Bruce E. Verhulst, age 47 of Reeder, passed away on Thursday, May, 23, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.
The Funeral Service for Bruce will be held at 10:30am Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Reeder. Pastor Stephanie Swanson will officiate and following a time of fellowship and a luncheon, burial will be in the Ralph Lutheran Cemetery.
A Family and Friends Service will be held on Monday evening at 7:00pm at the Centennial Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger.
Special music will be provided by Carolyn Erickson, Elizabeth Verhulst, and Angie Oase.
Serving as casketbearers are Richard Sarsland, Gene Robinson, Jeff Jung, Kim Hodell, Tony Dillon, and Bob Sousa. All family and friends are considered Honorary Bearers.
A Memorial has been established.
BRUCE EDWARD VERHULST was born June 16, 1965 in Bowman, ND, the youngest of five children born to Ralph E. and Beatrice V. (Pederson) Verhulst. He was baptized and confirmed at Ralph Lutheran Church. He attended grade school at Ralph and attended two years of high school in Scranton and then graduated from Bowman High School in 1984. During his high school years he played football. Bruce then began working for Jim Bingaman near Prairie City on his farm and ranching operation.
Bruce was united in marriage to Laura Lee. They lived in Lemmon where he worked for NoDak Farm Supply and later on began working for Wheeler Manufacturing.
On July 26, 1997, Bruce was united in marriage to Linda Finchem. They continued to live in Lemmon where they were employed with Wheeler Manufacturing. In 2005, they moved to the Verhult ranch at Ralph when Bruce took a job working for GMHR cleaning and repairing railroad cars in Scranton.
Bruce and Linda moved to Reeder where they have continued to live since. He began working at the Scranton Equity/ Pronto Parts operating the tire repair truck.
Bruce suddenly became ill in April 2013 and was diagnosed with lung cancer on April 30, 2013.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding bike with his dog Cheyenne, and remodeling a 1943 international tractor given to him by his dad. He loved playing cards and gambling, especially playing pull tabs, and loved going to the casinos.
Bruce was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, the Reeder Volunteer Fire Department, Reeder Park Board, and volunteered for numerous activities and events in the area.
Keeping him in their fondest memories are his wife, Linda, Reeder, ND; step-daughter, Shaya Finchem, Stanberry, MO; Step-granddaughters, Nikole and Allison, and step-grandson, Austin; his mother, Beatrice Verhulst, Reeder, ND; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Barbara Verhulst, Ralph, SD; 3 sisters and 2 brothers-in-law, Diane Sanford, Reeder, ND; Pam and Greg Oase, Bismarck, ND; Nancy and Scott Doe, Beulah, ND; brother-in-law, Neal Johnson and his family, Tia and Tyler, Bismarck, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bruce was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Verhulst, his grandparents, Anders and Olive Pederson and Edward and Lila Verhulst and brother-in-law, Lane Johnson; and his dear pet cats, Fred and Barney.
Visitation will be on Monday from 1:00 to 7:00pm at the Centennial Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger and on Tuesday one hour prior to services at the church in Reeder.
Barbara Coles
March 28, 1922 - May 17, 2013
Lemmon, South Dakota
Funeral services for Barbara Coles, age 91, of Lemmon, SD, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the Prince of Peace Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon, SD. Rev. Bob Edwards will officiate with burial in the Gallaway Cemetery near Meadow, SD.
Barbara Sykes was born on March 28, 1922 in Almondbury, West Yorkshire, England. She was raised in the Church of England and educated in the church schools. Barbara served in the British Army during World War II.
Barbara and Forest Coles were married in 1947 and started their life together on a farm south of Shadehill. Their daughters, Sandra and Adrienne were born before they moved to Lemmon in 1954.
Barbara was a long standing member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She also served as president, secretary, treasurer and convention delegate for the church and auxiliary.
Barbara went to work for the Five Counties Hospital in 1959 and received her Aid certificate in 1967; she continued to work for the hospital until 1972. She remained a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and Thrift shop.
Barbara passed away on Friday, May 17, 2013 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sandra Shaddrick, Reno, NV and Adrienne Thomle, Plymouth, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellen and John Sykes; her husband, Forest Coles in 1991; her only grandchild, Bree Megan Shaddrick in 1999; and her beloved grandmother, Mary Elizabeth.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
A memorial has been established to the Wounded Warriors Project in memory of Forest and Barbara Coles.
Merilee Brattvet
May 9, 1964 - May 4, 2013
Mandan, North Dakota
Merilee Brattvet, age 48, of Mandan, ND and formerly of Hettinger, ND, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Sanford Health Continuing Care Center off Collins in Mandan, ND.
She is survived by her two brothers, Randy Brattvet, San Tan Valley, ND and Blair (Sharon) Brattvet, Grand Forks, ND; four nieces and nephews; and five great-nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and private family services will be held at a later date.

Lyle Duane Witt
January 7, 1951 - May 1, 2013
Hettinger, North Dakota
Funeral services for Lyle Witt, age 62, of Hettinger, ND, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Lemmon, SD. Rev. John Irwin and Chaplain David Peterson will officiate with burial to follow in the Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon, SD.
Special music will be provided by Marilyn Willey, pianist.
Serving as casketbearers are Mike Johnson, Keith Wolff, John Jahner, Dennis Guenther, Jerry Ostle, Chad Chadwick, Kenny Chadwick, Jody Witt and Josh Stang. All of Lyle's friends and family are considered honorary casketbearers.
Lyle Duane Witt was born on January 7, 1951 in Elgin, ND, to Robert and Leola (Crow) Witt. Lyle grew up on the Witt Farm southeast of Lodgepole, SD, with his five brothers and one sister, Jim Witt, Joyce (Witt) Bauman, Dan Witt, Tom Witt, Mike Witt and Jerry Witt. Lyle attended grade school at the Carr School and graduated from Hettinger High School in 1969.
Following his graduation, Lyle attended college in Denver, CO, for a short period of time, then moving to Mississippi to do custom harvesting. While in Mississippi, he met and married Ann (McCool-Witt) Munro. Lyle and Ann were blessed with five children, Robert Aaron Witt (deceased), Johnny Duane Witt, Jason Lyle Witt, Jody Ann Witt and Jeffrey Robert Witt.
Lyle worked at farming and ranching in the later 1970's, moving his family to Lemmon, SD, in 1976, purchasing the Harold Crow Family home and working for the City of Lemmon. In 1981 Lyle joined the oil field business moving to Watford City, ND. From there, Lyle managed an oil business in the states of Colorado, Utah and Texas. In 1991 Lyle and his family moved to Hettinger, ND, after retiring from the oil business.
Lyle was employed and lived in Hettinger until owning and operating his trucking business in 2005, which took him cross country. Wanting to be closer to his children and grandchildren, Lyle sold his truck in 2011 and was employed with CC Flooring and Backyard Mechanics until his passing on May 1, 2013.
Lyle passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.
He is survived by his mother, Leola Witt, Hettinger, ND; three sons, Johnny Witt, Jason Witt and Jeff (Valerie) Witt, all of Hettinger, ND; one daughter, Jody Witt, Williston, ND; 16 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; three brothers, Dan Witt, Sioux Falls, SD, Tom (Brenda) Witt, Marion, SD and Jerry (Kristie) Witt, Lemmon, SD; one sister, Joyce (Duane) Bauman, Rock Springs, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lyle was preceded in death by one son, Robert Aaron Witt; his father, Robert Witt; two brothers, Jim and Mike Witt; and two nieces, Angela and Amy Witt.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a family service at 7:00 p.m. all at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
