Helen V. Perry-Olson

Helen Virginia Perry, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Oliver) Perry, was born July 9, 1906, in Fargo, ND, where she grew up and received her education. She graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1923.

On August 28, 1926, Helen married Leonard T. Olson, in Fargo. They made their home in Fargo, and Helen attended North Dakota State University for more than three years. Helen worked for the Federal Government in a number of offices in Fargo. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service in 1968, as a file supervisor.

In retirement, Helen continued to live in Fargo. She was an active volunteer and on the board of directors of Southeast Mental Health, Fargo, active in the Business and Professional Women’s Association, and very active in church activities at Calvary Baptist Church in Fargo.

Helen died on Thursday, April 21, 2005, at her daughter’s home in Moorhead, MN, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, who died in 1985; her parents; and two sisters, Corrine Shaw and Florence Clark.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Gene (Jack) Frenette, Moorhead; a son, Bruce (Betty) Olson, Troutdale, OR; four grandchildren, Michele Frenette, Moorhead, Michael Frenette, Bismarck, ND, Perry (Deanna) Olson, Forest Grove, OR, and Bethanne (Rick) Coleman, Portland, OR; and by six great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Monday, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Prayer service: Monday, at 7:00 PM in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral service: Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at 10:30 AM in Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Fargo, ND.

Burial: Riverside cemetery, Fargo.

Helen F. Oliphant

Helen Frances Oliphant was born December 15, 1913, near Elliott, ND, to Arthur and Mattie (Silvey) Oliphant. Helen was raised in that area where she attended school.

Helen attended Valley City (ND) State Teacher’s College and graduated from Moorhead (MN) State College. Helen taught from 1937 to 1979. Fifteen of those years were in North Dakota schools and twenty-seven years were for Moorhead Public Schools.

After Helen retired, she continued to make her home in Moorhead until she entered Bethany Homes, Fargo, ND, where she died Thursday, September 8, 2005, at ninety-one years of age.

Helen is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Helen will be Sunday, September 11, 2005, at 1:30 PM, in Mavis Whiting Chapel, Bethany Homes. Inurnment will be in Oakwood cemetery, Lisbon, ND.

Thomas H. Novak

Thomas H. Novak died on Friday, December 16, 2005, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, at the age of 54.

The son of Sylvester “Bud” and Janet (Brodina) Novak, he was born in Fargo, ND, on June 12, 1951. Tom grew up and received his education in Fargo, where he graduated from Shanley High School in 1969 and NDSU in 1974. He served in the US Army Reserve for six years.

On Sept. 21, 1974, Tom was united in marriage to Nancy Promersberger in Fargo, where they made their home.

For 10 years, Tom was a partner in H & H Associates, a general construction company. In 1979, Tom and Nancy acquired FM Bench Ad Company, which they ran for twenty years. In addition, they acquired Orange Julius in 1983, which they continue to own and operate.

Tom was an avid sailor, private pilot and experienced downhill skier. However, his two true passions in life were his deep personal faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and his unwavering commitment to his wife and family.

In 1983, Tom was diagnosed with MS, a disease that took away many of his physical abilities. Despite the debilitating affects of MS, Tom continued to stay active in his church. He served as church chairman, a deacon and as chair of the building committee.

Tom is survived by his wife, Nancy, Fargo; a daughter, Heather Lea (Tim) Rahn, and grandson, Cody, of Alexandria, MN; a son, Seth (Heather Kay) Novak, Fargo; his mother, Janet Novak, Fargo; and a brother, Ken (Carolyn) Novak, Bismarck, ND. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Joseph. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Visitation: Sunday, 7 PM until 9 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN, and one hour prior to funeral, at the church.

Funeral service: Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at 2:00 PM, Bethel Evangelical Free Church Fargo, North Dakota.

Burial: Riverside cemetery, Fargo.

Robert J. Nelson

Robert Jerome Nelson died Sunday, January 23, 2005, at seventy-seven years of age. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, at MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND.

Robert was born January 30, 1927, to Carl and Katherine (Schibsted) Nelson, in Perley, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in Kirkebo Lutheran Church, Perley. Robert attended elementary school in Perley and graduated from high school in Hendrum, MN.

Robert entered the US Army on July 20, 1945, and served until January 16, 1947. Following his discharge, Robert returned to the Perley area and married Evelyn Volness on June 26, 1948, in Perley. They lived and farmed in the Perley area. Robert was also a self-employed contractor and carpenter for many years.

Robert was a man of few words but had a quick wit about him. He was a quiet man who took immense pride in his carpentry work and skills. All of Robert’s family have benefited from his talents because his family and work were his life. If you ever wondered where to find Robert, you just had to look in his shop where he could be found puttering around. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.

Robert is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Evelyn; four sons: David Nelson of Fargo, and his two children, Adam (Stephanie) Nelson and their daughter, Brynn, and Tony Nelson; son, Jim (Glenda) Nelson of West Fargo, ND, and their three children, Jason (Shawn) Nelson and their son, Tavian, and Andrea and Amanda Nelson; son, Jeff (Lee Ann) Nelson of Perley, and their two children, Matt (Angie) Nelson and Mike Nelson; and son, Darin (Stacy) Nelson of Perley, and their three children, Logan, Lexi, and Lauren Nelson; two brothers, Edwin (Ellen) Nelson and George (Betty) Nelson, both of Perley; and one sister, Frances Aabye, of Moorhead, MN.

His parents and one granddaughter, Allison Kay Nelson, preceded Robert in death.

Visitation for Robert will be Wednesday, January 26, 2005, from 5 – 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. His funeral will be Thursday, January 27, 2005, at 2 PM, in Kirkebo Lutheran Church, Perley. Burial will follow in Kirkebo Lutheran cemetery.

Georgine Lynnes Hanson

Georgine Constance Soma was born June 27, 1934, to Torger and Inga (Njaa) Soma in Cooperstown, ND, where she grew up and graduated from high school. She went on to attend Wahpeton (ND) State School of Science for one year.

On June 4, 1955, Georgine married Earl Lynnes in Cooperstown and they made their home in Walcott, ND, where they farmed until they moved to Fargo. Georgine worked for many years as a nurses aid for St. Luke’s Hospital, and received an excellence award for her hard work in October of 1997. In December of 1989, Earl died and Georgine continued to make her home in Fargo.

On December 15, 1990, Georgine married Burnett Hanson in Fargo, where they made their home. They enjoyed socializing and traveling in their motor home. Burnett died in December of 1997.

Georgine died on Sunday, February 27, 2005, in MeritCare Medical Center, at the age of seventy.

Georgine loved the outdoors and went camping often. She always remembered special events and would send a card for every occasion. She was a very compassionate, loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities.

Georgine is survived by two sons, Michael (Rose) Lynnes, Fargo, and David (Carrie) Lynnes, West Fargo, ND; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her step-father, Art Simonson, Cooperstown; two brothers, Jergen (Beverly) Soma, Cooperstown, and David (Lisa) Soma, Mandan, ND; three sisters, Kaaren Soma, North Carolina, Peggy Soma, St. Paul, MN, and Karla (Larry) Rislov, Badger, MN.

Visitation: Wednesday from 12 – 2 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN

Funeral Service: Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at 2 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead

Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo

Reynard Lyngby

Reynard Lyngby was born August 2, 1918 in Hannaford, ND, where he grew up and received his education. In 1939, he moved to Moorhead, MN, where he was united in marriage to Marlyn Fogderud on Feb. 21, 1942.

Rey served his country in the US Army Air Force. He was stationed in Great Britian during WW II. After his discharge, he returned to Moorhead. Rey worked for Corwin-Churchill Auto dealership, and at a local Texaco oil station. In 1955, he started Rey’s Standard Service station in downtown Moorhead. He later built a new station at highway 75 and I-94. He sold the service station in 1975. From 1975 until 1978, Rey owned and operated the KOA campground in Moorhead. He sold the campground and retired in 1978. Rey was a life member of the Moorhead V.F.W., and a member of the Fargo (ND) Eagles. Rey also was a “Circle 8” square dance caller for many years.

Rey and Marlyn made their home in Fargo for a number of years. They also wintered in Mesa, AZ, for many years, and since 1988, lived solely in Arizona.

Rey died in Mesa on July 17, 2005, at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mathias and Karen Lyngby; a brother, Ingvald; and a sister, Emelia Jahr.

Rey is survived by his wife, Marlyn, Mesa, AZ; five children, Jarilyn (Larry) Johnson, Horicon, WI, Larry Lyngby, Glennallen, AK, Steven Lyngby, Pelican Rapids, MN, Nancy Lyngby, Marana, AZ, and Brian (Mary) Lyngby, Mesa; brother, Carl (Bessie) Lyngby, Grand Forks, ND; sister, Myrtle Corneliussen, Grand Forks; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials preferred to the American Diabetes Association.

Memorial service: Friday, August 26, 2005, at 2 PM in the Christian Life Center of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead.

Burial: Moorhead Memorial Gardens.

Lorraine Lund

Lorraine Lund was born in Enderlin, ND, on August 29, 1928, to Arthur and Minnie (Goss) Christianson. She attended school in Enderlin and graduated in the Enderlin High School class of 1946. As she grew up in Enderlin, Lorraine considered her father fortunate to be employed by the railroad, which enabled her to learn to play piano.

On June 22, 1947, Lorraine was married to John O. Lund in Enderlin. They lived in Valley City, ND, and moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1956. She played piano and taught piano lessons for over 40 years, which extended into last year and had provided her years of joy. As her family grew up she had also been a Campfire Girl leader.

In recent years, she loved spending time with family and friends at their lake cabin on Lake Lida. One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards and games. Most importantly, she was a devoted mother and grandmother. As a fifty year member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Moorhead, she served in the Altar Guild, cared for communion records for years, and taught Sunday School. As a volunteer, she served United Blood Services for many years.

Mr. Lund died in 1990 and from that time, she has been an active part of the Tuesday morning coffee group. This special group of ladies provided Lorraine much support even into her 5 month encounter with cancer. For the last month, Lorraine had been receiving care at Manor Care in Fargo, ND. She died there on Monday afternoon, October 24th at the age of 77 years.

Her family includes two daughters and one son, John (JeLain) Lund of Orlando, FL; Judy Lund of Fargo; and Jerie (Keith) Little of Fargo. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Joshua Lund of Austin, TX; Andrew Lund of Austin, TX; Courtney (Quinby) Chunn of West Hollywood, CA; Kenny Wold of Fargo; and Stephanie Little of Fargo. She was preceded in death by her husband John and a brother, Art (Bud) Christianson.

VISITATION: Friday, October 28, 2005 5 – 9 pm, Remembrance sharing, Friday at 8 pm, Korsmo Funeral Service, Moorhead, MN

FUNERAL SERVICE: Saturday, October 29, 2005 at 10 am, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN

INTERMENT: Moorhead Memorial Gardens, Moorhead, MN

Gerhard "Gay" Lovas

Gerhard Lovas, known as Gay, age 82, Fargo, ND, died Friday, April 29, 2005, in MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Gerhard Lovas was born October 16, 1922, in Hillsboro, ND. He graduated from Hillsboro High School and then attended Reisch School of Auctioneering.

Moving to Mayville, ND he began a career in the cattle business working as an auctioneer and cattle buyer for Harrington Brothers’ Livestock. He remained an independent cattle buyer until the time of his death.

On June 30, 1951, Gerhard married Lois E. Harrington in Mayville, ND, where they made their home. They moved to Fargo in 1989.

Gerhard is survived by his wife, Lois, Fargo; two sons, Dan (Cindy), Grand Forks, ND, and Steve (Cheri), Cheyenne, WY; two daughters, Cathy (Keith) Peltier, Harvey, ND, and Amy (Scott) Anderson, Moorhead, MN; ten grandchildren; and two sisters, Alyce Putz, Salem, OR, and Ruth (Paul) Bennett, St. Johns, MI.

Visitation: Sunday, 5 PM to 7 PM, Ponntoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Prayer Service: Sunday at 7 PM, Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Funeral: Monday, May 2, 2005; 10:30 AM, Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Burial: Monday at 2:30 PM, Oak Grove cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN
