Michael D. Ackerman
Michael D. Ackerman passed away at the age of 48 on April 6 after a short battle with cancer. He had lived in Fullerton, Calif., for many years and considered himself a permanent California transplant having lived in Southern California since 1981.
Mike was born in Jamestown on May 4, 1961, and spent his childhood in the town of Wishek — where his ancestors had homesteaded in the late 1800s. He attended high school and college in Dickinson, where he formed lifelong friendships with his fellow 1979 graduates. After a brief stint attending the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, Mike packed his bags and moved to sunny Southern California. There he pursued a career as a mechanical engineer earning his associate’s degree in the early 1990s. He was a dedicated and meticulous employee who always put work first and play second.
When at play, Mike enjoyed golfing and deep-sea fishing. He was able to realize his dream of owning a boat worthy of navigating the mighty Pacific Ocean and enjoyed taking friends and family on excursions. He was never happier than when he was catching Yellowtail Tuna and was pretty happy even when he didn’t catch anything!
Mike is survived by his mother Arlys, his father Don and his sisters Gail and Julie. He is survived by his one and only niece, Mira, who was the apple of his eye. His brothers-in-law Richard and Steve share his immediate family’s sorrow. Mike will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will take place in Wishek in July. At that time, Michael’s creamains will be laid to rest at the Johannesdale Country Cemetery. Offers of condolences may be sent to his parents, Don and Arlys Ackerman, at 621 Third Ave. S, Wishek, ND 58495.
