Joan Hasche

Joan Hasche, 87, Bismarck, passed away on October 3, 2003, at a Bismarck care center.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1:00 PM at McCabe United Methodist Church in Bismarck with the Rev. Art Scanson officiating. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Visitation will be Monday from 4 - 7 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue Tuesday on hour prior to the service at the church.

Joan Creswell was born on June 23, 1916, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Chester and Florence (McIntyre) Creswell. She attended schools in Minneapolis and graduated from West High School. She worked for many years at Powers Department Store, eventually becoming buyer for Better Dresses. She also studied at the University of Minnesota.

On October 1, 1944, Joan married Howard Hasche in Minneapolis. Following Howard's discharge from the Army in 1946, the couple moved to Glendive, Montana, where they resided until they moved to Bismarck in 1970.

Joan was a member of McCabe United Methodist Church, Mt. Republic Chapel in Silver Gate, Montana, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was active in church groups, served as Sunday School teacher, was a youth group leader, and was a Girl Scout leader. Joan was an avid bridge player and devoted considerable time to creating handicrafts for the church's bazaars. Joan loved the cabin that she and Howard built in Silver Gate, Montana, especially enjoying all the wildlife in the area.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Joan and Alvin Trafton of Manhattan Beach, California; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Kitty Hasche of Aurora, Colorado; and her cherished granddaughter, Sarah Trafton, also of Manhattan Beach.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to McCabe United Methodist Church, Intermountain Children's Home in Helena, Montana, or charity of donor's choice.

Annabel Broeckel

Annabel "Ann" Broeckel, 84, Bismarck, died October 3, 2003, at a Bismarck hospital after a short illness.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church in Bismarck with the Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3 - 5 PM at Boelter-Eastgate Funeral Service, 200 W. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck.

Ann was born on February 23, 1919, in Underwood, North Dakota, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Keel) Fischer. She was raised in Turtle Lake, North Dakota, where she attended schools. Ann married Herbert Broeckel on February 28, 1937, at Turtle Lake. Together they worked and raised their family in Mandan-Bismarck.

She enjoyed a special, loving relationship with her husband, Herb, her children, and her grandchildren. Herb preceded Ann in death in 1981. Ann devoted the rest of her life as the true, loving leader and provider of wisdom for her family.

Ann's professional career was with J.C. Penney in Bismarck, retiring as Personnel Manager in 1972.

She is survived by her four children, Gene (Ann) Broeckel of Chico, California, Dick (Jan) of Broeckel of Phoenix, Arizona, Cheryl (Roy) Doerr of Minot, North Dakota, and Joan (Terry) Brosseau of Bismarck; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Vi (Lloyd) Houstman of Bismarck, Joyce Hieb of Bismarck, June Thorson of Gainsville, Virginia, and Jean (Dale) Coleman of Baldwin; and one brother, Frank (Marvel) Fischer of Jamestown.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husband, Herb.

Ruth Hartl

Ruth Alice Hartl, formerly of Bismarck, ND, died October 2, 2003, in Burke, VA. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas E. Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Ruth, the daughter of Axel and Emma (Anderson) Stenquist, was born November 14, 1913, on a farm in Painted Woods Township near Wilton, ND. She attended school in Wilton, graduating from Wilton High School in 1931 as valedictorian of her class. She then attended Augsburg Business College in Fargo, North Dakota.
Ruth was employed for 2 ½ years in the State Tax Commissioner's Office in Bismarck where she met her husband. Albert Hartl. They were married June 25, 1935, at St. Mary's Pro Cathedral. They made their home in Bismarck until Al was called to active duty in World War II and moved the family to California. When her husband was sent to the Pacific, Ruth and the four girls returned to Bismarck. After the war, they moved to Fergus Falls, MN where her husband was employed by Otter Tail Power Company. Pat and young Al joined the family there. They lived there until her husband's retirement when they returned to Bismarck. A few years after her husband's death in 1995, Ruth moved to Burke, VA, to be nearer several daughters.

Ruth was active in both her church and community. Of special interest to her was the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a member of this organization for 67 years. While in Fergus Falls, she organized its first Court and was elected its first Grand Regent. She also served two terms as District Deputy. Upon her return to Bismarck, she served a term as District Deputy for the Bismarck Court and was chairman of their 65th Anniversary Celebration.

While in Fergus Falls, Ruth was the president of the region's Catholic Charities Guild, co-chairman of the Parish Religious Education Committee, a member of the League of Women Voters, and a den mother for Cub Scouts. She belonged to the Women's Club, a literary group, serving one term as its president. She also was co-chairman of the Pioneer 100 Club, a fund raising committee for Pioneer Home, serving as a director of this nursing facility for 6 years.

During her lifetime Ruth received several church awards. The Diocese of St. Cloud presented her with the Legion of Merit Award, and the Bismarck Knights of Columbus Council 6540 honored the Hartl's with the Family of the Year Award. As a Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, she earned 4 promotions.

Ruth is survived by 5 daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene and Robert M. Kools of Appleton, WI, Claudeen and Kenneth Boyd of Brandon, FL, Kathleen and Dennis Faltynski of High Point, NC, Mary and Joseph Pettit of Burkee, VA and Patricia and Joseph Doyle of Potamac Falls, VA; one son, Albert of Pasadena, CA; eleven grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four sisters, Edith Berry, Astrid Johnson, Hildur Bitner, and Edna Brostrom, and a half-brother, Einar Nordstrom of Sweden.

In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established. Gestures of concern may be sent to Mary Pettit, 6668 Old Blacksmith Drive, Burke, VA 22015

Christine Schumacher

Christine Schumacher, 94, Bismarck, died October 7, 2003, at a Bismarck care center.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 AM at Church of St. Mary. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 9:00 AM - 1 PM at Boelter-Eastgate Funeral Service, 200 W. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, Friday from 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM at St. Vincent's Care Center, and 3 - 9:00 PM at Boelter-Eastgate Funeral Service where a rosary and vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Christine Senger was born on September 23, 1909, in Emmons County, North Dakota, the daughter of Lorenz and Marion (Schweitzer) Senger. She grew up on the family farm near Hague, North Dakota, where she attended school.

On October 13, 1930, Christine married Paul B. Schumacher at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hague. They farmed north of Zeeland until retiring in 1967. On October 4, 1967, they moved to Bismarck. In 1990, Christine entered Marillac Manor and in 1991, she entered St. Vincent's Care Center.

She was a member of the Altar Society at St. John's Church in Zeeland and Church of St. Mary in Bismarck. Christine enjoyed gardening, playing cards, baking, cooking, and traveling, where she made two trips to Rome, Italy.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Clara and Eugene Lacher, Ann and Jerome Houn, and Doris Thomas all of Bismarck; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Leo and Carol of Menoken, Tony and Theresa of Bismarck, Bill and Mary of Hillsboro, Thomas and Alice of Zeeland, and James of Tempe, Arizona; one daughter-in-law, Betty Schumacher of Bismarck; forty-three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; sixty-five great-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Christine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul in 1975; one son, Ray in 1990; one grandson, Deon Schumacher in 1993; three brothers; and four sisters.

Eugene "Bus" Leary

Eugene "Bus" Leary, 87, died November 4, 2003 in a local hospital.

Services will be held at 10 AM Friday at the Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with the Most Rev. Paul Zipfel, Bishop of Bismarck presiding and the Rev. Thomas Kramer and others con-celebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck, with military rites provided by the VFW Post #1326.

Visitation will be 4-8 PM Wednesday and 9 AM-12 Noon Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. A rosary will be held at Marillac Manor, Bismarck, at 2 PM Thursday with visitation one hour prior to the rosary at the Manor. Visitation will continue from 3-6 PM Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service. A rosary will be held at 7:30 PM at the Church of the Ascension Thursday evening.

Eugene "Bus" Leary was born July 24, 1916 at Marmarth, ND to Raymond and Katherine Leary. He was raised and educated in Marmarth, and graduated from Marmarth High School in 1934. Bus served in and was a lifetime member of the Civilian Conservation Corp.

Bus came to Bismarck in 1936 and married Bertha Bredy at Scranton, ND on July 26, 1939. He was an Air Force Veteran and served during WWII.

Bus was employed by National Food Stores, which was a retail grocery. In 1949, he opened the first Super Valu store in Bismarck, which was located at the corner of Broadway and 7th Street. He served as director and president of the ND Association of Food Retailers. Among the many awards he received from Super Valu Stores, Inc. Headquarters, was the Retailers National Good Government Award in 1977.

With his abounding energy and enthusiasm for serving within the community, Bus was a founding father, a member, and often a leader for many of Bismarck's clubs and organizations. His love of the Bismarck community prompted him to run for mayor, and with immense enjoyment of the task before him, he dutifully served the city as a full time mayor for eight years, from 1978 until 1986. Other civic groups and memberships include Bus acting as a director; then president of the Bismarck Chamber of Commerce in 1965; director of the National Liquor Dealers Assoc.; director of the ND Milk Stabilization Board; director of First Bank from 1965 until 1981; the ND Automobile Club A.A.A. Board of Directors for 20 years; the first president of the Golden Kiwanis Club; and the past president on the DRIS Board. Bus also served on the ND Trade Commission; was volunteered by the ND Governor to serve as Regional Chairman on the Heritage Foundation Building Fund Drive; worked to pass the One Cent City Sales Tax; received the Distinguished Service Award from Bismarck State College; the President of the "All Veterans Memorial" fund drive for the building located on the state capitol grounds; and served as chairman of the Original Fund Drive for St. Mary's High School "BACEF" for Catholic Education. When serving as mayor, Bus and his wife, were invited to the White House by President Ronald Reagan on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1982, to meet and have dinner with the President of Ireland. He was the only mayor from the US invited.

Eugene was a charter member of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, a life member of Knights of Columbus, Elks, United Commercial Travelers, American Legion, Eagles, and ND Stockman's Club.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Bertha, Bismarck, ND; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Mike and Michelle Leary, Bismarck, ND, Ken Leary, Tacoma, WA, and Bill and Linda Leary, Albuquerque, NM; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patty and Frank Schmaltz, Shakopee, MN, Jacque and Allen Gillette, Twin Falls, ID and Kathy Leary, Federal Way, WA; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Bismarck Area Catholic Education Fund or St. Vincent's Care Center.

Arthur "Bud" Jacobson

Arthur John (Bud) Jacobson, 40, died October 31, 2003 of a fatal gunshot wound.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2:00 PM at Boelter-Eastgate Funeral Service, 200 W. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM, Sunday from 1 PM to 9 PM, and Monday from 9 AM to 2 PM at the funeral home.

Arthur was born October 20, 1963 at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, the son of Adele (Molly) Murray and John M. Jacobson. He was raised in Wing, ND and the surrounding areas, moving to Bismarck in 1981. Bud attended school in Wing and got his GED at Bismarck Junior College. Bud worked for various construction businesses in Bismarck over the years, including Scherr Plastering. He worked with his brother, John, in off hours, doing odd jobs such as roofing, lawn care, snow removal and carpentry work. Bud enjoyed fishing, camping, and cooking, (famous for his strudels). He was considered a McGuyver by his sister, Bonnie; there was nothing Bud couldn't fix. He also had a talent for art and loved to draw.

Bud is survived by his mother, Adele (Molly) Murray, Bismarck; his father, John M. Jacobson, San Diego, CA; two sons, Theodore (Teddy) Jacobson and Ricky Jacobson, both of Portland, OR; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Donalda (Nel) and Tom Sperle, Hazen, Linda and Jeff Moos, Lois and Tom Wolf, and Bonnie (Schnooksie) Murray, all of Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, John (Sonny) and Rabecca (Becky) Jacobson, Bismarck; nine nieces and nephews, Danita Sperle, Iraq, Andrea Sperle, Fargo, Jeremy (J.J.) Jacobson, Bismarck, Melinda Moos, Bismarck, Marie Wolf, Eden Prairie, MN, Thomas Wolf, Bismarck, Christopher Alyea, MT, Kristen Heinle, Bismarck, and John Jacobson, Jr., Bismarck; and two great-nieces, Shayla Sperle, Hazen, and Kyla Alyea, MT. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, and his special friend, Ida Giesinger of Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Alden (Ole) and Lena Olin; his aunt, Muriel Bauer; three uncles, Dick Linden, Alex Seibel, and Donald Flath; and one cousin, Rosemary (Linden) Bach.

He will always be remembered, loved and missed.

Roberta Carter

Roberta Carter, 50, Bismarck, died November 5, 2003, at her home.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 AM at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel in Bismarck. Burial will be at the Edgeley Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 5 - 9 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM.

Roberta Marie Scallon was born on November 28, 1952, in Ellendale, North Dakota, the daughter of Robert and Grace (Johnson) Scallon. She lived with her parents and six brothers and sisters on the family farm near Edgeley, North Dakota. She attended elementary and high school at Monango, North Dakota. She then attended Josef's School of Hair Design in Fargo and Bismarck Junior College. Roberta was currently employed with Service Master in Bismarck. She married Allen Carter in Bismarck.

Left to mourn her death are her children, Angela (Mike) Matson of Ramona, South Dakota, Cody Carter (and fiancée Lori) and Lance Carter, both of Bismarck; her mother, Grace Scallon of Edgeley; her grandchildren, Cailey Carter and twins, Jensine and William Matson; her sisters, Annette (James) Schmidt of Petersburg, North Dakota, Nancy (Karl) Schladweiler of Madison, South Dakota, and Carol (Bruce) Flanigan of Mission Viejo, California; her brothers, Lee (Luanne) Scallon of Mayville, North Dakota, Kenny (Elaine) Scallon of Edgeley, and James (Carol Ann) of Williston; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert.

Her children wanted her to know that they appreciated everything she has done for them. They will cherish all their memories of her forever and will hold her close to their hearts with love forever.
