Colville, WA for five years. He moved to Dickinson in 1960 and worked for the State Highway Department until his retirement in 1976.
In 1997, he wrote and published “Coal Miner’s Son”, a family history and the story of his experiences in early mining in North Dakota. He was a Golden Eagle Member of the Eagles Club of Bismarck.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandie (Thomas) House of Williamsburg, VA and sons and daughters-in-law, Frank (Kelly), and Gary (Clova) all of Las Vegas, NV. Grandchildren; Roberta Kirk of Peachtree City, GA and Bradley and Bryan Binek, both of Las Vegas, NV; one great-grandchild, Kevin Kirk; two step grandchildren, Erin Haver and Tara Chambers; two sisters, Mary Marsh and Monica Krance, both of Trenton, MO; two brothers, Tom and Ted Binek, both of Dickinson, ND and special friend, Verna Halter, of Dickinson.
Sylvester's parents, his wife, sister, Martha Zastoupil and brothers, Mike, Martin, George, Daniel, Tony, Edward, and Steve preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to St. Luke’s Home, 242 10th Street West, Dickinson, ND 58601.
Cecilia Roller
Mass of Christian burial for Cecilia Roller, 93, of Dickinson will be Thursday, February 20, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, New England with Father William Cosgrove, celebrating. Internment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, New England.
Visitation is Wednesday, February 19, 2003, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a rosary being said at 1:30 p.m. in St. Luke’s Home. Visitation will resume at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. followed by a vigil.
Cecilia passed away on Monday, February 17, 2003 at the St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson.
Cecilia, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Zentner) Friedt, was born April 5, 1909, in rural Mott, ND. She was raised and attended country school in Hettinger County. Later she met her husband, Frank F. Roller and they were married in St. Placidus Church on October 26, 1937. Together they farmed west of New England and raised their family of nine children. She took pride in her interest of baking, cooking and crocheting. She will be long remembered by her grandchildren for the many pranks she played on them. Cecilia loved the companionship of others, especially her family, friends and neighbors. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Altar Guild, Senior Citizens and Grandma’s Club. In 1974, Frank and Cecilia moved into New England and in 1997 they made their home in Dickinson. The most important characteristic of her life was her humble nature and daily devotion to Christ and his Blessed Mother Mary.
Cecilia will be greatly missed by her husband Frank Roller of Dickinson, children, James (Betty) Roller of Eugene, OR, Thomas (Jan) Roller of Montgomery, AL, Victor Roller of Dickinson, David (Deb) Roller of Gilbert, AZ, Ronald (Char) Roller of Beloit, WI, Benedict (Diane) Roller of Bismarck, Mary (Joe) Privratsky of Dickinson; 26 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren; two daughter-in-laws, Kathleen Roller of Dickinson, Joellen Roller of Bismarck and one sister, Margaret Frank of Dickinson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, five sisters, two sons, Albert & Joseph Roller, five grandchildren, Betsy Roller, Mark, Peter, Joseph, and Calvin Privratsky.
Elizabeth Allen
Elizabeth “Betty” Allen: wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, 78, Dickinson, died Friday, February 21, 2003 at St Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial for Betty is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dickinson with Father Claude Seeberger, celebrating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery followed by a luncheon at Knights of Columbus, Dickinson.
Visitation is Monday, Feb. 24, 2003 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a rosary being said at 7:00 p.m. followed by a vigil.
Betty Braun was born on May 11, 1924, East of Dickinson to Paul and Mary Eve Braun. She was raised by her sister, Mary, and husband, John Froelich on a farm South of South Heart. She attended a country grade school south of South Heart. Betty graduated from St. Pius Catholic High School in Sheffield, North Dakota. She then attended Dickinson’s State Teacher’s College and then attended Northern Pacific Telegrapher School in Jamestown, North Dakota. Betty accepted a telegrapher position with Northern Pacific Railway. She worked for the railway until her marriage to Bill Houck in 1947. Her first daughter, Karen, was born in 1948 and husband, Bill, died in 1949. Following the death of her husband, Bill, she worked for the ASCS Office in Dickinson. On April 2, 1951. Betty married Henry Allen from Sentinel Butte, North Dakota. Together, they lived in the Dickinson area and on a farm South of Dickinson for the next 51 years. Here, they raised seven children. After raising her children, Betty went to work for Woolworths and JC Penneys and retired in 1984. Betty was active as a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hosp., delivered for “Meals on Wheels” and was an active member of the Senior Citizens Center Square Dance group.
Betty is survived by Henry, her husband of 51 years, and seven children: Karen Allen, Arroyo Grande, CA; Les (Joy), Champaign, IL; Rita (John) Meyer, Minot, North Dakota; Rod, Boston, MA; LaVonne ( Kent) Fritz, Dickinson, North Dakota; Joyce (Ron) Bushaw, Thompson, North Dakota; Tony ( Sharon) Minn., MN. Betty is survived by 15 grandchildren, Jason, Jeremy, Nate, Arlie, Lydia, Wendy, Robbie, Lisa, Danny, Madeline, Kyle, Chris, Nick, Christie, Tonya and 5 great-grand children, Morgan, Garrik, Cyanna, Parker and Johnie. She was preceded in death by one grandchild, John.
Betty was a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother and friend. She loved life and has given her family memories of a lifetime. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation in her name.
Helen Agnes Kadrmas
Funeral Services for Helen Agnes Kadrmas, 88, of Huntsville, AL, formerly of Dickinson are Saturday, August 2, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father James Braaten, celebrating. Interment will follow in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.
Helen passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2003, in Huntsville, Alabama.
Helen Agnes (Dvorak) Kadrmas was born on April 24, 1915, in Dickinson, ND. Helen was the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Splichal) Dvorak (deceased) in a family of eight brothers (Joe, Peter, Paul, Stanley, Tom, Tony, and Vincent) and three sisters (Rose, Emma, and Mildred). Helen married Louis Vincent Kadrmas on October 4, 1937. Their family of three sons (Dennis, Kenneth, and Clarence) have a total of nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Louis and Helen were well known in Dickinson and resided at 144 11th Avenue West prior to his death in 1993. Helen moved to Huntsville, Alabama in May 2000. Her great love was taking care of her home, yard and doing housekeeping for many families in Dickinson.
Helen will be greatly missed by her sons, Dennis L. (Terry) of Portland, Oregon, Kenneth A. (Lynda) of Alabama, Clarence L. (Lois) of Minnesota; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Adam Miller
Mass of Christian Burial for Adam Miller, 75, Dickinson, is Thursday, March 13, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Austin Vetter, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Visitation is Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. led by Jerry & Agnes Kelly. Visitation continuing Thursday until one hour prior to service.
Adam passed away Monday, March 10, 2003, at St. Joseph Health Care in Dickinson.
Adam was born on April 26, 1927 to John A. and Monica (Fichter) Miller on the family farm near Gladstone. He grew up and attended country schools near there. Adam began farming with his brother Val and together with the aid of their sister Elvira they farmed until 1991 when they retired. They moved to Dickinson where they have made their home since. Adam enjoyed doing word puzzles and listening to music. He was a quiet, gentle person who always took care of his family. Adam was a very active member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Dickinson.
Survivors include, four sisters, Tillie Rettig, Kathy (Clarence) Hanel, Elvira (Patty) Miller all of Dickinson and Lorane (Lori) Raab, Phoenix, AZ; two sister-in-laws, Sharon and Mary Miller, a brother-in-law, Ben Wolbaum all of Dickinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Christ, Mike and Valentine; a sister, Margaret Wolbaum; a brother-in-law, Ambrose Rettig and a sister-in-law, Cecilia Miller.
Sydne K. Carlson
Memorial Service for Sydne Kay Carlson, 51 years old, of Coralville, Iowa, is Sunday, June 22, 2003 at 2:00 pm in the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Burial will be in the Family lot of the Dunn Center Cemetery, Dunn Center, ND on Wednesday, June 25, 2003.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm continuing on Wednesday from 8:00 am to 10:00 am at the Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel and then one hour prior to service at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Killdeer.
Sydne Kay Carlson, Coralville, Iowa died peacefully on June 20, 2003 after a yearlong battle with cancer. Her funeral will be at Saint John’s Lutheran Church, Killdeer, North Dakota at 2 pm, on Wednesday, June 25, 2003.
Sydne was born on July 17, 1951 to Grant and Mildred (Knutson) Carlson. She attended country school for 3 years than attended Killdeer Public School graduating in 1969. Sydne received her Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition from North Dakota State University in 1973. Upon graduation, she was accepted as a dietetic intern at the University of Iowa, thus, beginning her thirty-year career at the university. She completed her master’s degree in Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health in 1978. Sydne worked as a surgery, clinic, maternal, relief, diabetes, medicine, and consultant dietitian. She also was a nutrition instructor for Kirkwood Community College.
Sydne was instrumental in the development of the Diabetes Education program in 1982, and became a Certified Diabetes Educator in 1986. She helped thousands of patients manage their diabetes. She played a major role in securing health care benefits for Iowans to receive diabetic supplies and education.
Sydne authored several professional publications in the areas of diabetes and weight control and was a recognized nutrition expert in these fields. She taught thousands of health care professionals and was an active member of the American Diabetic Association, American Dietetic Association, Iowa Dietetic Association, and American Association of Diabetes Educators.
Sydne will forever be remembered as a kind, knowledgeable, and dedicated dietitian/friend who was completely committed to her patients, profession and family. She was a gentle soul who touched so many lives. Sydne’s family and friends will cherish all their loving memories of her and will forever miss her accepting, unconditional love.
Sydne was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and served as Lutheran Brotherhood Branch #8177 board secretary for many years. She enjoyed gardening, reading, music and was an avid University of Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Sydne is survived by her father, Grant Carlson, Killdeer, North Dakota, one sister, Gwen (Robert) Hoffman, Oakes, North Dakota, one brother, Kent (Jodi) Carlson, Killdeer, North Dakota, one niece, Nancy (Kevin) Gelinske, Oakes, North Dakota, three nephews, Chad Hoffman, Oakes, North Dakota, Kory and Klay Carlson, Killdeer, North Dakota and two great niece’s, Shelby and Peyten Gelinske, Oakes, North Dakota.
Her mother, Mildred, and grandparents, Guy and Miriam Carlson, and Bert and Martha Knutson preceded her in death.
