Funeral Services for LaVerne Schuh, 78, of Baker, are Thursday, February 6, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at American Lutheran Church, Baker, MT. Interment will be Friday, February 7, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at Pisgah Cemetery, Gillette, WY.
Visitation is Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel of Baker, MT with a prayer service being said at 7:00 p.m.
LaVerne E. Schuh, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at the SCCI Hospital in Mandan, ND following a long illness.
LaVerne was born April 7, 1924 in Krim, ND the daughter of Jacob and Pauline (Newman) Neuberger. LaVerne grew up and attended school in Krim, before marrying Roy Schuh on April 20, 1947, in Hazen, ND. They moved to Baker in 1965. She was employed at the Fallon Medical Complex for 31 years. After retiring, LaVerne enjoyed volunteering with the Pink Ladies and attending Senior Center events. She was a dedicated member of the American Lutheran Church.
LaVerne is survived by her husband, Roy; three sons: Ronald (Sue) of Dickinson, ND, Donald and Sherald (Betty) both of Gillette, WY; a daughter, LaRay (Kenny) Markve of Gillette, WY; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. LaVern is preceded in death by her parents, two infant children, a brother and a sister.
Doris Stanhope
Funeral Services for Doris Stanhope, 78, of Baker will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 6, 2003 at the American Lutheran Church, Baker. Burial will be at a later date at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
Doris Flor Stanhope passed away suddenly at her home, Monday, February 3, 2003.
Doris was born December 4, 1924 in Marmarth, ND, the daughter of Charles and Rosella Mae (Hughes) Bock. She grew up and attended school in Marmarth and graduated in 1941. She then began teaching there in Marmarth. On May 16, 1942, she married Newton Flor in Ekalaka, MT. Just two days later, Newt was drafted by the US Army for World War II. They then headed for Mississippi for nearly four years, after the war they returned to Marmarth until moving to Baker in 1960. Newton passed away on September 27, 1980. Doris was later married to Donald Stanhope. He passed away in 1998. Over the years, she was very involved with the Fallon Medical Complex-Pink Ladies, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Doris loved reading; she could often be found reading to the residents at the Nursing Home. Doris also enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Center and taking care of Alvina Morton. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress; she loved to crochet and made many beautiful baby blankets & afghans for friends and family. Doris will be remembered by many for the delicious, home baked pies that she provided the community over the years. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Doris is survived by her three children: Susie Evans of Billings, Merri (Don) Beck of Baker, and James Flor of Miles City; a sister, Aileen Carlson of Bismark, ND; ten grandchildren: Susie's children; Tara, Ryan & Michael Wilcken, Merri's children; Andrea & Brandon Buerkle, Michelle (Jason) Moser, Nicholas & Nathan Beck, and Jim's children; Cody & Nicholas Flor and Jared Carlson; and two great-grandchildren: Jonathan Gratwohl and Dawn Wilcken.
She is preceded in death by husbands, Newton Flor and Donald Stanhope and a sister, Leona Swedlund.
Sylvia McCamish
Sylvia McCamish, 98, of Baker died on Sunday, February 2, 2003, at Dahl Memorial Nursing Home, Ekalaka. Funeral Services are Friday, February 7, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Lutheran Church, Baker. Interment will follow in Beaverlodge Cemetery.
Visitation is Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel of Baker.
Sylvia McCamish, 98, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2003 at the Dahl Memorial Healthcare in Ekalaka.
Sylvia was born January 2, 1905 in Alzada, MT the oldest daughter of Thomas and Rosa (Wise) Johnston of Ridgway, MT. Sylvia attended the country grade school and graduated from Carter County High School, Class of 1924. In October of 1924, she was united in marriage to Herbert J. McCamish at Miles City. The first years of their married life they worked for her uncle, John Johnston. They then had a contract rural mail route for four years until they purchased the Carmack place at Ridgway. Here they lived, ranched, and raised their family. They retired in 1969 and moved to Ekalaka to make their home. Sylvia was an avid baseball fan and watched her husband; children and grandchildren participate in the sport. She was also a long time Chicago Cubs fan. She was fortunate to enjoy good health and had never been hospitalized until the age of 92 years; she fell and broke her hip. Sylvia has been a resident of Dahl Memorial Nursing Home since that time.
Sylvia is survived by her sister, Myrtle Yates of Ekalaka; her children: Maxine (Bud) Dally of Pinehurst, ID, Herb Jr. (Georgetta) McCamish of Baker, Tom (Mary) McCamish, Areatha Penn, both of Ekalaka, and Rose Ann (Bill) Harfst of Elizabeth, CO; sixteen grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren and many other relatives.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Sr. in 1975; daughter, Fern Way; sisters: Vera Dyer and Cecil Myles; grandson, Casey Penn; and three son-in-laws: Billy Gergen, Ewald Klevgaard and Leroy "Bud" Penn.

Carl Grieb
Carl F. Grieb, 79, of Ekalaka passed away at Dahl Memorial Health Care on Thursday February 6, 2003. Carl was born in Tacoma, Washington on February 28, 1923 to Arthur and Agnes (Anderson) Grieb. Carl grew up in the Longview, Washington area; he enjoyed spending time on the beach with his grandparents in Rosedale, Washington. Carl and his good buddy, Don Sehmel, dug a 22 foot well by hand and with the $22.00 he earned he bought his first car, a 1931 Ford Roadster. On December 11, 1941 he joined the Navy and spent the next four years aboard ammunition ships in the Pacific. He came home from the Navy and entered into an electrician apprentice program. This experience gave him a life long career that he passed on to his boys. Carl spent 42 years as an Electrical contractor. In 1947 Carl married Gertrude Lee and to this union Janette and Stacy were born. They later divorced. On September 3, 1966 he married Darlene (Stigen) Hoffman and gained six more children. Family was very important to Carl; his mother, sister, and brothers and their families were very dear to him. Carl loved the waters of Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest, boating and fishing was of utmost importance to him. In Ekalaka he enjoyed the hunting, the beautiful countryside and spending time at the Schultz ranch. Carl and his dog Ben spent many hours together as Carl built the bunk house, fruit cellar and fences. He collected guns and took part in muzzle loading events. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and son Robert Hoffman in December of 2002. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Darlene, sons Stacy (Sheryl) Grieb of Everett, Washington; John (Sandy) Hoffman of Santa Maria, California; Patrick (Kerri) Grieb of Sequim, Washington; Rick (Bonnie) Reese of Everett, Washington; daughters, Kristi Molina and Janette Grieb both of Bremerton, Washington; Kandis (Buster) Brewer of Ekalaka. Grandsons, Aaron (Kim) Swanson their children Zach, Kelly & Levi; Michael (Stephanie) Blue their child Trevor; Garrett Brieb, Justin Hoffman, Shane & Michael Grieb, Chris Keithley; granddaughters Amy (Nate) Berg, their children Wyatt, Wade, & Megan Blue; Crystal Boreson, Brandi Brewer, Amber Grieb and many nieces and nephews. Memorial Service will be held Tuesday February 11th 2003 at 10:30 AMat the First Baptist Church in Ekalaka with Pastor Steve DeFord officiating. Stevenson Funeral Homes of Baker & Ekalaka in charge of the arrangements.
Helen Hughes
Helen H. Hughes “Soapy”, 76, of Ekalaka, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2003 at the Dahl Memorial Healthcare. She was born September 21, 1926 in Marmarth, ND, the daughter of Robley and Theo (Ekholm) Rushford. Helen grew up and attended school in Marmarth. She graduated high school and then enrolled into Chilicothe Business College in Chilicothe, MO. After a year of schooling, Helen moved to Michigan where she eventually married Donald F. Hughes on May 25, 1945 at Mt. Pleasant. When Donald finished his military service, they settled in Wyndotte, MI. They moved back to Marmarth in 1952 to purchase the Super-Valu Grocery Store. In 1961, they purchased the Ekalaka Super-Valu. Soon after, Helen purchased & operated the Mainline V-Store for years to come. They retired from the business in 1991. Helen was a very active and vibrant person throughout the years. She enjoyed her work immensely. Helen was very involved with the Eastern Star, Ladies Auxiliary, and Royal Neighbors. She loved to dance and sing and especially watching her grandchildren play sports. Helen is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Donald F. in 1999. She is survived by her son, Donald R. (Toni) Hughes of Ekalaka; her daughter, Deb (Jeff) Shaw of Miles City; her sister, Katherine Christensen of Baker; and her six grandchildren: Damian, Bryan, Chris & Allison Hughes, Tyrel Gentry, and Marlee Shaw.
Helen’s family has requested that Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2525 6th Ave. N, Billings, MT 59101.
Graveside services will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 2 PM at the Beaverlodge Cemetery in Ekalaka.
Louis Jensen
Louis “Louie” Sofus Jensen, 79, of Baker, passed away Friday, February 7, 2003 at the Fallon Medical Complex. He was born August 27, 1923 in Baker, the son of Henry and Johanna (Anderson) Jensen. Louie as he was known always had a keen interest in agriculture. He grew up on the family homestead East of Baker. He moved to Jackson, WY briefly with his father Henry while Henry was working construction in the Jackson are. In 1941, Louie graduated from Jackson Wilson High School. Shortly thereafter, he and his father returned to the family farm. In February 1943, Louie answered our country’s call for service and entered the U.S. Army. While assigned with the 353 rd Search Light Battalion Automatic Anti Aircraft Weaponry, he landed on Omaha Beach with the Normandy Invasion. Louie crossed the whole of Europe while being involved in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns. The end of the war found the 353rd in Czechoslovakia. Louie was honorably discharged on October 23, 1945. He returned to the family farm and on January 25, 1948 he married the Loving Lillian Frieda Schell. To this union there were three children: Joanne, Carol, and Tim. Louie continued farming all his life but also on 1957 joined the Civil Service as an employee of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service. He worked for the SCS for 28 years. His work with Government-assisted agriculture planning and improvement can be seen throughout the Little Beaver Soil Conservation District and includes his contributions. To the South Sandstone project West of Baker. He had a strong belief in helping the producer and aiding in whatever ways he could to achieve that. Louis had a keen interest in local history and enjoyed collecting artifacts related to it. One could always get “the tour” of his office that included antique bottles and Indian artifacts he had found. There are Indian artifacts donated by him in both the Fallon and Carter Co. Museums. By later life he had acquired and excellent collection of points from throughout the area. In 1985 he retired from the soil conservation service and experimented with the then new concept of No-Till farming on his own property. He also enjoyed cutting and polishing stone as a hobby during this period. Louie was someone you could always visit with and who would learn in detail the subjects that interested him most. In February of 1999, Louie’s wife of 51 years, Lillian, passed away from cancer. The following months were very difficult for him. Shortly later, health problems required the care of the Fallon County Nursing Home and later the Wibaux County Nursing where he was residing until his passing from heart failure. All family and friends who knew and loved him will always remember his strength of personality, honesty, and will to do what is right. We wish our loving best as he passes through the next door to another future.
Louie is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lillian; a brother, Earl; and a granddaughter, Jean Ellen Stuart. He is survived by two daughters: Joanne Stuart of Lewistown, MT and Carol (Ray) Elhard of Jamestown, ND; a son, Tim (Nancy) Jensen of Baker; a brother, Harold (Lillian) Jensen of Baker; and five grandchildren
Visitation will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 9 AM until 7 PM at the Stevenson Funeral Home. Funeral Services will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church in Baker. Burial will follow in the Bonnievale Cemetery, Baker.
Anna Ulschak
Mass and Christian burial for Anna Ulschak, 86, of Dickinson will be Saturday, February 15, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson with Father Dennis Schafer celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery in Lefor, ND.
Visitation is Thursday, February 13, 2003, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with a rosary being said at 7:00 p.m. followed by a vigil led by Deacon Ralph Stockert.
Anna passed away on Monday, February 10, 2003 at the St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson.
Anna, a daughter of Nick and Elizabeth (Wehner) Ulschak, was born on July 1, 1916 on the family farmstead in Lefor, ND. She was raised in Lefor and attended country school moving to Dickinson in 1934 and working for Sims Café. Anna’s days were filled with joy from the time shared with her sister, Betty while living together in Dickinson. She enjoyed time spend visiting and the accompaniment of her family.
She is survived by her three sisters, Marie (Edward) Kuswa of Hesperia, CA, Elizabeth Ulschak of Dickinson, Katherine Smiley of Rushville, IN; one brother, Curtis (Betty) Ulschak of Kansas City, MO.
Her parents, one brother, Frank Ulschak, two sisters, Eva Landy and Lena Vogel preceded her in death.
Mary Kudrna
Mary passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2003 at the St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson surrounded by her entire immediate family.
Mary, a daughter of Joe and Mary (Samek) Kostelecky, was born on May 11, 1904, in Symferopol, Russia. She came to the U.S. in 1908 with her parents and lived on a farm 11 miles south west of Dickinson. She married Frank Kudrna on July 14, 1924. She then moved to a farm 3 miles south of South Heart, where she lived until 1961 when they moved to Dickinson and she had lived there since. Into her marriage with Frank, 13 children were born. Mary enjoyed gardening; cooking- everyone loved her chicken noodle soup, baking kolaches, dancing, and old time music. Mary was a most loving and caring mother to her big family. She will always be loved and missed by her surviving family.
She is survived by her five sons; Laudie (Dorothy) Kudrna, Dickinson, ND, Don (Millie) Kudrna, South Heart, ND, Raymond (Shirley) Kudrna, Overland Park, KS, Wayne (Rosalie) Kudrna, Dickinson, ND, Robert (Jeanette) Kudrna, Hettinger, ND; five daughters, Margaret (Frank) Fendrick, Billings, MT, Dorothy (Andrew) Ficek, Dickinson, ND, Eleanore (Vern) Badinger, Spokane, WA, Darlene (Bob) Betchner, Mandan, ND, and Delores (Darrold) Raab, Dickinson, ND; one daughter-in-law, Josephine (Gilbert) Kudrna, Phoenix, AZ; three step-sons, Frank Kudrna, Casper WY, Adolph Kudrna and Edward Kudrna, both of Dickinson, ND; two step-daughters, Rose (Pete) Privratsky and Minnie (Ed) Pirkl, both of Dickinson, ND; three sisters, Alice (Ed) Semerad, Spokane, WA, Emma (Victor) Semerad, Dickinson, ND, and Anna Urbanec, Dickinson, ND, forty-two grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren.
Her husband, Frank, parents, one sister, three brothers, three sons, four grandchildren, one great grandchild, one step-son and one step-daughter preceded her in death.
