Honek, Gary

Gary A. Honek, age 57, Fargo, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in his Fargo home.

Gary Anthony Honek was born July 3, 1947, in Fargo, ND, the son of Anton and Anna (Janousek) Honek. He grew up here and graduated from Shanley High School in 1965. He then attended North Dakota State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1969. Gary served as a Cadet in the ROTC program while at NDSU. Following his college graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. He was stationed at Kesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS, later at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL, and finally at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, OK. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force as a Captain. It was while Gary was stationed in Montgomery, AL, that he met and later married his wife, Lou Ann Schumann, on October 2, 1971.

Following his discharge from the military, the couple moved to Fargo in 1973. Gary began employment with LaBelle’s, later known as Best, first working in the camera department. He also served as a department manager and later as store manager. While he worked at LaBelle’s he earned a Masters Degree in Counseling from NDSU. He began work at Media Play in 1993, where he served as both operations manager and later store manager. When he left the retail industry in 2002, he began working for TSA as an airport screener.

He is survived by his wife, Lou Ann of Fargo; two children, Sarah (Cody) Cannon of Grand Forks, ND, and Jared of Fargo; his parents, Tony and Ann Honek of Fargo; and three sisters, Kathy (Rod) Stende of Menominee, MI, Mary (Bob) Rohla of Fargo, and Donna Honek of Fargo.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Steven.

The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Newman Center, Fargo. A prayer service will be held Thursday in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, at 7 p.m. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 p.m. in Boulger Funeral Home and Friday from 1-2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Newman Center. Burial will be at Holy Cross North cemetery, Fargo.

Crary, Helen

Helen C. Crary, age 86, Fargo, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Helen C. Curry, known as Honey, was born April 20, 1918, in Killdeer, ND, the daughter of Aaron and Agnes (Norton) Curry. She grew up in Killdeer, where the family ranched. Helen attended Convent of the Visitation in St. Paul, MN, from fourth grade through her graduation in 1936. She graduated from Rassmussen Business College in Minneapolis, MN, and then worked for Dunn & Bradstreet for two years. She was united in marriage to Vincent W. Crary on October 12, 1940, in St. Paul. They made their home in Fargo. She and Vince built Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo in 1970. She served as the administrator of the nursing home until 1983 when they sold the business. Mr. Crary died in 1991.

Helen wintered in Arizona, and traveled extensively. She enjoyed her family. She was a charter member of Chapter AU, PEO and a member of the Junior League. She taught religious education at St. Anthony’s. She also volunteered at the Opportunity School.

She is survived by five sons, Vincent W. Jr (Becky), New York Mills, MN, Peter (Michelle), Fargo, Jim (Dianna), Anchorage, Alaska, Joe (Cindy), Fargo, and David (Gretchen), St. Paul, MN; four daughters, Stella (Paul) Bridgeford, Detroit Lakes, MN, Marguerite (Clarence) Samuel, Fargo, Jane (Bob) Dvonch, Manassas, VA, and Helen (Jay) Stassen, Mendota Heights, MN; 32 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Allender, Eugene, OR.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vince; and one brother, Aaron.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Sisters at the Carmel of Mary, 17765 78th Street SE, Wahpeton, ND, 58075, to the Sisters of the Visitation Monastery, 2455 Visitation Drive, Mendota Heights, MN, 55120, or to Father Jack Davis, % Marlene Christenson, 3601 10th Street South, Fargo, ND, 58104.

Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Fargo. Visitation will be in the church on Friday from 5:30-7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be in the church on Saturday one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Fargo.

Johnson, Vernon

Vernon G. Johnson, 76, of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 in the Hillsboro Nursing Home.

Vernon was born in Traill County near Buxton on January 23, 1928 to Carl Alfred and Mary (Hettervig) Johnson. He attended school in Hillsboro and in 1946 entered the Navy, serving in the Pacific. He married Mavis Waters on March 13, 1954 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. Vernon worked as a mechanic at Hillsboro Equipment for many years.

He is preceded in death by his son, Bradley Dale Johnson; sister, Ardis Anderson; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Mavis of Hillsboro; son, Jeffrey of Hillsboro; daughter, Debra (James) Knecht of Hillsboro; daughter-in-law, Debra Johnson of Elkhart, IN; grandchildren, Samantha, Michael and Thomas Johnson and Philip, Christopher, Brian, and Benjamin Knecht; sister, Margaret Rohman of Phoenix, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service: Friday 2:00 pm at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Hillsboro.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church and also Thursday from 5-7 pm with prayer service at 7:00 pm at Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro.

Burial: Riverside cemetery, Hillsboro.

Coykendall, Vallie

Vallie Coykendall, 85, Riverview Place, passed away at the home of her son in Fargo on Wednesday, June 16, 2004.

Vallie Coykendall was born to James and Anna (Smith) Irwin on October 29, 1918 in Miltona, MN. She graduated from High School in Parker’s Prairie, MN. She married Merle Hawkins in 1942. She worked for over 20 years at Diana Hughes Clothing store and retired in 1980. Merle died in 1984. She lived at Lake Cormorant and wintered in Rockport, TX. She married Jack Coykendall on April 19, 1988. They moved into Riverview Place in 2002. She enjoyed gardening and yard work, golf, crocheting, and fishing.

She is survived by her husband, Jack; children: Diane Maloney, Shakopee, MN, Nancy Russell (Sheldon), Guthrie, OK, Keith Hawkins (Judy), Fargo, ND; stepson: David Coykendall, Eagan, MN; sister: Marjorie Johnson, Galt, CA; five grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, and two grandchildren: Derrald and Dean Hawkins.

Funeral 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Riverview Place Fargo

Visitation 12:00 to 1:00 Saturday, Riverview Place, Fargo

Burial 5:00 p.m. Saturday Parkers Prairie, MN

Hart, Donald

Donald Hart, 77, of 1003 76th Ave S., Fargo, ND, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, of Pulmonary Fibrosis at Merit Care Hospital in Fargo in the presence of his immediate family.

Don was born in Browerville, MN, at the family home on October 14, 1926, the son of Leo E. and Myrtle (Dann) Hart. In 1932, the family moved to Fargo to be closer to a college for the children. Myrtle died in 1937 (Don age 11) and his father, Leo, became both mother and father to the children.

Don enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17, and was discharged from the service in 1946. He enrolled at North Dakota Agricultural College (NDSU) where he was a member of the ATO fraternity. He graduated with a business degree in 1951. In 1950, Don married Grace Ann Wichmann.

After graduation, Don worked for Armour and Company in West Fargo as a Junior Livestock Buyer. In 1954, he took a job with McDonald livestock as a Buyer and Livestock Handler. In 1959, Don was appointed as a Livestock Buyer for Lande Packing in South St. Paul, MN.

In 1960, Don joined Al’s Sporting Goods of downtown Fargo in sales. In 1964, he joined The Western Shop in Moorhead, which he purchased in 1966 and incorporated as Western & Stockman’s Wear, Inc., a ND corporation. He added a store at Village West and purchased Stockman’s Western Wear in West Fargo. He then added another store in Alexandria, MN. Don and his wife, Grace, owned and operated his network of stores in the 1970’s and sold the corporation in 1981. Don then joined Central Livestock as a Buyer and Salesman. He reopened the West Fargo store in 1986 as Don Hart’s Western Shop. He owned and operated that store until 1998 when he retired to enjoy his family and horses.

When Don was 13, his father bought him his first horse. He continued riding almost daily until two weeks before his death. Don loved horses and owned and trained several champions. He judged horses in the Midwest and Canada. He was a long-term member of the ND Quarter Horse Association. He was a member of the Medora Riders and the Red River Harness Club, and was twice president of the ND Cutting Horse Association. Don was a founding member and inductee to the ND Cowboy Hall of Fame at Medora. He was most recently a founding member of the ND Horse Park where the first races were held last summer. Don conducted horsemanship clinics for 4-H and other horse groups and was often invited to NDSU as a guest lecturer on horse training. He served on the board of the Red River Valley Fair Association from 1972 to the present and was Fair Board President in 1989. Don was a past member of the Elks and Eagles clubs and was an Elder and Trustee of Shepherd of the Prairie Church in Fargo.

Don is survived by his wife of 54 years, Grace; two daughters, Sharon Johnson (Tom, grandson Tyler), Eden Prairie, MN and Terrie Dahl (Brian, grandson Hartley), Fargo, ND; a son Bruce Hart (Stacie), Seattle, WA; a brother Roger (Arlene) Hart, Chino Hills, CA; a brother-in-law Wally Cook, Corvallis, OR; a stepmother Christine Hart, Osakis, MN; and a stepsister Betty Ossino, Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Donna Mae and Cuba, and brother Dale.

The funeral for Don will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Shepherd of the Prairie, Fargo. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Dale, Chad

The Memorial Service for Chad Dale will be held 3 PM Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, North Dakota. Burial will be held on July 4, 2004, in Evergreen cemetery, Brainerd, Minnesota. Chad died on Friday, June 18, 2004, near Hillsboro, from injuries sustained in an accident.

Chad was born on February 17, 1979, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the son of Lon and Sue (Peters) Dale. He grew up in this area and attended school in Colorado Springs and later graduated from Castle Rock High School in Castle Rock, Colorado. He was united in marriage to Venessa Colletti on February 27, 1999, in Morrison, Colorado. They made their home in Castle Rock. Chad was employed by Colorado Chemical Corporation and later by JSK Construction in Fargo.

Surviving are his wife, Venessa of Hillsboro; his daughters, Ashley Anne Dale (4) and Alyssa Adeline Dale (3), both of Hillsboro; his parents, Lon and Sue Dale of Hillsboro; his sister, Malina (Clint) Matheson of Bailey, Colorado; his niece, Kylee Matheson; his grandparents, Lois (Carl) Wildeman of Hillsboro; his mother-in-law, Venus (Tim) Colletti Gerganoff of Castle Rock; his brother-in-law, Louie Gerganoff of Colorado; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and united more than friendship with his cousin, Travis Allen Dale and Heather Heinz Adkinson.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Aaron Dale and Viva and Ray Peters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Chad’s daughters, Ashley and Alyssa.

Wildeman Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Brasel, Frank
06/27/2004

Funeral services for Frank R. Brasel will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Blanchard Lutheran Church, Blanchard, ND. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday in Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro, and in the church on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. Burial will be in Mayville City cemetery. Frank passed away Sunday, June 27, 2004, at his home near Blanchard, at the age of 91.

Frank R. Brasel was born near Perham, MN, on April 22, 1913, and was baptized, confirmed, and educated in that area. He entered the Army in June of 1942 and served in the Pacific theater until his discharge in January 1946. He married Merilla Hilstad on November 6, 1942, while home on leave. After the war they farmed in the Blanchard area until his retirement in 1975. Merilla died in 1983. On January 15, 1986, he married Marion Kvernen, continuing to live on the farm where he enjoyed the pleasures of her large and loving family.

Frank was active in the local community and served for many years on the Blanchard Lutheran Church board, and was also active in the VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Frank is survived by his wife, Marion; one brother, Herbert (Swede) Brasel. He also leaves stepchildren Darrell (Marge) Kvernen of East Grand Forks, MN, Terry (Lynn) Strand of Moorhead, MN, Paul (Tamarie) Kvernen of East Grand Forks, MN, Dale (Kim) Kvernen of Portland, ND, Cheri (Dennis) Gregor of West Fargo, ND, and Jenell (Ron) Braseth of Mayville, ND; 15 step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, George Hilstad (Margaret) of Mayville, ND; nephews, Steve (Linda) Hilstad of Mayville and Paul (Becky) Hilstad of New York City, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews in the New York Mills area.

Dwyer, Helen

Helen Mae Dwyer, age 85, Fargo, ND, joined Jesus in Heaven on Saturday, June 26, 2004 in the loving presence of her children.

Helen Mae Iken was born July 5, 1918 in Fargo, ND where she grew up and attended school. Helen met Clyle Dwyer at the Avalon Dance Pavilion and they married on February 22, 1936 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Fargo. Clyle preceded her in death on January 16, 2004.

Helen was a loving wife and mother to one son and twelve daughters. Her children consumed her life, as did many of their friends who thought of her as their second mother. Helen also enjoyed caring for other children while their mothers were busy with professional careers.

Helen had the gift of being a good listener and was never too busy to sit and have tea with friends and family. Helen enjoyed doing needlework and made many items for the people in her life.

Helen and Clyle enjoyed traveling to the homes of their siblings when Clyle retired. They made numerous trips to New Mexico, Oregon, California and Montana.

May Helen rest in peace and know that her family loved and cared for her and will miss all the time that was spent with her.

She is survived by one son, Greg (Vicki) Dwyer, Fargo; ten daughters, Teresa (John) Rieniets, Claudia (Steve) DuBord, Maureen (Roger) Cook, Yvonne (Ralph) Nordick, Deanna (Red) Scheer, Mary Chezick, all of Fargo, Colleen (Duaine) Hillstad, Moorhead, Janet (Jeff) Tennison, Dilworth, Pauline (Donnie) Noon, Wilton, Terri(Keith) Lauer, Bismarck; 37 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Gladys Knighton, New Mexico, and Elizabeth Braff, Oregon; and two brothers, Robert Charles Iken, Fargo and Ray Iken, Oklahoma.

Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clyle Dwyer; two daughters, Patricia Wright and Bernadine Medler; seven brothers and one sister.

Funeral service will be Wednesday at 12:00 noon in Church of the Holy Spirit, Fargo. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church, and also on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Fargo.
