Alvin Robert Heupel was born May 28, 1937 in Bison, SD to Alfred and Nora (Rattei) Heupel. He was the oldest of 13 children and grew up on the farm southwest of Bison. Alvin spent a lot of his youth working with his father, where his love for horses started. They did everything by with horses; planting, haying and feeding with teams.

In his early 20's, Alvin moved to Bowman, ND where he worked for farmers and rancher, worked at the Sale Barn, the State Department and helped built Bowman Haley Dam. While living in the Bowman area, he met Geraldine Volk. They were married and to this union, six children were born, Rodney, Loretta, Roger, Ross, Russel and Redgi. On his 20 acre place, Alvin raised horses, cows and pigs. He worked for American Colloid, Hettinger Sale Barn, Gregorian Inc. and Lemmon Livestock for 30 years or more. For many years he was known as the man who had trained his horses to jump into and out of his pickup box. During these years he trained and broke horses for other people as well as his own.

Alvin met Arlis and she moved in with him in May of 1984. They were married on June 4, 1992. After all the children left, they worked together hauling bales and farrowing pigs. They were always busy along with their jobs.

Alvin loved to go to dances, rodeos, watch horse shows on TV and ride his horses to keep them in shape. Horses where a big part of his life and they always made him happy, whether riding or driving his cart for relaxation.

Rich, wonderful husband, father, brother, son and hero passed away on June 24, at Hill Top Home of Comfort in Killdeer after a hard-fought, courageous battle with cancer, a diagnosis that he waged war against right up until his last breath.

Richard (“Rich” or “Rick”) Jerome Hartman was born in Dickinson to Jerome and Isabelle (Roshau) Hartman on Aug. 24, 1949. Rich graduated with the Class of 1967 from Killdeer High School and was proud of his accomplishments as a football player, where he received all-conference honors. On Aug. 24, 1974, he married his soul mate, Pam (Bruce) Hartman in Glasgow, Mont., where they lived for a short time. From there, they moved to Williston, where Rich worked for Go Line Well Services. In 1978, their next move was to Killdeer, where he ranched and farmed with his dad and also worked in the oilfields for Chevron. After retiring from ranching and farming, Rich worked for Petro Hunt until his decline in health.

Rich was known for his dedication, commitment and loyalty to his community. He served on the Killdeer Fire Department, the Killdeer Lion’s Club and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. His passion was golf, and he served on the Dunn County Golf Association Board where he was a charter member. He was instrumental in getting Killdeer’s golf course built and spent hours out at the course making sure things were done just right!

Rich also loved to travel, taking his family on many memorable vacations.

Rich will be remembered for his generosity, commitment to helping others, and for being a faithful, loyal friend and family man. There wasn’t a person that Rich met who wasn’t instantly his friend.

Sharing in his life are the loves of his life: his wife, Pam, and his children: Kolter, Denver; Kara, Rochester, Minn.; Jana (fiance Jamie Kubik), Plymouth, Minn.; Justin (Kylee), Thornton, Colo.; and his grandchild, Addy, his mini-me, who meant the world to him.
