Vance G. "Johnny" Ralston, 80, of rural Lake Park, died Friday, January 6, 2005, in the Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, ND.
Vance "Johnny" Ralston was born on September 2, 1925 to John and Ragna (Johnson) Ralston in Grand Forks, ND.
He grew up and attended school in Grand Forks, ND.
He joined the United States Navy in September 1942 and was honorably discharged in August, 1946.
On March 15, 1986 he married
Angeline Grosskreutz in Cormorant, MN.
Johnny was a professional musician and worked as a Film Technician for television stations and the North Dakota Highway Department until his retirement in 1989.
He is survived by his wife, Angeline Ralston, rural Lake Park, MN; two sons, Gerald (Cindy) Ralston, Buffalo, MN and Ward Ralston, Fargo, ND; one daughter, Karen (Dale) Johnson, Buxton, ND; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John & Tom Ralston; and two brothers, Lyle and Bryce Ralston.
Eileen J. Grund, 76
Died: Sunday, August 14, 2005, in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Eileen June Grund, 76, of Fargo, died Sunday, August 14, 2005, in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, surrounded by her loving family.
Eileen June Grund was born in Casselton, ND, on June 22, 1929 to Max and Louise Franke.
They moved to Fargo in 1935.
She graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1947.
Eileen worked at the Fargo Drug Store and later was employed by Service Drug Store for 25 years from 1969-1994, and then Medical Pharmacy until her retirement in 2000.
On October 23, 1949 she married
Burton P. Grund.
They made their home in Fargo.
Eileen was a homemaker and mother to six children.
She was a life long member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Fargo.
She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and their families.
They were a very special part of her life.
She took interest in the Vikings football team and other local sports.
Eileen enjoyed playing card games, reading, dancing and listening to Daniel O'Donnell music.
She is survived by:
two sons, Bob (Chris) Grund, Boise, ID and Mike (Cyndi) Grund, Moorhead, MN;
four daughters, Bev (Dale) Carlson, Delta, CO, Linda (Roy) Gerhart, Havre, MT, Janet (Rick) Hogfoss, Fargo, ND and Peggy (Kevin) Swalley, Billings, MT;
two brothers, Rev. Lloyd (Lucy) Franke, Bloomington, MN and Rev. Merle (Ginna) Franke, Austin, TX;
one sister, Myrna (Jim) Turner, Hackensack, MN;
sixteen grandchildren, Marissa Grund, Alayna Grund, Camille Grund, Chad Carlson, Brenda Carlson, Chris Evenson, Michelle Grund, Leslie Grund, Derek Grund, Brandon Grund, Angie Gerhart, Rachel Gerhart, Randy Hogfoss, Scott Hogfoss, Jenny Hogfoss and David Swalley;
and three great-grandchildren, Megan, Alli and Eli Gerhart.
She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jim Franke; and two sisters, Florence Jendro and Doris Lyseng.
Bergit L. Runholt, 94
Died: Tuesday, September 13, 2005, in Elim Care Center, Fargo, ND.
Bergit was born on October 2, 1910 near Ulen, MN to Sam and Julia Wee.
She grew up and attended county school near Ulen.
She moved to Fargo and worked in the Manchester Building.
She married
Joseph Runholt in 1946 in Ulen.
Joseph passed away in 1948.
After Joseph's death she moved to Moorhead and worked for Northwestern Carton Formers.
In her retirement she also worked at the Comstock House in Moorhead.
She is survived by her daughter Joyce (Lyle), West Fargo, ND; three granddaughters, Michelle (Norman) Erickson, West Fargo, ND, Jessica (Chris) Bachmeier, Fargo, ND and Kjirsty Jendro, Denver, CO; two great grandsons, Kaleb and Seth and 2 nieces and one nephew.
Esther V. Schmidt, 85
Died: Friday, December 09, 2005, in MeritCare's Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND.
Esther V. Schmidt, 85, of Moorhead, formally Sabin, died Friday, December 09, 2005, in MeritCare's Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND.
Esther Violet Lobitz was born on August 9, 1920 to Louis and Marie (Burke) Lobitz, in rural Sabin, MN.
She grew up and attended school in Sabin and one year in Barnesville.
During her schooling in Barnesville she traveled by train back and forth to Barnesville as her father was the Depot Agent for Great Northern.
She graduated from Moorhead High school in 1939.
On August 30, 1941 she married
Clarence Schmidt in Sabin, together they had two children, Rodney and Lynette.
Clarence died on August 13, 1993. In 1989 Esther moved to Moorhead.
Esther was a Homemaker's Club member, she was a Charter Member of the Sabin 4-H club and a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sabin.
Esther's highlight of the day was having coffee with friends.
She will be missed by many.
She is survived by one son, Rodney (Clarice) Schmidt, Sabin, MN; one daughter, Lynette (Ed) Sweeney, West Fargo, ND; four sisters, Elizabeth Leonard, Avon, MN, Marge, Paasch, Moorhead, MN, Lois (Roy) Snyder, Fargo, ND and Janice (Carl) Anderson, Fargo, ND; two step-brothers, Roy Johnk, Ashland NH and Ken Johnk, Portland, OR; two step-sisters, June Beck, Austin, TX and LaVerne Rowlett, Moorhead, MN; three grandchildren, Randy, Jennifer and Jessica; two great-grandchildren, Scott and Brandon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Fred "Bud" and George Lobitz; and one sister, Dorothy Krabbenhoft.
Walther G. Prausnitz, 80
Died: Saturday, September 17, 2005, in Meritcare Health System, Fargo, ND
Walt was born on October 2, 1924 to Fred and Maria Prausnitz in Cologne, Germany.
The family emigrated to the United States after the Nazis came to power, and Walt completed schooling in New York City at Stuyvesant High School.
He worked as office manager for an electrical equipment distributor, continuing college education part-time.
Ultimately he completed his degrees at the University of Chicago – A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. – specializing in comparative literature.
He taught English and Humanities in the Chicago City College system from 1949 – 1952, and then joined the Concordia College faculty, Moorhead, MN in 1952.
At Concordia he was chairperson of the English department, 1952-1970, was awarded the Reuel and Alma Wije Distinguished Professorship, and served as Director of Liberal Arts Studies from 1970 – 1999.
In that capacity he developed the college's first formal assessment program, designed for the improvement of teaching, especially in the required undergraduate courses.
His research and publications almost all focused on ways of strengthening student learning.
He received an honorary doctorate, Litt.D., from Dana College (Nebraska) in 1980.
Walt's career included a variety of other activities.
He taught cello at the Concordia Conservatory from 1952 – 1964.
He also devoted a good deal of time to community work: as board member of the Fargo-Moorhead Open Forum, 1953 – 1957; as principal cellist and as manager of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, 1952 – 1967; as board member, later vice president for development of Prairie Public Television, 1961 – 1967; as board member, later as state chairperson of the Minnesota Governor's Commission on the Arts, 1975 – 1976.
Since retirement from Concordia College, Walt has continued research on teaching and learning, focusing on ways of involving students to help them become efficient owners of their learning.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents and brother.
