George Kinsley Grant was born on December 8, 1917, in East Stanwood, WA, to Kinsley George and Rose Ann (McCabe) Grant. He grew up and attended school in Everett, WA, and then graduated from high school in Minot, ND. George married
Louise F. Bong on May 19, 1940, in Minot, ND. He volunteered for service in the U.S. Army and served in the Railway Operating Battalion from 1944 until 1946, in Germany, France and Austria. Upon returning from the service he attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. George worked on the railroad for all of his life, spending 42 years with the Great Northern and later Burlington Northern Railway, working in the communications department. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing and loved to spend time with his family.
George is survived by his wife, Louise Grant, Moorhead, MN; one son, Pastor Doug (Charlotte) Grant, Larimore, ND; two sisters, Nora Grant, Fargo, ND, and Katherine Kinney, Cheney, WA; sister-in-law Arlene Grant; three grandchildren, Christopher (Sarah) Grant, West Fargo, ND, Stephanie (Clyde) Harvey, Bloomington, MN, and Michael Grant, Minneapolis, MN; three great-grandchildren, Ariel Holbrook, Avery Grant and Aiden Grant.
He was preceded in death by his parents: a son, Gary R. Grant; two brothers, Harry and Richard; sister-in-law, LaVonne Grant, and brother-in-law, John Kinney.
Daniel J. Sigdestad, 105
Died: Thursday, November 18, 2004, in Eventide Lutheran Home.
Daniel J. Sigdestad was born September 17, 1899 at his parent's farm near Bristol, SD. There were nine children in his family, but the first four infants died.
Mr. Sigdestad attended his first eight years of school in a one-room rural school house near Bristol. He attended Lutheran Bible School in Grand Forks, ND during high school, and Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. He also attended summer school at Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, SD.
Mr. Sigdestad and his twin brother were drafted into the Army the fall of 1918; only weeks later the Armistice was signed, ending the war. He taught school for nine years in Webster, Bristol, Lily, Westport, and Stratford, SD. During that time, he married
Freda Westley from Hannaford, ND.
The Sigdestads moved to Webster in 1934 with their three children. There Mr. Sigdestad was Deputy Superintendent of Schools, serving six years with his sister, Minnie, County Superintendent of Schools. He was Sunday School Superintendent at the Lutheran church in town, as well. He also worked as a clerk/salesman in Webster and would help out on his brother's farm near Bristol whenever he could.
The family moved to Moorhead, MN in 1941. This was during the Depression, so further schooling to gain a MN teaching certificate was out of the question. He worked as a traveling salesman for a book company as well as a clerk in several men's clothing stores in Moorhead and Fargo. He spent 45 summers walking through fields as far south as Texas and east as Ohio as a crop hail inspector. He retired in his 80's. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for nearly sixty years; he taught Sunday School to all ages and was usher for many of those years. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and he loved to golf. Mr. Sigdestad taught the English classics, including poetry of the Masters. He could recite those poems from memory until the day he died. He became quite a poet himself, having poems published in several books.
His son, Duane, was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1947, three months after returning from World War II, having fought in major campaigns as a paratrooper. He and his wife then adopted a nine year old boy, Curtis.
Mr.Sigdestad's wife died of cancer in 1949. He married
Myrtle Nellermoe in 1951. She died in 1996. Others who preceded him in death were three sisters, Clara Fuglestad, and Minnie and Carol Sigdestad; two brothers, Selmer and Joel Sigdestad; and two grandchildren, Lee Duane and Jill Adair.
Surviving are two daughters: Joyce Evenson, Columbia, MO and her husband, Walter; Mary June Anderson, Lakewood, CO and her husband, Roger; and one son, Curtis, Louisville, KY and his wife Kathleen. Also, 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 15 nieces and nephews and their families, many cousins and dear friends, all who loved and respected a most remarkable man whose faith in God was his primary legacy. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
Orris K. Asleson, 91

Orris K. Asleson, age 91, died Thursday, April 21, 2005, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo.
Orris Kenneth Asleson was born to Ole Julius and Ingeborg Belle (Broten) Asleson on February 24, 1914. Orris attended Ulen public schools, and was baptized and confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in Ulen, MN.
In 1938, Orris began working for the Great Northern Railroad in Fargo, retiring in 1976 after 38 years. He was a member of the International Order of Railroad Machinists. He married
Dorothy Lucille Livdahl of Ulen, in Crookston, MN, on April 19, 1942. They lived in Fargo until moving to their north Moorhead home in 1954. Dorothy passed away on June 11, 1978.
Orris entered the U. S. Army in 1942, completing his basic training in Camp Claibourne in Louisiana. He was assigned to Company B of the 330th Battalion of Combat Engineers in 1942, to construct defense facilities at Churchill, Manitoba, on Hudson Bay. That same year he was sent across the equator to India in his winter uniform as a Corporal Technician to construct the Ledo Road in Burma, connecting the Indian and Chinese Theatres. He returned to Colorado Springs, CO in 1945, suffering from recurring bouts of malaria. During his time in Colorado he served as a military policeman in a German POW camp there until being discharged from the Army, in 1946.
Orris was a local baseball legend for three decades, playing for the Ulen Arrows and Hawley Hawks until the mid-1950's. He was an avid hunter, and also enjoyed visiting his children out West.
Orris is survived by his three children, Kenneth (Judy) of Monarch, MT, David (Teresa) of Clancy, MT, and Linda of Spokane, WA; one brother, Osborne, of Rosewood on Broadway, in Fargo; four grandchildren, Cindy of Bishop, CA, Evan and Kerri, both of Great Falls, MT, and Randi of Spokane, WA; two nephews, Mike and Darin Livdahl of Fargo; and one niece, Mary Knopfler of Ulen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; one brother, Noel; and one sister, Rosella.
Pallbearers include Mike and Darin Livdahl of Fargo; Art Anderson of Moorhead; Oliver Mathison of Fargo; Robert Asleson of Rollag; and Barry Berg of Moorhead. Honorary pallbearers include Cheryl Cassman of Fargo; Beth Rehder of Moorhead; Elaine Jensen of Moorhead; Kenneth Lee of Moorhead; Lee Davis of Medina, ND; his other caregivers at Rosewood on Broadway; and the Veteran's Hospital in Fargo.
In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Meals On Wheels and the Vikings Sword Museum in Ulen, MN. A luncheon will follow the interment service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ulen, MN.

Arlo was born on May 4, 1939, in Fargo, ND, to Arlo J. and Mary Ann O.(Hovdestad) Wayman. He grew up and attended school in Park Rapids and Glyndon, MN. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 until 1960. Arlo married
Lauren Robinson in 1961 and they had two children, Terese and Lynn. They divorced in 1978. In the years he was married
to Lauren, he attended Interstate Business College in Fargo and graduated with a degree in Accounting, and he traveled extensively for several years. Arlo married
Debora Wren on August 10, 1985, in West Fargo, ND, and they made their home in West Fargo, before moving to Fargo in 1998. He worked for Fargo Tank for eleven years. Arlo was a loving father, grandfather, husband, and brother. He liked to hunt and barbeque. He loved life and lived it to the fullest.
Arlo is survived by his wife, Deb, Fargo, ND; three daughters, Terese(Abraham) Garcia, and Lynn(Rafael)Sanchez, both of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Heather Wren, Fargo, ND; one brother, Larry (Gale) Wayman, Sheldon, ND; three sisters, Mary Bock, Horace, ND, Sandy (Bob) Holm, Glyndon, MN, and Judith (Don) Cocherell, Dilworth, MN; seven grandchildren.
Alois J. Knauf, 92

Alois J. Knauf passed away July 13, 2004 at the Villa Maria Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for six years.
Alois Joseph Knauf was born in Moorhead, MN on July 15, 1912 to Matthew and Laura (Baldwin) Knauf.
Alois grew up in Moorhead. He graduated from Moorhead High School, where he excelled in "Spud Athletics". Alois married
Delores Peterson on December 31, 1938. They made their home in Moorhead. He was employed by Clay Motors and the Coca-Cola Company. He was employed by Nash Finch Co. in Fargo for twenty five years. He retired from Nash Finch Co. in 1977.
Alois was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Matt and Larry, his daughter, J. Jean Ducca and granddaughter, Debbie (Eid) Taylor. He is survived by his wife of sixty five years, Delores Knauf, his son, Mike Knauf, Grandin, ND; daughter, Patty Ekstrom, Fargo, ND; four grandchildren, including Lisa (Dan) Wolf, Moorhead, MN and seven great grandchildren, including Alex Wolf, Moorhead, MN.
Irene M. Anderson, 77

Irene M. Anderson, 77, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Monday, March 7, 2005, at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
Irene Ramstad was born February 2, 1928 at Moorhead, Minnesota to Hellick and Anna (Akesson) Ramstad. She grew up and attended school in Hawley. Irene married
H. Clifford Anderson on December 1, 1945. Following their marriage they resided on area farms and later moved into Hawley. She picked potatoes at area farms, worked for Sorenson's Cafe, Johnson Department Store for many years, and the Hawley Locker Plant for many years.
Irene enjoyed sewing, knitting, golfing (she held several offices in the Ladies' Club including President), playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren.
Irene is survived by her husband, H. Clifford Anderson, Hawley, MN; three sons, Bill (Evaughn) Anderson, Inver Grove Heights, MN, Ken (Pauli) Anderson, Inver Grove Heights, MN, and Dave (Bobbi) Anderson, Fort Collins, CO; one daughter, Linda (Darrel) Fiedler, Sartell, MN; one sister, Helen Anton, West Fargo, N.D.; seven grandchildren. Rachel & Erin Anderson, Cinda (Fiedler) Helmin, Jeff & Sara Anderson, Nicky Anderson & Cassi Nichols; and two great grandchildren, Kyler & Hailey Helmin.
James D. Alm, 55

James Alm, 55, of Hawley, Minnesota, died Monday, April 12, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
James Alm was born September 9, 1948 at Hawley, Minnesota to Albert and Florence (McDonald) Alm. He grew up and graduated from Hawley High School, then graduated from Detroit Lakes Technical College in Agronomy. He was a police officer in Crookston, Minnesota and also worked in agriculture at the same time. He later managed Midwest Patrol Security Company, then sold real estate in Minnesota. James married
Darlene Rehder on February 13, 1983 in Clay County, Minnesota. They recently resided in Hawley, Minnesota.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene Alm, Hawley, MN; one daughter, Kari (Chad) Conner, Isle, MN; three step-daughters, Dawn Christiansen, Glyndon, MN, Gail (Scott) Fields, Cannon Falls, MN, and Dana (Tom) Anderson, New Hope, MN; one step-son, Larry (Michelle) Christiansen, Glyndon, MN; his mother, Florence Alm, Hawley, MN; one brother, Lloyd (Janice) Alm, Hawley, MN; one sister, Angie (Harold) Sandvik, Albertville, MN; six grandchildren.
Claude F. Christianson, 81
Died: Tuesday, March 22, 2005, in Providence Hospital - Mobile, AL.
Claude Francis Christianson, a magnificent husband, wonderful father, and great friend to many, journeyed to his new life, on March 22, 2005, at the age of 81.
Claude was born to Emil and Mayme (Masse) Christianson, on November 12, 1923, in Britton, South Dakota. He attended schools in the area, graduating from high school in 1941, at Cogswell, North Dakota, where the family resided. He joined the Naval Air Corps and, during World War II, served his country proudly, in the South Pacific. Claude chose to return to Cogswell and work with his father in the family business, Christianson's Bar, where he later purchased and maintained the family business for 23 years. In 1948, he married
Madelyn Daley, the love of his life, at Cogswell, North Dakota, and to this union four children were born. In July of 1967, Claude sold his business and moved his family to Moorhead, Minnesota, to manage Ready Italy Pizza Co. After moving to Moorhead, Claude was best known, for 35 years, as a compassionate, dedicated, insurance agent for Lincoln National Life, with the R. E. Mulliken Agency. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman who enjoyed music and dancing. Claude took pride in, and experienced great joy with, his family.
Claude is survived by his loving wife, Madelyn; his four children, Connie (Rodney) Pearson, Minneapolis, MN, Clark (Diane) Christianson, Mobile, AL, Craig (Sandra) Christianson, Valley City, ND, Clinton (Sally) Christianson, Des Moines, IA; and foster daughter, Lucille (Gary) Saewert, Denver, CO; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Warren (Marlys) Christianson; and his extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Cleo and LaVon; and one brother, Doran.
