Kohler, Grace

Grace L. Kohler, age 101, Fargo, died Saturday, March 27, 2004, in ManorCare Health Services, Fargo.

Grace L. Schornack was born December 12, 1902, in Perham, MN, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Chizen) Schornack. As a young girl, the family moved to Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada. She lived on a farm there and attended country school. Following the death of her parents when Grace was the age of 13, she was sent to live in a convent in St. Paul, MN. She later married Edward W. Kohler in Grand Forks. They lived in Grand Forks for a few years before moving to Fargo. They have resided in Fargo since that time. Mr. Kohler passed away in 1986. Grace moved to Manor Care in 1995.

She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Smith, Fargo; one grandson, James (Diane) Smith, West Des Moines, IA; and two great grandchildren, Shawn and Karin Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 11 brothers and sisters.

A private family service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Fargo.

Hamner, Tony

Tony Hamner 7, of 4949 16th Ave, . S.W. Fargo, ND died in his home on March 26, 2004.

Anthony “Tony” Hamner was born on Oct. 2, 1996 in Fargo, ND. He has lived in Fargo since he was born and was currently in the first grade at Eastwood Elementary School in West Fargo. Tony came into this world smiling and left that way. His motto was always to “ live life to the fullest”. He always looked forward to the Fair coming to town and enjoyed the most exciting rides at the Fair. Tony was loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed by those who were a part of his life.

Gangnes, Grace

Grace Gangnes, 92, Fargo, North Dakota, formerly of Argusville, North Dakota died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. The funeral will be held Monday, March 29, 2004 at 10:30 am at First Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Grace Dahlen was born June 17, 1911 in Kindred, North Dakota to Oscar and Minnie (Blilie) Dahlen. She graduated from Kindred High School and Valley City Teacher’s College, Valley City, North Dakota. She taught at schools in rural Richland and Cass counties of North Dakota. On August 18, 1940 she married Gilbert Gangnes at Norman Lutheran Church, rural Kindred. They farmed near Prosper, North Dakota. In 1981 they moved to Fargo.

Music was an important part of Grace’s life. She taught piano lessons, accompanied soloists, and organized many musical groups. She was a member of the Herby Lutheran Church, rural Argusville; she served as LCW President and was church organist for over fifty years. Grace was a member of the Prosper Homemakers and board member of the National Association for Family and Community Education. She organized and directed 4-H variety shows for the Prosper Livestock and Prosper Pixies. Grace served on the Board of the International Peace Garden and was a lifetime member. For forty years she served on the Red River Valley Fair Board, was a member of the Bonanza Belles, and served as coordinator for
St. John’s Church activities during Pioneer Days at Bonanzaville. Grace served as director of the Farm Bureau Women’s Chorus. She sang with the Fargo Moorhead Area Music Club and has served as past president. Grace was the organist for the New Horizons Manor, Fargo. She became an associate member of the First Lutheran Church in Fargo on November 20, 2002.

Grace is survived by her three sisters, Irene Haugen, Decorah, IA, Fran Dahlen, and Ardyce Grant, both of Fargo; sister-in-law, Katherine Dahlen, Kindred, and many nieces and nephews.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, George Dahlen and William Dahlen; and two sisters, Margie Merhiy and Doris Grindeland.

Visitation: Sunday from 2 to 7 pm, with a prayer service at 7 pm, in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.
Funeral: Monday at 10:30 am in First Lutheran Church, Fargo.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Adair, Doris

Doris died on Monday, March 22, 2004, at the Hillsboro Medical Center Hospital at the age of 84.

Doris was born in Canada on February 10, 1920. She was raised in Brainerd, MN, where she married Rollin Adair. They made their home in Walcott, ND, and raised their family there. She has also lived in Nielsville, MN, and Fertile, MN. Doris has been living in Harwood, ND, for the last several years with her daughter Diane.

Doris is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Eskild) Jensen, Hillsboro, Elaine Erickson, West Fargo, and Diane (Virgil) Sistad, Harwood; three sons, Cecil Adair, Harwood, Timothy Adair (Susie), Martin, SD, and Mark Adair, Plentywood, MT; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rollin Adair; son, Thomas Adair; and daughter, Joan Stallings.

The funeral for Doris will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Walcott Lutheran Church, Walcott. Visitation and a prayer service will be held on Thursday from 7-8 p.m. in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. Visitation will also be held in the church one hour prior to services on Friday. Burial will be in Walcott cemetery.

Lynn, Stella

Stella M. Lynn, 94, of Fargo, formerly of New Rockford, ND died March 20, 2004 in Elim Care Center, Fargo.

Stella Mae Brodshaug was born May 22, 1909 in Binford, ND to Ole and Catherine Brodshaug. She married Harry Lynn on October 2, 1928 in Cooperstown, ND.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna (Frank) Bachmeier of Fargo; 5 grandchildren, Tom, Mike (Laura), Jeff (Eileen), Jon (Teresa) and Denise; 5 great-grandchildren, Tina, Tiffany, Levi, Cole and Chase; 2 sisters, Doris Aldrich of Corpus Christi, TX and Kathryn Leir of Spokane, WA.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, March 24 at 2:00 pm at Elim Care Center Chapel, 3534 University Drive S., Fargo. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the chapel. Burial will be in Bethlehem cemetery, McHenry, ND. (Boulger, Fargo)

Schwinden, Donna

Donna Ellen (Wallum) Schwinden, of 52 16 ½ Avenue North, Fargo, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, in Bethany Homes, Fargo.

Born on November 12, 1926, Donna was the youngest daughter of Kathryn (Collins) and Manly Wallum. Donna graduated from Fargo Central in 1944. While working as a clerk at Kresge’s, Donna met her future husband, Bud (Albert) Schwinden, who was also employed by Kresge’s. While working there, Donna would slip Bud “free” handfuls of popcorn. A loving courtship ensued. Bud and Donna were married at St. Mary’s Cathedral on May 31, 1948.

Together Donna and Bud raised three children, five gold retrievers, one shitusa, two rabbits, two ducks, and two parakeets. Growing up in the Schwinden’s household was never boring.

Donna enjoyed shopping, oil painting, and writing poetry and short stories for children. However, Donna’s greatest joy was spending time with Bud and her children. We will miss your unconditional support, humor, and unselfish ways. We could always count on you. May God’s angels tenderly carry you home. You are and will always be in our hearts until the twelveth of never.

Donna is survived by Bud, Fargo; and their three children and spouses, Mary Kay Schwinden-Schmidt and Ed Schmidt, Fergus Falls, MN, Cindy Schwinden and Mike Weiss, Moscow, ID, and John and Kim Schwinden and their three daughters, Brianna, Katie, and Abby, Lakeville, MN; and one sister, Colleen Hare, Fargo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to F-M Hospice, F-M Humane Society, or the Fargo Children’s Library.

A funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Holy Spirit Church, Fargo. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. in the church. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Fargo.

Olstad, Theodore

On Sunday, March 21, 2004, Theodore (Ted) Olstad died peacefully at the MeritCare Hospital Palliative Care Unit in Fargo. God has opened His loving arms and called him home.

Theodore (Ted) Dennison Olstad was born December 15, 1938, one of Dr. Hills babies, in Cedar Township, Adams County, North Dakota, to Myrtle (Reyerson) and Eddie Olstad. Ted’s middle name is the maiden name of his paternal grandmother.

Ted’s elementary education was in a one room, rural Adams County school. He graduated from Hettinger High School, attended Concordia College, Moorhead, BJC in Bismarck, and graduated in 1962 from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, with a degree in accounting.

Ted was united in marriage to Mary Helen Wald in Bismarck on August 12, 1961. Four sons were born of this marriage. Mary Helen died of cancer on August 31, 1997. They had been married for 36 years. Ted was also preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Myrtle Olstad, and his nephew, Doug Olstad.

He married Janet (Jan) Deilke on April 9, 1999, at Holy Spirit Church, Fargo. They were married for five years.

Ted was employed as an Internal Revenue Agent for 32 years, stationed in Dickinson, Bismarck, and Fargo, retiring in 1994. He served in the United States Army Reserve from 1962 to 1968. After retirement, he worked part time at NDSU and Marshall Fields in Fargo. He was a member of Holy Spirit Church in Fargo, the American Legion and the Eagles.

Ted is survived by his wife, Jan; his four sons, John (Barb), Spokane, WA, Daniel (Linda), Savage, MN, Thomas (Heather), Burnsville, MN, and Terrence, New Hope, MN; and his three grandchildren, Eric, Jacob, and Sydney Olstad. He is also survived by his brother Maurice (Ann) Olstad, Monticello, MN.

Additional survivors include his stepchildren, Susan (Richard) Thoreson, Fargo, Ann (John) Fee, Wheeling, IL, Lisa (Jeffrey) Cook, Barnesville, MN, and Karl “Skip” Deilke, Fargo; and his stepgrandchildren, Ryan, David, Michael and Kelly Thoreson, Morganne, Tanner and MacKenzie Cook and Alex Fee.

Ted loved to golf. He was treasurer of the Monday night Federal League for many years. He also played on the Red River Valley Senior Golf Tour. He and Jan took their golf clubs with them whenever they traveled. He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and playing bridge. Ted was very patriotic and a faithful viewer of the History channel on TV. He always said, “Somebody has to remember the sacrifices that were made by our soldiers”. Ted’s father, Eddie Olstad, served in the U.S. Army during World War I and was stationed in Europe. Ted enjoyed cooking and was known for his “Sour Cream Rhubarb Pie”.

Most of all, Ted loved his family and the farm in Adams County. He always referred to his birthplace as “God’s Country”. He enjoyed the annual pheasant hunting outing on the farm with his four boys and the scenic beauty of the West River countryside.

Visitation will be from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Boulger Funeral Home, with a prayer service to follow. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Holy Spirit Church, Fargo. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hettinger cemetery, Hettinger, ND.

Memorials are preferred to the University of North Dakota Alumni Association or MeritCare Palliative Care Unit.
