Walter C. "Bud" Hatlestad Jr.,
Died: Saturday, May 15, 2004, in Meritcare, Fargo.
Born June 13, 1931 in Warwick, North Dakota, son of Walter and Mabel Hatlestad.

On May 15, 2004, surrounded by his family's love and God's presence, Walt Hatlestad began his eternal life with his Father in Heaven.

Walt Hatlestad, "Bud, " developed the foundation of his values while working on the family farm near Warwick, North Dakota. He excelled in sports throughout his life, including basketball, football, baseball and golf.

He graduated from High School in 1949 in Warwick, North Dakota and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Jamestown College in 1953. Upon graduation from college, he entered the Armed Services, serving in Darmstadt, Germany in intelligence as well as on the Army's baseball and basketball teams.

Walt married his life's love, Pauline Ellen Dean on November 28, 1953. They moved to Gackle, North Dakota in 1955 where Walt began his teaching career. He then taught in Jamestown and Valley City. In 1964 he began teaching at Fargo North High where he was an English teacher and coach in football and basketball. He earned his Masters degree in Education from North Dakota State University in 1969.

In addition to strengthening the minds and bodies of young students and athletes, "Coach" also worked to enhance the spirit of coaching through his activities in the North Dakota Coaching Association. One of his noted accomplishments was the inclusion of women coaches in the Association.

Walt was very active in advancing the cause of education and strengthening the image of the education profession through his service on the boards of education associations, including serving as Director, Vice President and ultimately President of the North Dakota Education Association. He was passionate about adequate funding for education, teacher compensation, and bringing cultural diversity to North Dakota educators.

He leaves Pauline, his wife of over fifty years; four children, Pam Hatlestad, Steve Hatlestad, Tim (and Keri) Hatlestad, Joan (and Dan) Degerness; and five precious grandchildren: Jordan, Walker and Parker Degerness, and Griffin and Morgan Hatlestad; and his brother, Jim (and Marilyn) Hatlestad. He joins in eternity, his mother, Mabel Wood and father, Walter Hatlestad.

Walt loved reading, sports, reading, golf, reading, spending time with his grandchildren, and reading. His new or rejuvenated interests in retirement included reading, baking, reading, enjoying his grandchildren, and more golf.

Joseph Pfau, 82
Died: Thursday, February 03, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Joseph Pfau, 82, of Moorhead, died Thursday, February 3, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Joseph was born on July 20, 1922 to Andrew and Regina (Ahmann) Pfau in Dilworth, MN. He grew up and attended school in Dilworth. He served in the Army during WWII. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad, American Crystal Sugar and BF Nelson Roofing until his retirement in 1972. He married Esther Rehder on January 15, 1954.

He is survived by his wife, Esther, Moorhead, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Pete, Jacob, Johnny and Andrew; and three sisters, Isabelle Schelhorn, Rose Peterson and Margie Anderson.

Rudolph "Rudy" Monson, 97
Died: Thursday, April 28, 2005, in Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, ND.
Rudolph "Rudy" Monson, 97, of Fargo, formally of Gardner, ND, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, in Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo.

Rudolph "Rudy" Monson was born on July 14, 1907 to Otto and Betty (Nelson) Monson in Argusville, ND. He grew up and attended country school through the eight grade in Argusville. He continued his education by taking three winter courses through North Dakota State University in Fargo. Rudy was never married and spent the majority of his working years as a farmer in the Gardner and Argusville area. The last three years of Rudy's life were spent in Rosewood on Broadway. Rudy will be missed dearly by his friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Betty Monson; four sisters, Mildred Monson in 1909, Myrtle Monson in 1929, Hilma Monson in 1980 and Betty Austad in 1999; and two brothers, Roger Monson in 1988 and Robert Monson in 1995.

He is survived by one sister, Dorothy Gingrey, of Harwood, ND; three nephews, Bruce (Martha) Austad, Robb Austad and David (Judy) Gingrey, three nieces, Bonnie (Chuck) Sellers, Pamela Wieder and Kathy (Dan) Olympia; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Doris I. Kommer, 83
Died: Sunday, October 24, 2004, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Doris Kommer, 83, Moorhead, MN. passed away Sunday, October 24, 2004 in the Palliative Care Unit at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND, under hospice care.

Doris Irene Rice was born September 23, 1921 in Fargo, ND to Almer and Lena Rice. Doris attended country school and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1939. She married Lloyd (Cob) Kommer September 2, 1941 in Moorhead, MN. They lived in Dilworth MN for 39 years. Lloyd passed away November 21, 1980. Doris moved to Moorhead in 1982.

Doris worked at the Dilworth Post Office for 16 years and 6 years at Montgomery Ward in Moorhead, MN.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Laurine Kommer, Detroit Lakes, MN; brother-in-law Earl Kommer, Lake Park, MN; seven nieces and nephews, Duane Kuhel, Keith Kuehl, Russell Kommer, Cindy Kommer, Bradley Kommer, Toby Kommer and Lisa Kommer.

Jerrid Allen Swedberg, 13

Jerrid Allen Swedberg was born on February 23, 1991, in Fargo, ND, to Gerald Hurt and Sue Swedberg. He grew up and attended school in Fargo, where he was currently an eighth grader at Ben Franklin Junior High. Jerrid loved to hunt and fish and be at the lake. He loved the company of his uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Jerrid is survived by his mom, Sue Swedberg, Fargo, ND; his dad, Gerald Hurt, West Fargo, ND; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Bernel O. Nelson, 75
Died: Tuesday, April 19, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Bernel Ole Nelson passed away suddenly on April 19th, 2005 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Bernel was born on January 29th, 1930 to Wilhelm and Bergliot Nelson at home in Kindred, ND. He graduated from high school then entered the Air Force where he served for 4 years. He learned his trade while in the Air Force working as a carpool mechanic.

When he was discharged from the Air Force he returned to the Fargo/Moorhead area and worked for several car dealerships as a mechanic.

In 1954 he married the love of his life, Beverly Horn. They made their home in Moorhead and raised five children. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last fall.

In 1957 he opened A-1 Transmission with partner Allen Bekkerus. After retiring in 1991 he continued to farm in the Kindred, ND area - it was his passion and joy. He was getting ready to plant his wheat crop the day he passed away. He also enjoyed playing the clarinet with the Red River Valley Veterans Concert Band, American Legion Post #2 in Fargo of which he was a member for 25 years. He also enjoyed wood working and was in the process of finishing the last of six rocking horses for his great grandchildren.

Bernel was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Henry and sister Nancy.

His is survived by his wife; three sons, Brien (Kristi) of Kindred, ND, Brad (Molly) of Wright, WY, and Blair (Charleen) of Fargo, ND; two daughters, Cindy of Moorhead, MN and Denise (John) Jubile of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; Brother Wesley (Irene) of Fargo, ND, sisters Ardis Erickson, Fargo, ND, Ileene (Wally) Fjelstad, Mesa, AZ; and sister-in-law Connie Skoog, Fargo, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

He was a kind and gentle man who will be greatly missed by all who know and loved him.

James J. Wickum, 61

James J. Wickum, 61, 610 Rensvold Boulevard, Moorhead, MN, died on Tuesday, January 18, 2005, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.

James J. Wickum was born on April 5, 1943, in Minneapolis, MN. He grew up and attended school in Moorhead, MN, at St. Joseph Catholic School and then graduated from the Campus High School at Moorhead State Teacher's College. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1964, at San Diego, CA. He served in the Vietnam War on the U.S.S. Ticonderoga in Tonkin Bay. He was discharged in 1968 and returned to Moorhead. James married Rosemarie Varriano on August 16, 1969, in Dilworth, MN. He attended Moorhead Tech for two years, studying Heating and Air Conditioning and then attended Pipefitters school in Grand Forks, ND. He worked for various plumbing and heating contractors in the Fargo-Moorhead area and then worked at Moorhead Tech for two years before going to work for the Fargo Public School District. He retired from the school district as Chief Engineer in 2001, for health reasons. James was a ham radio enthusiast and loved to talk to people all over the world. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

James is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Wickum, Moorhead, MN; three sons, Derek (Elizabeth), Mizpah, MN, Daren (Fiance) Jessica Wiltz) Minneapolis, MN, and Damon, Madison, WI; one sister, Mary Ann (Kenneth) Weldon, Hutchinson, MN; one granddaughter, Paige Li; many nieces and nephews.

Lucye Nell Buchanan, 90

Lucye Nell Buchanan was born October 2, 1914, in Forney, TX to Arthur and Nell (Drake) Yates where she grew up and attended school. She attended John Tarleton JR. College and later graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Speech and Drama in 1935. She married M.L. "Buck" Buchanan on October 2, 1935 in Morgantown, WV.

She is survived by two sons, Arthur (Norma) Buchanan, Pepperell, MA and David (Cindy) Buchanan, Stillwater, OK; one daughter, Lynnel (Bob) Boone, Glyndon; one sister, Virginia Yates, Glyndon; 17 grandchildren, Matthew Lynn Buchanan, Daniel Patrick (Tammy) McKanan, Mark Andrew Buchanan, Sarah Anne Buchanan, Timothy Robert (Sandra) Boone, Laurie Nell Boone, Rebecca Lynn (Kent) Estey, Andrew Lee (Cindy) Boone, Kathryn Ann (James) Nitschke, Michael Leslie Buchanan, Peter David Buchanan and Amy Virginia Buchanan; 16 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
