Patricia "Pat" Banning

Patricia “Pat” Olson Banning, 78, of Baker, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker.

Pat was born on May 11th, 1924 in Lodgepole, South Dakota the daughter of Earl and Mabel (Chapman) Penor.

She grew up and attended rural schools in the area and graduated from Bison High School in 1942.

She married Henry Olson of Morristown, SD, on June 6, 1942.

They traveled together while Henry was in the service until 1945, when he was discharged. Pat and her mother operated Jackson’s Café while Henry was overseas. Henry and Pat worked on a sheep ranch in 1947.

Then Henry took a job with R.C. Haynes in the John Deere Shop and Pat worked for the Morristown State Park for nine years after that.

In 1959, she began working for the U.S. Post Office in Morristown—retiring after 30 years of service in 1987.

In 1961, they bought a Grocery store. Pat operated the store and a roller rink for many years after. Henry passed away March 1, 1981.

To this union three children were born: Debra Mae in 1959, Ronald Emil in 1960, and David Alan in 1962.

Pat married Duane Banning of Baker in 1987.

Duane passed away on January 19, 1996.

She was a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Past President Post #35 as well as Sarah’s Circle and Hospital Helper past-President.

Pat has many recent fond memories of the time spent with her close friend, Harold.

She will be missed by many friends and family.

Pat is preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Henry and Duane; a sister, Barbara; and two brothers, Roy & Kenneth.

She is survived by her three children: Debra (Bill) Kopetsky of Belle Fourche, SD; Ronald (Jay) Olson of Camino Island, WA and David Olson (Anita Stone) of Rapid City, SD; a brother, Ray Penor of Farmington, NM; two grandsons, Shane & Ty; Special Friend, Harold Jenrich of Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Louie Braun

Mass of Christian Burial for Louie Braun, 77, of Dickinson, is Tuesday, April 22, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at Queen of Peace Parish with Father David Morman, celebrating. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. (CT) at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Military rites provided by Dickinson Veterans Drill Team.

Visitation is Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. led by St. Pius Verein followed by a vigil service at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.

Louie passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2003, at his home.

Louie was born September 4, 1925, in Schefield, ND to Peter and Bridget (Roeder) Braun.

He was raised in the Schefield area, attending school and graduating from High School in 1943.

Louie then enlisted with the Merchant Marines in 1945 serving for three years.

Following he served in US Army from 1948 to 1950, his tour of duty was in the Pacific area in the Army Transport Division.

During his leave he was married to Martha Pribyl on May 9, 1949, in Dickinson.

Together the couple moved to his grandfather and father’s homestead south of Dickinson.

Louie and Martha moved to Dickinson in 1972, and Louie began working for Heiser Oil delivering propane.

In April of 1981, the couple moved to Lake Havasu, Arizona for fourteen years and Louie would still return home to farm during the summers.

In 1995, they returned to Dickinson and have made their home here since.

Louie found enjoyment in fishing, bowling, playing cards at St. Anthony’s Club and traveling.

He was a member of the St. Anthony’s Club, Knights of Columbus and a past member of St. Pius Verein and German Hungarian Club.

Louie is survived by his wife, Martha of Dickinson, his mother, Bridget of Dickinson; three sons, Tim of Salt Lake City, UT, Pete of Dickinson, Dean of Mesa, AZ; five daughters, Brenda (Mike) Obritsch of Billings, MT, Nancy (Doug) Charles of Mount Sterling, KT, LuAnn (Steve) Roberts of McMinnville, OR, Marla Braun of Dickinson, Kimberly Braun of Grafton, ND; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; four sisters, Mildred Heinle of Dickinson, Florence Voris of Lake Havasu, AZ, Sr. Mary Eugene of Mankato, MN and LaVern Rios of Hungton Beach, CA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Peter, three brothers, Henry, Eugene and Ernie.

Jessie Townsend

Jessie Magdalena (Brewer) Townsend, 98, of Baker, passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at the Fallon Medical Complex.

She was born May 11, 1904, the daughter of Jesse and Beulah (Wordell) Brewer, at her grandmother’s home in Camp Crook, SD.

When she was four years old, the family traveled by covered wagon to Sand Hills of Spade, NE, where her father filed on a homestead.

It was a one-room school, with the homemade desks and seats.

Also, attending that school was the Sandoz children of which one of them was the famous writer of Indian stories, Mari Sandoz.

In May of 1918 they returned to Camp Crook, where she attended High School.

On April 16, 1923 Jessie was married to George Townsend at Buffalo, SD.

They resided in the Tie Creek and Camp Crook area until August of 1936 when they moved to Ekalaka which was their home until January of 1986.

They moved to Park View Retirement Complex in Baker on account of George’s ailing health.

George passed away October 22, 1989.

To this union was born Robert, Loyd, Georgetta, and Gary. Robert and Gary met tragic deaths in July of 1963.

Jessie was a homemaker first and always having lived on a ranch in Montana, then living in Camp Crook and Ekalaka.

In Ekalaka, she had High School boys and girls as boarders for several years.

She also worked at Emerson Pharmacy for 15 years. Jessie’s home was always open and welcome to whomever, whenever.

She was a great cook and provided meals for the hospital.

She and George traveled extensively, going to Texas, Arkansas, California, Wisconsin, Idaho, North and South Dakota. They toured through most of Montana.

Jessie is preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; two sons: Robert and Gary; a brother, Ray; and four sisters: Clara, Jennie, Ava, and Hattie. She is survived by a son, Loyd (Phyllis) Townsend of Ekalaka; a daughter, Georgettta (Herb) McCamish of Baker; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Townsend of Baker; thirteen grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will take place on Monday, April 28, at 11 AM at the Ekalaka Bible Church in Ekalaka. Visitation will begin from 1 PM until 8 PM on Sunday, April 27, at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Ekalaka. Burial will take place at the Beaverlodge Cemetery. Stevenson Funeral Homes, Inc. of Baker and Ekalaka are in charge of the arrangements.
