Gudrun D. Knutson, 90, of Hawley, MN, died Tuesday, February 21, 2006, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, North Dakota.
Gudrun was born September 10, 1915, in Cromwell Township, near Hawley, Minnesota to Albert and Tillie (Hillestad) Johnson. She grew up and attended rural school in Cromwell Township, then graduated from Hawley High School. She worked at the Hawley Bakery and the Manchester Biscuit Company of Fargo. Gudrun married
Bennet Knutson on November 8, 1941 at Lysne Lutheran Church, near Hawley, Minnesota. Following their marriage they farmed in Parke Township. Bennet died October 13, 2005. She continued to live on the farm. She was a member of Grong Lutheran Church.
She is survived by three sons, Milan (Elsie) Knutson, Fargo, ND, Darrel Knutson, Hawley, MN and Glenn (Gwen) Knutson, Hawley, MN; four grandchildren, Kristen Knutson, Sara Knutson, Jennifer Andel & Jon Knutson; two sisters, Valborg "Vollie" Eppler, Hawley, MN, and Anna (Harry) Jackim, Moorhead, MN; one sister-in-law, Ione Johnson, Hawley, MN .
Alice L. Nelson, 87
Died: Saturday, March 04, 2006, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Alice L. Nelson, age 87, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2006 in Merit Care Hospital, Fargo, ND. She was born December 2, 1918 to parents Michael and Oleah Jorgenson in Wolverton, MN. She was raised and graduated from Wolverton High School in 1936. After high school she worked at the café in Wolverton where she met her husband, Hugh, who was a frequent customer. Alice and Hugh were married
on January 11, 1943 in Topeka, Kansas. Alice lived in Wahpeton, ND while Hugh was on active duty in the Air Force during WWII. Her son Dwayne was born in Wahpeton during that time. When Hugh returned they moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where he became an instructor at an Air Force base. Hugh worked for the American Crystal Sugar Company in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Colorado. Alice worked at Armors in West Fargo and Epko Film in Fargo. When Hugh retired they decided to live on a farm in Christine, ND. Alice and Hugh lived there until Hugh died in 1983. At that time, Alice moved back the to Fargo/Moorhead area. Alice loved music and was always active in the church. She loved flowers, loved to sing, played the organ, taught Sunday school, and even directed a church choir. Alice loved her family dearly and had many friends who she cherished. She will be missed greatly by her family and many friends.
She is survived by her Son, Dwayne (Mary Kay) Nelson; daughter, Diane Nelson; two sisters, Helen Swanson, Moorhead, MN, and Minnie Kirkhorn, Choteau, MT; grandchildren, KC, and Jake (Angela) Nelson; and great-grandchildren, Sebra, and Annika.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh, and sisters, Thelma Edenstrom, Olive Jacobson, and Amy Alm.

Jerry Tabatt was born on August 16, 1935 to Henry and Dorothy (Evert) Tabatt in Moorhead, MN. He grew up near Sabin, MN and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1953. On January 5, 1963 he married
Lucy Johnson in Sabin, MN, together they had two children.
Farming and trucking were Blackie's way of life. He enjoyed concerts and shows, playing cards, and sporting events of all kinds. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Blackie was a kind man with an enormous heart who would do anything for anyone. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lucy, Sabin, MN; one son, Chad Tabatt, Thief River Falls, MN; one daughter, Jana (Jeff) Carson, Walhalla, ND; his mother, Dorothy Tabatt, Moorhead, MN; one sister, Ardie Brandvig, Moorhead, MN; four grandchildren, Hunter, Austin, Blake, and Mckenzie; and one daughter-in-law, Amy Tabatt, Thief River Falls, MN
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Tabatt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Mayo Clinic or the Roger Maris Cancer Center.
Margaret Selland, 97

Margaret Opperud was born on July 18, 1908, at Tamarac Lake, in Becker County, MN, to Haldor and Mary (Elstad) Opperud. She grew up and attended school in Litchville, ND, graduating from Litchville High School. She then attended and graduated from Valley City State Teacher's College in Valley City, ND. She taught school in the Fargo Public Schools. Margaret married
Edwin J. "Red" Selland on August 1, 1940 at her home near Litchville, ND. While he served in the U.S. Border Patrol they lived in Fabens, TX, Fort Lincoln, ND, and Crosby, ND. In 1946, they moved to Bismarck, ND, where they lived until 1951 when they moved to Jamestown and then in 1957, moved to Fargo, ND. Margaret had been a member of Olivet Lutheran Church since 1958. She was also a member of P.E.O., and the Fine Arts Club. She took up painting when she was almost seventy years old. She had enjoyed spending summers at the lake near Park Rapids, MN, and winters in Arizona.
Margaret is survived by her son, David (Kathy) Selland, Horace, ND; a sister, Eloise Neevel, Marion, ND; two grandchildren, Alani and Megan Selland; and her long term caregiver and best friend, Char Lamb, Dilworth, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.J. "Red" Selland; and her sister, Alice Gudmestad.

Robert J. "Bob" Loeffler, 83

Robert J. "Bob" Loeffler, age 83, of Moorhead, died Thursday, March 16, 2006, in Innovis Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Bob was born October 20, 1922 in Worcester, MA to Elvira and Guy Loeffler. He attended elementary and high schools in Worcester and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. He pursued his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison. He accepted a position at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN as a Professor of Botany in the Biology Dept. In 1973 he resigned this position because of ill health. He had a life-long interest in history, which led him to the Comstock Historic House in Moorhead. He became the site manager and in so doing the house was opened to the public. Bob enjoyed a life long interest in plants, the circus, his family history, and the church.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Jane; children, Nathan, of Manchester, CT, Clay (Kimberly) of Blaine, MN, Leslie (Jeff) Haugstad, of Moorhead, and Catherine (Matt) Larson of Andover, MN; grandchildren, Adam Loeffler, Peter (Ruth), and Kristi Haugstad, and Brett, Katie, and Erik Larson; and sisters, Loraine (Leslie) Johnson, and Barbara Utter of Worcester, MA.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ruth Caroline Oleson was born on August 31, 1915, in Pine River, MN, to Olaf and Rose (Carlson) Oleson. She graduated from St. Cloud State Teacher's College in 1938 and subsequently taught in several rural schools in Minnesota before moving to Grand Forks in 1944 to teach in the Grand Forks School District. While there she earned a Master's degree from the University of North Dakota. She retired from teaching in 1971, and became an active community volunteer. In 1977, she moved to Fargo. She was an active volunteer with the Dakota Hospital Auxiliary, logging many hours of service at Dakota Hospital.
Ruth is survived by two sisters, Margaret Randall, Dickinson, ND, and Jean Etzell, Long Prairie, MN; she is also survived by three nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Willard A. Hicks, 87

Willard A. Hicks was born on August 17, 1918, in Comstock, MN, to August and Mary (Stern) Hicks. He grew up and attended school there. He served in the C.C.C. and did farm work in the area before going to work for the Railroad. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII throughout the European Theatre, where he received 7 battle stars. Following his service, he returned to Comstock and went into the well drilling business with his brothers. He worked in this business until retiring in 1985. Willard was a gun collector, and enjoyed hunting and reading. He also had a passion for cars. He moved in to Moorhead in 1986.
Willard is survived by a niece, Beverly Hicks, Fargo, ND; and two step-nieces, Virginia Gregg, Hawley, MN, and Caroline Swenson, Moorhead, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, 9 brothers and six sisters.

Pauline Dobler was born on March 13, 1920, in Ventura, North Dakota, the daughter of Gottfried and Christina (Mueller) Dobler. She grew up and attended school in Ventura, ND. After school, Pauline worked as a nanny in California and traveled. She moved to Fargo, North Dakota, in 1944. Pauline met and later married
Henry T. Dorval on April 6, 1946, at Wild Rice, North Dakota. After their marriage, Pauline and Henry made their home in Fargo, and Pauline was a homemaker. In 1958 they moved to a farm north of Fargo, where they lived until moving to the Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo in December of 1995. Her husband, Henry, preceded her in death on July 29, 1996. Pauline continued to reside at the Villa Maria.
She is survived by her son, Duaine H. (Denise) Dorval, 2525 – 29th Avenue South, Moorhead, MN; one brother, Dan Dobler, Tower City, North Dakota; one grandson, Jesse Dorval, Moorhead, MN. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; five brothers and four sisters.

She was born November 24, 1925, to Emil and Pauline (Zielke) Ritter in Dunn County, ND. After graduating from Dunn Center high school she attended Dakota Business College. She married
Arlin Benson on February 3, 1962, and made their home in Fargo, ND. Arlin passed away December 21, 2004.
Helen is survived by her children, Charlene (Ron) Preuss, Keller, TX, Denise (Duane) Mischel, West Fargo, ND, Cindy (David) Price, St. Peters, MO, Jim (Kim) Benson, Monticello, MN, Paul (Sheila) Benson, Moorhead, MN; one sister, Appalona Torgerson, Auburn, WA, fourteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many very, very special nieces and nephews.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Arlin; her parents; six brothers, Christ, Louie, Henry, Edward, Carl and Emil Ritter; and three sisters, Lydia Weber, Ottilia Haugen and Augustina Ochsner.
Merton G. Crume, 87
Died: Saturday, October 29, 2005, in Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, ND.
Merton Gordon Crume was born on August 1, 1918 in Glyndon, MN to Frank and Faye (Grant) Crume. He served in the US Navy during WW II. On May 1, 1946 he was united in marriage to Margaret Stulz Carlisle. He farmed in the Glyndon area until he retired. He entered Rosewood on Broadway in August 2005.
He is survived by his children, Ellen Anderson, West Fargo, ND, Barbara Cameron, Stacy, MN, Donna Walhood, Minot, ND, William Crume, Dilworth, MN, Carol (Conrad) Hoff, Valley City, ND, Chuck (Lynn) Carlisle, Canyon Country, CA, Jeannette Savageau, Moorhead, MN and Genevieve Carlisle, Fargo, ND; his brothers Richard Crume, Spokane WA, Bradley Crume and Stanley Crume, both of Glyndon, MN; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Faye Crume; his father, Frank Crume; his step mother, Emma Crume; his brother Grant Crume; his sister, Helen Generes; his wife, Margaret; and one son, David Crume.
