Freed, William

William Clayton Freed, 93, Fargo, died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at MeritCare in Fargo, ND. Bill was formerly of Horace, ND.

William “Bill” Freed was born September 23, 1910 to Oscar and Matilda “Tilly” (Johnson) in a sod house on a homestead in Biggar, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was raised and went to school in Pinewood, MN and later moved to Ulen, MN. As a boy, he learned the trade of blacksmithing from his father and was proud of this accomplishment. In 1936 he married Alice Steichen, also of Ulen, MN. They moved to Horace, ND in 1938 and resided there for the next 64 years. He moved to Bethany Towers in 2002.

He was very active in his community giving much of himself and his time. Bill was a blacksmith and machinist known to farmers for miles around as the man who could “fix anything”. He was proud to have served generations of farmers. He loved flying, hunting, fishing, and baseball. In later years he enjoyed vacationing with his large family to whom he often expressed his love. Bill and Alice raised a family of five children.

Bill is survived by his children: Marjorie Ann Tessier (Donald) Horace, ND, Carol Jean Birdwell (Gale), Lewistown, MT, Wilma Lenae Birdwell (Larry), Lewistown, MT, Victoria Gail Haaland (James), Dickinson, ND, a daughter-in-law Janet Richard (Julien), West Fargo, ND, a brother, Leonard Freed, Fargo, ND and two sisters: Mae Forsythe, MN, Bernice Petterson, AZ; 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Steichen Freed, his son William Alfred Freed, grandson, Bruce Freed, parents, Oscar & Matilda Freed, and siblings: Mabel Coffey, Clarence Freed, Lillian Abraham, Luverne “Frenchy” Freed and special companion, Clara Sands.

Funeral: 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at Horace Lutheran Church, Horace, ND. Burial will follow at the Horace Lutheran cemetery.

Visitation: 4 pm-7 pm on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, ND and one hour prior to the service at Horace Lutheran Church.

Prayer Service: 7 pm on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, ND.

Mullins, Rev. Robert

Rev. Robert J. Mullins, age 90, died March 4, 2004 in the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.

Robert J.Mullins was born December 5, 1913 in Delavan, Wisconsin to Harry J. and Margaret Mullins. He graduated from St. John’s Cathedral High School in Milwaukee in 1931. He attended Marquette University in Milwaukee and Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island and St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee. He was ordained on September 29, 1945 at St. Matthews Church in Milwaukee. Robert was a professor and dean at UND from 1945 to 1984 and also served at St Michael’s Parish in Grand Forks and St. Jude’s Thompson and was Chaplain at St. Michael’s Hospital in Grand Forks and Grand Forks Air Force Base.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George and his nephew John. Robert is survived by his nieces Kathy Gesley, Palo Alto, CA., Betty Mullins, Milwaukee, WI., Mary (Bill Vanpelt) Mullins, Milwaukee, WI., Tricia Freer, Oakley, CA., Eileen Mullins, Milwaukee, WI., and nephews Bill Mullins, Los Angeles, CA., Robert J. Mullins, San Jose, CA., and Joe Mullins, Milwaukee, WI. and 6 grand nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL: 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo, North Dakota

VISITATION: 5:00-8:00 PM Monday at St. Mary’s Cathedral and also one hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday. Prayer service on Monday at 7:00 pm at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

BURIAL: St. Jude’s cemetery, Thompson, ND.

Amy Grangaard
Fargo, North Dakota

Formerly of Kindred, North Dakota

Amy died on Friday, March 5, 2004, at Bethany Homes in Fargo, at the age of 85.

Amy Quinnild was born on May 31, 1918, the daughter of Ole and Anna (Smerud) Quinnild, in Comstock, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm near Walcott, North Dakota, and attended school in this area. She graduated from the Richland Consolidated High School, and then attended Moorhead State Teachers College. After graduation she taught rural school in the Walcott-Colfax-Kindred area, where she met her future husband. Amy was united in marriage to Martell Grangaard on October 20, 1944. They made their home on a farm near Kindred where they farmed for many years. Martell died on May 23, 1993, and Amy continued living on the farm until moving to West Fargo in 1994. She entered Bethany Nursing Home in June of 1998.

Amy is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Charles) Evert of Battle Lake, Minnesota; Beverly (Clyde) Wolf of Esko, Minnesota; and Mary (Gene) Nerby of Riverdale, North Dakota; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and her brother, Clayton Quinnild of Fargo; and several nieces and nephews.

Amy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martell; and 6 brothers and sisters.

FUNERAL: 11 AM Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Norman Lutheran Church near Kindred, North Dakota

VISITATION: 5-8 PM Monday at Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo - and also one hour prior to the funeral in the church on Tuesday

Blakely, Joseph
02/28/2004

Joseph D. Blakely, age 63 of Fargo, died February 28, 2004 in Meritcare Hospital, Fargo.

Joseph D. Blakely was born on August 20, 1940 in Fargo to Harry and Elizabeth Blakely. He grew up in Fargo and graduated from Shanley High School in 1958. Joe worked at Shakey’s Pizza from 1969-1972. He also worked at the Yellow Store and Blakely’s Bottles for a number of years and also for FM news for approximately 10 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack.

He is survived by his sister, Jane (Jack) Knowlton of Boise, Idaho and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday at 4:00 pm at the Fargo High Rise, 101 2nd Street South, Fargo. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Fargo.

Larson, John

John Keith Larson, 45, Fargo, ND died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004 in his home in Fargo under the care of Hospice and surrounded by family.

John was born Sept. 9, 1958 in Moorhead, MN the son of Clifford Jr.& Eleanor (Montplaisir) Larson. He grew up in Hickson, ND and graduated from Kindred High School in 1976. John began working as a welder in Fargo. John married Nancy Tinjum in Fargo on Sept. 1, 1984 They moved to Blaine MN and later Otsego. John was employed as a welder by Barry Blower of Fridley, MN and by Jacobson Manufacturing of New Hope, MN. He returned to Fargo in 2001.

John is survived by two daughters, Shannon and Molly Larson of Otsego, MN., the pride and joy of John’s life and his former wife, Nancy.
his mother, Eleanor Larson, Fargo two brothers, Jerry (Debbie Olmstead) Larson, Coon Rapids, MN, and Jeff (Laurie) Larson, Coon Rapids, MN and a sister Becky Larson, Fargo, ND.

John was preceded in death by his father in1998.

Visitation: Tuesday 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Boulger Funeral Home and one hour before the service on Wednesday.
Funeral Service: Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Boulger Funeral Home.
Burial: Private interment at Holy Cross cemetery, Fargo, ND

Reger, Thomas

Thomas P. Reger, 65, 306 16th Ave. NW West Fargo, ND died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004 at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Thomas Reger was born May 5, 1938 in Page, ND. the son of Patrick and Elaine Reger. He grew up in Fargo and graduated from Shanley High School in 1956. He joined the ND Air National Guard and was a member for a number of years. Thomas joined his family a family business (Reger Electric) as a young man becoming a master electrician at the age of 24. Thomas married JoAnn Hofsommer on Sept. 30, 1961 in Fargo. Thomas and his brother purchased the Reger Electric in 1981. He sold the business in 1985. He owned and operated West City Electric and work as an independent electrical service worker retiring in 1995.

He was a member of the American Legion and one of the founding members of th Swanks Car Club in Fargo.

He is survived by his wife, four children; James (Nancy) Reger, Fargo, ND, Steve (Cheri) Reger, Fargo, ND Elizabeth (Timothy) Olson, Horace, ND and Chris Reger, Fargo, ND a brother, Richard (Judy) Reger, Thief River Falls, MN 11 grandchildren 1 great granddaughter
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Bonnie Reger.

Borman, Darlene
02/25/2004

Darlene P. Borman, age 72, Lakeville, MN, passed away peacefully a little after noon on Ash Wednesday, February 25, 2004 in the grace of God and surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Her battle with colon cancer was brief but courageous.

Darlene lived life to the fullest and always in style. Born on February 8th, 1932, she grew up on the North Dakota prairie, on a farm near Sanborn, daughter of Philip J. and Pauline Sauer. She attended high school at Saint Catherine's in Valley City, and went to college at St. Scholastica, Duluth, MN and finished at North Dakota State University in Fargo, with a degree in home economics. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

She married Paul Nord Borman, of Abercrombie North Dakota on May 8, 1955. After briefly living in Brainerd, MN, Bismarck, ND, and Richfield, MN, Darlene and Paul made their home in Fargo where they raised four children: Mark Paul, Ann Elizabeth, Nicholas Nord, and Jane Marie. After Paul's death in 1989, she moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1993, where she lived for 10 years.

Darlene leaves five beautiful grandsons: Matt and Peter Strom Borman, sons of Mark and Jan (Edina, MN); Paul Nord and John Hanley Borman, sons of Nick and Maureen (Omaha, NE), and Jacob Lee Rudrud, son of Ann Borman and Lee Rudrud (Apple Valley, MN).

Darlene was a beloved sister to Donald (deceased), DuWayne & Phyllis (Sun City West, AZ), Dale & Millie (Sun City West, AZ), and David & Patricia (Scottsdale, AZ). She was a sister-in-law of Mary Jane Borman (Bismarck, ND) and David (deceased).

She was a dear aunt to many nieces and nephews, a cherished and loyal friend, a woman of deep faith. She was also an amazing tennis player, a lover of travel, a wonderful host, a curious and engaging conversationalist, and an indefatigable helper in times of need. She will be missed by all whose lives were touched by her love and friendship.

Memorial services will be held at the Church of the Nativity, Fargo, North Dakota, on Saturday, February 28th at 10:30 a.m. Luncheon to follow. Interment of ashes will take place after lunch at Riverside cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Boulger Funeral Home of Fargo.

A second memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 6th at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Scottsdale, AZ.
