Discher, Hubert

Hubert passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2004, at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, North Dakota, at the age of 90.
Hubert E. Discher “Hoot” was born on December 10, 1913, on the family farm near Leonard, North Dakota. He grew up there and attended school in Leonard. Hubert then worked with his brothers and sisters on the family farm near Leonard. Hubert E. Discher and Anna C. Anderson were married
in Leonard, North Dakota, on October 15, 1940. They lived in Leonard until coming to Fargo in 1941. Hubert worked for Railway Express in Fargo for 30 years. He then worked for Bristol Distributing in Fargo for a number of years. Hubert and Anna moved to the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City in January of 2002.
Hubert was a longtime member of the Fargo Moravian Church, serving as Treasurer, Elder and Trustee, and Choir Director for many years. He was an avid woodworker and restored many pieces of antique furniture. Hubert’s greatest joy in life was his family. Spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, watching them grow, was such a blessing to him.
Hubert is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Anna, of Valley City; his children, Sharon (Wayne) Kerr of Fargo; Jack (Ruth) Discher of Fargo; Diane (Neil) Heier of Harwood, North Dakota; his grandchildren, Julie (Curt) Grant, and their daughter Amanda; Jodi (Craig) Hanson, and their children, Katie and Cole; Kari (Adam) Burnside and their daughter, Grace; Jay Discher; Beth (Jade) Nelson, and their children, Hanna and Tanner; and Jamie Heier. He is also survived by his brother, Edgar Discher of Embden, North Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.
Hubert was preceded in death by his parents; and 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
FUNERAL: 10 AM Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at Shepherd of the Prairie Church in Fargo (6151 25th Street South)
VISITATION: 5-7 PM Monday at Boulger Funeral Home - and also one hour prior to services in the church on Tuesday
PRAYER SERVICE: 7 PM Monday at Boulger Funeral Home
BURIAL: Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fargo

Gustafson, William

William R. Gustafson, age 60, died February 6, 2004 in Innnovis Hospital, Fargo.
William was born March 7, 1943 to Clarence and Viola Gustafson in Wadena, MN. He graduated from Wadena High School and owned The Caboose Restaurant for several years. He moved to Fergus Falls in 1998 and owned Billy G’s Arcade until he came to live with his daughter, Kim in Moorhead in 2003.
He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly (Jason) Westrum of Moorhead; 4 grandchildren, Donivan, Danielle, Desire, and Jasmine, all of Moorhead; 2 brothers, Jim (Joanne) Gustafson of Wadena, MN and Lindsey (Bonnie) Gustafson of Wadena, MN; and sister, Nancy (Art) VanSickle of Sacramento, CA.
Funeral Service will be Thursday at 2:00 pm in Boulger Funeral Home Chapel with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Leaf River cemetery, Wadena, MN. (Boulger, Fargo)
Rex Oster
Fargo, North Dakota
Rex Oster, age 74, of Fargo, North Dakota, died on Thursday, February 5, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital South University, Palliative Care Unit, in Fargo.
Rex was born on April 7, 1929, in Minot, North Dakota, the son of Frank and Alice (Childs) Oster. He grew up on the family farm in Saline Township, near Granville, North Dakota, where he attended school. After his schooling, Rex worked for area farmers prior to serving his country in the United States Army. Rex was united in marriage to Marjorie Erickson on January 27, 1951. They made their home in Minot where they raised their two daughters, Dianne and Barbara. Rex worked for White’s Creamery, Montana Dakota Utilities, and the YMCA, all in Minot, prior to moving to the Veterans Home in Lisbon. Rex was united in marriage to Faye Buchholz on June 8, 1969, and they made their home in Fargo. Prior to his retirement in 1988, he worked for Crescent Jewelers, and Carousal Jewelers.
Rex was a longtime member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fargo, prior to joining Olivet Lutheran Church. He was active in the Senior Citizen’s Group at the Depot where he enjoyed playing pool, cards, and cribbage. He also spent many hours volunteering at the Veteran’s Hospital in Fargo, was a member of the 55 Singles Club, and the Epilepsy Foundation.
Rex is survived by his daughters, Dianne Kluck of Blaine, Minnesota; and Barb Fallen of Bismarck, North Dakota; his grandchildren, Melissa (Jamey) Tobiason and their children, Courtney and Bailey; Michelle Kluck; Kristin and Jennifer Fallen; his 4 step granddaughters, 2 step grandsons, 2 step great granddaughters, and 2 step great grandsons. He is also survived by his brothers, Don (Joyce) Oster of Mesa, Arizona and Tommy (Marlene) Oster of Bottineau, North Dakota; and his sister, Betty (Joe) Lundberg of Gold Canyon, Arizona; his cousin, Ralph Carty; and many nieces and nephews.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Erma McFarlane and Mildred “Brownie” Haugrose; and his brothers, Melvin, Dave and Henry “Gene” Oster.
FUNERAL: 11 AM Monday, February 9, 2004, at Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo

Anderson, Alice

A celebration of life for Alice M. Anderson, 92, formerly of Kindred, ND, and Riverview Place, Fargo, ND, will be held Saturday, February 14, 2004, at 11 a.m. in West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Kindred. Visitation will be Friday at Riverview Place in Fargo from 6-7:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in West Prairie cemetery, rural Kindred. Alice died Wednesday, February 4, 2004, in a Paynesville, MN, hospital.
Alice Anderson was born January 6, 1912, in Christine, ND, to John and Mina (Erstad) Dahl. Alice was raised on various farms in the Kindred and Leonard, ND areas, where she also attended school. She worked for families before marrying William Anderson on October 6, 1934. They farmed in the Kindred area for over 50 years. She moved to Riverview Place in Fargo in October 1990.She lived there until the summer of 2003 when she moved to Washburne Court in Paynesville, MN.
Alice greatly enjoyed her family and friends. She was a member of West Prairie Lutheran Church, served as a Sunday school teacher, held offices in the church’s Women Group, enjoyed making quilts for missions and her family. She also enjoyed gardening and flowers.
Alice is survived by two daughters, Janice (LeRoy) Franck of Dunnell, MN, and Wanda (Richard) Deegan of Paynesville, MN; eight grandchildren, Nancy (Marv) Hansen of Sherburn, MN, Denise (Kevin) Meister of Houston, TX, Keith (Jody) Franck of Dunnell, MN, Larry Franck of Rochester, MN, Lynn (Kevin) Montgomery of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Kerry (Brenda) Deegan of Willmar, MN, Patrick (Melanie) Deegan of Hackensack, MN, and Angie (Tom) Finley of St. Cloud, MN; 15 great grandchildren; and one step great great grandchild. She is also survived by two brothers, Millard (Betty) Dahl of Leonard, ND, and Ernest (Marlene) Dahl, Moorhead, MN; one sister, Norma Jackson of Fargo; three sister-in-laws, Helen Anderson of Fargo, Marion Davis of Glendale, CA, and Esther Anderson of Silverdale, WA; one brother-in-law, LeRoy Anderson of Burbank, CA; one son-in-law, Roland Hunter of Mendota Heights, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Mina Dahl; her husband, William Anderson; her daughter, Charlene Hunter; an infant son; two brothers; and three sisters.

Nygard, Lydian

Lydian Nygard, 94, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004 in Bethany Homes, Fargo.
Lydian Boyce was born September 16, 1909 in Absaraka, ND, the daughter of Herman and Lydian (Hagemeister) Boyce. She grew up in that area where she attended country school. She graduated from high school in Absaraka. Lydian graduated from Valley State Teachers College and she taught in rural schools for 9 years. She married
Edwin Nygard on October 21, 1939 in Absaraka. After farming in the Kindred, ND area for a short time, the couple purchased a farm in the Leonard area where they farmed until 1979. In 1980, the couple moved to Casselton, and in 1994 they moved to West Fargo. Edwin died November 24, 2000.
Lydian has been a longtime member of West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Kindred, ND. She enjoyed tending her flower gardens and lawn, and she was an excellent cook and baker. She loved spending time with her family and her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Sonia Sandvig, West Fargo, ND and her son, James (DeEtte) Nygard, Denver, CO; two grandsons, Chris and Jay (Kim) Sandvig; two granddaughters, Michele (John) Jenkins and Janel (Jason) Gubeno; three great grandchildren, Gabriel and Hannah Sandvig and Hunter Gubeno; one sister, Marjorie Matejka, Barnesville, MN; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son-in-law, Rolly Sandvig, six sisters and one brother.

Smith, Caroline

Funeral services for Caroline Smith, age 61, Hillsboro, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Hillsboro. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. in Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran cemetery near Nielsville, MN. Caroline died Wednesday, February 4, 2004, in her home at Hillsboro.
Caroline Olsen was born May 20, 1942, in Edmore, ND, the daughter of Carl and Marie (Diseth) Olsen. She grew up near Edmore and attended grade school there. She graduated in 1961 from Fairdale High School. After graduation, she worked in California for a few years before returning to Grand Forks, ND, to attend beauty college. She was united in marriage to Milfred “Fred” Smith on September 10, 1966, in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Hillsboro. The couple made their home in Grandin, ND, for three years, and then moved to Hillsboro where they have since lived. Caroline worked at the American Crystal Sugar Plant in Hillsboro since 1978.
She is survived by her husband, Milfred “Fred”, Hillsboro; son, Paul, Fargo, ND; daughter, Shyla (Kenneth) Hoffart, Gladstone, ND; five grandchildren, Shanna Lewis, Rodney, Marcus, Dominic, and Tabatha Hoffart; eight siblings, Margrit Grenier, Clifford Olsen, Ola Olsen, Erling Olsen, Paul Nygard, Alyce Soper, Leroy Olsen, and Karrol Olsen; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Einer; and her brother-in-law, Roger Soper.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley or the Roger Maris Cancer Center.

Weaver, William J. "Bill"

William J. (Bill) Weaver died on Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at Villa Maria Nursing Home after a long illness.
William J. (Bill) Weaver was born August 27, 1920 in Doyon, ND, to Edgar and Ruth Weaver. At the age of 10 the family moved to Webster, ND, where his father was manager of a grain elevator. Bill graduated from Webster High School in 1938, where he played four years on the basketball team and played trumpet in the school band for three years.
After graduation his first radio sportscasting job was at KDLR in Devils Lake. He later moved to KOVC in Valley City and then on to KFYR in Bismarck. He left KFYR early in 1942 to join the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot. After nine months as an air cadet he was sent to England to fly P 47s with the 8th Air Force. He flew 81 missions over Germany and France and was credited with one German plane shot down, one probable, and one damaged. He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, five United States air medals, and four European Theater Ribbons. In 2001 he was inducted into the National Flying Cross Society.
After the war he returned to KOVC in Valley City for a few months before joining WDAY as a sportscaster. He stayed at WDAY for eight years, and then spent one year in California in the specialty business before returning to WDAY when the station started television. He was the voice of the Bison on radio for a total of 19 years and was president of the Team Makers Club for two years. He was co-host of the TV show AParty Line@ for 11 years. He will be remembered for ending each sportscast with a wink and a smile and “Win or lose, be a good sport.”
After his TV and Radio career he bought the Caraway Company, an advertising specialty distributor, and ran it for 17 years before selling the company to S & S Specialties of Fargo.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Isabelle, his son Kevin(Linda) of Fargo, daughter Jane(Andy) Archer of Golden Valley, MN, grandchildren Lauren and Christian Archer and Billy and Jacquelyn Weaver of Bermuda Dunes, CA, and his sister Mary Bristow of Ashland, WI.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dick; sister, Beth; brother, Lloyd; and his parents
When Bill was in good health he said many times “Life was good, I wouldn’t change a thing.” God loved him, so did we.
