Charles Hammer
FERTILE, Minn. -- Charles Hammer, 72, Fertile, died Thursday, May 8, 1997.
Charles Bernard Hammer was born Nov. 15, 1924, the son of Helmer and Joenetta (Moen) Hammer, in Fertile. He graduated from Fertile-Beltrami (Minn.) High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy June 22, 1943, serving during World War II. He married Shirley Nordahl in 1947. He worked at Edgington Oil Refinery in Long Beach, Calif. Shirley Hammer died Feb. 13, 1977. He retired Dec. 30, 1982. He married Esther Olson May 19, 1984, in Los Banos, Calif. They returned to Fertile in 1986. Esther Hammer died Dec. 15, 1995.
He is survived by a grandson; a great-grandson; stepsons, Michael (Carol) Olson, St. Cloud, Minn., and Rodd (Francine) Olson, Crookston; a stepdaughter, Dorothy (Joe) Sandberg, Erskine, Minn.; and a brother, Reuben, Santa Nella, Calif.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles II; and brothers, Harvey and Orville.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday in Varnes Lutheran Church, Fertile.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile.
Mary Mongoven
Mary Mongoven, 101, 208 Second Ave. N.W., East Grand Forks, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, in Colonial Nursing Center, Groton, S.D., after being evacuated due to flooding.
Mary Alda Driscoll was born Jan. 15, 1896, the daughter of James and Anna Jane (Sullivan) Driscoll Sr., in East Grand Forks, where she attended school. She married Henry Mongoven Aug. 24, 1921, in East Grand Forks. He died in August, 1956.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Mongoven, East Grand Forks; sons, James, East Grand Forks, William, Chipley, Fla., and John, St. Louis; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a brother, John, East Grand Forks; and sisters, Edna Harvey, Crookston, Louise Stowe, Anoka, Minn., Mary King, East Grand Forks, and Frances Weber, Campbell, Minn.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday in Norman Funeral Home, Columbia Road, Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks.
Martha Pearson
LANGDON, N.D. -- Martha Pearson, 86, Langdon, died Friday, May 9, 1997, in Cavalier (N.D.) County Memorial Hospital, Langdon.
Martha Ellen Symons was born Dec. 27, 1910, the daughter of William and Martha (Leach) Symons, in Manilla Township, Cavalier County, N.D. She attended school in Easby, N.D., and Langdon. She attended Northwestern University in the Twin Cities. In 1930, she moved to Texas, returning to Langdon in the mid-1930s. She worked at Cavalier County Courthouse, Langdon. She married Milton Pearson Nov. 17, 1945, in Grand Forks.
She is survived by a son, Edwin (Gail), Langdon; a daughter, Beth (Marvin) Heck, Munich, N.D.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Adam, Langdon; and a sister, Mary Evans, Langdon.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Fred, George and John; and a sister, Maud McGauvern.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday in Our Saviour Episcopal Church, Langdon.
Visitation: 2 to 9 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon.
Jack Tanner
Jack Tanner, 79, Bethany, Mo., formerly of Grand Forks, died Friday, May 9, 1997, in a Bethany hospital.
Jack C. Tanner was born Feb. 26, 1918, to Clifford W. and Clara Mae (Prather) Tanner in Harrison County, Mo. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired as president of American Crystal Sugar Co. in Moorhead, Minn. He lived in Moorhead, Denver and Grand Forks. He married Frieda Trainer, Dec. 9, 1942.
He is survived by, a daughter, Martha Cashen, Denver; sons, Kenneth, Tenafly, N.J., and Richard, Engelwood, Colo.; a brother, Edwin, Bethany; sisters, Mildred Kennedy, Hot Springs, Ark., Muza Weisz, Lake St. Louis, Miss., and Kay Dommick, Richmond, Miss.
He was preceded in death by his wife.
Services: Will be held in Bethany.
Burial: Miriam Cemetery, Bethany. Memorials are suggested to Harrison County Hospice (Roberson-Polley, Bethany).
Valborg Whelan
BEMIDJI -- Valborg Whelan, 83, Puposky, Minn., died Friday, May 9, 1997, in North County Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Valborg Barbara Jallen was born Sept. 19, 1913, to Wilhelm and Ingeborg (Mygaard) Jallen, in Debs, Minn., where she attended school. She married Wallace Whelan in June 1930 in Bemidji. They lived in Grand Marais, Minn., Minneapolis, and Island Lake, Beltrami County, Minn. While in Island Lake, she owned and operated the Island Lake Tavern for many years. After her retirement, she continued to live in the Island Lake area.
She is survived by a son, Michael, Puposky; daughters, Barbara (Gordon) Thompson, Tacoma, Wash., LaVonne (Larry) Chelko, Duluth, Ga., and Roxanne Stevens, Bemidji; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emma (Ralph) Garrison, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, David; brothers, Arthur, Godfred, Fred, Elmer and Ingvald; and sisters, Margaret Arfsten and Gerda Giles.
Services: Will be held at a later date (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Violet Overbo
Violet Overbo, 83, Grand Forks, died Friday, May 9, 1997, in Good Samaritan Center, Arthur, N.D.
Violet Mae Werner was born Sept. 17, 1913, the daughter of Albert and Mary Roberta (Tschabold) Werner, in Hampden, N.D., where she attended school. She married Nenford Hamre Jan. 4, 1934. He preceded her in death. She married Vernon Overbo July 6, 1973. He also preceded her in death. She worked at Strinden Hardware Store and the Ben Franklin Store.
She is survived by sons, Richard (Rhonda) Hamre, Grand Forks, Larry (Connie) Hamre, Fargo, and LuVerne (Joan) Hamre, Davis, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Milton; and a sister, Verna Peters.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday in Faith Evangelical Free Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Sunnywood Gardens, Grand Forks (Amundson, Grand Forks).
