Evelyn Kary
Mass of Christian Burial for Evelyn Kary, 90, of Dickinson, is Saturday, January 25, 2003, 1:00 p.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Jim Braaten, celebrating. Interment will follow in St. Edward’s Cemetery, Fayette, ND.
Visitation is Friday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary being said at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.
Evelyn passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at St. Benedict’s Health Center.
Evelyn, a daughter of Charles and Rosalie (Rousseau) McLaughlin was born on January 21, 1913 in Dodge, North Dakota. Evelyn grew up and attended schools north of Golden Valley and then later she attended school in Dodge where she graduated in 1931 from high school. She worked for a short time before attending Dickinson State Teachers College and graduated with her teaching eertificate in 1936. She taught at a country school near Fayette, North Dakota from 1937-1938. Then Evelyn married Valentine Kary on July 11, 1938 in Fayette, North Dakota. She met Valentine at a local country dance. They returned to the Kary farm and Evelyn continued to teach at Country Schools. Evelyn taught religion classes at St. Edward’s for many years, along with holding offices in the Altar Society. She was very active in 4-H and served as a leader. Her family was first and foremost in her life. She worked hard to help maintain the family farm and ranch. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her life. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, her flowers, and decorating her home.
Evelyn is survived by her son, James (Diane) Kary, Prior Lake, MN; six daughters, Janice (Don) Miller, Raleigh, ND, Sharon (Jim) Nelson, Sidney MT, Dorene (Glenn) Strom, Bismarck, ND, Donna (Adrian) Kadrmas, Dickinson, ND, Shirley (Jim) Ortman, Omaha, NE, Diane (Tom) Fischer, Billings, MT; one brother, Charles McLaughlin, Golden, CO; two sisters, Esther Fischer and Lillion (Leonard) Wolf all of Dickinson, ND; 23 grandchilren, nine great grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Valentine, and three sisters.
Earl T. White
Tony Earl White, 67, passed away January 23, 2002 at his home in Ekalaka, Montana. He was born on March 15, 1935 in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Tony and Nellie (Maxell) White. Earl grew up and attended schools in Iowa. He married Rena Rae Taylor, in the spring of 1956 at Buffalo, SD. To this union one son was born, Brett White, and two daughters RoxAnne & Loralee. They later divorced. He later married Mabel Welch in Ekalaka. Earl worked many years as a linotype operator for Tom & Gladys Taylor at the Ekalaka Eagle. Tom often told the story that Earl was one of the best linotype setters there was, this was when they still used lead for lettering in the printing of the paper. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting. Earl is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Mel of Eureka, Montana. He is survived by his daughters, RoxAnne Huffman of Beach, North Dakota and Loralee Schroeder of Elko, NV; his son: Brett White also of Elko, NV; eleven grandchildren; Jamie, Jasalee, Jerica, Jaylun, Jory, Janae all of Elko, NV, JordAnne, Jade, Jayce all of Beach, ND, and Tony and Timothy White of Belgrade, MT; two brothers: Donald White & Leonard White of Onawa, Iowa. Earl's family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation for his friends in Ekalaka and special friend and caretaker, Donna. Memorial Services will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 28th, at 11 AM at the Ekalaka Bible Church in Ekalaka.
Dorothy Pfau
Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy Pfau, 86, of Dickinson is Tuesday, January 28, 2003, 2:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Austin Vetter, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Visitation is Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.
Dorothy passed away on Friday, January 24, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Health Center.
Dorothy, a daughter of Joseph and Hanna (Booke) Beaudoin was born February 21, 1916 in Gaylord County south of Belfield, ND. She grew up and attended schools in Gladstone and Dickinson. She graduated from Dickinson and started working for Northwest Bell in Dickinson as a Telephone Operator and worked there for over 32 years, while raising her family. In 1969, she retired and continued to make her home in Dickinson. She was able to stay in her own home until June of 2002, when she moved in with son, Doug and Carol. She enjoyed traveling with her six sisters and took many wonderful trips. She especially loved to go camping, fishing and hunting with her husband, friends, and family. She loved growing flowers, especially Zinnias, and gardening.
Dorothy is survived by her two sons, James (Eileen) Pfau and Douglas (Carol) Pfau both of Dickinson, ND; five brothers, Wally (Helen) Beaudoin, Dickinson, ND, LeRoy “Pudge” (Jackie) Beaudoin, Bismarck, ND, Kenneth (Monica) Beaudoin, Sand Point, Idaho, and Tom (Penny) Beaudoin, Villa Park, CA, Floyd (Willow) Beaudoin, Grants Pass, OR; four sisters, Dianne ( Rodney) Myers, San Diego, CA, Arvilla Holder, San Diego, CA, Marlease (Fran) Bogner, Beaver Dam, WI, and Marge (Tom) Gunderson, Bismarck, ND, nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Lorne and Lester Beaudoin, and two grandchildren Jeanette Jiles and LeVonne Zern.
Leo Kessel
Mass of Christian Burial for Leo Kessel, 88, of Lisbon, formerly of Belfield, is Tuesday, January 28, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church with Father Shannon Lucht, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery. William C. Blair Post #144, of Belfield, will provide military rites.
Visitation is Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel and 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belfield with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. followed by a vigil service.
Leo passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2003, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center of Fargo, North Dakota.
Leo, son of Frank and Clara (Martin) Kessel was born November 22, 1914, in Billings County, ND. He grew up and attended school in Billings County and later moved into Belfield. Leo worked with CCC before enlisting into the US Army in 1942, where he served at Ft. Sill, OK. He was honorably discharged in 1943, then moved back to North Dakota and worked for various ranchers and farmers. He managed the Phillip 66 station in Belfield for several years. Leo also worked with his brothers at Kessel Builders & Supply and more recently the Teddy Roosevelt Foundation as a carpenter. Leo loved to play pinochle at the soldiers home. However, his great enjoyment came in the time shared with his family especially his grandchildren.
Leo is survived by his son, Kenneth (Pamela) Kessel of Houston, TX; two grandchildren, Nichole and Justin Kessel; two brothers, Nick (Goldie) Kessel of Belfield, Alois (Dorothy) Kessel of Dickinson; five sisters, Agnes Halstead of Dickinson, Angeline (Harry) Romine, Agatha (Floyd) Higgins, Florence Boelow all of Portland, OR, Mary Olinger of Richardton along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.
Ethel Nelson
Funeral Services for Ethel Nelson, 82, of Grassy Butte, are Wednesday, January 29, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Steven Tangen officiating. Interment will follow at Dickinson Cemetery.
Visitation is Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel continuing on Wednesday one hour prior to service at the church.
Ethel passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2003, at her home in rural Grassy Butte.
Ethel was the youngest daughter of Julius and Elnora (Martinussen) Krogh born December 2, 1920, on their homestead at Snow, ND. She received her education at the Snow Country School. Ethel worked for different families doing housework and caring for small children. She was married to Clifford “Tip” VanHorn in Glendive, MT on September 24, 1940. In April 1946, Tip and Ethel bought a ranch in Little Beicegel Creek west of Grassy Butte. Tip passed away in 1973. She married Palmer Nelson, a life long friend, on November 8, 1975, in Dickinson, ND. They lived in the Badlands northwest of Grassy Butte until the time of her death. She enjoyed gardening, entertaining friends, relatives, and helping her husband on the ranch. Ethel believed in the old western hospitality of always having a hot cup of coffee for anyone who stopped by her home. She was a longtime member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dickinson.
Ethel is survived by her husband, Palmer of Grassy Butte, ND; one brother Alvin (Marionette) Krogh of Dickinson, ND; one sister, Norma Neidt of Ennis, MT; one step-son J.D. VanHorn of Marmarth, ND; three sisters-in-law: Norma (Charles) Hedden of West Plains, MO; Myrtle Krogh of Glendale, AZ; Vinette Krogh of Dickinson, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Tip, five sisters: Anka, Edna, Hulda, Karen & Marie and six brothers: Johan, John, Eldor, Hilmer, Fredrick & Fred.
Carson Murdy
Mass of Christian Burial for Carson Murdy, 96, of San Diego, CA, formerly of Dickinson, is Friday, January 31, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Austin Vetter, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Carson passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2003, at Villa Monte Vista Nursing home San Diego, CA where he has resided since September 2002.
Carson, a son of Andrew C. and Elizabeth (Nold) Murdy was born July 15, 1906 in Springs, SD. He grew up and attended country schools in the Tolstoy and Hoven area later attended normal school in Aberdeen, SD. Carson married Oliva Morgen on April 17, 1928, in Dickinson, ND. Carson worked at Sax Motor Company for 55 years and for 33 years as Service Manager. Carson's dedication to public service was demonstrated by the active role he maintained for various organizations. In his earlier years he was a Cub Scout Leader and Jaycees member, and also joining the Elks Lodge 1137 of Dickinson and Knights of Columbus Council 1515. Served as Grand Knight of Council in 1954-55 and again in 1959-60. Carson also served as District Deputy and on the State level as Warden and Secretary spending 13 years at the state level. He was a 4th Degree member and served as faithful navigator for the 4th Degree. Carson was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and served as usher for 40 years.
He is survived by his sons, Richard (Frances ) Murdy of San Diego, CA, Donald (Patricia) Murdy of Morton, WA; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Louise in Denver, Colo.. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Oliva, daughter Shirley, four brothers, Lloyd, Howard, Lee & Walter and one sister, Agnes McMannus.

Evelyn Hedges, 76, of Ekalaka passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at the Dahl Memorial Health Care in Ekalaka.
Cremation has taken place.

Roger Boltz

Roger Boltz, 42, of Belfield, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2003, at his home.
Roger, the son of Raymond and Lydia (Hecker) Boltz, was born July 17, 1960, in Belfield, ND. Growing up he attended elementary school at St. Bernard’s and Belfield Elementary, graduating from Belfield High School in 1978. Roger married Maureen O’Brien “Mony” on July 28, 1979 in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. After making their home in Belfield for a short time they moved to The Boltz Family farmstead. He worked in the oilfield, welding and as a butcher for sometime. Roger considered himself fortunate because he not only shared the love of one woman but, four special daughters and a large family. He found great pride in watching his daughters compete at sporting activities and extremely proud to be called a grandfather. Roger also enjoyed camping, auction sales and farming. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, Belfield.
Roger will be greatly missed by his wife, Maureen of Belfield, ND; three daughters, Shauna (fiancée Ryan Bartholomew) Boltz of Dickinson, Talia Boltz of Bismarck, Chelsea Boltz of Belfield; one granddaughter, Brooklyn Bartholomew; his mother, Lydia Boltz of Dickinson; four brothers; Jim Boltz of Denver, Ron (Barb) Boltz of Grassy Butte, Bob (Stell) Boltz of Belfield, Ray Boltz Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; seven sisters, Sharon (Jerry) Roberts of Morrison, CO, Carolyn (Dave) Fantz of Morrison, CO, Janice (Randy) Hutzenbiler of Anaconda, MT, Nita (Darby) O’Brien of South Heart, Berna (Bruce) Plott of Evanston, WY, Susie (Daniel) Hutzenbiler of Belfield, Jody (Jeff) Baranko of Belfield; numerous nieces & nephews. Daughter, Carlye Ann Boltz, his father Raymond Boltz, one brother, Warren and his grandparents, preceded him in death.

Mass and Christian burial for 69 year old Anna M. Kurtz, of Dickinson will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson with Father Dennis Schafer officiating. Burial will be in the St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery in Lefor, ND.
Rosary and Vigil service will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at the Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel with Bernie Krebs and Deacon Ralph Stockert officiating.
Anna Marie Kurtz, 69, of Dickinson, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2003, St. Joseph Hospital in Dickinson. Arrangements are with Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.
Visitation will be on Tuesday February 4, 2003, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm at the Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel.
Anna Marie Kurtz passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Dickinson.
Anna Marie Kurtz was born on June15, 1933 the daughter of Mike and Eva (Schneider) Flohr in Dickinson. She was raised in Lefor and attended school there. Ann was married to Ray Kurtz on October 9, 1951 at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Lefor. Ann was a cook at the Lefor School when the family lived there. After Pat & Mike graduated from school Ann and Ray moved to Dickinson in 1976 where they have made their home since. She continued cooking for several years at a few diners in town and then worked the later years at the cleaners with her niece, Pam. Ann being a kind and religious woman always loved and prayed for her family and friends. She enjoyed visiting with her friends at Wal–Mart, playing bingo with her sister, Luella and her niece Pam. She especially enjoyed crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her husband, Ray, Dickinson; two children, Pat (Lyle) Lien, Hettinger and Mike (Tammie) Kurtz, Sidney, MT; three grandchildren, Andrea Werlinger, Bismarck, Justin Werlinger, Del Rio, TX and Kimberly Kurtz, Sidney; a great-granddaughter, Alaina; a brother, Robert (Lorraine) Flohr, Sacramento, CA and a sister, Luella (Kasper) Krebs, Dickinson.
Her parents and two brothers preceded her in death.
