McCormick Jr., John

John L. McCormick Jr. died at home on Thursday, July 8, 2004 surrounded by family members.

John L. McCormick, Jr. was born in Fargo, North Dakota on June 4, 1913 to John and Mary (Retterath) McCormick. He attended St. Anthony’s grade school, St. John’s Preparatory School and NDAC, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1935. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He went to work for Northern Improvement Company, a company founded by his father in 1935, until World War II broke out. He entered the Army in May of 1941 and remained on active duty until April 1946. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Corp of Engineers and was assigned to work on the Manhattan Project. After the war he returned to Northern Improvement Company becoming President in 1966. In 1987 he became Chairman of the Board where he remained until his retirement this year. Under his leadership, Northern Improvement Company became one of the 60 largest highway construction companies in the United States.

He was very active in the business community and the non-business community serving on many boards and doing fund raising. He was President of the North Dakota Chapter of the Associated General Contractors and a lifetime Director of the National Association of General Contractors. He was involved in the NDSU Development Foundation for many years and was one of the members of the Search Committee which brought Darrell Mudra to NDSU to turn around its football program. More recently, he was instrumental in the Fargo Catholic Schools Network fund drives.

He has received many awards including NDSU Outstanding Alumni Award, NDSU Alumni Achievement Award, NDSU Honorary Doctorate, he is a member of the North Dakota Highway Hall of Fame and is a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. The Fargo Catholic Schools Network recently named him an honorary lifetime board member. He was also a member of the Elks, Eagles and Knights of Columbus.

He married Lucile Marie Coghlan in Dickinson, North Dakota on November 7, 1940. They had seven sons and lived in Fargo, Oxbow and Carefree, Arizona. She died in September of 1987. He married Glee Marie Wilkinson on September 4, 1988.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lucile, his parents, and a brother, Maurice. He is survived by his wife Glee, a sister, Patricia Moen, his seven sons, John III (Olivia) Bullhead City, Arizona, Joseph, Maurice (Joy), Thomas (Judy) all in Fargo, Stephen (Karen) Bismarck, Robert (Julie) Avon, Colorado and Paul (Janice) Edina, Minnesota, 20 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 P.M. Monday at Sts. Anne & Joachim Catholic Church, Fargo. The Funeral will be on Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. at Sts. Anne & Joachim Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday in the church, and also from 9:00 – 10:00 A.M. Tuesday in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Fargo Catholic Schools Network, NDSU, Nokomis or your favorite charity. Funeral arrangements by Boulger Funeral Home.

Strand, Donald

Donald E. Strand, 77, of Kindred, North Dakota, died July 13, 2004 at his home.

Donald was born October 13, 1926 in Abercrombie Township, North Dakota to Ingmar and Ruth (Gunness) Strand. Donald attended school in Abercrombie and graduated from High School in 1944. Donald enlisted in the US Navy and served on the Saratoga Aircraft Carrier in the South Pacific. Donald served from 1944 to 1946. Donald returned to the area and attended NDSU Agricultural School, Fargo, ND for 2 years. Donald then worked for a while at the Red Owl Store in Fargo. Donald married Betty Lou Thompson in 1948 at West Prairie Lutheran, rural Kindred, ND. They settled in the Kindred area and farmed till Donald retired from farming in 1991, but continued to worked with his son on the farm till he suffered a stroke. Donald served as a board member of the Latin American Lutheran Mission from 1970-1997 and serve as president from 1990-1995.

Donald is survived by his wife Betty Lou, his children: David (Debby) Strand, Kindred, ND, Julie Ann (Alex) Mandes, Helotes, TX, Sidney (Kim) Strand, Cheyenne, WY, Susan (Jack) Morris, Taylor Ridge, IL, James (Susan) Strand, Pelican Rapids, MN, Linda (Howard) Pender, Barnesville, MN, his brothers Percy (Judy) Strand, Wahpeton, ND, Irving (Shirley) Strand, Rice Lake, WI and Lyle (Shirley) Strand, Hawley, MN and a Brother-in-Law Glenn Fixen, Wahpeton, ND and 20 grandchildren. Donald is preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters Rachel Fixen and Naomi Lyseng.

The Funeral for Donald E. Strand will be Saturday, July 17, 2004 at 11am at the West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Kindred, burial will follow at the West Prairie cemetery. The Prayer Service will be Friday, July 16, 2004 at 7pm at Fredrikson Funeral Chapel, Kindred, ND with visitation at 4-7pm. Fredrikson Funeral Chapel, Kindred, ND, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Sletten, Winfred

Winfred "Fred" Sletten, age 75, of Mayville, North Dakota, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Lutheran Memorial Home in Mayville.

Winfred was born on July 25, 1929, the son on Lewis and Amanda (Norgaard) Sletten, near Hatton, North Dakota. He grew up in this area and attended school. He lived with his family in this area for many years before moving to Coon Rapids, Minnesota. In 2002, Fred moved to the Nursing Home in Halstad, Minnesota, where he lived prior to entering the nursing home in Mayville.

Winfred is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Overmoen of Hillsboro, North Dakota; Marian Domier of Mayville, North Dakota; Marcella Flatin of Klemme, Iowa; his brothers, Marvin Sletten of Mason City, Iowa; Elroy Sletten of Greenwood, Wisconsin; Franklin Sletten of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Knute Sletten of Dallas, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Arthur Lecy, age 75, of Fargo, North Dakota, died on Friday, July 23, 2004, at his home under the care of Hospice of the RRV.

Arthur Alonzo Lecy was born August 7, 1928, in Winger, Minnesota to Alfred and Anna Lecy. Arthur was united in marriage to Emma Jean Waltz on October 9, 1964, in Moorhead, Minnesota. He was employed at S&S; Construction in Moorhead for many years before working at Border States Construction in Fargo until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Emma Jean of Fargo; his children, Rande Gene Reinhardt of Fargo, ND; Linda Granrud (Rick) of Hawley, MN; Tracey Jo Schrupp (Dennis) of Deep Haven, MN; Neil Arthur Lecy of Fargo, ND; and Kelly Jacobson (Kevin) of Fargo, ND; his five grandchildren; his sisters, Maxine Davidson (Larry) of Yuma, AZ; Avonne Trelstad of Moorhead, MN; Juanita Stuhaug (Charles) of Bagely, MN and Karen Schimanzky (Scott) of Macintosh, MN; his brothers, Floyd Lecy (Annabell) of Moorhead, MN; and Tim Lecy (Karen) of Macintosh, MN.

He is preceded by his parents; two brothers, Everett Lecy and Sanford Lecy; and his daughter in law, Connie Reinhardt.

Anderson, Elizabeth

Elizabeth "Betty" J. Speltz Anderson, age 80 of Fargo, formerly of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, died Sunday, July 25, 2004 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Elizabeth Bahnub was born March 27, 1924 in West Salem, Wisconsin to John and Lydia (Schaller) Bahnub. She graduated from high school in Sparta, WI. She married James A.. Speltz in Sparta on May 19, 1944. Together they established the Speltz Studio in Black River Falls, WI which they operated from 1949 until James’ death in 1969.

She served as president of the Indianhead Professional Photographers Association in 1973. In 1995 the Professional Photographers of America designated her a Master Photographic Craftsman.

She married Jack M. Anderson in Black River Falls on September 17, 1971.

They moved to Fargo in 1986, where she was a member of Sts. Anne and Joachim Catholic Church, acted in several productions for the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theater and served as Fargo’s Mrs. Claus at Santa’s Village-Island Park from 1987-1995.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Adeline, Elvira, Marie, Bertha and Viola; and her first husband, James Speltz.

She is survived by her husband, Jack M. Anderson; sons, Michael (Pat) Speltz, Londonderry, NH, Steven (Paula) Speltz, El Portal, CA; stepsons, Terrance (Stella) Anderson, Raytown, MO, Stephen (Kathy) Anderson, Ealgonquin, IL and Jack (Peggy) Anderson, Jr., North Branch, MN; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren.

Memorials are preferred to Sts. Anne and Joachim Parish - Elizabeth Anderson Memorial or City of Fargo Park District, Santa Village - Elizabeth Anderson Memorial.

Visitation: Tuesday 6-8 p.m. - Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo

Prayer Service: Tuesday 8 p.m. - Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo

Funeral: Wednesday 2 p.m. - Sts. Anne and Joachim Catholic Church, Fargo

Ovrebo, Sigrid

Sigrid Emelia Ovrebo passed away on July 29, 2004, Halstad, MN. She was a resident of Halstad Living Center. Sigrid Blomquist was born on 2 Sept 1914, in Spring Lake Minnesota. At an early age she moved to Waubun, Minnesota where her father owned the creamery. She graduated from Waubun high school in 1930. She attended business college in Superior, Wisconsin. On September 2, 1938, she married Gerhard O. Ovrebo. She and Gerhard lived in several places and in 1946 moved to Valley City, ND, where Gerhard taught at what was then called Valley City State Teachers College. Sigrid was a homemaker and managed the College Bookstore. After Gerhard=s retirement from Valley City State they moved in 1977 to Apache Junction, AZ. They later moved to Green Valley, AZ. During retirement they spent the summer months at their cabin on White Earth Lake, Minnesota. In 2000 Sigrid moved to Halstad.

Sigrid is survived by son John (Halstad) and wife Pat and their children Christopher (St. Paul) and Katie (Fargo), son Clark (Edmond, OK), sisters Jean Hoff (Green Valley, AZ), Marianne Blomquist (Edina, MN), Marge (Bob) Johnson (Naples, FL), brothers Don (Mary) Bloomquist (Richmond, VA) and Ted (Rae) Blomquist (Green Valley, AZ), and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and sisters Grace Blomquist, Joy Erickson, and brothers-in-law Edgar Hoff and Donald Erickson. Sigrid enjoyed many things in life. Among her most passionate interests were classical music, nature, bird-watching and grandchildren. In Valley City she was an active member of PEO and Bridge Club. She touched the lives of everyone she met.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday August 4, 2004 at 10:15 a.m. at the Halstad Living Center and at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Halstad Lutheran Church, Halstad, MN.

William J. Lund, 78, of 1625 28th Ave. So. Fargo, ND died Sunday, August 1, 2004 in MeritCare Hospital.

William was born on May 1, 1926 on a farm near Oakes, ND the son of William H. & Alma (Gemar) Lund. He grew up on the farm and attended school in Oakes graduating from Oakes High School in 1944. He enlisted in the Navy in1944 and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was discharged in 1946 and returned home to Oakes. William married Ramona J. Brummund in Oakes on August 28, 1949. The couple lived in Oakes. Mr. Lund began working as a journeyman lineman for Ottertail Power Company in Oakes in 1955. The couple moved to Lisbon in 1965 and William was promoted to a lead lineman for Ottertail Power. He retired for health reasons in 1985. The couple moved to Fargo in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona; his children: Dennis (Colleen) Lund, West Fargo, ND; LaMonte (Pam) Lund, Bismarck, ND; Myrna Dick and her fiance Ronald Lemke, Dilworth, MN; and Randi (Bonnie ) Lund, Mandan, ND; 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; and two nephews who were raised by William and Ramona, Ray Spear, Lisbon, ND and Roy Spear, Los Angeles, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and sisters.

Rural Grandin, North Dakota

Harold Stokke, age 93, passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Harold was born on November 23, 1910, the son of Knute and Rebekka (Hermanson) Stokke, near Noonan, North Dakota. He grew up in this area, attended school and began working on the family farm. Harold was united in marriage to Merle Ecker on September 17, 1939, at the Grandin Presbyterian Church. They made their home near Grandin where they farmed for many years.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Merle; his children, Allan (Cindy) Stokke of Newport Beach, California; Marlin Stokke of Grandin; Carole (David) Johnston of Fargo, North Dakota; and Beverly (Frank) Salomonsen of Rochester, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, Tara Johnson, Allison Stokke, Eric Stokke, David Stokke, Brian Johnston, Jeffrey Henderson, Cameron Henderson, Kevin Johnston, Todd Henderson, and Matthew Stokke; and 6 great grandchildren. Harold is also survived by one sister, Berniece (Elwood) McVeety of Edina, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Grandin Presbyterian Church, Hospice of the RRV, or World Vision.

Harold "Dick" Rachow

Hillsboro, North Dakota

Harold "Dick" Rachow passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2005, at the Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home at the age of 77.

Harold John Rachow was born on October 15, 1927, in Bohnsack Township, Traill County, ND, the son of Richard and Dorothea (Siegert) Rachow. He was baptized on October 18, 1927, into the Lutheran faith and was confirmed on May 24, 1942. He was a life long member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. Harold grew up on the family farm and attended Bohnsack Consolidated School. He was united in marriage to Doris Drees in Grand Forks, ND, on August 30, 1953. They farmed near Hillsboro until 1977 when he retired and they moved into Hillsboro. In 1980, he was elected to the Hillsboro City Commission and served 14 years as water commissioner and 4 years as Mayor.

Harold is survived by his wife Doris of Hillsboro; his 5 children, Michael of Corcoran, MN; Mark of Fargo, ND; Scott (Jen) of Columbia, MO; Laurie Rachow of Moorhead, MN; and Karen (Michael) Maassel of Fargo, ND; 4 grandchildren, Patrick, Megan, and Benjamin Maassel and Zeke Rachow; 2 step granddaughters, Heather Mejias and Samantha (John) Defere; 2 step great granddaughters, Nique and Lexi Mejias; and his sister, Betty (Robert) Oslund of Silver Bay, MN.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Raymond and John Rachow.

VISITATION: 6-8 PM Friday at Wildeman Funeral Home in Hillsboro - and also one hour prior to the funeral in the church on Saturday

FUNERAL SERVICE: 10:30 Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Hillsboro

BURIAL: Riverside cemetery in Hillsboro
