Dean Reisenauer

Mass of Christian Burial for Dean Reisenauer, 38, of Dickinson is 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Dennis Schafer, celebrating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation is Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary and vigil at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.

Dean passed away Saturday, November 15, 2003 at his home due to a sudden heart attack.

Dean was born September 22, 1965 in Dickinson, ND to Arnold and Rita (Wandler) Reisenauer. He was raised in Dickinson and graduated from Dickinson High School. Dean followed in his father’s footsteps and began working for Fisher Industries as a heavy equipment operator. More recently his work has allowed Dean to travel to several states however, he remained to make Dickinson the place he called home. Dean enjoyed his time with friends and traveling with his Harley. Hobbies included hunting, taxidermy and simply being outdoors. Dean cherished his time spent with family and his daughter, Nicole. His sense of humor will be greatly missed by all.

Dean is survived by his parents, Arnold “Ike” and Rita Reisenauer of Dickinson, daughter, Nicole Blackler of Jamestown, ND; brother, Brian (Dawn) Reisenauer of Dickinson; sister, Brenda (Larry) Sand of Ellsworth, Air Force Base, SD; two nephews, Mathew and Alex Reisenauer. His grandparents precede him in death.

Hattie Urbanec

Hattie Urbanec, 82, of Dickinson passed away on November 15, 2003 at St. Benedict’s Health Center.

Hattie was born March 31, 1921, in Stark County, ND to Joseph and Agnes (Pavlicek) Nadvornik. She was raised and attended country schools in Stark County along with helping her parents on the farm. On October 26, 1943 Hattie married Joseph Urbanec in Dickinson, ND. They lived on a farm near New Hradec for the next 15 years and raised their daughter, Marion. In 1958 the family moved to Dickinson where Hattie worked for St. Benedict’s Nursing Home when it was located on the southside of Dickinson. In 1990, Hattie retired and they continued to make Dickinson their home. She found great enjoyment in cooking and entertaining friends and family. Hattie always made time to watch her favorite TV program Northern Exposure. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, friend and her greatest love was for her granddaughters.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph of Dickinson, daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Ron Antonelli of Prescott Valley, AZ, two granddaughters, Lynette Dukart of Minneapolis, MN, Janel Dukart and grandson-in-law, John Chapman along with soon to be born great granddaughter, Dakota Rose Dukart of Witchta, KS, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and six sisters.

Mary E. Palaniuk

Funeral Services for Mary Palaniuk, 97, of Bismarck, formerly of Belfield, are 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at Belfield Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger Dieterle, officiating. Interment will follow in Belfield Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation is Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.

Mary passed away Saturday, November 22, 2003 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck.

Mary was born February 15, 1906 in Wilton, ND to Joseph and Hatie (Sawyhuk) Kassian. Being raised in the Wilton area she attended country school. In 1925, Mary married Elko Palaniuk, Sr.; together the couple moved north of Belfield and began farming along with raising their family. They moved to Belfield in 1973 at this time retiring.

Mary is survived by her sons, William (Tanya) of Denver, CO, Mitchell W. (Karen) of Bismarck, ND, Elko Jr. (Marge) of Bismarck, ND, Steven (Roberta) of New Leipzig, ND; son-in-law, Vic Krivarschka of Fargo, ND; 15 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, Elko, daughter, Olga Krivarschka, her parents, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Belfield Lutheran Church.

Jodi Zander

Memorial Mass for Jodi Zander, 47, of Dickinson, is 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Father David Morman, celebrating. Inurnment will follow in the Dickinson Mausoleum.

Visitation is Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary and vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.

Jodi passed away Saturday, November 29, 2003 at St. Joseph Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson after a short battle with cancer.

Jodi grew up and attended the St. Patrick's grade school and graduated from the Trinity High School in 1974. She was married to Craig Zander on August 30, 1975 in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Together they have made their home in Dickinson raising their three girls. Jodi worked for a short time as a teller and teachers aid. As the family grew Jodi’s time was spent raising her three girls. She enjoyed working in her yard and home. Jodi was always a perfectionist at what ever she did. She loved keeping everyone and everything organized and well kept. Her greatest love was always for her family who will miss her dearly.

Jodi was a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the P.E.O. chapter AD both of Dickinson.

Survivors include, her husband, Craig; three girls Kristy, Katie and Megan Zander; her mother, Beverly Kolling; and a sister Cindy (Leon) Vetter all of Dickinson.

Her father Gene preceded her in death.

Betty (Gerber) Hammel

Betty (Gerber) Hammel, 81, of Dickinson passed away Wednesday, December, 3, 2003 at her home in Dickinson.

She was born October 29, 1922 at Lefor, the daughter of Michael and Magdalena Dassinger Herold. She grew up and attended the St. Elizabeth Grade School in Lefor. At the age of 17, she moved to Dickinson where she worked at the St. Charles Café. On February 2, 1946, Betty was married to Lloyd Gerber at Dickinson. They moved to the Zander Dairy, where she milked cows for 43 years, raised their own four children and also made a home for her sister, Fran’s children. The Gerber Dairy was the first modern milking parlor in Southwest North Dakota with all four children working on the family farm. Lloyd passed away in June of 1981. Betty was 70 years old when she retired from milking and moved into Dickinson. On December 28, 1995, she was married to Thomas Hammel at Dickinson. He passed away in February of 2001. Betty enjoyed playing cards and family gatherings. She opened her home to anyone and loved them all. She especially loved and enjoyed her grandchildren.

Survivors include: a son, Donald (Julie) Gerber, Dickinson; three daughters: Joyce (Duane) Hinsz, Bismarck, Nora (Jack) Loewen, Apple Valley, MN, and Verna (Dave) Focht, Dickinson; special nieces and nephews: Michael (Delei) Lawrence, New York, Gail Lawrence, Oklahoma, Alan (Lucy) Lawrence, New York; two brothers: John (Pauline) Herold, Lefor and Joseph (Phylis) Herold, Dickinson; a sister-in-law, Victoria Herold, Dickinson; six sisters: Katherine Wanner, Dickinson, Magdalen (Martin) Kuhn, Dickinson, Regina Reindel, Dickinson, Rose (Roy) Carlson, Arizona, Evelyn Herold, Dickinson and Angeline Nuss, Dickinson; 14 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Lloyd and Thomas, three infant daughters: Fern, Francis and Florence; a grandson, Roger Focht, a sister, Frances Lawrence a brother, George Herold; a nephew, Tim Herold and a niece Leatha Lawrence.

Delilas "De" Herbst

Delilas “De” Herbst, 95, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 6, 2003, at the Quality Personal Care in Baker.

She was born January 25, 1908 at Sioux Falls, SD, the daughter of Herman and Nannie (Perau) Korth.

When she was twenty one months old, her parents moved to eastern Montana where she resided the rest of her life.

Her family homesteaded west of Plevna where De attended grade schools in Westmore, Ismay, and the Korth-Carrington school. She attended Plevna High School and graduated with Plevna’s first 4 year high school class in 1928. De attended and graduated from Washington State Normal College in Bellingham, WA, receiving her teaching degree. She then returned to Plevna and taught schools in the area. Delilas married her longtime friend Earnie Herbst on December 27, 1932 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Plevna. They were blessed with a son, Robert Earnest. They farmed and ranched south of Plevna until 1961 when they built a home in Baker. In 1999, De became the first resident of Quality Personal Care—Baker’s first assisted living facility. De was very active in many community groups. She was a member of the 3-in-1 Home Demonstration Club, St. John’s and St. Anthony’s Altar Societies, Catholic Daughters, Democratic Women, to name a few. She was also active in organizations that worked to preserve the early history of Fallon County. Her grandchildren were a great joy in her life and she kept close track of their progress in all that they did.

She loved both writing and receiving letters from all of her many friends and relatives.

Your life was full and long, rest in peace dear one.
You’ll live on in our hearts. We love you and miss you.

Surviving are her son, Robert and his wife Carol; four grandchildren: James (Kim) Herbst and their children Brenden, Colby, Tyla and Kalee all of Parker, CO; Brandon Herbst, also of Parker, CO; DeAnna Herbst (Luke Holestine) and children Brittany, Payton, and Dalton, all of Baker; and Kay (Kevin) Petersen and their children Erika and Kelsey, all of Castle Rock, CO. Preceding De in death were her parents; her husband, Earnie; and her only brother Donald Korth. Visitation will begin Thursday, Dec. 11, from 9 AM until 9 PM at Stevenson Funeral Home, Baker. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, Dec. 12, at 11 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church. A luncheon will be served immediately following the mass.

Burial will be at the Herbst family lot in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Plevna after the luncheon.

Stevenson Funeral Homes, Inc. of Baker and Ekalaka is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard A. Bennett

Richard “Dick” Arlen Bennett 73, of Dickinson passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at his home in Dickinson.

Dick was born September 8, 1930 in Bristow, OK to M. Harlan and Rowena Maude (Ament) Bennett.

He was raised and attended schools in Depew, OK later attending high school in Lawton, OK. Dick married Ruth Verlene Lee on September 8, 1948 in Lawton, OK. Dick enlisted in the US Navy in 1947 and was honorably discharged in 1950. He worked for the Oklahoma Public Service Company until 1956. Dick worked as an electrician in various towns in Oklahoma and Texas. In 1970 he started his National Park Service career at Big Bend National Park in Texas. In 1972 he went to work as a maintenance foreman at Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. Dick and his family moved to Medora in 1974 where Dick became the facilities manager for Theodore Roosevelt National Park until his retirement in 1989. Dick was the School Board President in Big Bend National Park in Texas. He was a member of the Lions Club at Big Bend National Park, Elks Club of Dickinson and was a National Park Service Target Shooting Champion in Devils Tower, Wyoming.

Dick found enjoyment working with computers to the extent he opened Bennett Electronics after retiring. His special love was for his family, grandchildren and two dogs, Bitsy & Chewey.

Richard is survived by his wife, Verlene and children, Ricky (Gayle) Bennett of Lena, MS, Karen (Keith) Wolf of Gladstone, ND; four grandchildren, Eric Bennett and Wendy Bennett both of Pelahatchie, MS, Kassidy Wolf of Gladstone, ND and Krystal Reid of Forest, MS; six great grandchildren and a sister, Dorothy Kuykendall of Etoile, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert and a daughter, Anita “Susie” Bennett.

Margaret Schmidt

Margaret Schmidt, age 88, Dickinson passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. She was born October 14, 1915 at Richardton, the daughter of Simon and Katherine (Weiler) Boespflug. She grew up in Richardton and rural Mott where she worked on the family farm. Margaret was married to Mike Schmidt at St. Placidus Catholic Church, rural Mott, ND on November 17, 1936 and just had their 67th anniversary. Together they raised their family on a farm Northeast of Mott. They retired in 1979 when they built a home and moved into Mott. In 1989 they moved to Dickinson where they had made their home since. Due to failing health, Margaret entered the St. Benedict’s Health Center in 1994. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary as a Gold Star Mother. While living in Mott, she was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church, Mott and the Ladies Guild there. Later, she was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton. Margaret enjoyed sewing, baking, gardening and caring for her children and grandchildren.

Survivor include her husband, Mike of Dickinson; three sons: Donald (Joan) Schmidt, St. Louis, MO, Melvern (Linda) Schmidt, Richardton, and James Schmidt, Dickinson; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Virgil Schmidt; a daughter, Vernice Frank; a daughter-in-law, Margorie Schmidt; three brothers and three sisters.
