L. George Cruikshank

Lester George Cruikshank, 75, years old of Ismay passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2003 at his home. He was born on April 18, 1928 the son of Lester and Sarah (Krasky) Cruikshank in Minneapolis, MN. George as everybody new him attended schools in Wayzata, MN. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1946 and worked as a radar repairman and instructor. George was honorably discharged in 1949. He returned to Wayzata where he began carpenter work. George was married to Audrey Straussberg McDowell in Minnesota. Together they raised their four children, Darcy, Joe, Susan and Barbara. He enjoyed hunting and coming to Montana with his brothers. After retiring in Minnesota, George was able to move to a ranch in southeastern Montana where he was able to garden and hunt while taking care of the property and living in the Big Sky State. For the last 12 years he has enjoyed being outdoors and meeting many wonderful friends and neighbors. Neighbors would stop by for a visit, cup of coffee and before long the cribbage board would be out. He especially enjoyed the neighbors and attending the card parties throughout the years.
Survivors include, a son, Joe (Julie) Cruikshank, Billings, MT; three daughters, Darcy (Gary) Veldhouse, Elk River, MN, Susan (Dave) Salmeia, Minneapolis, MN and Barbara Cruikshank and her friend, Linda Rahm, Holoke, MA; four brothers, Archie (Pat) Cruikshank, Minitonka, MN, Tom Cruikshank ,CO, John (Carolyn) Krasky, Minneapolis and Harold Krasky, Mountain Iron, MN; two sisters, Sarah (Bill) Boucher, Rogers, MN and Eunice (Richard) Golfis, Wayzata, MN and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Roger.

Sister Margil Renner

Sister Margil Renner, OSB, of Sacred Heart Monastery, Richardton, died at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck on April 25, following several years of failing health. The Wake Service will be held Tuesday, April 29, 7:00 p.m., and the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, both at the Monastery chapel in Richardton. She will be buried in the monastery cemetery. Presider for the Eucharist is Fr. Boniface Muggli, of Assumption Abbey, with Sr. Marie Hunkler, prioress, presiding at the monastic funeral rites.
Sister Margil (Clara), born on April 3, 1918, was the second oldest of six girls born to Christ and Margaret (Amann) Renner of rural Richardton. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School in Richardton. After the death of both parents in 1932, she entered Sacred Heart Convent in Garrison where she began high school and made her first monastic profession in1937. She attended Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota, and Minot State University in Minot where she earned degrees in elementary and special education.
For thirty-three years she taught primary grades at Catholic schools in Karlsruhe, Fallon, Hague, Garrison, and both Little Flower and St. Leo’s in Minot. Her special interest in students who were physically and mentally challenged prompted her to take advanced studies in CCD special education at Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee, and she interned at several summer camps at St. Coletta’s College in Jefferson, Wisconsin.
In 1974 she left the classroom to devote her skills full time to providing religious special education to persons in the Dickinson area. In 1975, Sister Margil and Brother Bede Baldry founded Camp Re-Creation, a summer religion camp for handicapped persons, hosted at Assumption Abbey in Richardton. She continued as co-director until 1991 when she regretfully resigned for health reasons. But her ministry continued the year round with her beloved "campers" and their parents by letters, visits, and phone calls. She called these favored friends, who numbered in the hundreds, "God’s special saints of our times."
In November, 1999, Sister Margil became a resident at St. Vincent’s Care Center in Bismarck where she volunteered her ministry of prayer and hospitality among the other residents until her death.
She was a board member of the Dickinson Association for Retarded Citizens, and served on the Charity and Justice Commission and the Sisters’ Council of the Diocese of Bismarck. She was the recipient of the 1993 Outstanding Catechist Award for the Diocese of Bismarck, which recognized her notable ministry in calling attention to the spiritual needs of disadvantaged persons.
Sister Margil is survived by her youngest sister, Alice Diede of Lambert, Montana, several nephews and nieces and the Sisters of the monastery. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Emilia Berger, Hildegard Meissner, Emma Bauer, and Margie Zander.

Alvina (Fischer) Allerdings

Alvina Fischer Allerdings, 91, of Baker, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2003 at the Fallon Medical Complex. She was born July 29, 1911 at Hazelton, ND, to Christoph and Sophie Fischer. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Hazelton. Alvina was married to Gus Allerdings, Sept 26, 1947 at Linton, ND. They purchased Gus’s family farm 13 miles S.E. of Plevna. They continued to farm and ranch the home place until Gus’s death in 1976. Both Alvina and Gus were active in the Plevna Baptist Church throughout much of their lives. She continued living on the farm until February of 1993, when she had a stroke and was taken to Bismarck ND, and was in a nursing home until May of 1994. She then moved to the nursing home in Baker until her death. She thought the nursing staff was great in Baker. Alvina also had to make sure the chairs in the dining room were lined up before each meal and after--also for Sunday afternoon church services. While she was on the ranch, Alvina loved the animals, especially the big tom cats. She also enjoyed tinkering in her garden. Those who knew Alvina will always remember her love for peanut M&Ms.;
Those preceeding her in death were her parents; her husband, Gus; two brothers, Fred and August; two sisters, Amelia and Bertha; and a set of twins.
She is survived by a sister, Melita Renschler of Bismarck, ND; six nieces from the Fischer family side: Irene (Manuel) Santos of Heyburn, ID, Linda (Ron) Farron of Burley, ID, Alice Ibling of Billings, Arlene (Lynn) Simmons of Townsend, MT, Shirley (Frank) Vannoy of Greenough, MT, and Kathy Hart of Cathedral, CA; and 4 nephews: Reinhold (Judy) Fischer of Hermiston, OR, Harold Fischer of Pinehurst, ID, Larry Renschler of Minneapolis, MN, and Melvin (Marjean) Allerdings of Spokane, WA.
Funeral Services will take place on Friday, May 2, 2003 at 2 PM at the Plevna Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Plevna Community Cemetery. Refreshments will be served back at the church after the graveside services. Visitation hours will begin Thursday, May 1, from 8 AM until 8 PM. Stevenson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Milo Burwick

Milo Burwick
Milo passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at his home surrounded by his family.
Milo Leroy Burwick was born June 2, 1922, in New England, ND to Richard and Signe (Johnson) Burwick. He attended the Daglum Country School and joined the CCC’s at the age of 15 serving until he was 17. Milo later enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in 1942, touring the European Theatre and holding the position as military mechanic. During this time he traveled through Europe, seeing Northern France, Rhineland, England and Scotland. On November 20, 1946, he married Rosie Tessier in Wibaux, MT. After marriage they moved to Long Beach, CA and worked for Douglas Aircraft, they later moved to Spokane, WA and began working for International Harvester. They returned to Dickinson and together they opened Don-L Drive-In, being the first drive up restaurant in Dickinson. Milo opened the Burwick’s Garage in Dickinson and operated this business until 1976. He was active in farming at this time along with hauling cattle and later milk for many area farmers and ranchers. He purchased the service end of Kruger Well Drilling and formed Milo Burwick & Sons Well Service, which he operated with his sons until the time of his death. Milo was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Elks, VFW, American Legion, National Rifle Association and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was fond of planting trees and starting many shelterbelts around his farm. His greatest love was for his wife, Rosie whom he called Dolly or Honey, his children and grandchildren. Milo was the center of the family and the binding force in keeping everyone together.
Milo will be greatly missed by his wife, Rosie of Dickinson, four sons, Gerald (Eileen) of Dickinson, Dale (Judy) of Dickinson, Dean (Marilyn) of Dickinson, Barry (Lisa) of Lyons, CO; four daughters, Garnet (Ray) Wock of Gillette, WY, Myra (Ted) Klein of Dickinson, Tess (Tom) Ehli of Dickinson, Marlo (Ryan) Nelson of Dickinson; 21 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey (Marvel) of Bismarck, Sidney (Thelma) of Seattle, WA; and one sister, Fern (Lyle) Chaska, of Chaska, MN.
He is preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Casey Wock.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Heartland Hospice, 30 7th Street West, Dickinson, ND 58601.

Martin Setinc

Martin W. Setinc, 86, of Billings, formerly of Baker, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the St. Vincent’s Health Care in Billings. He was born July 10, 1916 at Bear Creek, MT, the son of Martin C. and Magdolina M. (Motich) Setinc. Martin grew up and attended school at Mill Iron. He joined the 3 C’s at the age of 16 before going to work on the Fort Peck Dam. Martin enlisted into the US Army at Butte, MT in 1940. He served in several WW II campaigns and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged at Fort Lewis, WA in 1945. In 1946, Martin married Gwen Seeley at Baker. They then moved to the family place at Mill Iron. Shortly there after, they moved to Baker to raise their family. Martin was employed with MDU for many years until his retirement in the 1978. In 1956, they purchased the Kit Kat and later in 1979, the Tavern. Martin and Gwen divorced in 1991. They then sold the Tavern to daughter Pam and her husband Tom Owens. Martin eventually moved to Billings to make his final home. He enjoyed time spent with Helen and especially the trips to Deadwood and Jackpot. He loved fishing, hunting, cards, and golfing. Martin is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Harry and James Setinc, Andy, John, and Joe Andolshek; and two sisters, Mary Setinc and Katie Reese, niece, Evelyn Buck. He is survived by his three sons: Craig (Brenda) Setinc of Ridgecrest, CA, Robert (Jodi) Schweigert of Kalispell and Kenneth (Bev Peterson) Schweigert of Whitefish; two daughters: Sharon (Arnold) Uecker of Billings and Pam (Tom) Owens of Baker and their mother, Gwen Setinc of Baker; special friend, Helen Uribe of Billings; seventeen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two nieces: Mary (Randy) Smith of Ekalaka and Dorothy (Lyle) Neary of Baker; and a nephew, Marvin (Shirley) Reese of Helena. A Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday, May 7, at 7 PM at the Stevenson Funeral Home. Funeral Services will take place on Thursday, May 8, at 10 AM at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. A luncheon will be served following the service at the Tavern Banquet room. Burial will be at the Beaverlodge Cemetery in Ekalaka after the meal. Visitation hours will begin on Wednesday, May 7, from 8 AM until 9 PM at the Stevenson Funeral Home. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at www.stevensonfuneralhome.com. Dale Horner Sr.

Dale F. Horner Sr., 71 years old, of Ekalaka, Montana, passed away peacefully at Fallon Medical Complex in Baker on May 5th 2003 after a short illness that was only slightly related to his other health issues. He was born on July 8th 1931 in Dover, Minnesota, the son of Benjamin and Laura (Pelofske) Schaffer. At age 5, he moved to the ranch near Ekalaka with his mother and step-father, March Horner, he lived there until 1999 when they moved town. On June 15th 1958 Dale & Yvonne Rilley were married in Ekalaka and had two daughters, Linda & Jaci and one son Dale Jr. Dale helped his step-father, C.K. Putnam with the ambulance and funeral businesses during the late 50’s and early 60’s as well as working a Dahl Memorial and at the Carter County Courthouse during the 80’s. Among Dale’s favorite things to do were hunt, farm, ride horses and work with all kinds of livestock. He also loved to visit with and help out his neighbors, Square dancing and especially to share stories about his kids and grandchildren who he so dearly loved. Dale was preceded in death by his mother and all three fathers, Benjamin Schaffer, March Horner and C.K. Putnam. He is survived by his wife Yvonne of Ekalaka, his son Dale Jr. of Osseo, WI his daughters Linda (David) George of Stevens, PA and Jaci Horner of Ekalaka and the apple of grandpa’s eye his three grandchildren, Randi, Derick and Lucas George of Stevens, PA., also many nieces & nephews.

Laurence D. Lambert

Laurence D. Lambert, 60, of Ekalaka, passed away suddenly at his ranch on Wednesday, May 7, 2003. Laurence was born December 20, 1942 in Miles City, the son of William and Vera (Schnee) Lambert. He grew up and attended school in Ekalaka. In 1960, he enlisted into the US Air Force at Los Angeles, CA. Laurence was honorably discharged in 1964 at Minot AFB, ND. After leaving the service, he began work for various ranchers in Carter County. Laurence married Sandra Jeanne Hatfield in 1964 and to this union were two children, Monty and Monica. They moved to Miles City to work on oil rigs there before moving back to Ekalaka to continue ranching. Laurence and Sandra later divorced. He married Johnella LaBree on September 11, 1970 in Miles City. They had three children: Kola, Kelli, and Larry. Laurence was employed with the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge from 1970 until 1982. They moved to Moorcroft, WY in '82, where he managed an explosives plant near Gillette, until 1994. They then came back to Ekalaka and made their home at the John LaBree ranch. Laurence had a great sense of humor and loved the outdoors. Among his many interests included hunting, fishing, camping and gambling at Deadwood. He loved the time spent with his many grandchildren. The highlight of his last day was the birth of his fourteenth grandchild that morning, beautiful Malainy Lambert. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Laurence is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William "Bill" Lambert. He is survived by his loving wife, Johnella of Ekalaka; two sons: Monty (Gayle) Lambert of Deer Lodge and Larry (Terra) of Moorcroft, WY; three daughters: Monica (Jim) Waisanen of Las Vegas, NV, Kola Kuehn (friend, Mike Clark) of Gillette, WY, and Kelli Lambert (finance, James Donahue); two brothers: Everett (Joy) Lambert of Paso Robles, CA and Norman (Carol) Lambert of Broadus, MT; two sisters: Lois Engel of Rapid City, SD and Phillis (Don) Seaman of Spearfish, SD; fourteen grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation hours will begin Sunday, May 11, from 4 PM until 7 PM and continue Monday from 9 AM until 12 PM at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Ekalaka. Funeral Services will take place on Monday, May 12, at 2 PM at the Carter County High School Gymnasium. Burial will follow at the Beaverlodge Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Parish Hall following the graveside services.

Tony Perzinski

Anton “Tony” Perzinski, 81, of South Heart passed away Saturday, May 10, 2003, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Tony was born September 5, 1921 on the family farm southeast of South Heart to George and Anna Perzinski. He grew up and attended school at South Heart. Tony served in the US Army from 1942 to 1945. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to South Heart to work with his father on the family farm.

On June 27, 1946, Tony was married to the love of his life, Eugenia “Ida” Herauf at St. Pius Church in Schefield, ND. They took over the family farm and raised their six children there. Tony had a great love for his family and farming. He liked going into South Heart to meet with his friends and visiting. His hobbies included taxidermy, woodworking, fishing, hunting, trapping, playing cards and telling jokes. Animals had a special place in his heart. Tony will be greatly missed by his family and for all his laughs, love and joy of teaching of his hobbies to all of his children, grandchildren and playing with his young great-grandchildren

Survivors include his wife, Ida of South Heart; three sons: Arnold (Margaret) Perzinski, Palisade, CO, Clyde (Sandee) Perzinski and James Perzinski, South Heart; three daughters: Karen (Kenneth) Kuntz, Williston, Carla (Harlan) Jirges, Glendive, MT, Antoinette (Kevin) Staiger, Hebron; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six sisters: Eva (Paul) Dvorak, Terri (George) Little, Mary Shaw, Catherine Pirkl, Vicki Twardoski, and Susie Harris; one brother, Bill;. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna Perzinski; four brothers: Joe, John, Mike & Pete Perzinski; four sisters: Dorothy Gagliardy, Betty Vetter and two infant sisters at birth.

Herman Berg

Funeral Services for Herman Berg 83, of Killdeer, ND is Tuesday, May 20, 2003, 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Killdeer with Pastor Aanen Gjovik, officiating. Interment will follow at Killdeer Cemetery with the Ezra Barrows Post #46 having Military Rites.

Visitation is Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel continuing on Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to service.

Herman passed away Friday, May 16, 2003, at Watford City, ND.

Herman was born February 1, 1920 on the family farm So of Watford City to Kristopher and Amanda (Thompson) Berg. He grew up and attended country schools at south of Watford City. Herman enlisted in the US Army on May 5, 1942 and served in the European Theater. Herman came through the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Medal.

Herman was married to Adele Turgi on September 27, 1947 in Watford City and spent the next 55 years together. After a short time in Grand Forks they moved to Watford were Herman began working for the McKenzie Electric Coop as a line supervisor. In 1950 Herman was transferred to Killdeer were he worked until 1984 when he retired. He enjoyed reading, visiting with his friends, attending rodeos and being outdoors. Herman especially loved and enjoyed his family and granddaughters.

Herman was a member of the Killdeer Fire Department, American Legion, which he served on the Drill Teem, the Killdeer Saddle Cub and St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include, his wife, Adele of Killdeer; three sons, Richard, Dickinson, Raymond, Bismarck and Darryl (Diane), Killdeer; two brothers, Sten, Concrete, WA and Kenneth of Dickinson; two sisters, Bernice Berg, Watford City and Esther Skaar, Keene, ND and two granddaughters, Courtney and Brittney.

His parents, two sons, Sherman and DuWayne and a brother, Edward, preceded him in death.

Albert Keller

Mass of Christian Burial for Albert Keller, 77, of Pahrump, Nevada, formerly of Dickinson is Saturday, May 24, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Dennis Schafer, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation is Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a rosary being led by George Keller at 7:00 p.m.

Albert, “Bud” Keller, son of John and Josephine (Koffler) Keller was born July 7, 1925, at Amidon, ND. He attended St. Joseph’s School graduating in 1939 and from Dickinson High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and was honorable discharged in 1946, after serving in China, Burma, and India. He married Connie Eckroth in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson on September 2, 1946. He was a member of the American Legion and German Hungarian Club. His occupation was that of a dry-cleaner working in Dickinson, Bismarck and a number of locations in California, where he was owner-operator of several dry cleaning establishments. He retired in 1987 and moved to Las Vegas, NV.

Albert passed away on December 21, 2002, and is survived by his wife Connie, two sons, Arlen (Vie) Las Vegas, Gary (Maria) Big Bear City, CA and one daughter Jo Ann (Kevin) Duty, Central Point, OR, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, three brothers, George and Edward of Dickinson, Ted of Winterhaven, FL and one sister AnnaMarie Ries of Dickinson.

His parents and one brother, Peter, preceded him in death.

Edward James Wentz

Funeral Services for Eddie “Edward” J. Wentz, 72, of New England, are Monday, May 26, 2003, 9:00 a.m. at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran, New England with Pastor Jerry Erickson, officiating. Interment will follow at Tepee Butte Cemetery, south of New England.

Visitation is Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Edward passed away on May 20, 2003, at his home.

Edward was born February 14, 1931, in Havelock, ND to James and Fredericka (Hoffer) Wentz. He was raised on a farm by Havelock with his parents, attending grade school in New England. Eddie worked road construction most his life and retired from Schwartz Construction in 1993. He enjoyed working on cars and was a great mechanic. He was a member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, New England.

Eddie is survived by three children, Carmela (Steve) Lyman of Andover, MN, Bryan (Nadine) Wentz of Dickinson and Brad Wentz of Pine City, MN; six grandchildren, Jason (Jenny) Lyman of Blaine, MN, Jeremy (Angie) Lyman of Blaine, MN, Joshua (Cassie) Lyman of Andover, MN, Jessica Lyman of Andover, MN, Cassie and Kyle Wentz of Dickinson, ND; two great grandchildren, Dakota and Kylie Lyman of Blaine, MN; a well as numerous nieces, nephews and several close friends. His parents, brothers and sister all preceded him in death.
