Pauline Ehlis
Mass of Christian Burial for Pauline Ehlis, 84, of Dickinson will be Thursday, August 7, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson with Father Dennis Schafer celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Dickinson
Visitation is Wednesday, August 6, 2003, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a rosary being said at 7:00 p.m.
Pauline passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2003, St. Benedict’s Health Center.
Pauline was born June 1, 1919 in Dickinson, ND to Max and Minnie Hecker. She grew up and attended country schools in Stark County. On October 21, 1940, she married John H. Ehlis in New England. Together the couple farmed seven miles NE of Dickinson where, they raised their son, Herman. In 1978, they retired and moved into Dickinson and made their home here since. Pauline enjoyed listening to old time music, playing according and keyboard, cooking and watching cooking shows. She loved to be with her family and spending time with her grandson, Nathan.
She will be missed by her son, Herman (Carlotta) Ehlis of Dickinson and grandson, Nathan Ehlis of Dickinson. Her parents precede her in death, husband, John, one brother, and two sisters.
Linda D. Stieg
Linda Diane Stieg, 53, of Ekalaka, Montana passed away August 11, 2003 at Dahl Memorial Hospital in Ekalaka after a courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. She was born on November 23, 1949 at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, Montana the only daughter of William H. & Wilma (Boggs) Stieg. Linda attended her early years of grade school at Medicine Rocks rural school. After the family moved to Ekalaka in 1961, she attended Ekalaka Elementary School and Carter County High School. Linda was married to Tony Nies and to this union was born a son, Ryan Allen. Linda & Tony were divorced several years later. Linda worked at hospitals in towns in which she lived. When she moved to Wyoming she worked in Real Estate and other ventures, eventually establishing a vintage clothing business with her partner, Joe Bush. They also operated this business in Colorado and California. Linda returned to Ekalaka in January of 2001, where she has made her home since. She continued to be active in business via telephone and internet. Linda enjoyed visiting with family and friends, doing computer work and studying health topics. Linda was preceded in death by her son, Ryan Allen Nies; her father William H. Stieg. She is survived by her mother, Wilma of Ekalaka; Special friend, Joe Bush of Torrance, California; her four brothers, Duane & Diana Stieg of Miles City; Tom & Kathy Stieg of rural Ekalaka; Terry & Debbie of Ekalaka; Walter & Kathy Stieg of Billings; nieces, Thomasene (Jeff) Hill, Jessica (Shane) Orcutt, Tana, Ann & Lisa Stieg; Theresa Stieg; nephews, Bob (Magen) Stieg; Clayton & Mike Stieg; Ryan, Aaron & Tyler Stieg; great-nieces, Natalie Orcutt, Kender & Madison Hill; great-nephew, Payton Stieg. Funeral Services will be Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 PM at the Ekalaka Bible Church in Ekalaka. Viewing will begin on Friday, Aug. 15, from 10 AM to 7 PM at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Ekalaka. Cremation will follow the services. A reception will be held in the church basement Fellowship Hall after the funeral service. Stevenson Funeral Home of Baker and Ekalaka in charge of the arrangements.
Delila "Lila" Smith
Delila M. “Lila” Smith, 88 life long resident of the Baker area passed away Thursday, August 14, 2003 at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. She was born Southeast of Baker in the Bishor area, the daughter of Eddie E. and Anna Jannett (Nassett) Celander on February 7, 1915. Lila and her brothers attended the Prairie Rose School. Her father passed away when she was only 11 years old which left her and her brother Eddie to do farming and help their mother in any way they could. On July 4th 1951 Lila married Russell “Smitty” Smith in Lewistown, Montana. They lived in Nashua for a short time before moving back to Baker to make their home. Together Lila & Smitty opened the Bake Shop making the best homemade pastries around; they did this for 11 years. Lila loved to visit with family and friends, and always had a big garden. She was preceded in death by her husband “Smitty” in 1992, her parents, four brothers, Eddie, Harley, Jim and one infant brother. Lila is survived by her son Dale Smith of Ramona, CA; and very special daughter-in-law Peggy Smith of Baker; two step-children Elaine Schorsch of Federal Way, WA; James (Brenda) Smith of Midland, MI; two sisters Helen (Bud) Hetland of Bowman, ND; Jannett Roberts of Wilber, WA; two brothers, Bill (Diane) Peterson of Bozeman, MT; Lawrence Peterson of Avondale, AZ; sister-in-law Vivian Celander of Baker; numerous nieces and nephews.
Kay Splichal
Funeral Mass for Kay Splichal, 41, Dickinson, will be Thursday, August 21, 2003, at 10:00 am in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Dennis Schafer celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson
Visitation will begin Tuesday, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. followed by a rosary at 7:00 pm in the Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm followed by a rosary and vigil at 7:00 pm. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel and continuing on Thursday until one hour before service at the chapel
Kay passed away August 16, 2003 at St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck. She ended her 16 year battle with Lupus on Saturday when she joined her earthly father on his birthday with their heavenly father. Kay was born December 17, 1961 at Dickinson, the daughter of Ludwig E. and Ann (Schroeder) Kadrmas. She grew up and attended schools in Gladstone. Kay graduated from Trinity High School in 1980. On November 20, 1980 she was married to Ken Splichal at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson. They continued to make Dickinson their home where they raised their two sons, Mitch and Brent. Kay was very talented in so many ways and loved to organize, decorate and have the family gatherings. She enjoyed camping, fishing, playing the organ and piano, drawing, painting, ceramics, playing cards – especially Russian Rummy. Kay was a noted perfectionist, always seeing to the smallest detail. She always followed her boys in sports as well as her nephews and nieces. She enjoyed making people happy. A special event was held on each Thursday when she would get together with her friends for lunch. Kay was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and taught CCD and Bluebirds. Survivors include her husband, Ken, Dickinson; two sons, Mitchell Lee and Brenton Michael both of Dickinson, mother, Ann Kadrmas, Dickinson; eight brothers: Gordon R. (Pamela) Kadrmas, Dickinson, Galen N. (Clara Hanel) Kadrmas, Dickinson, Alan P. (Carleen) Kadrmas, South Heart, Chet B. (Sandie) Kadrmas, Dickinson, Joel H. (Cheryl) Kadrmas, Dickinson, Ludwig, Jr. (Mary Ann) Kadrmas, Dickinson, Bruce B. Kadrmas, Dickinson, Tracy (Becky) Kadrmas, Missoula, MT; two sisters, Linda Stockert, and Lisa Kadrmas both of Dickinson; 26 nieces and nephews and 7 great-nieces and nephews.
Her father, two nieces, Kay Lynn and Samantha, and all her grandparents preceded her in death.
Adolph Burkhardt
Adolph Burkhardt, 88, of Dickinson passed away on Monday, August 18, 2003 at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center.
He was born March 13, 1915, north of Hebron to Rudolph and Karoline (Schnaidt) Burkhardt. He was raised in the Hebron and Dickinson areas along with attending school in Waheton for welding and carpentry. On December 16, 1945, Adolph married Jorine Gudrin Frafjord. Together the couple ranched southwest of Medora until 1977, at which time they retired and moved to Medora. In 1997, they made their home in Dickinson. Adolph was a member of the Elks. board member of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation and President of the Medora Grazing Association.
He will be missed greatly by his wife of 57 years, Jorine, of Dickinson, two sons, Garret (Kris) of Dickinson, Barry of Centerville, UT; two daughters, Sharon (Ron) Berndt of Snyder, TX, Peggy (Mike) Scanson of Livingston, MT; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister Ida Dunford of Virginia Beach, VA.
His parents, six sibilings and one great grandchild preceded him in death.
Bette Howard
Funeral Services for 76 year old Bette Howard, of Dickinson, are scheduled for 2:00 pm MDT at Evangelical Bible Church, 2891-5th Avenue West, Dickinson.
A graveside committal service will be at 7:00 pm MDT at Dawson Memorial Park, Glendive, MT.
Bette passed away Thursday, August 14, at her home in Dickinson.
Bette was born on June 6, 1927, the daughter of George and Olga (Ortman) Boese in Glendive, Montana. She grew up and attended school in Richey, where she also graduated from high school. She attended Colorado Women’s College for one year. Bette was married to William A. Howard on November 1, 1946 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. They moved back to Richey where they farmed and raised their family. After William’s death in 1963, Bette moved to Dickinson with her 5 sons, where she attended Dickinson State Teachers College and received her teaching certificate. She taught Jr. High geography for many years in the Dickinson School system, retiring in 1993.
Bette was an advocate for women living independently. She volunteered for the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis center for a number of years.
She enjoyed all types of needlework crafts and co-owned and operated the Lady Bug Corner craft store for several years. She enjoyed studying the Bible and taught Sunday School for children and adults, as well as Good News Clubs. Her strong faith in Christ was shared with many, and her concern and support for her children and grandchildren was foremost.
Bette also enjoyed singing. She was a member of the St. Cecelia Music Club and Sweet Cecelias quartet.
Survivors include, five sons: Dennis (Ruth) Howard, Bismarck, Nathan (Joliene) Howard, Glendive, Joel (Betsy) Howard, Meridian, ID, Philip Howard, Bozeman, MT, and Jon Howard (Cecile Marie), Long Valley, NJ; seven grandchildren, Wade (Kerri) Howard, Derric, Ian, Mitzi, Abbey, Billie, and Gabriel Howard; three great-grandchildren, Isaac, Levi, and Luke Howard; a sister in law Rose (Pat) Patterson, Glendive, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Richard.
Memorials may be directed to the charity of one’s choice.
Albert Mischel
Albert Mischel, 85, Dickinson passed away August 22, 2003 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dickinson. He was born January 23, 1918 at Dickinson, the son of John and Rose (Krank) Mischel. He grew up and attended a country school northeast of Dickinson. After his father’s death, Albert stayed and helped on the family farm. On January 21, 1942, he was married to Magdalen, “Maggie” Reis at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bismarck, ND. They farmed north of Gladstone before moving to Bismarck. In 1965 they moved to Los Angeles where Albert worked as a maintenance foreman for many years and they managed apartment buildings. Albert and Maggie returned to Dickinson in 1990 where they retired and made their home. Albert enjoyed playing musical instruments. In his early years, he played for many Saturday night dances. He was a gifted repairman and could fix anything mechanically. Albert loved his family and getting together with his grandchildren. He enjoyed his daily coffee social wherever he was.
Survivors include three sons: Don (Vicki) Mischel of Santa Maria, CA, Duane Mischel of Bismarck, ND and Bob (Beth) Mischel of Thornton, CO; three sisters: Rose (Lowell) Schiltz, Dickinson, Barbara (Arnold) Rummel, Dickinson and Escher Wendorf of Bemidji, MN; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
His wife; a daughter, Linda Mischel; three brothers: Benjamin, Edward and Florian; and two sisters, Tillie Sickler and Regina Sickler preceded him in death.
Allen Klungtvedt
Allen “Swede” Klungtvedt, 84, passed away on Friday, August 22, 2003 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson.
Allen was born April 25, 1919 at Berthold, ND, the son of Anton and Christina Ness Klungtvedt. He grew up and attended schools at Berthold. Allen was inducted into WW II on March 27, 1941 and served in the US Army. He served at Normandy, Northern France & Central Europe and received many awards including: Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal and Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged on October 20, 1945. Allen loved his country and throughout his life was proud to display his patriotism. Allen was married to Lena Sigl at 1947. She left to be with the lord in November of 1953. Allen was married to Gertrude Hartwig in April of 1955. She went to be with the Lord in January 1961. Allen worked for Northwestern Bell from 1945 until 1980 when he retired as a linesmen. After his retirement he spent many enjoyable hours with his friends who were very special to him. Allen was an avid fisherman and bird hunter. His greatest love was for his grandchildren. Allen was a lifetime member of the Eagles, American Legion, KC Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include a son, Ed (Michele) Klungtvedt, Morrison, CO; three daughters: Shirley (Dave Davies) Klungtvedt, Minot, ND, Charlene (Clint) Wagner, Eugene, OR and Linda (Randy Kiefer) Gunwall, Dickinson; stepchildren: Rita (Duane) King Wolf, Dickinson and Wayne (Rochelle) King, Bellevue, NE; five grandchildren: Marcy, Joey, Josh, Aubrey and Dustin; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His wives, Lena and Gertrude, his parents, two sisters and three brothers preceded him in death.
Myrtle "Mert" Finneman
Myrtle M. “Mert” Finneman, 85, of Marmarth, ND, passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. She was born December 29, 1917 at Alpha, ND the daughter of John and Edith (Williamson) Timm. Mert grew up and attended school in Marmarth. During her younger years she participated in the pep squad and also developed a great interest in basketball. Mert married Junior Finneman, they later divorced. To this union were two sons, Gerald and Russell, and a daughter, Sharon. In 1972, she bought Mert’s Café where it stands today, and eventually added the dining room. Mert operated her well-known eating spot for thirty years and truly enjoyed being around the people she served. Having the railroad contract, she was open 24 hours a day. Among her many interests were dancing, a fascination with owls, and the color red. Being in the restaurant business, Mert had the opportunity to serve many people and develop many friendships over the years. It was said that she was the type of person that would do anything for anyone in their time of need. Mert used her work to care for many throughout her life. She will be remembered for the caring, generous person she was to her patrons, friends and family. She is preceded in death by two brothers, George & Ray; a sister, Eva Peterson; two grandchildren and a great-grandson. She is survived by two sons: Gerald (Shirley) Finneman of Coarsegold, CA and Russell (Jean) Finneman of Crawford, NE; a daughter, Sharon (Gordon Jr.) Rustad of Baker; eight grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
Jenny Gerhart
Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial for Jenny Gerhart, 85, of Dickinson Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church with Father Taras Miles celebrating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, north of Belfield.
Visitation will be on Monday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. continuing on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. followed by a parastas at 7:00 p.m. in the Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel. Visitation will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to Mass at the St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Jenny passed away on August 29, 2003 at her home in Dickinson. She was born on May 27, 1918 in Snow, North Dakota the daughter of George and Katherine (Krivoruchka) Gregory. She grew up and attended schools in Billings County. Jenny was married to John Gerhart on November 23, 1939 at Lake Mills, WI. To this union six children were born. They made their home in western North Dakota and for the last 56 years Jenny has made Dickinson her home. For thirty-five years, Jenny was a waitress and then the baker at Binek’s Café, Sims Café and the Ivanhoe. Even after retirement, she continued to bake for her special customers and family. Jenny enjoyed traveling, visiting with friends and family, attending Ukrainian activities, and listening to old time music. She was a member of the St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church of Fairfield, The St. Anthony Club, Eagles Club, German-Hungarian Club, UCI and the Dickinson Singles.
Survivors include, four sons, John Jr. (Ginger) Gerhart, Great Falls, MT, Bill Gerhart, Merritt Island, FL, Don (Carol) Gerhart, Great Falls, MT and Mike (Shirley) Gerhart, Dickinson, a daughter, Mary (Tom) Gavaghan, Aurora, OH; two sisters, Ann Nordahl, Dickinson, Betty (Cal) Drumm, Davenport, Iowa, a brother, Tony (Helen) Gregory, Lemmon, SD, two sisters-in-law, Josephine Gregory, Fairfield, Ethel Gregory, Vancouver, WA; fifteen grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.
Her parents, three sisters, two brothers and an infant daughter, preceded her in death.
