Madsen, Bette
06/04/2004

Bette J. Madsen, age 80, Fargo, ND, formerly Grandin, ND, died peacefully surrounded by her family in her son Mark’s home in Hillsboro, North Dakota, on Friday, June 4, 2004.

A memorial service for Bette will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Grace Lutheran Church in Grandin, North Dakota. There will be a prayer service Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in the Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo.

Bette Werner was born on the family farm near Hampden, North Dakota, the daughter of Elmer and Nellie (Strong) Werner. She grew up in this area and graduated from Hampden High School. Bette was united in marriage to Elmer Madsen on August 14, 1941, in Starkweather, North Dakota. Elmer served his country in the United States Army and upon his discharge they made their home in Gluek, Minnesota. In 1948, they moved to Wolford, North Dakota, and later to Gardner in 1955. In 1964, they made their home in Grandin where she worked for Purina Mills and the Grandin Co-op. Elmer and Bette enjoyed spending many winters in Arizona before moving to The Waterford in Fargo in 1999. Elmer passed away on April 6, 2002.

Bette loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also very fond of her family’s dogs. She was an avid bridge & bingo player. She was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Grandin, North Dakota.

Bette is survived by her loving children, Michael (Karen) Madsen of Phoenix, Arizona, and children Eric and Aaron; Joy (Jon) McSparron of Grandin, North Dakota, and children, Jason, Joshua and Jessica; Mark (Vicki) Madsen of Hillsboro, North Dakota, and children, Rick, Kelly and Steve; and Ted (Kathy) Madsen of Glyndon, Minnesota, and children, April, Kyle, Jessica and Courtney; and also nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Gladys Furseth of San Jose, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brother, Edwin.

Leith, Kenneth

Kenneth A. Leith, age 89, Fargo, died Monday, June 7, 2004, in Innovis Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Kenneth Arthur Leith was born February 15, 1915, at Lawton, North Dakota, the son of Allan and Maude (Poissant) Leith. He was educated at the Newbre Township school. He served in the Civil Conservation Corps in 1935-36, working at Casselton, ND, and Hinckley, ND.

He married Mary Connelly on June 28, 1937, and they farmed and raised their children at Lakota, ND. From 1957-61, they lived in Minot, ND, and returned to Lakota where they lived until 1981 when they retired and moved to Fargo, ND.

He served on the Lakota School Board for nine years. He and his family were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lakota where he also served as a Parish Trustee for a number of years. He was an honorary chapter farmer of the Future Farmers of America. In 2002, he and Mary received the Excellence in Parenting Award by the North Dakota Parents’ Day Council.

He lived for his beloved wife, Mary, children, and grandchildren. He loved the prairies of North Dakota and was a man of great faith.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by his children, Dennis, Minot, ND, Dale (Valerie), Owatonna, MN, Mary Beth Leith, Grand Forks, ND, Judy (Lance) Sateren, Bismarck, ND, Rev. James Leith, Fargo, Ann Pecka, Fargo, and David (Betty), Stanley, ND; 18 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and one sister, Lois Schwab, Mankato, MN.

He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Mary Louise (Anderson) Leith; great grandson, Brent Allen Leith; three brothers, Donald, Marvin and Orval; and two sisters, Pearl Strand and Opal Rainsberry.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Fargo-Moorhead YWCA Shelter or Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 12 noon in Holy Cross Catholic Church, West Fargo. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. in Holy Cross Catholic Church, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held Thursday in the church one hour prior to services. Burial will be at Holy Cross cemetery, Fargo.

Walbridge, Mary

Mary F. Walbridge, age 75, Fargo, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in MeritCare, Fargo.

Mary Lattimer was born October 10, 1928, in Algona, Iowa, the daughter of Harold William and Gladys M. (Wilson) Lattimer. She attended school in Illinois and Iowa. She graduated from Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa. She married Dale M. Walbridge in Dubuque, Iowa. They later divorced. She was employed in social work in both Illinois and North Dakota. She moved to Fargo in 1961 and worked for Catholic Family Service and Lutheran Social Services. She had also worked for Red River Human Services of Wahpeton.

Sitter, Joseph "Joe"

Joe Sitter, age 97, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo.

Joe was born on October 22, 1906, the son of Joseph and Katherine (Fiechert) Sitter, in McHenry County, North Dakota. He grew up in this area, attended country school, and was baptized and confirmed at St. Anselm Catholic Church in Fulda, North Dakota. Joe was united in marriage to Barbara Welk in 1928. They made their home in the Berwick area where they began raising their family. In 1941, they moved to Towner, North Dakota, where he began working for the Great Northern Railway (Burlington Northern). He was transferred to Rolette in 1954, and later to Rugby, North Dakota, in the early 1960's. Joe worked as a machine operator, a track inspector, and as a foreman prior to his retirement. Barbara passed away in 1995 and Joe moved to Fargo and has lived at Riverview Place since that time.

Joe is survived by his children, Leo (Delores) Sitter of Fargo; Jerome (Margot) Sitter of Fairfax, Virginia; and Sr. Jean Sitter RSM of Omaha, Nebraska; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; his granddaughter, Barbara Ann; and his siblings, Nick, Martina Burckhard, Frank, Lena Black, Johanna Welk, Katie Volk, Helen Iverson, and Tony.

VISITATION: 6-7 PM Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Riverview Place Chapel in Fargo - and also one hour prior to the funeral on Monday

PRAYER SERVICE: 7 PM Sunday at Riverview Place Chapel

FUNERAL MASS: 10 AM Monday at Riverview Place Chapel

BURIAL: 1 PM Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Little Flower Catholic cemetery in Rugby

Lockwood, Linda R.

Linda R. Lockwood

Linda Rae Lockwood, Fargo, ND died Friday, June 11, 2004 in MeritCare Hospital after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Linda, the daughter of Hanford and Alice Ness was born on July 16, 1947 at Stanley, ND. She graduated from Bowbells High School and Minot State University. On November 25, 1966 she married her life’s love, Ed Lockwood. She began her teaching career at Berthold High School, Berthold, ND, as a home economics and physical education instructor. While at Berthold, Linda coached gymnastics and was the school’s first girl’s basketball coach. After leaving Berthold in 1977, Linda assumed the duties of office manager for the Mohall Public Schools, Mohall ND for 10 years. She and her husband moved to Underwood, ND where she once again returned to the classroom to teach home economics and physical education at Underwood High School. In 1989 she was a tutor at Trenton, ND public schools. She and Ed moved to Fargo in 1991, and Linda assumed the duties of office manager for the Creative Arts Program for the Fargo Public Schools. A position she held until her death.

Linda was very active in community service programs where ever she lived. In 1979-80 she was the First Lady for the ND Jaycees, assisting her husband as he served as state president. During their tenure and the following two years she was program manager for Project Concern International, a world health education program. She received award recognition for her efforts. Her untiring dedication to world health issues and her desire to assist people were benchmarks of Linda’s beliefs. The ND Jayceettes, presented Linda with the prestigious Key Woman Award in 1980, the same year she was recognized by the Outstanding Young Women of America program. Linda held numerous local and state offices for the ND Jayceettes.

In Fargo, Linda has been active in promoting the arts through her work and volunteer efforts. She was an active member of the Hope Lutheran Church where she enjoyed the wonderful people and participating in church functions. Linda’s love of life, exuberant smile and caring attitude was like a magnet for people, especially kids. She will be missed by those lives she has touched during her 34 years working in public education. She enjoyed collecting clowns, reading, biking, yoga, music, travel and attending high school sporting events.

She leaves Ed, her husband of 38 years and one son, Shane Lockwood of West Fargo, one grand son, Justin Gilge of Killiher, Minnesota; her parents, and two brothers, Dennis and Wayne both Bowbells, ND.

Memorial contributions may be sent to either Hope Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND or the Fargo Public Schools Foundation. A scholarship in Linda’s name will be established.

Visitation: Monday, June 14, from 4-6 pm with a prayer service at 6:00 at Boulger Funeral Home

Funeral: Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at 1:00 in Hope Lutheran South Campus Church, Fargo, ND.

Burial: Thursday, June 17, 2004 at 2:00 at the Bowbells cemetery, Bowbells, ND

Saewert, Lois

A celebration of life for Lois M. Saewert, 88, Fargo, ND, formerly of Davenport, ND, will be held Monday, June 14, 2004, at 2 p.m. in Canaan Moravian Church, rural Davenport, ND. Visitation will be Sunday at Fredrikson Funeral Chapel in Kindred from 4-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Canaan Moravian cemetery, rural Davenport. Lois died Friday, June 11, 2004 at Rosewood n Broadway, Fargo, ND.

Lois Maureen Saewert was born September 30, 1915, in Chaffee, ND to Henry and Minnie (Schultz) Jackson. She attended rural grade schools and graduated from Casselton High School, Casselton, ND. She earned a degree in Education at Valley City State Teacher’s College, Valley City, ND. Lois taught at rural schools in Cass County with the last being Addison District 29 during which time she met Eddie Saewert. Eddie and Lois were married October 27, 1939 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at rural Leonard, ND. Eddie and Lois farmed in the Davenport area until moving to Casselton, ND in 1970 and lived there until Eddie passed away on June 20, 1997. Lois moved to Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo in 1999.

Lois was active in the Canaan Women’s Fellowship, Davenport Homemakers, the Farm Bureau, and the Davenport Community Club. Her hobbies were painting and bridge. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren’s activities.

Lois is survived by her son, John (Sharon) Saewert, Davenport, ND, and her daughter Sharon Nygard, Fargo, ND; her grandchildren, Michele Jenkins (John), Edina, MN, Janel Gubeno (Jason), Mason, MI, Michael Saewert (Amy), Davenport, ND, Scott Saewert (Penny), Durbin, ND; and her great-grandchildren, Brock Saewert, Benjamin Saewert, Elizabeth Saewert, Sydnie Saewert, Emma Saewert and Hunter Gubeno; her sisters, Charlotte Drummond, Bemidji, MN and Barbara Craft of Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Norma Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.

Lois is preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Saewert; her parents, Minnie & Henry Jackson; and her brother, John Jackson.

Fisher, Robert

Robert G. Fisher, 75, of Fargo, died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Meritcare Hospital, Fargo.

Robert G. Fisher was born on February 2, 1929 in Milwaukee, WI to Alex and Martha Fisher. He grew up and graduated from high school in Milwaukee and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee. He then attended North Dakota Agriculture College in Fargo on a football scholarship and was drafted into the Army. He served in Austria during the Korean War. Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to Fargo and graduated from college. He married Jean Ford on August 17, 1957 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and they made their home in Fargo. Robert worked at Leo Lumber in West Fargo, was an import manager for Muscatell Chevrolet and was employed with WDAY TV for approximately 18 years. He also worked in free-lance advertising and photography into his retirement years. He was active in several organizations in the community, including Theta Chi, Sertoma Club and Ad Club of Fargo-Moorhead.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Jean of Fargo; daughter, Carole (Marvin) Wright of Moorhead; grandson, Callan Wright of Moorhead; sister, Marillyn Meier of Milwaukee, WI; and nephew Robert (Kathy) Meier and their son, Justin of Wauwautosa, WI.

Funeral Service: Friday 2 pm Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead, MN

Visitation: Friday in the church one hour before the funeral service

Emerson, Leo

Leo Emerson, age 68, Fargo, ND, died Monday, June 14, 2004 at Bethany Homes, Fargo.

Leo Marvin Emerson was born May 8, 1936 in Fargo, ND where he grew up. He attended Woodrow Wilson Grade School and Roosevelt Junior High School. In 1984 received his GED.

He joined the Navy and served for 12 years. Prior to joining the Navy he married Carol Jean Hendrickson. She preceded him in death. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Fargo to raise his two daughters.

While in Fargo he worked for Fargo Tank Company and Sexauer Company from which he retired in 1990. He married Cecilia Olson in 1996 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. They lived in rural Hawley, MN until 2000 when they moved to Fargo.

He is survived by his wife, Cecilia; two daughters, Cheryl Radke and Michele Hill, both Moorhead, MN; a son, Leo “Butchie” Jr., Fargo; four stepchildren: Karen (Monroe), Carol (Jim), Larry, Tony (Roxy); 6 grandchildren; 14 step grandchildren; 23 step great grandchildren; four sisters: Jackie (Roland) Lampton, Lake Park, MN, Colleen (Bill) Leahy, Lake Park, MN, Helen Stokes, Richfield, WA, Margie Inks, Minneapolis, MN.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin; and three brothers, Gary, Gene, and Bart.

Memorial Service: 3 p.m. - Wednesday, June 16, 2004, Mavis Whiting Chapel, Bethany Homes, Fargo
