Elizabeth Ann Madison
Funeral Services for Elizabeth Ann Madison, 50, of Killdeer are Monday, September 8, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel. Burial will be at a later date.
Visitation is Sunday, September 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson.
Elizabeth passed away Monday, September 1, 2003, at her home in Killdeer, ND.
Elizabeth was born to Gilbert and Mildred (King) Madison on January 26, 1953. She grew up and attended school in Twinsbury, OH. She was married to Gary Gould in Charlotte, Virginia. She stared her own baking business, where she baked for large groups. She also had her own frame shop, which she operated out of her home. She moved to Killdeer where she made her home and worked for KMM and Hilltop Home of Comfort. Elizabeth was a very private person. She enjoyed drawing and sketching with her free time. She enjoyed animals especially her cats.
Elizabeth is survived by two sisters, Penny (Ken) Tookey and Juanita Blankenship of Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Gilbert.
Agnes Halstead
Agnes D. Halstead, 87 of Dickinson passed away Sunday, September 7, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson.
Agnes was born on June 22, 1916 on the family ranch in the Gorham area, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Martin) Kessel. She grew up and attended schools in the Belfield area. Agnes was married to Gerald Halstead in Glendive on June 22, 1941. They made their home in Glendive where they raised their son, David. Agnes worked in the Healthcare industry for many years. She worked in Glendive and Salem, OR, later moving back to Glendive. Agnes moved to Dickinson to help care for her mother and has remained here since. She operated the Rancher Motel for several years before her retirement. Agnes loved to can fruit and vegetables which she shared with her friends and family.
Survivors include, her son, David (Rita) Halstead, Dickinson, two grandchildren, Shereen (Mike) McMahon and Kim (Dave) Blascoe, two great-grandchildren, Jordyn McMahon and Madison Blascoe; two brothers, Alois (Dorothy) Kessel, Dickinson, Nic (Goldie) Kessel, Belfield; four sisters: Mary Olinger, Richardton, Angeline (Harry) Romine, Agatha (Floyd) Higgins, and Florence Boelow all of Portland, OR.
Five brothers, Fred, Ignatios, George, Leo and Richard, preceded her in death.
Edith Sadowsky
Mass of Christian Burial for Edith Sadowsky, 78, of Dickinson, is Friday, September 12, 2003, 1:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Jerry Kautzman, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Visitation is Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a rosary being said at 7:00 p.m.
Edith passed away Monday, September 8, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center.
Edith was born August 5, 1925, in Dunn County, ND to Frank J. and Caroline (Lipenski) Sadowsky. She was raised in Dunn and New Hradec areas attending school in New Hradec and Model High School in Dickinson. Edith enjoyed visiting with friends and family and her time caring for others by baby-sitting or house keeping. She also enjoyed old time music and embroidery. In earlier years, she enjoyed drawing.
Edith is survived by her brother, Richard (Emma) Sadowsky of Dickinson, sister-in-law Mildred Sadowsky of Rapid City, SD and ten nieces and nephews. Her parents, brothers, Laudie and George, sisters, Virginia and Gladys preceded her in death.
Preston Freidt
A Memorial Service for Preston Friedt, 51, formerly of Dickinson, is Thursday, September 18, 2003, 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Dickinson, ND with Pastor Patricia Higgins, officiating.
Visitation is Wednesday, September 17, 2003 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.
Preston passed away September 8, 2003, in Temecula, California.
Preston was born on December 13, 1951, in Williston, ND to Frank and Maxine (Murray) Freidt. He grew up and attended schools in the Watford and Belfield areas. He enlisted into the United States Navy in 1969, serving two tours in Vietnam and being honorably discharged in 1975. Preston worked in the Oil and Gas Industry, which took him to many western states along with driving truck for Koch Oil. Preston later went to work for Tenneco Oil, which was bought by Exxon while in the Dickinson area. Preston married Amiee (Heim) Bachmeier in Dickinson on September 24, 1988. Together they moved to Gillette in 1992 and in May of 2003, moved to Green River, Wyoming where Preston began working at Shute Creek Gas Plant. He had a love for the outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting and woodworking. The pride of his life was his three granddaughters.
Preston is survived by his wife, Amiee Freidt of Green River, WY; son, Cpt. Jason Freidt (Bobbie Hoessle) of Ft. Stewart, GA; three daughters, Cherie (J.T.) Lauridsen of Temecula, CA, Shonda (Grant) Feddema and Gerri Ann Bachmeier, all of Denver, CO; a sister Vici Murphy of Hillsboro, KS and three granddaughters, Maggie Lauridsen and Ashlyn and Ivy Feddema. His parents preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers memorial are preferred to the local chapter of the Red Cross.

Ralph Rustad
Ralph Eugene Rustad 81, of Ollie passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2003, at the Fallon Medical Complex. He was born March 21, 1922 at Beach, North Dakota, the youngest son of George & Lola (Opperman) Rustad. Ralph grew up and attended schools in Ollie, graduating from the Ollie High School in 1939. He attended Eastern Montana College at Billings. With the drought and depression in Eastern Montana, he spent his summers fighting forest fires in the Missoula area. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to the 91st division of the Fifth Army, commonly known as the Powder River Division. He completed basic training at Medford, Oregon and special training in the Eastern Oregon Desert. Ralph entered World War II, serving in the North Africa, Sicily and Italian campaigns as a member of an antitank company. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart along with inclusions in several unit citations. Ralph was honorably discharged in November of 1945. He returned to the Ollie area to farm with his Dad. Ralph and Ellen Gustafson were united in marriage March 3, 1946 on the family farm south of Baker. To this union, two sons, Keith and Brian were born. In the fall of 1946 they bought a small farm south of Ollie and Ralph’s farming and ranching career began in earnest. Ralph loved to trade horses and real estate and over the next twenty years he bought and sold three more ranches. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and in 1967, ventured into the fishing camp business in Northern Canada, but sold it six years later. Ralph bought another ranch near Whitehall, MT. They spent their winters at Whithall and summers at Ollie. In 1994 they sold the Whitehall ranch and returned to the Ollie and Baker area until his death. Ralph was active in the Baker Sportsman Club, the American Lutheran Church and served on ASCS committees and BLM advisory boards. Survivors include his wife, Ellen of 57 years; two sons, Keith and Brian of the Ollie-Carlyle area. His parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Hubert, preceded Ralph in death.
Gloria Howell

William (Bill) Bohle
William (Bill) Bohle, 82, of Baker, passed away Friday, September 19, 2003 at the Fallon Medical Complex. He was born December 17, 1920, at Plevna the son of Frederick and Barbara (Schlecht) Bohle. Bill grew up and attended school in Plevna and served in the U.S. Navy during WW II during the years of 1944-46. He married Mary E. Lausch on May 25, 1947 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Plevna. Bill was employed by the Montana State Highway Department for almost 32 years; retiring in 1978. He was active as a Boy Scout leader and was also a member of the American Legion. Bill served in local Military Firing Squad for numerous years. After his retirement, Bill kept busy by helping and doing odd jobs for others. One of Bill’s greatest pleasures was meeting with his “coffee buddies” every day. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Rudolph Bohle; and two sisters, Anne (Bill) Singletary and Dorothy (Otto) Schmidt. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Mary; two sons: Jack (Donna) of Bellingham, WA and DuWayne of Castro Valley, CA; a daughter, Joann (Butch) Bergstrom of Sheridan, WY; two brothers: Henry (Mae) of Plevna and Ernie (Barb) of Billings; two sisters: Alvina (Ken) Wiman of Baker and Nettie (Bill) Wilkens of Nauvoo, IL; five grandchildren: Holly (Tom) Gordian of Dickinson, ND, Beth (Ron) Carpenter and Cheri (Sean) McFall, all of Bellingham, WA, Bo Bergstrom and Jay Bergstrom, both of Sheridan, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, Bill’s family has requested that donations be made to the American Lutheran Church in Baker. A Prayer Service will be held on Monday, Sept. 22, at 7 PM at the Stevenson Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 11 AM at the American Lutheran Church, Baker. Burial will follow at Bonnievale Cemetery. Military rites will be presiding at the cemetery. A luncheon back at the church will be served following the graveside services. Stevenson Funeral Homes, Inc. of Baker and Ekalaka are in charge of the arrangements.
Vernon J. Schiff
Vernon J. Schiff, 63, of Gladstone passed away September 29, 2003 at Medcenter One, Bismarck.
Vernon was born on his grandfathers’ farm south of Richardton on November 30, 1939 to Joseph and Emma (Kelsch) Schiff. He was raised in the Richardton area attending school there and graduated from Mott High School in 1957. Vernon then went on to Dickinson Teachers College for a year. On July 18, 1964 he married Carlene Grosz in Mott, ND. He began working as a salesman in western North Dakota and later several different ranches. His love for the Appaloosa Horse breed started as a young man and continued through out his life. Vernon refered to his grandchildren as his bummers, which were his pride and joy. His favorite times were shared with his family all together at the farm being “PA”.
Vernon will be greatly missed by his wife, Carlene of Gladstone, two daughters, Stacey (Brian) O’Hara of Dickinson, Lisa (Neal) Dukart of Elgin; a son, Ryan/Punk (Amy) Schiff, Gladstone; two brothers, Ken and Gary Schiff both of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren, Megan, Morgan and Micah Dukart, Keaton, Kendall and Kooper O’Hara; one sister, Boni (Richard) Solberg of Dickinson, ND.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Ron Schiff.
Harry S. Gustafson
Funeral Services for Harry Gustafson, 89, of Halliday are Wednesday, October 15, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Timothy Voth, officiating. Interment will follow in Halliday Cemetery.
Visitation is Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.
Harry passed away October 11, 2003 at Knife River Care Center in Beulah.
Harry was born June 5, 1914, in Halliday, ND to Oscar and Alice (Johnson) Gustafson. He was born and raised on the family homestead in Halliday.
On June 7, 1945, in Seattle, WA Harry married Alpha Dahl of Mandan. Together they made their home on the family farm near Halliday. Harry sold seed corn for over 50 years. Harry belonged to the following organizations: American Hereford
Association, ND Stockmans Association, Halliday Senior Citizens (He enjoyed going to the meals and the fellowship received there), St. Luke’s Home Board, Badlands Ministry Board.
He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Halliday and attended Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Beulah. Harry loved to ride horses, raise Hereford cattle and enjoyed the outdoors. His faith was most important to him. He was instrumental in the activities of the New Life Bible Camp.
Harry is survived by his three sons: David (Vicki) Gustafson of Baker, MT, Robert (Patricia) Gustafson of Casper, WY, and Mark Gustafson (Special Friend, Barbara Elmquist) of Halliday; a daughter, Ruth (Dale) Backstrom of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; ten grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. His parents; wife, Alpha; brother, William; and sister Helen preceded him in death.
