Herman A. Urness

Herman A. Urness, 74, of Park River, ND, died at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Dahlen Lutheran Church, Dahlen, ND. Rev. Vernon Severson will officiate and Interment will be in Zion Cemetery, Dahlen. Military Honors and Flag Presentation will be accorded by the John Larson Post No. 247 of the Petersburg, ND, American Legion.

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services in the church on Saturday.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dan Urness, James Iverson, Peter Bechel, Richard Laber, Wallace Horejsi and Charles Laber.

Herman Urness was born Oct. 6, 1926 in Dahlen Township, Nelson County, near Dahlen, ND, the son of Andrew and Hilda (Dahlin) Urness. Herman received Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church near Dahlen and confirmed his Christian faith at Dahlen Lutheran Church in Dahlen. He was raised and grew to manhood near Dahlen, where he also received his public education.

He was inducted into the United States Army and served in occupied Japan. After receiving his Honorable Discharge he returned to Dahlen to farm on the family farmstead until his retirement.

He was united in marriage to Ruth Myer of June 16, 1950 at West Prairie Lutheran Church, near Jessie, ND. The couple lived and farmed near Dahlen until moving to Park River in July, 1997 where they have since lived.

Herman was a member of the Dahlen Lutheran Church and served on the Dahlen Lutheran Church Council. He was a willing participant in community activities including the Dahlen Township Board, and the Dahlen Roll-A-Ways Square Dance Club. Herman was a member of the John Larson Post No. 247 of the Petersburg, ND American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Park River, ND; son, Richard (Cleo) Urness of Park River, ND; daughters, Linda (Steve) Gertz of Minot, ND and Dorothy (Michael) Beaver of Niagara, ND; six grandchildren, Julie Koepp, Eric Urness, Amanda Gertz, James Beaver, Dawn Beaver and Charles Beaver; brother, Alton (Joyce) Urness of Elmhurst, IL and sister, Doris (Lyle) Pratt of Northwood, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Bertha Welch and brother, Arnold Urness.

The Bakke Funeral Home of Fordville, ND, is in charge of arrangements.

Edgar G. Westphal

Edgar G. Westphal, 62, of Munich, ND, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Munich. Rev. Charles Sheffler will officiate and burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home today from 12 noon until 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at the church one hour prior to services.

Serving as pallbearers will be Edgar's sons.

Edgar George Westphal was born on Jan. 27, 1939 in rural Cavalier County, near Clyde, ND, the son on Rudolph and Eleanor (Backes) Westphal. He was reared and educated there, graduating from Clyde High School. He served in the United States Army for 2 years.

On Sept. 7, 1963 he was united in marriage to Susan MacArthur in Munich. They established their home in Clyde until moving to Munich in 1966. They farmed near Clyde until retiring in 1996. He served as postmaster in Clyde for several years and also was a rural carrier out of Munich until 1994.

He was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Munich.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Susan of Munich, ND; sons, Bradley (Melissa) of Williston, ND, Michael (Donna) of Warroad, MN, Brian (Donella) of St. Cloud, MN, Matthew of Warroad, MN, Aaron of Grand Forks, ND and Adam at home in Munich, ND; grandchildren, Rebecca, Reggan, Jonathon, Anthony and Erica; sisters, Iona (Allan) DuBois of Langdon, ND, Retta (Pat) Klemisch of Thief River Falls, MN, Mary (Donald) Feldner of Starkweather, ND, Dorothy (Jim) Bassingthwaite of Watertown, SD and Faye (Larry) Schill of Lawton, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David.

Gilbertson Funeral Home of Devils Lake is in charge of arrangements.

Loyd Olson

Loyd Olson, 85, of Warwick, ND, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at the Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Warwick Lutheran Church, Warwick, ND. Rev. David Nichols will officiate and burial will be in the Warwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Monday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church.

Loyd Olson was born March 1, 1916 at Warwick, ND, the son of Theodore and Maria (Amundson) Olson. He was reared and educated there graduating from Warwick High School. He graduated from Mayville State college, Mayville, ND, and taught in some country schools and in high schools across the state including, Crary, Doyon, Warwick, Sheyenne, Watford City, Arnegaard, Horace and Oberon. He retired in 1976.

He was a member of the Warwick Lutheran Church, Retired Teachers Association, and the Sons of Norway. He helped care for may infirm people in the community. He enjoyed traveling and his home and family.

He is survived by cousins, Orville Amundson of Portland, OR and Chester Amundson of Hope, ND and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Melinda Jacobson; and brothers, Arthur and Millard.

Gilbertson Funeral Home of Devils Lake is in charge of arrangements.

David M. Dion

David M. Dion, 27, life-long Devils Lake resident died Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. James Gross will celebrate the mass, with burial in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., with a Rosary and Vigil Service at 7 p.m., and Wednesday from 9 -11:30 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Trin Lang, Paul Dahlen, Darin MacDonald, Greg Iverson, Joey Dion, Chad Haman, John Anderson and Galen Blazer.

David Matthew Dion was born July 24, 1973 in Devils Lake, the son of Terrance and Joanne (Miller) Dion. He was reared and educated in Devils Lake, graduating from Devils Lake Central High School in the class of 1991. While in school, David was involved in various sports.

He enjoyed farming and lots of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, demolition derbies and auto racing. He also enjoyed mechanical work. Most of all, he liked being with his friends.

David was employed at Leevers County Market.

He is survived by his parents, Terry and Joanne, of Devils Lake; sister, Kristine Dion, and brothers, Steve and Charles Dion, all of Devils Lake; grandparents, Mary Dion, of Devils Lake, and Edward J. and Georgine Miller, of Doyon, N.D.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, William Joseph Dion.

Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Josephine Gustafson

Josephine Gustafson, 96, of Devils Lake, ND died on Tuesday afternoon, June 12, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake. Rev. Gloria Anderson will officiate. A Graveside service will be held at the Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare, ND on Monday at 11:30 a.m. Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Sunday from noon until time of service. Honorary Pallbearers will be Josephine's grand nieces and nephews and all of Josephine's former students.

Josephine Gustafson was born on June 10, 1905 at Turtle Lake, ND, the daughter of Sam and Belle Olson Gustafson. She was reared and educated in Turtle Lake. She received her teaching certificate and taught in rural schools in McLean County, ND. She then attended Jamestown College where she received her bachelor of arts degree in 1928. In 1928, she began teaching high school in Bowman, ND and also served as the Junior High principal. From 1931 to 1932, she was a high school teacher in Garwin, IA. She returned to North Dakota where she was an elementary teacher at Kenaston, ND, high school classroom teacher at Alamo, ND and from 1936 to 1941 she was the High School Principal and teacher at Drayton, ND. She then served as a High School Principal and classroom teacher at St. Thomas and Carrington, ND and again returned to Drayton to assume her same positions. In 1947, Josephine moved to Devils Lake where she made her home through the years. She was a senior high school Mathematics instructor and a Guidance Counselor at Lake Region Junior College for six years. She attended many seminars and summer school sessions and received her Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1958 from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. During the summer months and vacations from teaching, she worked for 15 years in a ladies ready-to-wear store in Devils Lake. Josephine retired on June 1, 1970 after 44 years of teaching.

Josephine held various offices and positions on national, state and local levels in many organizations including North Dakota State Committee on Aging, White House Conference on Aging, National Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association, North Dakota Education Association and the Devils Lake Education Association. She was very active in the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and was an instructor and North Dakota Coordinator of the 55 Alive Program and also the Mature Driving Program. She was also a member of the Phi Lambda Theta and also the Delta Kappa Gamma Sororities. Josephine was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Federated Music Club and the American Association of University Women and Business and Professional Women.

Josephine is survived by her niece: Lorna G. (Thomas) Berge of Grand Forks, ND, nephew: Bernard G. (Kay) Gustafson of Colorado Springs, CO, grand nieces: Gail (Bill) Kastner, Erika (Christopher) Porter, both of Denver, CO, Gayle (Brad) Aafedt of Grand Forks, Erin (David) Erickson of Bemidji, MN, grand nephew: Scott (Wendy) Berge of Grand Forks, nine great grand nieces and great grand nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Albert and Ben Gustafson.

Dorothy Jane Lamb

Dorothy Jane Lamb, 87, Rochester, Minn., formerly of Devils Lake, ND, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, in the Alterra Wynwood Care Center in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral Service will be on November 10, at 3 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Devils Lake.

Gilbertson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
